View Full Version : Kids keeping you from goals? Schlep them off to Boarding School!

 Sheesh! The kids keeping you from your employment or artistic goals? Turn aging off and schlep them off to boarding school until you obtain your goals. Even though I hate the idea of stuffing your kids into that boarding school closet and only taking them out occasionally to 'air', it is a handy way to maintain the kids without the daily grind of dealing with them. :heyhey: :P Poor neglected sim-kiddies.
Note: You have to age up babies and toddlers before you can stuff them into the boarding school closet.

Being that my Sims "Dislikes Children", yet she has two anyway, this is a neat little option. I enjoy it immensely.
However, I wish there was an option, like in The Sims 2: University, to enter an academic branch of town to monitor your children at boarding school.
At least it isn't like military school in The Sims. Wherein your children never came back.

So did my Simself.
For that reason, my dad made a joke about it being Bible Camp... ^^;;

Do the kids build skills at boarding school? I haven't played long enough to notice. Do they ever come home to visit?

Kids build skills depending on what school you send them to. Like, my sim gained gardening skill from going to the Peace And Love boarding school. I think they're supposed to come home during the weekends and for their birthday

They also gain specific personality traits, according to Carl's guide (http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/generations/boardingschools.php).
I haven't used it yet, but I'm sending off one kid to the Military academy tomorrow. I assume there's an option to take your kid OUT of boarding school, but I don't know yet.

Yes there are. You can use the computer to take them back home. I did it when my sim received a crying call from their son that he hated the school. I took him out because I fear it might damaged their relationship, although I'm not very sure if it would.

Like before, children come back when they're done. The difference is, in TS1, THAT NEVER HAPPENED BECAUSE THEY NEVER GREW UP.

Once you send the kids to boarding school they will stay there until they age up. If its a child then you get the option to bring them home once they've aged to a teen although you can also then send them back again. They don't visit but you can ring them and will get various messages like "hi i'm doing fine" etc...I left my child in when i received the message pop up saying they didn't like it (what kid does at the start) and i made them stay, i rang them the next day and they were loving it...no relationship hit. As they don't visit i tend to bring them home once they age to teen just for a couple of days to change hairstyle and to catch up on whats changed then i send them back off again to finish off their teen years.

I can't bring myself to send my child sim to boarding school. She's just too cute to play with

I don't like the idea of sending them off either but the sim I'm working with now, a young adult and sister to the kid, has no skills and she's trying to learn the architecture profession. The kid, left at home with the babysitter, had a proclivity of blowing herself up with the home chemistry set. lol

I havent played with kids yet, but Its kinda sad that your family isnt given like the option to bring them home to visit... I mean even your friends from WA worlds have the option to come visit.
Can you manually bring them home and then send them back whenever you want? Or once they are gone, thats it? If so.. I really hope a mod is created...

Haha, a "quirk" of the new boarding school system: Sims who graduated before Generations may have randomly been assigned to a boarding school. Here's an example: Skip Broke of the infamous Broke family is now a young adult in one of my saves. While cuddling with his girlfriend, he had the ability to "talk about Fort Starch Military Academy". Since he graduated before Generations was even announced, I was a little startled. Hee.
I can see boarding school being an excellent option for those families of mine who have children "for appearance sake".

Even the Sims from Egypt, China and France graduated from these schools. I only discovered this today. Zahra Diab(?) from Egypt came to visit my sim and she went to Fort Starch Military Academy. So did my sim. Spooky.
In general, I like the idea of boarding school in the game and have sent some of my sim kids there just to test it out. It means parents can focus on their careers and not have to worry about cooking for their kids or childcare if they work odd hours. I usually bring them home as teens so I can make them change their hairstyles, clothes etc/rebel/go to prom/do teen stuff and then I pack them off again to graduate. I don't know if I'll use it for all my sims but it will be especially useful for when I start to make big families again with lots of children. No room for more beds? Just ship a couple of kids off to boarding school until they can afford a bigger house!
Does anyone have a particular favourite boarding school they like to send their sim kids to? I usually end up sending all of mine to Military or Art school for some reason but it'd be interesting to try out the others to see what skills they'd gain ^^,

I'm sure those will come along soon, as well (hopefully) more school type options where we know what kinds of skills the kids will earn there. Does anyone know which one is best for muscians?
.... Maybe I'll have my YA adopt a batch of kids and send them off to the different schools and see shat comes of them.
part of me says, "You heartless meanie! Adopting them and stuffing them away immediately!" and the other part of me says, "They are just pixel dolls. They have no real 'personhood'. get over it and TEST! TEST! TEST!" Mwahahahahahahhaa

Kinda like Neverland, but with fatigues and no pirates. :anime:

I really wish they wouldn't send the children back home when they turn into teens. If you're playing that household, a popup will as if you want to keep Junior in boarding school as a teen. If you're not playing that family, the kid just automatically goes home. When I send my kids to boarding school, I want their little butts to stay in boarding school!

Has anyone else's teens randomly came back from boarding school and seemingly never go back, even though it says "enrolled in boarding school" on the job tab?
The son I sent off came back after one day and still hasn't went back.

Here's the thing I don't like about boarding school. Your kids don't end up knowing anybody! If your sim child grows up in Bridgeport or wherever, they end up meeting tons of people. When they get shipped off to boarding school, it doesn't even really appear that they get to know their classmates (if they've got any?!). They don't seem to build relationships at boarding school with their siblings in the same school either. That's kind of a bummer.

Yeah this has been reported as a bug...BUT did by any chance a prom happen on the day your teen came back?
I had this so i quit the game and tried again..they still came back so i tried waiting until the prom hadhappened sent them back off and they haven't come back this time. i'm wondering if a prom occurs whther a teen at boarding school is triggered to attend..mine tried to

I've been hoping someone will make a mod that brings the kids back for the weekends. Tried asking Pescado to bring it into AwesomeMod, but he refused as he doesn't like kid sims. :P
I've basically elected not to send any kids to Boarding School unless a mod like this turns up. Would it be such a chore to get them home on Friday afternoons and send them back again on Sunday evening/Monday morning?

I bet you the big fish secretly LOVES Sims kids but would never, EVER dare to admit it. It would crack that carefully contrived crusty exterior he's spent so many years cultivating. :jest: :heyhey:
