There are so many very talented people out there, and everyone has a different opinion on who the absolute best voice in the world is. Some say it's Celine Dion, some say it was Pavorati, some say Josh Groban, Whitney Houston, Barbra Streisand, and some say Reba Mcentire. But there has to be only one Best singer in the entire world. So who would it be for you?

My vote goes to Carrie Underwood. If you ever heard her sing, "How Great Thou Art" live at the Grand Ole Opry, you will just get such chills. She has such amazing, incredible range. Such God given talent there.

Eh. I'm not all that impressed by Underwood...or any of the so called "American Idols" for that matter.

I can't really name a #1, but I love love love Sarah McLachlan's voice.

Not sure how to take this question. Seems like it would be better to say "Who is your favorite singer?"

I sing classical music and most of the singers that I admire typically have many years of vocal/theory training as well as studying under great masters. It's really kind of hard to compare them with mainstream vocalists.

One of my favorite vocalists is Kathleen Ferrier.

Also Sade has an incredibly smooth, seamless, soulful voice.

Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance has a voice that makes me shiver sometimes. He can put so much meaning and soul into the words that simply don't translate when they're just written out plain.

Alessandro Juliani sings an -amazing- song (Gaeta's Lament) on the last BSG soundtrack that I want to turn up to 11 on headphones and play on constant loop till I go deaf. It's one of the most heartbreakingly beautiful songs I've ever heard.

I don't know if either are -the best- singers, but they've got voices that inspire such deep emotion...

There really is no way to determine the best singer, but the one with the voice that most pleases me is Gavin Degraw. His renditions of A Change is Gonna Come (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOl85O8nGXs) and A Song For You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMPY3bwZqeY) are so soulful and chilling, not to mention that I love his original work. That being said, Ray LaMontagne and Damien Rice are a close second and third.

Hayley Williams of Paramore.
Although I don't really like that band, she's pretty talented.

Amy Lee of Evanescence. She's amazing.

There isn't any one BEST singer for me, but Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Michael and Janet Jackson do a pretty good job.

Also, I hate her lyrics and attitude, but Christina Aguilera has a really flexible voice. It's all high and stuff.

Patsy Cline.. her voice is so haunting, pure, just absolutely beautiful.. everybody knows Crazy but just listen to her singing Sweet Dreams.. I've got pretty eclectic musically tastes but she really was a beautiful artist...

more contemporary Amy Lee singing My Immortal or Hello... Natasha Beddingfields singing Soulmate.

Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman singing together, Time to Say Goodbye.. brings me almost to tears.

hehe I like me some sad songs

Les Choristes - that movie brought me to tears and I own the soundtrack. Vois sur ton Chemin and la nuit are my favourites.

I agree on Time to say goodbye, I love that song. Ghost love score by Nightwish (Tarja era) is also great.

This rendition of "Ave Maria" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bosouX_d8Y

I also have the Gregorian Chant Dies Irae in my ipod that is a-mazing. Franz Schubert : Der Erlkönig ...okay I don't have a fav, it depends on the song and the singer.

I mostly enjoy classical music. Its hard to find the original singers for a lot of pieces as they're so old. I love the song 'Ave Maria' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQVz6vuNq7s, In my opinion it's the most beautiful song every sang :)

dead: Billy Holiday + John Lennon
alive: Utada Hikaru + Steve Perry

Why,

Billy is simply a legend, and John is a legend that died too soon.

Utada can probably sing herself out of jail, and Steve is just the best lead singer of all time!

You know, I don't believe in topics like this. Music is such a subjective thing. Like Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford may be wonderful with the Broadway stuff. But could they handle hard rock vocals in their natural element? Hayley Williams may rock out when she's with Paramore. But would she have the vocal discipline to do what Brightman does?

One of my favorite names from the past that hasn't gotten mentioned so far is Joanie Sommers. And while Joanie did transition from bubblegum to jazz standards and did well, I wouldn't dream of porting her into 2009 and make her replace Hayley Williams in Paramore. I can't envision her voice standing up to the vocal demands Williams places on hers.

This is not baseball. You can't say Norah Jones is a better singer than Chrissie Hynde and have hard, fast, statisical data to back you up like you can saying that Babe Ruth was a better power hitter than Jim Rice. Music is too subjective and performs too many different functions. Who is the BEST singer in the world? NOBODY. The question is unanswerable.

I agree wholeheartedly. I could hear Pavarotti sing and it does nothing to me, no matter how technically perfect his voice could be. And then I hear John Denver's Annie's Song and I cry. It's all just a matter of personal taste and what we look for in the music.

My favorite male singer is Ville Valo and my favorite female singer is Emilie Autumn. They both write their own music and lyrics, they are not afraid to try different styles and their songs make me feel, it's not just a pretty piece of music that leaves you the moment it stops. It makes me happy, it helps me when I need it... I can listen to them for hours, none can touch my heart the way they do, but still I would never tell Ville or Emilie are the best singers in the world, because I know they're not perfect... But I love them anyway ;)

The Best singer for me might be not best for others. I would like to say George Jones is best for me as i like old music. I am a big fan of his voice quality. His songs make me crazy about music. He had given all different kind of songs.

Pat Benatar has an awesome rock voice. It's powerful and precise. I also like Sarah McLaughlin, whom I think has been mentioned. Liza Minelli has a great voice too, I love her singing in Cabaret.

I have a hard time choosing on male singers because there are so many to choose from. I guess my answer right now would be Harry Nilsson. I love Without You, 1941, Me and My Arrow...the list goes on. :)

Pat Benatar has an awesome rock voice. It's powerful and precise.

I would second this. Except that when she sings opera, she is, in my opinion, WAY better. It's a pity she decided not to pursue her classical career, in my opinion, but I guess you have to follow your muse. :)

Then again, I don't think there is a single best singer in the world. It would depend on the genre of music. You cannot really compare people singing classical and people singing rock. It just doesn't compute.

This might sound a little odd, but I'd have to say Corey Taylor from Slipknot and Stone Sour. I'm not sexist or anything but I'm not too crazy about female voices.

I do like Chris Cornell's (Soundgarden) vocals; he has an insane range and a powerful voice. Maynard James Keenan (Tool) is also very exotic with his vocals. Anthony Keidis (Red Hot Chili Peppers) sounds pure badass. My favourite screamer though has to be Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God.

I agree that this type of thing is completely subjective. Different voices appeal to different people etc. The best singers in the world are probably living in obscurity in a tiny village in Africa or South America, singing for no one other than their families and friends, unfortunately.

As for "famous" singers I'd have to go with Patsy Cline and Joan Baez. Both have such strong clear voices. Other personal favourites include Billie Holiday, Amy Lee and Enya.

Whenever I hear Pink, I'm remembered of the Song Lady Marmelade. Sometime towards the end Aguilera and her sing one after another which is so disadvantageous for Pink. You can think about Aguilera what you want and I'm not exactly a fan of today's music, but her voice is outstanding.
I'm a little surprised by the answers in this thread. Seems like the youth doesn't even know music anymore. There's nothing really wrong with all the Underwoods and what were their names again, but it would be sad if your knowledge of music was so limited.

I liked Barbra Streisand's voice when she was younger. Now her voice is too raspy from all those years of belting it out. You can really see her age in her voice now. But Barbra was at her peak in the 1970's and 1980's her voice was perfect. You know she had wanted to get plastic surgrery for her huge nose, but never did because she was afraid it would take away from her singing style. And I'm glad she never got the surgery. She used to sing like an angel, before she went into the older raspy stage. Nothing wrong with raspy voices, I love Janis Joplin, and all those male rock singers with raspy voices, and Tina Turner, but I don't think it goes well with Babs.

Mariah Carey is probably just the best singer out of the really well-known singers. Doesn't make her the best there is. Especially when she annoys me so much.

EDIT: Hey, what about Alicia Keys?

