View Full Version : Tutorial: Custom Eye Colours using Photoshop (Beyond just Recolouring)
deathoflight

I've gotten quite a few compliments on my custom eye colours, so I thought I would post a tutorial showing the technique I use.
Edit by Tiggerypum: If you have Paint Shop Pro - check out the instructions in this message in the thread: psp tips here (http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?p=1522124#post1522124)
You can get decent results by simply recolouring the Maxis default colours, but I find that I can get much more interesting and unique shades by starting from scratch. For this tutorial I will be assuming that you already know how to export and import files from Bodyshop. If you don't, there are numerous other tutorials that cover that same ground. I will also be assuming that you have a basic working knowledge of Photoshop. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
I used Photoshop CE for this tutorial, but from what I remember of earlier versions, it should work unless you're using a very old version of Photoshop.
I will admit that this looks like a LOT of steps, but once you have it down it only takes about two minutes total (Mere seconds if you save the steps as an Action.), and the results are worth it.
In Photoshop, create a new document, 96 pixels in height and 36 pixels in width.
Zoom in to about 400% so that you can see what you're doing.
Create a new layer, and delete the background to get rid of the locked background layer, if necessary.
If the colour chooser isn't open, go to Windows ---> Color to open it. Click on the swatches tab.
Pick a grouping of four similar colours, ranging from darkest to lightest. The further apart the colours are in shade, the more detail you will have in the finished eye.
Using the rectangular shape tool, fill the layer with the darkest colour. Switch to the next lightest colour, and make a rectangle vertically down the centre of the layer, leaving approximately five pixels of the first colour showing on either side.
Repeat this until you have used all four colours. The result should look something like this:
http://home.mchsi.com/~deathoflight/eyetut1.jpg
(Picture enlarged for sake of clarity.)
The important thing is to have the darkest colours on the outside, with the lightest colour in the centre. Otherwise this won't work.
Go to: Filter ---> Stylize ---> Wind
Set the Method to Wind and the Direction to From The Right. Click OK.
Do it again, only this time set the direction to the left.
Go to: Image ---> Adjustments ---> Invert
Repeat the wind filter from both the left and right directions.
Invert the image to get your original colours back.
It should now look something like this:
http://home.mchsi.com/~deathoflight/eyetut2.jpg
Using the rectangular marquee tool, select an area on the right side of the canvas approximately five pixels wide.
Go to: Select ---> Feather
Set the feather radius to 5 pixels and click OK.
Go to: Image ---> Adjustments ---> Brightness/Contrast
Turn the Brightness all the way down (Or whatever looks right for the colours you've chosen. Darker colours might only need the slider halfway down.) and click OK.
Repeat the previous steps on the left side of the canvas.
Go to: Image ---> Canvas Size
Change the canvas width to 48 pixels and set the anchor point to the centre right.
http://home.mchsi.com/~deathoflight/eyetut3.jpg
Using the Rectangle Shape tool, fill the transparent part of the canvas on the left with black. This will be the pupil.
Go to: Image ---> Canvas Size
Change the canvas width to 96 pixels and set the anchor point to the centre left.
http://home.mchsi.com/~deathoflight/eyetut4.jpg
Go to: Image ---> Rotate Canvas ---> 90 Degrees CW
IMPORTANT: Make sure you only have one layer! If there's more than one, Go to: Layer ---> Merge Visible
Go to: Filter ---> Distort ---> Polar Coordinates
Choose the Rectangular to Polar option and click OK.
You should now have a fairly decent looking eye.
http://home.mchsi.com/~deathoflight/eyetut5.jpg
http://home.mchsi.com/~deathoflight/eyetut6.jpg
(This pic actual size.)
To tweak it a bit, you might want to duplicate the layer, and change the blending mode. On lighter colours, Overlay works quite well, on darker colours Color Dodge will brighten it up. Just play around with it a bit and see what works best for the colours you've chosen. When you're done, merge the layers.
Now, one last step.
Go to: Filter ---> Render ---> Lens Flare
Position the flare somewhere in the upper right part of the iris, and play with the sliders until it looks how you want it.
And you're done. Just copy the eye, paste it into the file you exported from Bodyshop, and position over the original eye. It should fit exactly, if you have used the dimensions specified in this tutorial. Flatten the image and save.
By using different colours and experimenting with layer styles, you can get many different results.
Advanced users: It's well worth the time to save the steps as an Action. Then you can make a dozen or so colour bar sets, run an automated batch, and just pick the ones that look especially nice for further editing.
EDIT 7/20/05: Check out post #14 in this thread for some interesting variations!

