Ok, so heres the deal:

1. After finishing a house, I clicked Edit Town, and minimized the game to check Modthesims.com
2. After checking the site, I went to reopen my game, which would not reopen.
3. I opened Task Manager for Windows, which said it was Not Responding, and then terminated any processes not related to Google Chrome, Sims 3, or Windows, bringing down my CPU usage to 48%.
4. Still Not responding.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like it's frozen, and you're boned if you didn't save. Force quit through task manager.

Damn! I didn't, I was actually going to Edit Town to save and then upload and take pics.

Is there any other way?

Try to switch back to the game, wait indefinitely, eventually give up and force quit anyway? It may -eventually- start responding again, but often not.

This is almost always the way my game ends since the new patch even without me switching away from the screen...and if I'm lucky, I've saved recently.
I've tried waiting it out. It never comes back and most of the time if you try to wait it will disappear on it's own but by all means, try waiting first.
I find that dealing with frustration of losing your work/game is dealt with by turning away from it for a day or so before loading it back up and going through the motions again. Sorry this is happening to you.
