Changelog

1.0.1 -- Aug. 2 2016
  • Fixed an issue that caused sims to reset when making Condensed Milk with milk from EA's Milkin' It Dairy Corral in games where Cinderellimouse's ingredients mod was not installed. "Make Condensed Milk" should now work even when only the Dairy Corral is installed.
  • Removed reference to non-implemented scone texture.
*******
Description

The Canning Station Overhaul introduces new features to Grandma's Canning Station from the Sims 3 Store. It also fixes a number of existing bugs in the item.

Fixes for Existing EA Bugs

  1. Fixed a bug whereby jams/preserves were corrupted by sims vacationing with them in the inventory, by moving a lot/sim with them through Edit Town's clipboard, by saving a lot/sim with them to the Library--in essence, any action involving import/export. The corrupted jams and preserves lost their thumbnails and tooltips, and caused sims to reset while running the "Eat with Scones" interaction. Sims with corrupted jams/preserves in their inventory could not perform social interactions with other sims in their household. Additional documentation of this bug can be found here and here.
  2. "Open Jar" interaction is now enabled for children.
  3. Inventory thumbnails of jars now show the jar lid.
  4. Jars from the canning station can now be rotated and placed on most wall shelves. Discussion of the placement issue can be found here.
  5. Fixed a bug whereby the "Eat with Toast" interaction was not available unless the Baker's Station was installed.
  6. Fixed canning station decorative slots so that they can accept more types of objects and are no longer rotated backwards.

New Features

  1. All toasts and scones made with default EA jams now look like they're spread with a variety of different jams. Unmodded, all toasts and scones use the same reddish-purple jam texture, regardless of the actual jam consumed.

  2. Twelve custom spreads can now be made using ingredients that were previously not accepted by the canning station. They can be eaten with toast only. Each custom spread results in a different custom toast (see toast screenshots above).

    IngredientCustom SpreadIngredientCustom Spread
    Milk*Condensed MilkLobsterInstant Shrimp Toast
    EggplantBaba GhanoushHoneyHoney Spread
    Ghost ChiliHot Pepper JellyEggScrambled Eggs
    CinnamonCinnamon SpreadSteakCretonnade
    BasilPestoSalmonSmoked Salmon Spread
    GarlicGarlic ConfitCheeseCheese Spread
*Milk can be obtained from Cinderellimouse's Cooking and Ingredients Overhaul or EA's Milkin' It Dairy Corral (from the Dairy Corral, this mod accepts only the plain milk.)

  3. "Make Rations" is a new interaction that cans a meal, storing it in a jar to delay spoilage indefinitely.
    • This interaction is enabled once 3 meals have been added to the canning station's inventory.
      • These can be a mix of any 3 types of meals, any number of servings, any quality.
      • Most meals in the game can be made into rations (see the Warnings section for custom foods and known incompatible foods.)
      • Ration-making increases Fun slightly.

    • Ration jars have an "Open Jar" interaction, which respawns the meal into the sim's inventory in the same state as it was when put into the canning station, with the same number of servings and quality.
    • Ration jars containing a meal with only a single serving have an additional "Open Jar and Eat" interaction. This spawns the meal into the sim's hand and pushes them to eat. This is an autonomous interaction for sims who are hungry and have access to single-serving ration jars (in the environment or their inventory.)
      • Vampire sims will not autonomously "Open Jar and Eat" from rations jars whose meals do not contain plasma fruit as an ingredient. The player can still direct them to do so, however.

    • Both "Open Jar" and "Open Jar and Eat" are enabled for children, except when the ration jar contains a meal that is tagged "adult-only" by EA (i.e. mac-and-cheese, autumn salad, waffles)--in this case, only "Open Jar" is enabled for minors.
    • Seventy meals have individualized ration jar textures. All other meals have ration jars that sport a custom generic texture with a silver lid, labelled "FOOD".

  4. Double-Boiled Ginseng Broth is a new recipe made by adding 3 ginseng ingredients to the canning station's inventory.
    • Sims get the "Warm Fuzzies" moodlet after eating the broth.
    • The "Germy" moodlet is removed by the broth if present.