That's very kind of you. Okay I tried to make one of those eyes but how to you delete the background layer? Because when I "wind" it, it comes transparent. (All I've ever done on Photoshop was recolour)

One thing I might add...
Once you apply all the wind steps, and do the brightness/contrast to darken the edges, I then go back and select both edges the same way like for the brightness/contrast step, but with a feather of 7...
Then do hue-saturation on each side and give it a little bit of a tint. For example, I just made my own eyes for my self-sim, and the main colours I picked are a golden brown/green, but for the right side tint I made it a little turquoise (as my eyes are edged in a little ring of a more bluish hue) and for the left (center) a little more golden/green. Then do the rest of the steps as normal and it creates a -very- realistic-looking eye.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/HystericalParoxysm/sims2/eye1.jpg
This second one was created with variations in grey/green to slightly yellow/orange, and then the inside tinted with a yellow/orange.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v304/HystericalParoxysm/sims2/eye2.jpg
Anyway... I LOVE this tutorial, and I hope this one little bit will be helpful for others. Thanks much! I'm having so much fun with this!

The only step I couldn't get to work in PaintShopPro so far is that with the wind. It doesn't look that "streaky" when I apply it in PSP. Anyone got any ideas? I also cannot figure out how to invert the image ... :( Otherwise, yes, you can do it in PSP as well.
I've played in PhotoShop with the Glass settings, and got some nice results also with the Filter -> Distortion -> Glass -> Artistic -> Plastic Wrap and fiddle around with the settings. Just a suggestion.
After all: great tut! :D Thanks for posting. Without it, I'd probably never figured out how to do custom eyes from scratch.
Addendum: I just figured out how to do all steps in PSP as well, so, yes, you can transfer the steps and do the tut in PSP, and ought to get the same results. :D

I was wondering if anyone knows how to change Maxis default eyes into custom eyes from an existing sim in the game. I've created an entire neighbourhood that consists only of Sim Cribbling skin tones and eye colours but I accidently made a mistake and made a father with Maxis default eyes, so the baby is the odd one out. arg. No. MSPaint doesnt have all the features needed. Get The Gimp @ Gimp.org

Hello StarRanger4:
I tried it with Gimp (2.0) a few hours ago, as I only use Gimp for skinning, and the easiest way to position the swatch is doing it directly in the dialogue that opens when you click "canvas resize" (i use the German version of Gimp, so I am not sure how it is called in the English version).
As soon as you change the size by entering the values, you can already move the swatch in the preview window and it will also show the value of the movement, so if you see it has been moved to the right by 12 pixels, you know it is correct.
I hope that my description was helpful...
By the way: Great, great, great tutorial, and I am very glad it worked with Gimp, otherwise I would have been very sad :-).

20th Dec 2005, 02:31 PM
Oh, I forgot to ask a question - I hope some of the Gimp users may have the answer: Where do you find the step that is called Marquee, the thing with the feather respectively what is meant by that? This might be a problem of using a German program, but perhaps someone knows the answer nonetheless...

For anyone using PSP 8, this may work for 7/9/X as well, instead of wind go to Effects >> Distortion >> Wave and make your settings as follows.

It won't look exactly the same, but it does the job. You could also play around with the settings to get different effects. :giggler:

Well, I just had to try it, though I've done eyes that I've liked without the tut. I've included a picture of the eyes I've done. That first two are from this tut, the other 13 are ones I've done before. Of course, none of them are supposed to look realistic. I think they're all pretty. The ones from the tut weren't really easier for me than how I was doing them before, but I'm pretty comfortable with the Gimp. You've done a nice job with the tut and it's easy to follow, even though The Gimp doesn't have exactly the same filters and such.

