View Full Version : How do I make money with breeding and selling pets

Hellooo,
I had the Idea of making 2 very nice dogs (Japanese Akita inu's, since the American Akita was already in the game it was very easy, just had to recolor it realisticly). And than breed puppies to sell to my sim neighbours. But I only get the option to put them up for adoption for no cost at all. Realisticly an Akita inu pup for that breed will cost around 1100 euro's! So no way I'll give them up for free! How does one sell a puppy? I'm probably overlooking something in the game, that's why I need your help! :)
P.s. So I recolor a wonderful dog, and BOOM suddenly it is a mixed breed. What's up with that?

As far as I have found there is no way to sell cats and dogs, only horses (to the Equestrian Center).

*nods* I'm so disappointed by the lack of options. I positively adored "The Sims 2: Pets" expansion, and now I find we don't have wolves or the option to sell pets. *shakes head* Anyway, don't you worry, Bubblegum. I'm sure there will be mods allowing you to make money from breeding pets soon. :D

I also hope that this future mystery mod would also allow me to sell my pack of unicorns. :D
But yeah, the general lack of selling ability really bums me out. I have no clue why they imposed such unnecessary limits.

And the wolves. I miss the wolves. *shakes fist*

Hmm thanks, dang,, Now what am I supposed to do with those cute puppies? I can't keep em all, they're making my simmies tired :P Putting them up for adoption just seems wrong! Oh well we will just have to hang in there till the modding geniusses put something online! Anyways, thanks for my answer! ( How is it these days that I'm spending more time on modthesims reading blogs than actually playing.. Goshh, I need to get a job SOOON! :P)

You could save them to the bin for now, but yeah. I feel your pain. :P I kept my Sim's kittens because I just didn't want to give them away to non-caring NPC Sims like I did with a horse. They don't even ride the poor thing! Oh EAxis, what were you thinking again? Honestly, I yet have to see another riding horse but my own ...

I've seen people in Appaloosa Plains riding their horses around town. The sight of Honey Darnell riding around town in her lingerie has scarred me for life.
Does anyone know what happens to the pets you put up for adoption? Does anyone in town adopt them autonomously? Or do they sit in limbo forever? Or vanish?

"The sight of Honey Darnell riding around town in her lingerie has scarred me for life."
*laughs* I imagine! My Sim tends to do it, too. I hate Appaloosa Plains, though. Cinnamon Falls or whatever it's called has HORRIBLE routing. Those community lots are horrible, horrible, horrible. So I'm currently playing plain old Riverview, and it appears EAxis' game engine can't handle the addition of pets very well. :/
As for your question: I don't know, I can only say that those pets I'd put up for adoption vanished. Wish those NPCs adopted them but they didn't, and they went poof.

I agree. I should be able to sell my unicorn babies for like 10 times as much as a regular horse lol

gotta hope a mod come along to fix this soon. Sell pets for actual cash, but also I'd still like to see them wandering around the neighbourhood, and/or attached to new families as a member of the house.

I agree. We also need an option to turn a pet into a stray.

Rockerduck, whenever I see you posting in the Pets bit of the forum you are always complaining. Say something or don't say anything at all.

I haven't played dogs or puppies of any kind yet, but if you can get them to catch little animals for you, you could sell those and consider that as payment for your puppies.

Bit of a lurker here on the forums, but I just wanted to say dogs can be a gold mine. Its mostly luck and patience, but sometimes they can dig up Tiberium. Had both of mine dig up 3 in one day, granted I use relativity so really 2 days but still not bad. Rocks are rarer but gotten a few giant meteorites too.
My lot is too small to support a bunch of horses and I have the problem of getting attached. So my dogs are the real money makers. I don't have any cats yet oddly.
:Edit For storytellers though I can see the disappointment.

Putting them up for adoption is WRONG? As opposed to SELLING THEM?
PETA, here is someone for you. GET HER! :D

As I mentioned in another thread, I have briefly played a custom hood and thought I'd share what I learned about NPC's that have Pets up for adoption. Not the sim(s) you are playing, the sims in the houses with the Pets adoption icon over their house.
I was checking out some houses in Rflong's Winter Wonderland world because someone reported having some problems with some of the free EA content - the first Fall set and the first Christmas set - and these houses contained those items. It was an unpopulated hood so I would place sims from my bin (and redress them for winter - couldn't help it, they looked cold haha!), play a lot, then change households, place more sims from my bin, etc.
I placed about 3-4 households this way and on the second sim day, there was an icon over a family that I had placed the day before for a pet adoption. Sudddenly there was a white horse and two white foals up for adoption there. This lot had no barn or any way to care for horses, mind you. But the white horses did look awesome in the "snow". LOL
So I sent the current sim I was playing over to the lot and he adopted one of the foals, then of course I had to build a barn on his lot. Afterwards I switched households because I was going to go build a barn at the house that had the foals up for adoption. Funny thing was that as soon as I selected them, the horses disappeared and only the family was there. They were like phantom horses or something.
So some of those NPC households with Pets up for adoption are game generated. I just thought this was interested and thought I would pass it along. I guess my sim should have adopted both foals and then sold them at the Equestrian Center. :P

Yes, if you do switch households during a neighborhood adoption, the adoption disappears, even if you switch back.

