A question for the MTS community. Pretty much a game that made you drop a few tears. And I want answers from the guys too. LOL. Also go into some details why you chose that game. I would like to hear from the you guys first before I post mine.
SPOILER ALERT
I forgot to mention this but this section would contain SPOILERS. You've been warn.

In Mass Effect 2 there was a mission to go back and collect the dog tags of your previous crew and I cried when the flashback cut scenes would come up on different locations. It was like memories of those people that died and you knew them well from the first game. The game itself isnt sad, but that scene made me cry. My fiance made fun of me for it, but I thought it was depressing. The music made it even worse.

Final Fantasy VII makes me cry when Aerith dies... It's more painful than FF X's ending.
FFVII, the saddest game, IMO.

Games like Rise of Nations, CivCity Rome etc. Every time I spend an hour planing out how the whole region is built or how the city is laid, I always comeback to find it it changed somehow when I revisit the region or when I progress through out the missions.
Really annoying. *Tear*

The saddest game? It would be a tie between Chrono Trigger and F.E.A.R.
In Chrono Trigger the main hero is lost in time toward the end, and you must continue the game with the second in command. If you get the good ending, however, after the credits you see the second in command running towards a mysterious door. Inside the door, running toward the camera, is the silhoutte of the main hero.
In F.E.A.R. the sad part is found on the last level. Alma's rage is understandable, though etherial, and the worst thing is that there is nothing you can do to have her rest in peace.
Another sad game is a Masters of Orion clone. I can't remember the name anymore, but I think it was something like Galactic Imperium, or Imperial Galaxy ( NOT Galactic Civilization ). It was sad game in the same way that Gigli was a sad movie - both were absolute disasters in what they were trying to achieve.

lovetadraw you're right. FFVII was pretty sad. After I level up Aerith pretty high and got her final limit break (forgot what but which was very useful), the next thing you know she dies. The real hero of that game if you ask me. FFX was sad too but you kind of knew that was going to happen.
For me the game I thought was pretty sad is The Lost Odyssey for the Xbox 360. You have to understand the hero of that game. Kaim, who can't ever die but wants to die because he had seen too many death. He had so many wives and kid but they all age and die but not him. He stays young. Plus all those memory that he remembers throughout the game were very touching and how they were told. Yeah I know very cliche for the JRPGs on how the main character lost his memory but it works. If I was Kaim and live that long, I would also want to die too.

Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Knowing the fate waiting the Exile and Revan and knowing they must leave behind so many good friends breaks my frozen heart. D: And the two robots... Please don't take the roboooots! ;_;
And that slow soundtrack as you see the spaceships going into nothingness.... *weeps*

I'll have to give the nod to Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.
One of the most emotionally engaging narratives in gaming and a genuine heart-breaker.
Zoe and Faith's parting had me bawl like a little schoolgirl. :P

I would say Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3.
It had three deaths that nearly brought me to tears (and I rarely cry).
The first was a drawn out sequence where you encounter a wounded enemy soldier who, despite all efforts to save him, dies.
The second is a heartwarming scene involving two of the most loved characters in the team, which gets cut short. The following few minutes are nothing less than tear-jerking and gut-wrenching.
The final one is a noble sacrifice which puts an end to the most badass character as well as the most despicable character in the game. Mixed feelings, but the sense of loss lingers after the scene ends.

It's not an especially strong example, but Icewind Dale has several sad moments scattered throughout the game. One example: In the town you start in (I forget the name), there is a fisherman who has dreams of a water nymph singing to him. The story of the water nymph's love for his long-dead ancestor, as well as the fisherman's wistfulness about the dreams after you help him get rid of them both make me a little sad. The music from that game really amplifies the effect too. The musical selections for the first town and for Kuldahar are really sad and wistful-sounding.
I know that there are other games that have made me sad, but no others are coming to mind right now.

My brother played Chrono Trigger and that didn't happen. Hmm.. Actually that's like one of those really annoying "were too lazy to make a solid story so we put random things together so that you have to tell the story" games. I hate ultra non linear games, don't ask why.
Oh... Aerith.... My BFF hates Aerith and loves that scene. See, from clouds POV, I prefer Aerith.
The ending of Kingdom Hearts (1) is pretty sad. And the part in FFVIII where Rinoa/Linoa/Lenore floats into space is a tear jerker. As I recall, she had several names depending on where it was released. Just trying to keep things straight.

Actually the story of Chrono Trigger is very solid, it just jumps around a lot because of the time travel. Nothing lazy about Chrono Trigger at all. In fact it was extremely innovative for its day.

Maybe lazy is the wring word. If I want to tell a story I will, but when I play a game, I prefer the story be told to me. A lot of newer games do that. It's just me. If I have to choose everything, then why play a game? Why not just stay in the real world?
Oddly, I love the sims.

The last time I bawled like a baby because of a video game was at the end of Fable II, when I picked the Needs of the Few, and the little message popped up, It was the part at the end where it said something like "your dog will never leave your side again."
I watched the dog that I grew up with put down a few years ago. And since then anything about dog mortality makes me cry. ._.
But yeaaa, More in Fable 2, I thought the stuff surrounding Oakvale was particularly sad. (The Snowglobe from Murgo? Yea thats Oakvale. Go look at the drowned farm and the bit of Oakvale you can see. its the sammeee.)

The end of Metal Gear Solid 3 is really sad - Snake learns about The Boss's lost child and how history will never tell the truth about her great deeds.
GTA Vice City Stories has a weepy moment too: after the penultimate mission where Armando Mendez is killed, Vic has to say goodbye to Louise after which she dies from her grievous torture wounds.

Hmmmmm, that is a really good question. I actually ave only cried at my mom and dad's funerals. But let's see, something that made me sad. Oh I know this one, Medal of Honor, Pacific Assault director's edition.
SPOILER ALERT
During the last mission after Frank dies (EVEN if you save him he dies in the last mission) when Your guy is talking about the new guys who just got put on the ship to absorb machine gun fire to get the experianced guys on the beach, and during the pearl harbor, the audio is insane, all the people screaming, the fire, the music, it sometimes makes me sad.

Lol, at the answer above! XD
For me, the first game that made me cry was Final Fantasy X, in some scenes tears in others, waterfalls (ending). Never thought another game would pull out more emotions but I was wrong.
Lost Odyssey. The most tear inducing game I've ever played. Many sad scenes*, in which the voice acting is top notch, also sad memories bits (for those who never played it, they're small parts of the game where the characters remember their past, it is in form of a story, you read it and there's ambience sounds/music and such, the images are minimalistic). I've never been much of a reader but I got so moved by those, they're written by a professional Japanese author and it makes me wish more games would do that.
* SPOILER ALERT!!!! :alarm:
The best example, when Kaim finds his long thought dead daughter Lirium but she's on her deathbed, sick. There was such powerful emotions in that scene. If anyone cares, check it out on youtube.

I actually found Neverwinter nights sad. There is a bit that isn't vital to the game; there is this town that have been cursed by having time not moving. There is this mystery and I accused the wrong person and so the guy who went free killed all of the village. That was sad.

Not the saddest game but certainly depressing is Kerry Turner's flash game - Enough (http://www.reallyfancy.com/games/enough/).
In it you play a little rabbit hopping about a field at night avoiding bats who are out to do bunny harm. The problem is that as a player you want to avoid the bats however, as our long eared pal continuously protests, the rabbit has had enough and just wants to die. It is a conflict between player and character that is a little disturbing. The game does not end until you grant the rabbit the peace in death they so desire.

It's a short game. I got chills all over my body when I realized what it was about, and it doesn't have a happy ending.
I think it will haunt a player for a while afterward, especially if you realize where the basis for the game came from. It's obvious that the developers did some research for it.
Spoiler? No. I think everyone should learn these lessons, and you will in real life. Sad but true.

Thank you for this.
What a beautiful adventure title and quite stirring.
The message is dealt with a little heavy handedly towards the end but the quality of the voice acting - particularly Amber's at the climax - still managed to wrench the heart some.
Even from a technical stand point it is one of the best looking Adventure Game Studios title I've seen.