I'mSimalicious!
17th Dec 2009, 02:26 PM
@PixCli Lisa has nothing on Mariah. Mariah in the 90's would have blown her out of the water. I'm a music student, and both myself and my music teacher agrees.

@supaclova Mariah is one of the best point blank. And I looked up everyone in this thread and she's the best out of all of them. None of them could sing "My All" or "O Holy Night" like she can.

And she's not annoying at all. I love her personality. She has a great sense of humor, which may turn people off, since they expect her to be boring, quiet, and respectful. But she really is a person with a great personality, not a boring puppet.

Alicia Keys was pretty good when she started, but she has really damaged her voice over the years.

I also love Beyonce. Her voice is amazing too. Not as amazing as Mariah, but she's still rated pretty high.

lethifold

I personally, like supaclova, find Mariah Carey annoying. There's something about her voice which disagrees with me. I mean, yes, she has a strong voice, but it isn't beautiful, which is something that I think makes a singer good. Lisa Hannigan's voice is absolutely enchanting, haunting in some ways.

Beyonce isn't a good artist in my opinion either. Yes, she has a strong voice, like Carey, but her music is ridiculously generic. Someone says "Write a love song", and one seems to pop out five minutes later. Her lyrics aren't exactly inspiring either. They're nowhere near as brilliant and creative as other artist's, yet she's gotten all of this fame. Sure, "Single Ladies" is catchy, but a good song? Hell no.

Yeah, why don't you go listen to Broken Hearted Girl, Resentment, or Dangerously in Love by Beyonce? You obviously judge her by her singles, which isn't right. Nothing generic. If anything, Beyonce set the standard. Most music critics will agree that Beyonce is one of the best.

And I 100% disagree with you on Mariah Carey. Did you even listen to My All? Her voice is so sweet. It's so captivating. Lisa is just boring.

And about Chrirstina Aguilera, she has a great voice, but she's a horrible vocalist. She doesn't know how to control her voice well. It gets all over place.

And Mariah in the 90's blew away everything Christina has done. Who do you think Christina's inspiration is?

I don't judge her by her singles. I judge her on my opinion, and that is she is popular for music which I don't think is good enough. I've heard plenty of her less-famous music as well. So what? I don't think she's a good artist. Her lyrics are boring. To me, being a great singer means having beautiful lyrics as well.

And um, Carey can hit the big notes, so that makes her captivating? Hannigan's voice is utterly enchanting in my mind, and haunting. Her music, especially when combined with the extraordinary vocal talents of Damien Rice, sends shivers down my spine, no matter how many times I've heard the song. She's most definitely not boring. Compared to most other artists, her talent is incredbily unique.

Merlin's pants, you seem blinded by your own apparent love for current, popular music to call Hannigan's voice a "generic indie music voice". Please tell me if you don't like current popular music, that's just how it appears to me. If that's how you describe her voice, then Beyonce has generic lyrics, a boring voice which can hit the big notes, and she's just boring and annoying in general. Oh, and I've heard plenty of their music to judge them on without having to listen to the songs you link. I have better things to do with my time than listen to music I don't enjoy. They include listening to music I do enjoy, like Lisa Hannigan and Damien Rice!

By the way, from re-reading some of the older posts, the music critics who label Beyonce as one of the best would be, I'm assuming, judging her against other current and popular artists. I will admit she's better than the majority of current popular artists, but compared to some of the more underground, 'indie' music, she pales. Put her next to Julia Stone (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=twnqSCKAsqE), Regina Spektor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMEpaVL_WsU), Lisa Mitchell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NE1fbCvCHI), Ladyhawke (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QN8HwUxFouM), and her music is boring.

Oh and by the way, plenty of artists write their own music...that doesn't mean it's any good.

Okay...

A) Yes, I like popular music. There is nothing wrong with that. And yes, Hannigan's voice is boring. Nothing interesting at all. A bore.

B) You don't have any ground to judge if you haven't listen to those songs. Great voices. Great lyrics.

C) Yeah, but Mariah's good. I'll let you know that it was Mariah who intruduced the use of larger vocabulary in pop music. Words like this is pop music was virtually unheard of:Treated me kind
Sweet destiny
Carried me through desperation
To the one that was waiting for me
It took so long
Still I believed
Somehow the one that I needed
Would find me eventually

Prayed through the nights
Felt so alone
Suffered from alienation
Carried the weight on my own

Had to be strong
So I believed
And now I know I've succeeded
In finding the place I conceived

I've realized a dream
And I visualized
The love that came to be
Feel so alive
I'm so thankful that I received
The answer that heaven has sent down to me

You treated me kind (yeah)
Sweet destiny (I'm so glad that you did)
And I'll be eternally grateful
Holding you so close to me
Prayed through the nights
So faithfully
Knowing the one that I needed
Would find me eventually (would find me)Or evenBoy your love's so good
I don't wanna let go
And although I should
I can't leave you alone
Cause you're so disarming
I'm caught up in the midst of you
And I cannot resist at all
Boy if I do
The things you wanna to
The way I used to do
Could you love me baby
You leave me feelin used
Cause you go and break my heart

Heartbreaker you've got the best of me
But I just keep on comin' back incessantly
Oh why did you have to run your game on me
I should have known right from the start
You'd go and break my heart
(Gimme your love, gimme your love)
(Gimme your love, gimme your love)

It's a shame to be
So euphoric and weak
When you smile at me
And you tell me things
That you know persuade me
To relinquish my love to you
But I cannot resist
At allI am thinking of you
In my sleepless solitude tonight
If it's wrong to love you
Then my heart just won't let me be right
'Cause I've drowned in you
And I won't pull through
Without you by my side

Baby can you feel me
Imagining I'm looking in your eyes
I can see you clearly
Vividly emblazoned in my mind
And yet you're so far
Like a distant star
I'm wishing on tonight
Now, please, please, please listen to the songs I posted before you reply. Sweet music. Sweet lyrics. Sweet voices.

A) Yes, I like popular music. There is nothing wrong with that. And yes, Hannigan's voice is boring. Nothing interesting at all. A bore.I disagree with that statement (the latter part of it at least, I don't mind some popular music), but I'm obviously not going to bring you around any further, I'll stop trying to.

B) You don't have any ground to judge if you haven't listen to those songs. Great voices. Great lyrics. I do have ground to judge. Just because I didn't listen to all 9 of those songs doesn't mean I'm ill-informed. I've hear 5/9 of them, and I would prefer to listen to Bright Eyes instead.

C) Yeah, but Mariah's good. I'll let you know that it was Mariah who intruduced the use of larger vocabulary in pop musicWoot! for her introducing a wider range of vocabulary in music. Yes, it is an achievement, but other artists have taken that and morphed it to create better lyrics in my opinion. Check out "Poison Oak", by Bright Eyes:
Poison oak, some boyhood bravery
When the telephone was a tin can on a string
And I fell asleep with you still talking to me
You said you weren't afraid to die
In polaroids you were dressed in women's clothes
Were you made ashamed, why'd you lock them in a drawer?
Well, I don't think that I ever loved you more

Than when you turned away, when you slammed the door
When you stole the car and drove towards Mexico
And you wrote bad checks just to fill your arm
I was young enough, I still believed in war

Well let the poets cry themselves to sleep
And all their tearful words will turn back into steam

But me, I'm a single cell on the serpent's tongue
There's a muddy field where a garden was
And I'm glad you got away but I'm still stuck out here
My clothes are soaking wet from your brother's tears

And I never thought this life was possible
You're the yellow bird that I've been waiting for

The end of paralysis, I was a statuette
Now I'm drunk as hell on a piano bench
And when I press the keys it all gets reversed
The sound of loneliness makes me happier Far more poetic in my mind.

Okay, but you said that Mariah's voice didn't sound good. If you listened to My All, you'd know that she has one of the most sweet voices.

You said that she didn't have good lyrics. I showed you My All, Vision of Love, Always Be My Baby, and Love Takes Time. If you listened to them, you'd hear the great love lyrics.

