View Full Version : Maximum Triangles / Vertices?

I have just started creating my first objects, due to a lack of Statuary and the like for my elitist/snob sims and have been quite sucessful with all working so far. But as I have been importing .3ds prefabs from the many free websites I worry that I might be overdoing it on the number of poly's when i scale them down.

This Lion Plinth (a combination of Sims 2 meshes) i have tested and is working but is 3000 vertices and 5000 triangles for a 2x1 footprint. Is that too much?
I have a few meshes ready for the new monthly theme but dont want to release them if they are to heavy on specs.
Thanks in advance.

The general rule of thumb is 1200 triangles per tile max. Of course you can go more than that (some objects have up to 5000 per tile).
If there is a lot of detail and it's clear where those polys are coming from I'd say it's fine. However; Using a tool to reduce the number of vertices, like Milkshape 3D's Directx tool, can be helpful in reducing that number while still having great detail.
As for being accepted, I feel it's always been at the discretion of the mod on when too much has been reached.

Thanks for the reply, I have used the Direct X plugin in Milkshape with some sucess, with a basic detail mask this mesh will look a treat. :)

Another consideration is the type of object it is. If it's an object people are likely to only place one of in a home, like a statue, a higher poly count is more acceptable for it than it would be for something like a dining chair where people may place many copies of it in a single home.

+ does the object animate or is it used in animation files?

As they said it's a statue where I would assume only a few would be placed. But that is important to consider.

No animation for this mesh, will be a while before I am that condfident lol, After extensive testing I havn't noticed any lag around the object, though the lot I use has 100's of plants on it.