No problem, just do a layer->flatten image before you polarize. Make sure you dont have anything selected when polarizing too. Hope that helps!

How would you make actions? I want to do it fast. Plz help.
If you're on Photoshop, go to Window>Show Actions. Then on there, press the "Create New Action" button which looks like a page. You'll be brought up with a pop-up. Name your action and press "Record." Then there should be a red dot on the "Actions" panel which means that it's recording all your actions. Do whatever you have to do, but becareful not to mess up. If you do mess up, press the "Stop" button (the square) immediately and drag that action to the trash can. Then press the "Record" button again (the dot and it should turn red) and continue with your work. For some reason, though, I can't record anything that I did with the brush, so I'd recommend having two seperate actions. One for before coloring the pupil and one for after coloring the pupil.
Hoped that helped.

a very basic version of photoshop-- Elements can be bought for about $30 (USD) at any computer/electronics store (CompUSA, Frys, ect)
You may also download a trial version if you just want it for a short period of time. I would recommend trailing Elements and not an advanced version if you've never used photoshop before.

What is the equivalent of Lens Flare in GIMP? My eyes don't look right without the flare, but it looks VERY nice so far
I really havent found a lens flare option in GIMP similar to the one in photoshop, but what i had always used for this tutorial was go to filter>lighting effects (might not be the right name, i talk spanish so my program is in spanish) which is the next option below distortion effects.
In the lighting efects there should be something like... FX Burst? not sure but i use that sometimes. I like better the last option of them: supernova. Choose supernova and select the radium to 2 and rays(?) to something about 30-50 and select where to place it. I usually put 2 supernova flares and get a good effect (though i no longer use this kind of reflections):

i got it to work in psp x. if you have questions pm me and i will walk you through it :)
i've included an image to show my results :)
for the wind part use this:
effects>>texture effects>>fur
blur-46
density-50
length-100
transparency-30
there is a polar coordinates under:
effects>>distortion effects
I omitted this completely:
Go to: Image ---> Adjustments ---> Invert
and when you come to this..go to:
image>>rotate right
and for the light in the upper right of the pupil use:
effects>>artistic effects>>balls and bubbles and use the single ball..then drag the box in the preview to suit your taste. if i left something out..let me know. hope i helped.
Now the for the green eye, I used the plugin dsb flux>>blast instead of the fur. but then I realized alot of people don't have that plugin so I made another with the fur. The green looks better though so if you have PSP, download off of this page. Scroll down and look for DSB Flux

This was the first tutorial that I've read that I've actually been able to understand what the creator was telling me to do! Thanks so much for making it is to read for dorks like me! :) I've managed to make my first eyes...actually my first ANYTHING for my game...and I'm so excited about that!
My first question is, if I save my eyes in the default folder that I imported from the game and then upload it into the game, are my new eyes going to overwrite my default eyes? Because I don't really want to lose the eyes I already have, plus that would limit how many eyes I can create for my game if I would keep writing over them.
And my second question is, how to I create the tiny square icon that shows what color the eye is going to be before you select it?
tiggerypum
21st Jan 2007, 01:43 AM
Your new eyes will not replace anything in your game, to make default replacements requires extra very deliberate steps.
The square graphic I believe is in 'swatch.bmp' When you're doing your project, see if that appears in your project folder. (I know it does for skin recolors, I assume it might for others) Make a pretty graphic and replace the swatch.bmp file (be sure to use the same pixel size as the original swatch.bmp uses)

Thanks so much for the quick reply. I've been driving my husband nuts wanting to make more eyes. It's good to know that I won't be able to delete my defaults by accident so I can make all the eyes I want...which I will since it's all I know how to make so far. I've got to check out some more tutorials, this is just sad haha.
I thought the icon picture might be the swatch, but I've used both the default green and brown eyes and they both show the same rainbow colored picture for the swatch, which obviously isn't what shows in the game. Is this how it appears for skin graphics too?
Simguy182
21st Jan 2007, 04:31 PM
The swatch always appears as a rainbowed square for both skintones and eyes. All you need to do is edit it at your own will, keeping the same size and all, then refresh and the rainbow square should be replaced with your new small graphic.
tiggerypum
22nd Jan 2007, 06:46 AM
You have to replace the swatch graphic yourself, just like you replaced the eye graphic. It's not automatic.