You said that Beyonce had a boring voice and boring lyrics. I showed you studio and live versions of Resentment, Halo, Broken-Hearted Girl, Sweet Dreams, and Dangerously in Love. All great voices and great lyrics.

And BTW, those lyrics are nice, but make no sense. They seem to just be using a whole bunch of words in an effort to be "deep". Here are some great lyrics...There you are holding her hand
I am lost
Dying to understand
Didn't I cherish you right?
Don't you know you were my life?

Even though I try
I can't let go
Something in your eyes
Captured my soul
And every night I see you in my dreams
You're all I know
I can't let go

Just cast aside
You don't even know I'm alive
You just walk on by
Don't care to see me cry
And here I am
Still holding on
I can't accept
My world is gone
No, no

Even though I try
I can't let go
Something in your eyes
Captured my soul
And every night I see you in my dreams
You're all I know
I can't let go

Do you even realize the sorrow I have inside
Everyday of my life?
Do you know the way it feels
When all you have just dies?
I try and try to deny that I need you
But still you remain on my mind

Oh no I just can't get you out of my mind
I never can say goodbye
And every night
I see you in my dreams
You're all I know
I can't let you go

Even though I try
I can't let go
Something in your eyes
Captured my soul
And every night I see you in my dreams
You're all I know
I can't let goIf I could recapture
All of the memories
And bring them to life
Surely I would

Hear the distant laughter
Wasn't it you and me
Surviving the night
You're fading out of my sight
Swiftly

[Chorus:]
You're vanishing
Drifting away
You're vanishing

I was so enraptured
No sensibility
To open my eyes
I misunderstood

Now you're fading faster
It's suddenly hard to see
You're taking the light
Letting the shadows inside
Swiftly

[Chorus]

Reaching out into the distance
Searching for spirits of the past
Just a trace of your existence to grasp
And if somehow I could recapture
All of the memories
And bring them to life
Lord knows I would

But now you're fading faster
Getting so hard to see
Taking the light
Letting the darkness inside
Swiftly

[Chorus]
Not more than three short years ago
I was abandoned and alone
Without a penny to my name
So very young and so afraid
No proper shoes upon my feet
Sometimes I couldn't even eat
I often cried myself to sleep
But still I had to keep on going
Never knowing if I could take it
If I would make it through the night
I held on to my faith
I struggled and I prayed
And now I've found my way

Chorus:
If you believe in yourself enough
And know what you want
You're gonna make it happen
Make it happen
And if you get down on your
knees at night
And pray to the Lord
He's gonna make it happen
Make it happen

I know life can be so tough
And you feel like giving up
But you must be strong
Baby just hold on
You'll never find the answers
if you throw your life away
I used to feel the way you do
Still I have to keep on going
Never knowing if I could take it
If I would make it through the night
I held on to my faith
I struggled and I prayed
And now I've finally found my way

Chorus

I once was lost
But now I'm found
I got my feet on solid ground
Thank you Lord
If you believe within your soul
Just hold on tight
And don't let go
You can make it
Make it happen

Chorus

O.O <-- This is my friend. His name is opinion, and he is mine.

Oh, wow. I don't mean to curse again, but Merlin's pants! You say that those lyrics don't make any sense? Just because you might actually have to dig a little bit deeper doesn't mean they make no sense. They are actually deep, and they are beautiful, and they do make sense. Just because they aren't performing a striptease in front of you to display their meaning doesn't mean they're senseless.

Now, here's my 5 minute evaluation of what I think those lyrics are about.

1) Song number one! She's seeing the man she loved holding hands with someone else, and it breaks her heart because he meant so much to her.

2) Number two, come on down! She's talking about a...once again...broken heart! And she's reminiscing on all the times she spent with the person. Either that or her partner died.

3) The third one is deeper, which is nice. It's about her humble beginnings and how she never lost faith. It seems quite inspirational, which is nice, and it not being a love song is also quite lovely.

Now, a few of my favourite lyrics:
"Amie," by Damien Rice:
Nothing unusual, nothing strange
Close to nothing at all
The same old scenario, the same old rain
And there's no explosions here
Then something unusual, something strange
Comes from nothing at all
I saw a spaceship fly by your window
Did you see it disappear?

Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of O
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me
Nothing unusual, nothing's changed
Just a little older that's all
You know when you've found it,
There's something I've learned
'Cause you feel it when they take it away

Something unusual, something strange
Comes from nothing at all
But I'm not a miracle
And you're not a saint
Just another soldier
On the road to nowhere

Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of O
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me

And Amie come sit on my wall
And read me the story of O
And tell it like you still believe
That the end of the century
Brings a change for you and me

"Older Chests," by Damien Rice. I'm a sucker for his music:
Older chests reveal themselves
Like a crack in a wall
Starting small, and grow in time
And we all seem to need the help
Of someone else
To mend that shelf
of too many books
Read me your favourite line

Papa went to other lands
And he found someone who understands
The ticking, and the western man's need to cry
He came back the other day, yeah you know
Some things in life may change
And some things
They stay the same

Like time, there's always time
On my mind
So pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time

Older gents sit on the fence
With their cap in hand
Looking grand
They watch their city change
Children scream, or so it seems,
Louder than before
Out of doors, into stores with bigger names
Mama tried to wash their faces
But these kids they lost their graces
And daddy lost at the races too many times

She broke down the other day, yeah you know
Some things in life may change
And some things they stay the same

Like time, time, there's always time
On my mind
So pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time,
Time, there's always time
On my mind
Pass me by, I'll be fine
Just give me time

"3 Rounds and a Sound," by Blind Pilot:
They're playing our song
They're playing our song
Can you see the lights?
Can you hear the hum?

Of our song
I hope they get it right
I hope we dance tonight
Before we, get it wrong

And the seasons
Will change us new
Be the best I've known
and you know me
I could not be stuck on you
If it were true

I was sleeping
My eyes were dark
Til you woke me
And told me that opening
is just the start
it was

Now I see you, til kingdom come
You're the one I want
To see me for all the stupid shit I've done

Soil and six feet under
Killed just like we were
Before you knew you'd know me
And you know me

Blooming up from the ground
3 Rounds and a sound
Like whispering you know me
And you know me

So this was our song
This was our song
I still see the lights
I can see them

And the criss-cross
Of what is true, won't get to us
Cause you know me
I could not give up on you

And the fog of what is right
Won't cover us cause you know me
I could not give up a fight

Soil and six feet under
Killed just like we were
Before you knew you'd know me
And you know me

Anyway, I'm feeling we've gotten off-topic. Basically, I don't think Mariah Carey and Beyonce are the best singers. I think that people with unique voices and incredible lyrics are, such as Lisa Hannigan, Damien Rice, Lisa Mitchell, Conor Oberst and Regina Spektor.

No need to curse! ;)

You know, I love this discussion. :) I really don't understand the lyric you posted. Could you explain? And yes, Mariah is the Queen of love songs. It seems as if you don't have an appreciation of love songs, but many people do. You seem to like more angsty type lyrics. I prefer more romantic, sweet lyrics. And BTW, Mariah doesn't strip. ;)

And with your lyrics, I see the same: lots and lots of words and metaphors, but the lyrical content is all over the place.

