View Full Version : Whither the Mashugas? An informal challenge
SimMegaptera

Inspired by this thread: http://modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=370169
Way back in the days of TS1 there was a charmingly tacky couple by the name of Mashuga. Frankie and Sylvia Marie loved bright colours and animal prints and clothes that were twenty years out of date. They added a bit of spice to the neighbourhood. And yet when their friends got to TS2 the Mashugas were nowhere to be found.
The challenge is to bring them back. :) The only rules are to start your family with Frankie and Sylvia Marie Mashuga, make them at least somewhat resemble their TS1 selves, and to decorate their house (and their fashion sense) with the tackiest, loudest, most luxurious stuff you can find. (Yes, luxurious -- remember that these folks had a vibrating bed, and possibly at least one animal-skin rug.) Then post pictures for the rest of us to enjoy and cringe over.
Money cheats are allowed. We don't want a silly little thing like finances to get in the way of our quest for kitsch. Custom content is absolutely welcome, and when you post pictures it would be nice if you could credit the creators of any custom content that adds to the tackiness.
GO!

If I remember correctly, Frankie was a musician and Sylvia was in the paranormal business?
here (http://www.simechoes.org/simechoes1/maxis/homes/lot9/mashuga/mashuga9.html) are some useful pictures of the rear exterior and the interior. I also found Sylvia Marie's (http://thesims.neoseeker.com/w/i/thesims/thumb/6/62/TS_Personality_Mashuga_Sylvia_Marie.png/300px-TS_Personality_Mashuga_Sylvia_Marie.png) personality. No luck on Frankie yet.
(Too bad I can't find my original Sims 1 and Livin' Large discs, or I'd provide better pictures! These were just done from a GoogleImages search.)

Omegaaad, I love the Mashugas! If only I could find Frankie's disco outfit somewhere. I've been planning to recreate the Mashugas since like, ever!
@smellincoffee No, Frankie's a Bungee Jump Instructor in the Xtreme career.

Thought I would try to be helpful since I just happen to still have TS1 loaded on my computer.
Frank: Libra
Occupation: Bungee Jump Instructor
2 neat
7 outgoing
5 active
5 playful
6 nice
Sylvia: Aquarius
Occupation: Psychic phone friend

And a few photos of them and their house, these are TS1 photos so no way to get a closeup but I did the best I could.

I might decide to do this. I don't and never have had Sims 1, because I started with Sims 3 and then went backwards to 2. But they sound interesting, and there really isn't any household like them now.

I need to get some tackier suits for Frankie. Sylvia Marie wears track pants and tank top; the tackiest male clothing I have doesn't have a fat morph, so it looks like Frankie has been working out. Can't have that...

Yeah, people complain about how fugly Maxis clothes are, but there's something liberating about having one or two sims you can allow to be all out tacky, and let your bad taste run riot. The richest sim in my hood is my rock goddess, and she's used her money to transform the Ramblin' Ranch into a two-story palace of "ooh, this is cool" moments followed by absolutely no reflection on whether this cool thing blends with the last cool thing. When I gave her son a Love Tub, which is much too schmaltzy-looking for his or his wife's established taste, I justified it as one of Ma's extravagant, over-the-top presents.
I recommend Frankie have the leopard-print undies and some of those topless long pjs that look so good on buff men. In his mind, he's still got a body that can show those off. For formal, there's a leopard-print smoking jacket. You may find some acceptably tacky everyday garments among the Maxis base game stuff that you normally never go all the way back to. You know what he'd love, if you can find it on a site that does retro fashions? A disco suit. With angel flights!
And don't forget to be liberal with those lawn flamingos when landscaping.

I have Nightlife, and I'm using some strange thing there. Not the Rave costumes, but something different. I'll recolor it, so it looks like Frankie's.
I finished Sylva Marie! I didn't like the track pants I had, so I gave her flames. She looks good....ish.

Frankie's personality points are given here under his description: http://thesims.neoseeker.com/wiki/The_Sims:_Livin'_Large
The photos are great! Don't forget to check the Sims Wikia for some scanty info on the Mashugas and pictures: http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Mashuga_family http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Frankie_Mashuga

OH MY GOLLY GOSH, I love these two (actually, when I was a youngling I didn't like them because their house was just so awful, lololol)!!! Thank you for reminding me of them! Ew their kitchen floor is a green carpet :S now that's just bad. And, bwhaha, their roof was so effed up XD
ffffff, seriously, I can't get over how much I love this couple. They basically just sum up everything that was wacky, crazy and wonderful about the Maxis decor. :lovestruc

I clicked around on one of the links smellincoffee gave above and found the Mashugas all TS2-fied, and I think he did a decent enough job without CC. Requires all EPs though to get them to look like the pics.

I can't verify how clean this dude's downloads are, so use the Clean Installer or something.

Here's my attempt to recreate Frankie Mashuga. http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/4/6/2/2/1/8/6/MTS_Ynouva-1244162-Untitled.jpg
I know the outfit doesn't look exactly like the TS1 version, but I do believe I captured his outfit's essence from the original. His outfit is a not-so-simple recolor of a mesh from Nightlife which had a neck scarf (I couldn't take it out, personally). He's not fat yet, but I'll gradually make him fat as he gets older.
Right now he and Sylvia are living in an apartment because I still haven't started making their 'tacky' house. But that's a good thing so that they'll earn money to buy their future dream home as I play with them there. They're still roomies, but I'll marry them off soon.
I'm still looking for a perfect hair and clothing mesh for Sylvia, so I won't be showing her to you guys until then...

:D I've never played the game (thinking about buying it for fun) but I think I got it pretty accurate. :) The only thing is I've made his pants too yellow (going to change that) and that sleeve is still purple. ¬_¬ I'm going to put them up for download at my LJ very soon. :3

Franks outfit turned out better than Sylvia Marie's so I decided to use a regular Maxis outfit for her instead of the one i re-colored. Frank now wears a golden scarf, not a gold necklace!

I didn't recreate their clothes -- especially since these are college-aged versions of them -- but I decided that Frankie and Sylvia Marie would be a welcome addition to the already strange town of Strangetown. They met in the cafeteria at La Fiesta Tech soon after registering for their classes, reached for the same grilled-cheese sandwich, and haven't left each other's side since. Frankie is planning on going into sports after graduation, while Sylvia Marie plans to earn her way as a grilled-cheese psychic ("First, eat this sandwich. Ah, thank you.... your fortune is as follows: you will meet a mysterious stranger. You will also get indigestion.").

I'm looking forward to when they graduate. I have a love of tacky decorating that is kept in check only by what I assume the tastes of my sims to be. I'm not sure if even I can decorate tacky enough to suit them :help:
