The book register works as you would think.
The general store register sells nothing.
The food store register sells everything the grocery store does(minus everything non-food), and also some prepared food.
the nectary register works as it should(as long as you have nectar racks in the lot).
The relics register actually stocked one thing(a piece of quartz). The next day it stocked geodes, gold, and Septerian Nodules.

Yeah, the relics and prepared food inventories are random. The food register is the best one, means you can make a nice cafe.

I used that useless "rave warehouse" community lot in Riverview to make a nice (if run-down) market :)

The registers, btw, are in the Community Lots section of build mode... which might not be the first place you'd look for em, since they are really more like Buy Mode objects :) So, naturally, you can only use em on community lots.

The prepared food is random? I have gotten the exact 3 same prepared food each day. Maybe it changes in riverview but not sunset valley. Or I'm just unlucky.

I'm wondering if anyone has tried going to Edit Town and edit this working commercial cash register lot: build a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, whatever. Go back to game and see if it's still working.

Then go Edit Town, change it to residential, move your sims in. Townie sim shows up to man the register? Other sim comes visiting, buys stuff at the register and the money comes into your household?

Nope, it doesn't work that way. When you go to change a lot's type, it removes items that aren't supposed to be there for that lot type.

Like, if you have a house with a stove and turn it into a community lot, it deletes the stove. So if you have a community lot with cash registers and turn it into a residential lot, it deletes the registers and any other community items.

I could have sworn I replied to this thread only a couple of hours ago?

Lay off the drugs, Inge!

Seriously though, I think there may be a syncing issue. I see posts vanishing too.

When I place them on a community lot in my main town, it just says it's closed when I highlight any options on the register. How to I get them to work? . . . Thanks in advance for the help.

By being patient. A register can't open without a sim at it.

Also, AwesomeMod lets you swap community/residential at will without objects disappearing, but I do not know if their functionality remains(residential objects do, but registers? No idea.)