More great lyricsHow can I just let you walk away
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking
Every breath with you oohhhh
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all

How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
There's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
So take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me, is against the odds
And that's what I've got to faceeeee

I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one
Who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now
'Cause there's just an empty space
There's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
So Take a look at me now
Cause there's just an empty space
But to wait for you is
All I can do
And that's what I've got to face.
Take a good look at me now
'Cause l'll still be standing (standing here)
And you coming back to me is against all odds
That's the chance I've got to take
(chance I got to take, got to takeeee)

Yeahhhhh
Take A look at me now
(Take A Look at me nowwwww)If you're lonely
And need a friend
And troubles seem like
They never end
Just remember to keep the faith
And love will be there to light the way

Anytime you need a friend
I will be here
You'll never be alone again
So don't you fear
Even if you're miles away
I'm by your side
So don't you ever be lonely
Love will make it alright

When the shadows are closing in
And your spirit diminishing
Just remember you're not alone
And love will be there
To guide you home

Anytime you need a friend
I will be here
You'll never be alone again
So don't you fear
Even if you're miles away
I'm by your side
So don't you ever be lonely
Love will make it alright

If you just believe in me
I will love you endlessly
Take my hand
Take me into your heart
I'll be there forever baby
I won't let go
I'll never let go

Anytime you need a friend
I will be here
You'll never be alone again
So don't you fear
Even if you're miles away
I'm by your side
So don't you ever be lonely
It's alright
It's alright Somehow I know that
There's a place up above
With no more hurt and struggling
Free of all atrocities and suffering
Because I feel the unconditional love
From one who cares enough for me
To erase all my burdens
And let me be free to

[chorus]
Fly like a bird
Take to the sky
I need You now Lord
Carry me high
Don't let the world break me tonight
I need the strength of You by my side
Sometimes this life can be so cold
I pray You'll come and carry me home

Can we recover?
Will the world ever be
A place of peace and harmony
With no war and with no brutality?
If we loved each other
We would find victory
But in this harsh reality
Sometimes I'm so despondent
That I feel the need to

[chorus]
Fly like a bird
Take to the sky
I need You now Lord
Carry me high
Don't let the world break me tonight
I need the strength of You by my side
Sometimes this life can be so cold
I pray You'll come and carry me home

Keep your head to the sky
With God's love you'll survive

Fly like a bird
Take to the sky
I need you now Lord
Carry me high
Don't let the world break me tonight
I need the strength of You by my side
Sometimes this life can be so cold
I pray You'll come and carry me home
Carry me higher, higher, higher
Carry me higher, higher, higher
Carry me home
Higher Jesus
Carry me higher LordI've often wondered if there's
Ever been a perfect family
I've always longed for undividedness
And sought stability

A flower taught me how to pray
But as I grew, that flower changed
She started flailing in the wind
Like golden petals scattering

CHORUS 1:
And I miss you dandelion
And even love you
And I wish there was a way
For me to trust you
But it hurts me every time
I try to touch you

But I miss you dandelion
And even love you

I gravitated towards a patriarch
So young predictably
I was resigned to spend my life
Within a maze of misery

A boy and girl befriended me
We're bonded through despondency
I stayed so long but finally
I fled to save my sanity

CHORUS 2:
And I miss you little sis and
Little brother
And I hope you realize
I'll always love you
And although you're struggling
You will recover
And I miss you little sis and
Little brother

So many I considered
Closest to me
Turned on a dime and sold me
Out dutifully
Although that knife was chipping
Away at me
They turned their eyes away and
Went home to sleep ...

CHORUS 3:
And I missed a lot of life
But I'll recover
Though I know you really like
To see me suffer
Still I wish that you and I'd
Forgive each other
'Cause I miss you, Valentine
And really loved you

I really loved you -
I tried so hard
But you drove me away
To preserve my sanity -

And I found the strength to break away
Fly...One summer night
We ran away for a while
Laughing, we hurried beneath the sky
To an obscure place to hide
That no-one could find

And we drifted to another state of mind
And imagined I was yours and you were mine
As we lay upon the grass
There in the dark
Underneath the stars
(Young love)
Underneath the stars
(Young love) ohh baby

Weak in the knees
Wrapped in the warm gentle breeze, and I,
So shy, a bundle of butterflies
Flush with the heat of desire
On a natural high

As we drifted to another place in time
And the feeling was so heady and sublime
As I lost my heart to you
There in the dark
Underneath the stars
(Young love) ohhhhhh

Ohh, Beautiful and bittersweetly
You were fading into me
And I was gently fading into you
But the time went sailing by
Reluctantly we said goodbye
And left our secret place so far behind
And I lay in bed all night
And I was drifting
Drifting
Drifting
Drifting

And I was yours
And you were my own
My own baby
As we lay
As we
Lay underneath the stars
(Young love)Now imagine these lyrics being sung by a woman with a 5 octave range voice.... and you get the wonder that is Mariah Carey.

Trust me, I'm enjoying this discussion as much as you are.

I do have an appreciation of love songs, but I find many of them to be simply boring. And I will be the first to admit that I love angsty lyrics. Not necessarily angsty music, but lyrics, yes.

Okay, time to put my explanation hat on:

"Poison Oak," by Bright Eyes: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3FHz2mXLj8)
This song is dreadfully sad. It's about a friendship that Oberst, the lead singer of Bright Eyes and writer of the song, had when he was a child, and it talks about their childhood together.

In Polaroids you were dressed in women's clothes
Were you made ashamed?
Why did you lock them in the drawer?
This part of the song was about the friend being made ashamed of his confusion with his sexuality. As the song progresses, it talks about his friend running away, eventually developing a drug addiction:

And I don't think that I ever loved you more
Than when you turned away
When you slammed the door
When you stole the car and drove towards Mexico
And you wrote bad checks just to fill your arm

A lot of discussion has said that the friend later committed suicide:

And I'm glad you got away, but I'm still stuck out hear
My clothes are soaking wet from your brother's tears
The last part of the song is talking about his state when he remembers his friend after his death:
Now I'm drunk as hell on a piano bench
And when I press the keys, it all gets reversed
The sound of loneliness makes me happier

All in all, it's a very tragic, yet beautiful song.

"Amie," by Damien Rice: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcAcG2QalVw)
First of all, I may be a bit biased towards my love of the lyrics within this song. It is one of my favourites, and I strongly suggest you listen to it, because it's quite beautiful to me.
In my eyes, this song is about cycles of love. It is a love song, but it isn't blatantly so. Now, to go into a bit more detail about what it means:

Nothing unusual, nothing strange
Close to nothing at all
The same old scenario, the same old rain
And there's no explosions here
Then something unusual, something strange
Comes from nothing at all

To me, this lyric is about the boring, day-to-day life, when suddenly something comes and hits you from out of the blue, and it is utterly amazing, kind of like that tingly feeling when you fall in love. It talks about losing any spark of interest in life, and then finding someone who brings you back to life, so to speak.
The song as a whole is about not realizing what you have until it is gone, mainly with relationships, and Damien Rice's album O is all about that.

"Older Chests," by Damien Rice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ogVor9uZoo)
I absolutely love this song. It's about change, and how the world has become a much more materialistic place, and how we've lost touch with the finer things in life.

Older gents sit on the fence
With their cap in hand
Looking grand
They watch their city change
This is simply saying how the older generations are watching and seeing how the world is changing, for the worse in some cases.

Children scream, or so it seems,
Louder than before
Out of doors, and into stores with bigger names
Mama tried to wash their faces
But these kids they lost their graces
This bit is about how we seem to be growing up earlier, becoming more spoiled. Kids are moving from playing in the streets to having credit cards and mobile phones at age 10, and how they're growing up too quickly.

"3 Rounds And A Sound," by Blind Pilot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juvwlEO-x2o)
This is yet another beautiful song, and it's once again about change, but it is also a love song.

I hope they get it right
I hope we dance tonight
Before we, get it wrong
To me, this is about how they could lose it all at any moment. He's talking about playing their song, and how he wants to dance to it just once before it all falls apart.

And the seasons
Will change us new
But you're the best I've known
and you know me
I could not be stuck on you
If it weren't true
The song then goes on to talk about change, and how the two people in this relationship are changing, but their love remains because when it gets down to it, they still know the heart of the person. He talks about opening his eyes for the first time, and all he sees is the person who told him to do it, which I think is rather beautiful.

Now I see you, til kingdom come
You're the one I want
To see me for all the stupid shit I've done
This is about how he wants her to be the only one for him until they reach heaven/kingdom, and it relates heavily to the chorus, which is about after they've died. It talks about how they will still be together like they were in life, and, as cheesy as it sounds, how their love will turn to flowers and other beautiful things.