I have just got started into doing custom content and found everything so mind boggling! After spending half day getting used to Photoshop (which I found a real challenge) and using your excellent tutorial (the pictures really helped) I have made my first 'real' custom eyes. I think I've got the hang of this!:) I have made several really cool eyes using this tut... I can now skip steps, and add my own... to make the eyes look how I want.:) I add motion blur afterwards (first at the angle of 0, then 180.) It makes it look a bit smoother. I also sharpen it a bit.
*edit* Runesinger, I don't worry about the black part myself. I skip that step entirely, do the last step so that there is space around the eye, and then take a round brush and put the pupil in. *lol* But that's becuse I can't figure out that step in Gimp.

What I do in Gimp to get the black is to make a second layer, make it black, cut out the part covering the colour and voila! That part is done. However, I can't find feather in GIMP, and shift doesn't quite work as nicely. As its' late for me, I'm going to head off to sleep and play with it more in the morning, but if anyone knows where feather is located?
I love gimp, its a great little program, but sometimes it still boggles me, even after all these years.
Nevermind - I found it - it wasn't where I was looking.

Hm, this seems much easier than what I was doing b4. The only problem I keep running into is when I'm done creating the eye & hit refresh in BodyShop, it comes up looking a little muted. If I go ahead & import it back to the game, the entire eye comes up looking like a single-colored 'smudge' (the best explanation i have); the iris, pupil everything is the middle-hue of the eye color I was going for. No matter which coloring method I've tried, this always happens, so I know it's something wrong I'm doing somewhere along the line. Can anyone help?
btw: using Photoshop CS to edit on a Mac Powerbook G4, if that makes a difference.

I'm very new to this creating thing, and following your excellent instructions, created my first eye. It was too small however, but I simply changed the pixels using a formula (it appeared that it was too small by about 1/3) that made it fit perfectly. Thank you so much for taking the time to share! :gjob:

Umm.... I am trying to make the custom eye, but it only does the wind on the center layer. I am using Adobe Photoshop CS, and all it does is use wind on the center layer. And then when I invert, it still does the same thing, but when I try to get my colors back, it turns the inverted color all white, and it only does that on the center part. What am I doing wrong?

Your tutorial is fantastic, I tried it on my laptop quick just for amusement and it was not only easy but also fun.
However, as soon as I start to make real eyes for my sims (on my other computer that actually has Sims 2 and Bodyshop on it), I would like to know how to "save steps to an Action" as you referenced at the beginning of the tutorial. As I am still not very good at this (my version of photoshop is slightly newer so some of the actions were a bit different) and I take awhile to go through all of the steps, I was wondering if you knew of a good site that tells me how to do this "saving to an Action" process, because I checked Adobe's online help center to no avail. That would be much appreciated!
Thanks again for the wonderful and helpful tutorial!

Perhaps try fiddling with the Brightness/Contrast? usually works for me. Surprisingly, Blue can be an awkward color sometimes lol. i've jsut done a blue eye and it took me a while to make the right color, I needed a bright one as well.
Attached is the second eye i made using this tut, I forgot to save the first one. This is the blue I needed.

That is so cool! I don't have photoshop CE but I have photoshop elements 7 and I was able to do it! The only problem was that some of he things like 90 degrees CW was 90 degrees right for me so I'll give you the rest of the differences so others can figure it out too:
Image ---> Adjustments ---> Invert is found by doing Filter --> Adjustments --> Invert
Image ---> Adjustments ---> Brightness/Contrast is found by doing Layer--> New adjustment layer --> Brightness/Contrast
Image ---> Canvas Size --> is found Image--> Resize --> Canvas Size
Image ---> Rotate Canvas ---> 90 Degrees CW is Image --> Rotate --> 90 Degrees Right
Hope this helps! and thanks for showing me how to do this!

I mean I can always copy a slice of eye and paste it (tried that, it works ok), but I'd really not have to do an extra step every time I make an eye!