The Sims 2.
When your favorite sims you play since he still a baby, grow up, getting older and then die because of old age.........that really shocking and sad. All his dream, story, and everything just gone.
I absolutely agree - I can't bear for any of my little simmies to die. I play with aging off so that they don't get old, and if anyone ever accidentally dies, I quit without saving so that I can replay in such a way that I can avoid them getting killed. (My hubby thinks I'm a total fool for having so much empathy for game characters, but I can't help it!)
Regarding other games, I agree with El Presidente about 'Dreamfall' - there are a lot of really moving moments in that. As well as the scene El Presidente mentioned, the scene where Zoe reunites the crazy old lady with her confiscated pet, 'Baby', always turns on the waterworks for me.
Likewise, the game that 'Dreamfall' was the sequel of, 'The Longest Journey': SPOILER: In the later stage of the game, when someone April was very close to is killed and she sits down and cries, 'Why does everyone I love have to die?', it always starts me crying too. /SPOILER
Also, in 'Deux Ex: Invisible War' where you've agreed to hack into a prestigious school's computer system to enable the young daughter of a poverty-stricken mother to attend the school so that she can make something of herself and save them from poverty. When you return to tell them the good news, they are so touchingly grateful and the mother insists you take the few pennies she has as a reward, and the game doesn't let you refuse the payment. Aw, I get misty even just remembering it!

I'll also throw in the scene where Wonkers (an artificial AI infused stuffed toy) sees Zoe 'asleep' and asks the question if she will want to play when she wakes up. That kills me each and every time.
And yes... my heart goes out to April in TLJ as well.
God I love Ragnar Tornquist. Now hurry up and complete The Longest Journey saga damn you. We need closure!

There is a part of the story that feels universal, where Cloud was lost in his childhood memories of children who didn't want to play with him because he was different ( somehow inferior ). I've felt that way many times in my childhood, but everyone has probably felt that. The part with Aeris, everyone could see coming. That she's the nicest character, the flowers in the church. Exactly the person for a Japanese writer to pick on.
*MORROWIND SPOILER*
Morrowind has a spectacular mod called Tamriel Rebuilt, with two map files. In one there is a situation with an orc in a dungeon who has been cursed and can't move. I've done everything I can think of to help him, heal, restore strength, feather. But nothing works and he tells me to save myself. He will be stuck there forever. It seems that the creators of the map moved on to other things without resolving the orc's fate. The sad part is that he will likely die of thirst, but is such a swell guy that he doesn't want to bother me.

For a series that didn't find its start until 2005 the games played like they were made ten years earlier. Would have been a competent companion of Resident Evil back in the day but now simply feels hackneyed and uninspired. They were moody but even in that department Fatal Frame had them beat.

Multiple games had multiple moments that really touched me. (MAJOR SPOILER ALERTS)
In Silent Hill: First game, Lisa's death, Alessa's death (Good and Good+ endings), Cybil's death (if you don't save her), Bad Ending (In which Harry's daughter Cheryl, joined with Alessa, has to be killed because you can't save her. She says "I love you, Daddy. Goodbye.", and Harry mourns her. Then the scene shifts to the car accident that happened before the game started, and you find out that Harry was dreaming the whole situation just before he died.) Second game, pretty much the whole game was really sad. It was a really twisted, tragic love story. Third game, Harry's death (BEST DADDY EVER. /sobsobsob) Fourth game: Cynthia's death (I hated her character, but the music and the atmosphere, and her trying to convince herself it was just a dream even though she knew otherwise just...It really struck a chord.)
Suikoden (first game): Gremio's death, Teo's death, Mathiu's death, Pahn's death (if you don't win his fight against Teo), when you find the Village of the Elves burned to a crisp, Ted's capture, Ted's sacrifice, Victor and Flik's sacrifice (I thought they died, then I found out about Suikoden 2. <3 Which I still haven't played. Damn. XD)
Shadow's death in Sonic Adventure 2 (I was twelve. He was a villain. Tragic past. He redeems himself, and then he dies for the world he had mistakenly wanted to destroy. ; _ ; Again, I was twelve when I first played it.)
Annnd I know this is for non-Sims games, but if my favorite Sims die, I burst into tears. ; _ ;
I'm sure there's a lot more, but since I've only been awake for about an hour, I can't think of them. XD