Phew. That took a while...

Yeah, those lyrics are pretty angsty. Beautiful and tragic lyrics, but I could never listen to them. Too much angst. I prefer beautiful romantic or inspirational lyrics. Lemme offer some of my explanations...

Fly Like A Bird
Mariah Carey

Somehow I know that
There's a place up above
With no more hurt and struggling
Free of all atrocities and suffering
Because I feel the unconditional love
From one who cares enough for me
To erase all my burdens
And let me be free to

The message is pretty clear. She's saying that she feels in her heart that there is a heaven where there's no sadness, pain, suffering, and full of love and care. It's a place where she's free to...

Fly like a bird
Take to the sky
I need You now Lord
Carry me high
Don't let the world break me tonight
I need the strength of You by my side
Sometimes this life can be so cold
I pray You'll come and carry me home

She's saying that she wishes she could well, fly like a bird. To be free and have no burdens, free to run away at any moment, like a bird. She's praying that God will give her this.

Can we recover?
Will the world ever be
A place of peace and harmony
With no war and with no brutality?
If we loved each other
We would find victory
But in this harsh reality
Sometimes I'm so despondent
That I feel the need to

Also literal. She asking when will the Earth be free of suffering, of sadness, pain, etc.

Now imagine these inspirational lyrics being sung by a sweet, 5 octave voice and you get this:

That, my friend is how it's done.

Even in not too deep pop songs, her sweet, 5 octave voice sounds like an angel. Look at this short 30 sec. video

If the meaning of lyrics is obvious and doesn't take much thought, than it's just not as interesting to me.

And All I Want For Christmas Is You is NOT a classic.

And All I Want For Christmas Is You is NOT a classic.Um, yeah it is. All I Want For Christmas is You IS a classic. They play it every single year around the holiday season.

By late 2006, it had become the best-selling holiday ringtone of all time in the U.S. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is the best-selling contemporary holiday ringtone in the U.S. for third consecutive year with cumulative sales topping 1.8 million, and is the first holiday song to sell one million digital downloads in the U.S. In December 2009 All I want For Christmas is You Became The World's First Double Platinum Holiday Ringtone Certified 2X Platinum By the RIAA in recognition of sales of more than two million units.

Not only does the song have many accolades and is known all around the world, but the album it was on, "Merry Christmas" by Mariah, is generally known as one of the best Christmas albums EVER by critics. The song even charts on the Hot 100 EVERY YEAR.

It's a classic. Don't hate.

Our views on what defines a classic are different, I guess.

I guess I never thought of this before, but Leona Lewis is right up there with Mariah Carey when it comes to singing talent. Especially in this song. (http://www.ilike.com/artist/Leona+Lewis/track/The+First+Time+Ever+I+Saw+Your+Face?src=onebox) I would listen to that over any Mariah Carey song any day.

Bleeding Love and Better in Time are some of her better songs, but overall, she's boring. Her latest album, Echo, was a bore. Every track sounded the same. Mariah's latest album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, is 10x better.

I'd rather listen to any Mariah song, from Vision of Love, to Always Be My Baby, Honey, My All, We Belong Together, Angels Cry, H.A.T.E.U, and It's A Wrap. All songs better than what Leona has ever done.

Lol, nobody is better than Mariah Carey.

And looks at these people saying Katy Perry, Pink, etc. Like WTF? People really need to be more cultured.

It's pretty much agreed among critics that Mariah Carey is one of, if not, the best singers the music business has ever seen.

critics are people who are paid to have an opinion. i can have one for free that, actually, i deem more valuable than theirs.

...mariah is just loud.
and in love with her own voice.
and its annoying.

and its annoying.Exactly how is she "in love with her voice"? And if she is, what's wrong with that? She makes money with her 5 octave range voice, why shouldn't she love and appreciate it?

Edith Piaf. I was practically raised on Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien and La Vie en Rose. If you haven't ever heard her sing i highly recommend you give her a listen. Though she sang in French, her voice is so deep and full with emotion that you don't have to understand a word of it to appreciate her talent.

(and, on that note, the film they made about her life called La Vie en Rose is absolutely fantastic. Marillon Cotillard gives a performance of the decade.)

being in love with someones own something, regardless of who the someone or what their something, basically means that at every point in time that you are around them, they are flooding your senses with that something. needlessly. arrogantly. constantly.*
mariah carey is in love with her own voice--she shoves it into otherwise pleasant intervals wherein something ELSE should be heard. yknow, like, instruments. and, um. thoughts.

whats wrong with it? uhhh...its arrogant, selfish, and downright annoying. i admire a beautiful voice but it has to know when to give it a rest, already. not everyone appreciates the limited abilities of the human voice box that much.

Um, what are you talking about? She sells music! Do you know what people use to make music, besides instruments? Their voice! Therefore, she is going to sing to make music. And when on promos, like talk shows and such, people are going to ask her to sing, and guess what, she's gonna sing! because that's what makes her money. That's not arrogant at all.

Using your "stripper" analogy (which is a poor analogy at best), a stripper makes money from their body. So because they show their body to make money, that makes them arrogant? Should they cover up their body just so that people like you won't call them arrogant? What kind of nonsense is that? Same thing applies to voice. You use what your mama gave you and you use it well (actually, Mariah learned to sing from her Mother, a trained opera singer).

And did you even listen to the whole song or did you click it and click back or x out? Because any non-biased, sane, smart, normal, etc. person wouldn't say that that song was "loud" or "annoying." In fact it's the opposite. The song is as actually quite soft.

And BTW, about critics, you're absolutely incorrect. Critics are trained in their profession. It's called a profession for a reason. They are trained. If they were just average Joes with an opinion, then wouldn't everybody be in a magazine or newspaper as a critic? There are film critics, music critics, art critics, video game critics, etc. These people study what they are critizing. They study films and music and art and video games, etc. They know what they are talking about. Who do you think gives an album an 69 on Metacritic.com, or gives an hotel 5 stars, or rates a restaurant 5 stars? Not your average Joe, I an tell you that.

You make it sound like the critics are some higher lever species, while actually they ARE your average joes; they may just have an expanded vocabulary in some areas. I have studied in music school for 11 years, listened thoroughly to music for years and I don't think my opinion is worth less than some music critic's opinion.

And talking of Maria - I can see that you like her and I respect it. At first I didn't want to say anything on this topic, but since you made an argumentum ad hominem and implied that sane and smart people don't find her voice annoying, I had to join in to mention that I consider myself sane and smart and I do find her voice annoying. I don't like it how her voice rustles (or whatever's the correct word in English) when she's singing quietly. And I also agree with SuicidiaParasidia, she is (or seems to be) so in love with her voice. I know a girl like this in real life. She has a perfect voice and a great talent, but I can't stand her singing, because she's just so overdoing it.

Anyway, to be on topic... I love Greg Graffin from Bad Religion. Yeah, he's not officially trained in music, but I love his voice and the songs he writes. Of course, he wouldn't be complete without BR's guitarist Brett Gurewitz, who writes just brilliant lyrics.

No, they aren't average joes. They are trained in what they do. They went to school to have a higher understanding of their subject matter of critique. Would you rather trust Chef Gordan Ramsey, a famed 5 star chef, on your homemade Mac&Cheese or your Grandma? You'd pick the one who really knows what he's talking about, Ramsey. I'd put critics opinions on a higher level than an average person who isn't trained and I'd also put your opinion on a higher level because you have been trained in music.

Incorrect. Previously, I had posted a song for Suicidia to listen too, because she claimed Mariah's voice was soft and annoying. She then said that it was loud and annoying, but although annoying is an opinion, loud really isn't. The song is a very soft song. Barely a beat, Spanish guitar, and Mariah's soft 5 octave voice. I was a saying that a sane/smart/etc. person couldn't possibly call that song loud. It's far from it.

Here's the song:

No, I understand what your saying, but I have listened to pretty much every Mariah song, on every album, and "every song is like..." isn't true.

My All, the link I posted ^^ is one of those songs that isn't "Look what I can do!". It's a very nice song to just listen too. And, there's no while in it (the very high voice Mariah does sometimes). You should listen to it.

But there are some songs that are "Look what I can do!" but that isn't negative. The song is still amazing. For example, my whole freaking neigborhood listened to this song all day on Christmas, O Holy Night by Mariah. She really starts showing off that voice after the instrumental break.

Such a beautiful song AND a beautiful voice.

Hmm, lemme see. No high notes? Check. No Screeches? Check. Could that possibly be Mariah Carey's voice? Yes.

Christina has a fantastic voice, but all she has is a fantastic voice. She is nowhere near a vocalist as Mariah, or even Beyonce. Yes, having an amazing voice is part of being a good vocalist, but the other part is control. Mariah and Beyonce both have control of their voices. They know how to move their voice the correct way, to hit the correct notes, to create technical melismas, etc. etc. Christina doesn't have this. Her voice goes all over the place sometimes.

BTW, Christina has also stated many times that Mariah is her biggest musical inspiration. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that she likes Mariah's voice...

I also think Mariah Carey is a wonderful singer, but since I don't really know much music vocabulary and wouldn't know how to debate with it anyway, and because I probably look like an idiot without an icon, signature, font, etc., I'll just leave this and go.

Would you rather trust Chef Gordan Ramsey, a famed 5 star chef, on your homemade Mac&Cheese or your Grandma? You'd pick the one who really knows what he's talking about, Ramsey.
This is a strange comparison. Being a chef requires certain knowledge and ability to cook. Especially, being a five star chef. On the other hand, not all food critics are chefs or even good cooks. I was talking about music critics opinion vs my opinion and said that I don’t deem mine less valuable. Of course, if a 5 star CHEF [not food critic] would comment my food or whatever, I’d hear his opinion. So your analogy wasn’t very good.

Returning to Mariah – I still don’t like her voice. “My All” was quite boring and I don’t want to comment O Holy Night, because I don’t like Christmas carols.

I think it's pointless to continue arguing on this topic. You can't convert me into liking her, so there's no point in dragging on this "debate".

theres a difference between showing off because you can and showing off to prove something; she has nothing to prove, so that should give you a clue. What? That makes absolutely no sense. So she should just sing a few words and let the instrumental play? That makes absolutely no sense. Songs have STRUCTURE. Do you know what that means? Overall, it's:

Verse 1
Chorus
Verse 2
Chorus
Bridge
Chorus

That's the basic structure of a pop song. It can be mixed around and played with, but most of the time, that's what they'll go with. So obviously, guess what? She's gonna have to sing during all those parts I listed. There is NOTHING wrong with that, even though you seem to have a problem with that.

i didnt listen to it. mariahs voice sucks. i am entitled to my views and i dont care what you think of me for disagreeing with you. :DThen obviously, people reading should disregard your opinion on that particular subject because your opinion seems to be stuck so up your... bowels?, that you'd rather keep an uninformed opinion rather than an informed opinion. That's why people would hold a critics opinion higher than yours because critics would have an informed opinion. They'd actually listen to the music before just calling it this or that just because the singer is Mariah Carey.

yeah, and im trained for typing. anyone can be a critic. give them a list of snide remarks and shitty attitude, and theyll be POPULAR critics. and yknow what? critics only represent THEIR point of view. its entirely possible-shock shock-that someone can find something that they disapprove of--oh gee, someone doesnt live by what the critics say?!--to be enjoyable, and visa versa. And I'll reiterate... Overall, it got a 64, which is generally favorable. It got universal acclaim from just 4 critics, which may be what your referring to. It got generally favorable reviews from 20 critics. It got mixed reviews from 10 critics. It got generally unfavorable reviews from 2 critics. So overall, critics didn't think it was the shit, or it would have gotten way more than 4 universal acclaims.

Should I go with with funny and nice Mariah that I've seen ever since 1990 when she first started as a nobody or the bitchy diva that people who don't know her say she is? I'm not pessimistic, so I think the answer is clear.

I think I've just about covered everything you said...

Next.

And Charice Pemgengco is great. She should definitely be on the list. But she's definitely not better than Mariah, and critics agree. ;)

Well, no. Not all of them have even higher education.Of course that's true. But the critics that are respected do have higher educations.

Some respected food critics are former 5 star chefs. Some are just people who had higher education, such as one who was accepted into a prestigious culinary arts school. And why would you deem your opinion of less value that anothers? Of course, since it's your opinion, your gonna deem it of higher value. That's just basic human nature.

And about O Holy Night, many people have said that it's one of just few Christmas songs that they like. You should listen to it, it's just a few minutes, can't hurt.

And just wondering, what kind of music do you like, not like?

Any average Joe has a opinion if music is good or not, but most of the critics are trained.
Mariah Carey has, technically, a great voice. She can reach the notes. However, I wouldn't say she was the best singer 'cause I don't like her style of music and the way she warbles, but saying that, most female singers do that. I prefer a more laid back, simply-singing-no-fuss attitude.
I guess thats why I love Johnny Cash. He has a amazing voice. Especially Hurt.

I wouldn't, again, say he was the best singer in the world. After all, have I heard all the singers in the world? No, I don't have much say really then. :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=clq01TXQR0sLol, I clicked on the link and I wanted to press back, because I can't stand Country, but I listened to it. You're right. He does have laid back, simply-singing-no fuss sort of voice.

IMO, I wouldn't call him the best in the world. He seems to just sing the plain, written down melody, which is what you like and that's great, but for me, I'd rather see someone take the basic melody, and add different vocal acrobatics, like melismas, octave changes, etc etc, which is something that some people don't like too. Each to their own.

I wouldn't, again, say he was the best singer in the world. After all, have I heard all the singers in the world? No, I don't have much say really then. Lol, none of us had. But you think that Johhny Cash is, and I think that Mariah Carey is, the best singer of all the singers we've heard in the world. ;)

It would be pretty damn heard to say the best singer in the whole world, seeing as their are over 6 billion people with vocal cords.

I'm not too keen on country, but that song gets me every time. That was the last song he recorded. He died 2 years later. That was his final farewell.

On a happier note, I love Joe McElderry's voice. :lovestruc He won x-factor (my mum voted for him 5 times  in the final! :giggler: ) He should be in musicals. :)
Amy Lee from Evanescence is brilliant too. ;)

Same here. I prefer honest, straight-from-the-heart singing. I need music that doesn't just reach my ears, but my heart as well.

All the fancy stuff does nothing to me. Sometimes it even annoys me, especially in those moments when it's clear that the singer, for the desire to show off, forgot about the meaning behind the lyrics. A song should send some message, a feeling, a memory, there should be a reason why the song does exist. But many singers ignore that and just concentrate on hitting the highest or the lowest note. And that's wrong, at least for me. The voice of a singer should bring the song to life, it shouldn't be just a way to show who's the best here.

A song should send some message, a feeling, a memory, there should be a reason why the song does exist.Well, when I listen to a Mariah song, like My All, I really do feel the feelings. I really do feel the feeling of longing and love. And if she just sang the basic melody, I'd be bored. But in my opinion, changing it up really does convey the emotion even more. But that's just my opinion. ;)

What? That makes absolutely no sense. So she should just sing a few words and let the instrumental play? That makes absolutely no sense. Songs have STRUCTURE. Do you know what that means? Overall, it's:

*cough*BORING*cough*

Then obviously, people reading should disregard your opinion on that particular subject because your opinion seems to be stuck so up your... bowels?,

people SHOULD do whatever they damn well feel like they want to do, not what some internet self-appointed princess thinks they should do. end of statement.

that you'd rather keep an uninformed opinion rather than an informed opinion. That's why people would hold a critics opinion higher than yours because critics would have an informed opinion. They'd actually listen to the music before just calling it this or that just because the singer is Mariah Carey.

ive heard her sing. as far as im concerned, that makes me informed. she sucks. cry about my refusal to kiss your ass elsewhere.