So if you don't switch households, they don't disappear?

It'll disappear after some time whether you switch households or not, as will whatever pet the NPC household gained during the adoption. That is, assuming it's game-generated. I'm not sure how it works when it's the household's actual pet, or if they'll ever have adoptions with their actual pets at all.
edit - How were you able to switch to the household anyway? With a mod/cheat, I assume..? The option to do anything with a household (in edit town) disappears for me when the adoption scenario is running.

It'll time out eventually.
KaiRuh: Either AwesomeMod or I believe testingcheatsenabled will allow it as a shift-click fuction.

Selling pets is now possible thanks to the consigner mod from Twallan:

My crazy equestrian Sim keeps rolling power wants to adopt horses and I'm a sucker for her whining so I usually give in. The Fox family in Appaloosa Plains had some horses up for adoption. It seems they have a couple of horses and they had twin foals. So I adopted one and she moped around about missing her mother and had wants to sniff her parents and twin. Ages later, after she adjusted and grew up and whatever, I noticed her littermate is greyed out in the relationship panel. Like she just vanished instead of getting adopted. She doesn't seem to have grown up, either.
So neighbourhood Sims do put their own pets (or at least the offspring of) up for adoption but if you don't get everything, they just kind of go away forever. Lame.
I kept wanting to go look at what was available from a house that had dogs up for adoption, but the human was never home. No matter what time of day I tried, it was just the dog there so I couldn't ever see what they had up for adoption. It's the house in Appaloosa Plains with the handyman who is popular with the ladies, if that matters at all.

The pets they put up for adoption aren't offspring of theirs. They just spawn in the family and disappear when the adoption is over. If you check your foal, she isn't actually related to Bramble or Willow, the two Fox horses. Before the adoption starts they don't exist.

Yes, the pets that are available for adoption aren't actually part of the family. They quickly disappear if you switch to the family that has them up for adoption. Today I made the sim I was playing adopt from a sim I knew, had made and had played, when she got the kitten home it was not related to anyone other than her "litter mates", a time passed and the kittens for adoption disappeared, when I clicked on her relationship panel her previous litter mates were grayed out. :(

Bubblegum it's just not politically correct to be a pet breeder these days what with all the mutts and mongrels that are in need of homes so it makes me wonder if Pets is trying to reflect this mindset. Now never mind many people want certain pets that are impossible to find in shelters. Not everyone who adores dogs has room for a golden retriever mix, for example. We used to have large dogs but as I got older I started to want smaller ones because they're easier to take care of and less mess in the house. Just try to find a GOOD small dog at a shelter!
At any rate I'm digressing. I'm also using Twallan's mod for selling pets at the consignment shop. I just barely started playing Pets last night and today so have only sold spawnable pets there so far but my Sim is making a good living at it.
It was the funniest thing because I just got started playing last night before I had to go to bed then when I could today I started again. I played through several Sim days and by now it was time to turn off the game again. I was starting to believe that wild horses and stray dogs and cats were figments of the developer's imaginations. sent my Sim to do something when I noticed a foal standing in front of a house in town (I'm playing Simbody's Castle Canyon which is actually a perfect setting for this) so my Sim was talking to her when all of a sudden wild horses started running up the street! The Sim who had the foal up for adoption was nowhere to be found so my Sim hung around trying to convince the wild horses he really isn't such a bad guy after all (they never did believe him), petted and brushed the foal, and spent some time in a nearby hang-out. Finally the owner Sim came home (it was after 10 o'clock, for crying out loud) and my Sim adopted the foal. The poor little thing was tired and ready for sleep and I was wondering how it was going to get to my Sim's home. Would it ride in the taxi? Would a mysterious truck appear to give it a ride? Could it hitch a ride on the ice cream truck? So my Sim gets in the taxi cab to go home and there his little Daisy Horse is left all on her own! I decided to see if she could teleport with testing cheats and she could so at least she got home before she got so tired she couldn't stand up any more.