Sorry if I sound like a wuss on my saddest gaming expeirience.
The saddest moment in a game that I've played would have to be Grand Theft Auto IV. The game has a choice of two endings based on if you accept Dmitri's deal or seek revenge on him. If you accept his deal and do the mission, Niko's girlfriend calls him and cuts her connection with him for accepting Dmitri's deal. That's not the sad part. The next mission is Niko's cousin, Roman's wedding, whom he is very close to. As Roman and his new wife walk outside of the church, and mob vehicle stops, and a man shoots Roman and drives off.
If you seek revenge on Dmitri, you end up killing him, and Niko's girlfriend calls to tell him that she's proud that he went with his instincts. You then pick up Niko's girlfriend, Kate, and drive to Roman's wedding. As Roman and his new wife walk outside the church, one of the mob bosses Niko used to do bussiness with pulls up in a vehicle and aims to shoot Niko, but instead, ends up shooting Kate.
Both of these times, Niko wakes up devestated in a safehouse in Bohan.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey definitely was one of the most emotional games I've ever played, but it's already been talked about so...
I have to say the ending of Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was incredibly sad. The marines earlier was sad, but the thing about the fallen SAS at the end is no one would ever be know. These were the people who's families get medals and funerals without explanation as to exactly why the deceased was a "national hero."

My apologies for giving out part of the story. I promise to be more careful next time.

Call of Duty 2: big red one. The part where Brooklyn dies. He was the best character in that game ("I'm from the Bronx, Sir!") And he died on the last level. His last words? "Maybe we'll get through this war, together."

Tl;Dr version : WoW makes sadface.
WoW doesn't make you cry, but the people behind it have an unhealthy love of death and the killing of everything even remotely happy (sure, this is coming from the girl who spent her childhood settings sims on fire and taking screenshots of it - but that is irrelephant.)
A guy on an island run by the space goat things (Draenei) asked me to - no lie - collect the bones of his wife and children from the stomachs of Enraged Owlkin (pissed-off bear things with feathered necklaces that hoot like owls and have antlers and a beak.)
There are several quests, also, that go like, "Hey, I left my friend back there with those evil >insert terrifying beast which has attacked a town/camp<, can you go see how they're holding up?" "Oh my gosh, they're dead? /sobsobsobsobsob/" One involved a Night Elf (purple, glowy-eyed elf) getting killed by some murlocs (gibbering frog-people), and another an orc who died by...what was it? It was either evil flamingos("striders", whatever), or gnolls (gnolls = giant hyena-squirrels.)
Oh, and of course there's the general "The Good Guys Always Win, but at Terrible Costs and with Something Worse to Come Soon" theme of the entire game.
"We killed the demons that destroyed a whole bunch of places! Yay!" "Oh no! An uber-powerful zombie witch is sending dead things to kill us all! "Yay! We killed the zombie witch!" "Oh no, a giant dragon is coming to kill us all! Is there no end?!"
No, innocent citizens, there isn't.

Kingdom Hearts, and KH2 I bawled like a little baby on several occasions, never have before over a game. Some of the FF games where real Tearjerkers too. The Oddworld games where kinda sad too.
Spoilers -
I think on KH2 it was the fact Roxas ends up being just a nobody/shadow/heartless. And I was so mad and sad at the same time.

That has to be Syberia 2 when Kate arrives in Syberia and she and Hans Voralberg ride the mammoths into a mysterious world. It was the only game I shared a tear with. Not many people know Syberia, but it is a great game, with a great storyline.
Syberia and Syberia II are lovely games. I didn't shed a tear but finally making it to the mammoths with Hans was an incredibly happy moment in the series.

Baten Kaitos Origins.
I cried when Gina's wings of the heart were pulled out.
I cried when Milliarde attempted to sacrifice herself, and when Guillo took her place.
I was so upset when Shanath died and we learned the reason he was an a-hole.
And when you go back to the time of the gods and everyone who was apart of Malpercio died.
And when Milliarde freed the souls of those trapped in Rasalas.
When Sagi found out Milliarde had betrayed him.
When Quis died in Seph's arms I had to stop the game because I started balling...
But surprisingly, I laughed at the Heart to Heart with Sagi that determines if the game continues or not... Weird.
It is a very depressing game... But it is also probably one of the best games I have ever played and is therefore my favorite.

:alarm: Spoiler Alert! :alarm:
I agree, I haven't done that mission yet but I read about it and rather not finish it (I might do it on a savefile, but I like occasionally having Niko do something with those two plus being so close to his cousin that makes it so sad).
Zelda: Majora's Mask is kinda sad if you don't stop the moon in time, and you get to meet all those characters. Plus Ocarina of Time in the future, especially Kakorio or whatever village, the music sounds quite sad.
The ending of Oblivion also makes me a bit sad as well because of what happens in it.