And I'll reiterate... Critics are trained in their profession.

and i'll reiterate: i couldnt care less. a snob with an opinion still only has an opinion. and given that there isnt only one kind of music out there, id say there isnt "one opinion to rule them all".

All I'm saying is that if someone reading this thread wants to form an informed opinion, you're opinion should be disregarded because you don't know what you're talking about, while VacuumMelon, because she seems to have a more informed opinion. You, on the other hand, is just talking to talk. And BTW, it's prince, not princess. FYI.

ive heard her sing. as far as im concerned, that makes me informed. she sucks. cry about my refusal to kiss your ass elsewhere. You're showing your ignorance more and more. You're not informed. If you don't understand why, then you need go back to school, and earlier grade, or something. It should be pretty clear why. And I really don't care if you kiss my ass or not. I thought I was having an intellectual discussion, although that's not the case. In any how, I could always continue the discussion with VacuumMelon.

and i'll reiterate: i couldnt care less. a snob with an opinion still only has an opinion. and given that there isnt only one kind of music out there, id say there isnt "one opinion to rule them all".If you'd pay attention, I said that you shouldn't take a critic's opinion as law. But most of the time, they are more informed. But you should balance it with non-critic's opinions. For example, when I go on, say, CNET, download a program or something, I look at the editors review (critic) and compare it to the user's review. If one is completely higher than the other, I'll probably go with a different product that's more equal, balanced. But you're just going to ignore what I say like so many ignoramuses in this world.

yawn, im done with you. this is getting boring. Yawn, I'm bored with you. You obviously don't have the level of brain capacity, or something, to participate in such a discussion.

Yeah, of course. I just pointed out that not all critics have it, hence their word shouldn’t be taken as absolute truth just because they’re critics.

And about O Holy Night, many people have said that it's one of just few Christmas songs that they like. You should listen to it, it's just a few minutes, can't hurt.
I listened to it before and although it’s techincally nice, Christmas carols just aren’t my type.

And just wondering, what kind of music do you like, not like?It depends on my mood. Sometimes I want to listen to something that is musically beautiful, that doesn’t necessarily need to have an extremely deep undertone (Evanescence, Eisley, Imogen Heap). Though usually I want to listen to something that has poignant social commentary and that at least partly beseems my political views (Bad Religion, Anti-Flag, Good Riddance, Leftöver Crack). A mixture of previous two is sometimes even better - I just love The World/Inferno Friendship Society and Emilie Autumn. And sometimes I crave classical music (mainly baroque era – Telemann, Vivaldi, Purcell, Bach, Monteverdi, Händel). [Sorry for namespamming :D]

And there's so much good music out there that I don't regard it necessary to point out the ones I don't like. [Unless it belongs to white power or some other disturbing genre.]

Perhaps I should have changed "you won't win" to "you won't be respected" or "you won't be taken seriously" or something like that. I thought it was clear. Duh, you can't win in an opinion discussion. But you can have a respectable, intellegent, and infomed discussion. Something that you seem to fail in. THAT's winning. Look at my discussion with Vacumm, which seems to be coming to an end since we're on the same page. That's an respectable, intelligent, and informed discussion. That's winning, for both sides. But anyhow, poor choice of words on my part. I should have known you wouldn't understand.

And to everything else you said, I'll just copy and paste:

Ehm...what the hell?

Anyways...
I think people are getting a little to worked up about this. The whole discussion has become about Mariah Carey. This whole discussion is based on opinion of what you look for in a good singer. I think we should all agree to disagree. A few of us don't like Mariah Carey. So, to us, she is not the best singer. Some people like Mariah Carey. So, to them, she IS\might be the best singer.
So, who do I think should be on the list?
- Amy Lee from Evanescence
- Leona Lewis
- Adam Lambert
And I'm sure people would disagree, but I'm fine with that.

Ha, I agree that Amy is a wonderful singer (Evanescence was my fave band for 4 years), but sometimes her live performances are very painful to listen to. Although this may be just because of my absolute hearing, it magnifies even the slightest mistakes. And I've noticed that she sings horribly when she's running and moshing on the stage; if she's behind the piano, she's much better, so it's forgivable.

Hm...well it's difficult...I think Kurt Cobain, Nina Simone, Bruce Dickinson, Paul Mc Cartney, Bon Scott, Layne Staley, Axl Rose, Jeff Buckley, Matt Bellamy, Freddie Mercury, Robert Plant, Sebastian Bach ( Skid Row), Robert Smith, Bono, Morrissey, David Lee Roth and lots of other singers...the list could go on until the end of the world XD

I hate to burst your bubble here, but Kurt cobain could not sing AT ALL. For instance i am a huge fan of the doors, but Morrison really couldn't sing that good. It's just their voices that go with the music.

The first name that popped into my head was Tom Jones. And Freddie Mercury should deffinitly be in such a list as well.

Imo a critics job is to describe something to people who haven't experienced it rather than to judge whether it is good or bad.

Music is an art form so a critic judging it as perfect ultimately means nothing as a piece of art that is technically correct can still be disliked by the majority of society.

Critics slammed so many of the most talented painters and yet their brilliance was discovered years after they died, and people now pay millions for one painting. So who was wrong, the critics or the public?

Every individual's opinion of a piece of art is equally valid regardless of how educated they are in the field. Art is meant to be emotive and what someone gets out of a piece of art is dependent on so many internal factors that two people hearing the same thing will experience it in completely different ways.

Have you seen her perform Single Ladies before? If you watch awards shows, like the AMAs or VMAs or something similar, you probably have. It's straight through, non stop choreographed dancing for the whole song. And she sounds even better than the studio version.

Christina Aguilera has a strong voice, but I still have to say Gerard Way. Not just because he has a unique, pretty voice but because he has good ideas. What makes a good singer good? Their voice? Their ability to write and perform both? The fact that they not only sing, but they are also a good person? All of those things make Gerard the best in my opinion. Except he swears too much.

I kinda disagree.

I think what makes a good singer a good singer is their voice and their ability to use their voice (i.e. techniques, control, etc.).

What you're referring too would be the best musician. Being a musician is a lot more than just being able to sing well and have good control. It's about the things you said too.

Ok, yeah, you're right.

The amazing thing is that Jimmy Sullivan was good at all of these things, had amazing control over his voice. Especially when pretending to sing as a girl or screaming.

But he was also an amazing performer, mastered piano and drums, and whoknowswhatelse. He could also sing and play at the same time. Truly talented. But I'm getting off the subject.

Count me in the Mariah bandwagon  I love her voice; its so distinctive and nobody can hit the notes or do voice acrobatics like she can. Whether you like her or not, she is definitely one of the music legends of our time. I can totally understand how some people find her voice annoying though, like how I don't quite like Celine Dion's voice. Listen to "When you believe" by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston..it's absolutely beautiful when two amazing singers come together.

You can't ever say "[insert name here] is the best singer in the world!!" because it's just not fair! D: That and I'm indecisive.

BUT, first name that comes to mind is Arika Takarano of Ali Project. :D
She can go higher than you could ever think of, sings perfectly in french and chinese,
and her voice can go from beautifully sweet to bitterly cold, yet still be pure sugar to my ears. *fangirl-rant over*

Sade Adu has a gorgeous voice, as well! All her songs leave me in a drooling stupor. D:
Timeless, elegant... so many things could describe her. :bunny:

But I can't pick the best singer in the world, seeing as it's impossible to unless you have either 50,000,000 heads,

Gotta love Chad Kroeger :) I like the Linkin Park singer too, that Bennington guy with all the hideous tattoos. He's really good even when he sings live.
I hate people who never write their own lyrics or suck at performing live. When you know it's all put together in a studio because someone can't carry a tune to save their life or the singer doesn't give a shit about what they actually sing, it takes all the fun out of listening to the music.

