I can't say for sure, but you can have your Sim check the newspaper to see what classes are having a discount that day.

I'm not trying to be out of topic but, isn't the writing class only cost you like 400 simoleons? (like any other classes in The Sims 3):P it's bloody cheap tbh, even for new sims.