My saddest gaming experiences have to be in Dragon Age: Origins, and Saints Row 2.
SAINTS ROW 2 Though every other part of the game are hilarious (to me), I did happen to shed a tear at the parts where Carlos and Aisha died. I don't know, I just got sad when I saw the look of torment on Boss' face when he had to end Carlos' life.
DRAGON AGE: ORIGINS When Morrigan left, no doubt about it. I didn't really cry tears of sadness, just ones of frustration and anguish. I mean, I spent the entire game trying to romance you, finally get you to admit your feelings for me, and then you just leave. :faceslap: WOW.

MW2's campaign and MW1 (COD4). Those are Call of Duty games, MW stands for Modern Warfare. I didn't cry, but those were the best freakin dramatic, action-y, adventurous, hilarious, etc. campaign known to the history of gaming. It fit all the categories except romance and horror.

Wait, you never got Crono back? I was under the impression you had to.... -__- You should though, it's part of the game. Go to the end of time, after Crono dies, speak with the Old Man. He'll give you the Chrono Trigger, go to the year 2300, go to Keeper's Dome, use the newly charged pendent and then you'll talk to the Nu, he'll tell you, you need to clone of Crono, go back to the fair in 1000 A.D. It's either the 40 or 80 pt mini game to get the clone, I'm not sure. The clone will be at Crono's house, it'll be in his room, talk to his mom. Go back to 2300, to the Keeper's Dome, speak to the Nu again, it'll send out 3 dolls to deaths peak. Go through Death's peak, watch the clip & you have Crono! :)
O.O That seems more like a rant lol

I love DA:Origins :D I didn't think Morrigan leaving was sad (although I was kinda like, awww boo), I was mad/sad she slept with Allistair though >.< what I found sad was, when I finished Origins, and went to play Awakening, I had a whole set of new characters. Yeah, but the compensation was Nathaniel. And Anders, Sigrun and Justice are fun too (in a dramatic sort of way at least for Sigrun and Justice). I like Awakening better than DAO, AAMOF. DAO has a huge story but it does go on a bit - the pacing is better in Awakening and the fighting is more interesting, more tactical. Still, neither are as much fun as Mass Efffect and ME2.
Funnily enough I started what will be something like my 10th playthrough of Torment over the weekend.

The Mission of New Alexandria in Halo: Reach and Dr. Halsey's monologue at the beginning and the ending of reach.
:alarm: SPOILER ALERT :alarm:
Not only does the music during the whole mission make me want to hide in my room, crying, the whole sense of loss during the entire mission, seeing the fall of Reach's "Crown Jewel" and the deaths of Jorge and Kat within two missions of each other break my heart. Not to mention that it's just a little apparent Carter kinda likes Kat. Finally, at the end of the mission, the first time I had actually played the game with subtitles on, I noticed the civilians talking during the ending cut scene. Then, Dr. Halsey talks about how you gave your courage to help reach. If you do the math on the date between the start of Halo:Reach, and the date it gives at the end, when everything on reach has grown back, you see it's been quite a while. I believe that it's Halo:Reach and the end of Halo 3, when everyone is dying, that I almost cried. And watching the memorial scene at the end of Halo 3 wrecked me, seeing that they think the Chief is dead.

I hate to admit it, but there were a couple of games that made me cry. The first was Vagrant Story when Sydney dies. The reason why it got to me so much is he's my favorite character. Actually I kind of cried when it's revealed the tattoo on his back was peeled off. I got so attached to him that anything bad that happened to him really affected me.
The second was Silent Hill 4. Again because of my favorite. I cried when Walter (the adult) died. Just seeing him reach toward the light, like he wanted to be saved just brought out plenty of emotion in me. It was even worse when his child self died. And they happen one right after the other.

If you pay much attention to the gaming press you'll be noting this little indie game popping up everywhere. Fact is that it is one of the most beautiful melancholy game experiences around.
It may start off with a very light comedic tone (which remains peppered throughout the game) but the underlying pathos quickly makes itself known. A story about longing, regret, growing up, love and companionship that will not soon fade from your memory.
I urge everyone to at least give the demo a go. Gameplay is light, I won't deny it, but the story so heart-achingly beautiful you just won't care. One of this year's gaming marvels.