My idea of "best singer" will probably be somewhat different from others' ideas because I was in choir for 8 years, so I tend to look more closely at technique and I have a greater appreciation for choral pieces. I think that the King's Singers are wonderful singers and excellent entertainers. I think that Roberta Flack has a lovely voice and good technique. Pat Benatar has amazing vocal control and an energetic style.

I'm not actually as picky about music as I may seem, as I listen to a lot of songs where I think that the singer is mediocre at best. Basically, the singing in the song isn't the only thing that makes it enjoyable. I like a lot of classical, so obviously the instrumentals have a lot to do with my enjoyment of a song as well. :)

There isn't any one BEST singer for me, but Namie Amuro, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Michael and Janet Jackson do a pretty good job

I have to agree with you over Ayu - she's been in the Japanese recording industry for a long time, and her voice is very pure and sweet. Her style of songs may have changed over the 12 years she's been in the recording industry, but her voice has stayed the same. I won't say she's perfect, but she is a really great singer. IMO, Japan seems to have higher standards for vocalists than other countries.

I can't agree with Namie Amuro, though - I sing classical music, and her voice sounds quite nasal to me, personally. Might be just me though.

Okay, I take back everything that I might've said about Ayu. In Japan, she's a good singer. But... yes, Takarano-san is a wonderful singer. ALI PROJECT is one of the best groups I've ever heard. For me, she's the best singer I've personally heard.

This was a song he preformed before AI and everytime I listen to it I get chills. I just think it's beautiful and if those people knew he'd win the show they would've shut up and actually listened! lol

But really, asking who is the best singer in the world is like asking who the best painter is..Everyone has different tastes. I myself, like singers who can hit notes that others can only dream of but also make me feel the emotion from the song through their voice. These are just a few of the people who can. Honestly, I hope there is never a moment when I settle on loving just a few. I want to surround myself with many great voices, not just one.

I know many of you will disagree with me, but to me my favourite vocalists are Avril Lavigne, Matt Bellamy and Amy Lee.

Now, I don't know a very wide range of singers or musicians, but these are my three favourites.

Most people say Avril whines and is a horrible singer, but I like her voice. After seeing her live, her voice is amazing. It's controlled, powerful and she sang everything perfectly. She's a wonderful singer IMO, not the best, but to me, she's definitly up there.

While Matt isn't a conventionally good singer, his technique is brilliant. Yes, his breathing can be annoying and really loud, but it doesn't bother me. I love his voice and the little imperfections make his voice all that much better IMO. Also he plays guitar and prances around on stage so his voice isn't going to be perfect live. However, the four times I've seen Muse live, every concert he sounded great.

And Amy. She's been mentioned a few times in this thread. She's a wonderful singer, yet I can't properly judge because I haven't seen Evanescence live, and live recordings, even from your camera at the concert, sound different to how you hear it when you're there at the time (if that makes sense). Hopefully I'll see them live on their next tour and then I can see for myself the quality of her vocals.

All are unique vocalists, and are great in their own way. I think I'll throw KT Tunstall into this list aswell, however, I haven't seen her live, either, so I can't judge fully.

Regina Spektor, no question about it.

I don't think she the best singer ever, but she is one the most underrated, IMO.

Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, etc. are great singers but their voices aren't what they used to be.

I would probably have to say Beyonce.

Good god. This whole thread I've only seen one mention of the man that pops into my mind. Freddie Mercury all the way. Seriously. I may have missed some though.

If I had to choose others, I'd go with Ronnie James Dio easily, Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Pat Benatar, Roy Orbison, Jim Morrison, David Bowie, Bruce Dickenson, and Hansi Kursch. Not even in that order.

Lady Gaga
I've listened to music for 35 years and had always had a current favorite...But the last few years I'd grown so bored with the music coming out. So many artists, so little talent. I'd resorted to listening to the music I've listened to since the 70's. But my heart was not in it. But since I've discovered Lady Gaga last year, I now have that spring back in my step and a little bit of "feel good" music that makes me feel young and carefree again. And her antics just crack me up in these times of gloom and doom. Lady Gaga rocks!

Right now in pop: Christina Aguilera.

I think I would agree. her voice is beautiful. she has plenty of different ranges so she can do a lot with her voice and she can hold notes for a while.
sometimes she oversings tho or holds the notes too long..that's her only problem.

Someone I saw live last year is Jimmy Gnecco, he did an acoustic set at the royal Festival Hall in London, and was unbelievable the range of his voice is truly amazing. link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8nrr2U2K45Q&feature=related)

He is the frontman for an American band Ours.

I also think Chris Cornell is much underrated and at his peak had one of the best rock voices ever.

And Fyfe Dangerfield of the Guillemots - again amazing live

and this guy is pretty awesome

Ed Kowalczyk, the lead singer from Live. :)

as is

Thom Yorke (Radioheads lead singer) for me.

Radiohead are magnificent live

i'd agree with Freddie Mercury and i love Kurt Cobain's throaty , gruff voice :)and you can't not love Otis Redding's vocals

too many to call it for me lol

I'm not even sure what to base the criteria for judging on. Technically perfect singing is not always the best. Sometimes it's a voice that moves you and is distinctive but not perfect. I love so many artists and most of my favorites would never be classified as technically perfect. For sheer vocal range and power though I have to go with Aretha Franklin for females and Freddy Mercury for males.

^ :O I was totally just about to post that when I saw this thread.

Björk's voice IS an instrument, it's unique and magnificent and can convey any emotion humans are capable of feeling...What a person. I think she should be a role model to young kids instead of all these Disney 'good girls' who are so boring and manufactured. She is herself through and through, and always has been. People like Selena Gomez or something are just a product and are completely distorting the music industry. Björk is the real thing.

My Opinion for Best Singer in the world is Gerard Way from My Chemical Romance. A close second is Amy Lee from Evanescence. But Gerard has the voice of an angel. I guess I also have to say that Frank and Ray from MCR are the best along with Gerard since they are the backup singers and, well, who doesn't love Frankie, seriously?!!!!

Well, I have several people whose voices I enjoy. I think for male singers I enjoy Michael Jackson the most. He had an incredible range that very few singers (at least the men) have. I also enjoy Usher; it's just a shame he's fallen into the dance/electro craze but his earlier music shows his vocal talents well.

I listen to female singers more. I think Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston are some of THE best singers ever known, but their peaks have long passed sadly. I still listen to their music more than most of the current singers (who have the unfortunate tendency to sound better in studio than in front of a mic excluding Beyonce and Lady Gaga).

Wow, that's a comprehensive collection of great singers. Yes, it's hard to choose just one, especially if we go back over several decades, and it's even harder if we're not just talking about rock or pop but all musical styles.

Sticking with rock (as I'm a rock chick) and great singers who are around now, for me it's always this guy who comes to mind - he has such a fantastic expressive voice. Ben Ottewell from Gomez: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S8bDpzpDVu4 . Also, Christina from Lacuna Coil: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ly9E30Hc5pg , Tarja when she was with Nightwish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjd-VLB82FA , and finally, getting a bit - well, a LOT - grittier, Till from Rammstein (my fave band): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XvyI01SC8M

Going back over the decades to classic rock, the two who always stand out most for me are, from the late 1960s, Tim Buckley, who had the most gorgeous voice ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMTEtDBHGY4 and the powerhouse Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfV33HwWkVQ . They just don't make 'em like that anymore!

Some great singers you've got there aswell! :) I guess there's loads of great vocals in other genres aswell, but like you I mostly listen to rock and alternative music. Some pop or dance for parties, but those artists usually can't sing THAT wellxD

True story! Today's singers use so many filters that ANYONE can be "good". Autotune is the new photoshop. Older singers never had this option and therefore hearing voices like Mercury's is a pure pleasure for the ears :) There are only a few singers today, from the commercial choices, that I find great. Like Adele, Gotye etc. Those more alternative singers.