  5. Jars of flame fruit preserves now glow.

  6. Make candles by adding 3 beeswax ingredients to the canning station's inventory. Click on the resulting jars to "unmold" the candle.
    • This candle uses the mesh from the basegame Mood-Lite candle, but is CAStable with 2 channels and 3 presets, and has a transparent glass base.
    • It's not a default replacement.
    • It's not buyable via the catalog, but can be sold for 85 simoleons.

  7. A "Put in Inventory" interaction has been added to all canning station jars so that they can be moved to the inventory without being opened first.

  8. Eighteen new decorative slots have been added to the canning station. (When drag-and-dropping ingredients into the canning station, some ingredients might be placed onto a decorative slot instead of being added to the canning station's inventory. If this occurs, open the canning station's inventory first, then drag the ingredients directly into the inventory panel.)

  9. Minor Tweaks:
    • Making preserves now increases Cooking skill by 300 instead of 800 (because making preserves should not build Cooking skill faster than cooking a meal.)
    • Making jams now increases Cooking skill by 400 instead of 800 (see above.)

Installation

If Grandma's Canning Station was installed via the Launcher as a .sims3pack: unpack mod as usual into Mods/Packages folder.

If Grandma's Canning Station was installed as a .package: unpack mod into Mods/Overrides folder.

If StoreFix_Decrap_Fixes.package is present in Mods/Packages or Mods/Overrides: the canning jar slot placement and rotation bugfix from this mod will not work because its canningJarJam OBJD is overridden by the one in StoreFix_Decrap_Fixes.package. This is easily remedied by firing up S3PE and setting the SlotPlacementFlags to Small, Decorative, and FullRotation in the OBJD in StoreFix_Decrap_Fixes.package.

Uninstalling this mod will break the custom objects it creates, such as the ration jars, custom spreads, unopened candle jars, Double-Boiled Ginseng Broth jars, and the custom CAStable candle. Sims who are opening ration jars autonomously might also be affected. It's likely best to delete the objects generated by this mod prior to uninstalling, and to run NRaas ErrorTrap when loading the savegame for the first time after the uninstall.

Requirements

  • This mod was built on patch 1.67, tested mostly on patch 1.67 and partially on patch 1.69.
  • Grandma's Canning Station must be installed (as a standalone or part of the Old Mill venue.)
  • Non-basegame ingredients and recipes require their respective expansion packs or Sims 3 Store content, but they are not absolute requirements for the mod itself.

  • Snacks (e.g microwave/fridge quick meals) cannot made into rations. The only exception is microwave Ramen (from the University EP) which is explicitly handled by "Make Rations".
  • Delivery pizzas cannot be used to make rations. Pizzas from the Wood Fire Oven are OK.
  • Individual cake slices can be made into rations, but not whole birthday or wedding cakes.
  • At least some custom foods can be made into rations, but this mod does not support them explicitly. Testers have successfully made rations from some of the following custom foods:
  • Meals with added herbs will lose the misty "herb added" visual effect as soon as they're dragged into the canning station. The effect will not return when these ration jars are opened, but sims will still get the moodlet associated with the herb when eating the opened ration. The loss of herb effects appears to be due to how inventories are implemented by EA (if anyone knows more about this, please contact me.) Flame fruit effects are persisted, however.
  • Toasts made from this mod's herb-based custom spreads (i.e. Cinnamon Spread and Pesto) will give the appropriate herb-specific moodlets when eaten. The misty "herb added" visual effect has been disabled by design in this case, since it looks misplaced when the toast is lifted away from the plate while eating, due to the effect being associated to the plate rather than the toast.
  • Uninstalling expansion packs, Store content, or mods whose ingredients or recipes have been used to make rations or custom spreads will break the affected jars. Testing suggests that these jars will become functional again once the relevant EPs/mods/Store content are reinstalled, but such an uninstall is not recommended.

Terms of Use

  • Do not re-upload elsewhere or include with lots.
  • Do not use custom assets or code in this mod for derivative works, including conversion to other Sims games, or extraction/recategorization of custom objects to make them buyable from the catalogue.

It's really neat how you use cookie jars in the game!

Interesting... I just tested buying/selling custom spreads with Ani's Produce Stand and cannot replicate what you described. The honey spread remains and functions as honey spread when it's bought by NPCs autonomously or when the active sim buys it from a stand owned by an NPC. There's nothing inherent to the jam jars (including custom ones like honey spread) that prevents them from keeping all their attributes when transferred between sims or households. For example, canning station jars continue to function properly when given as gifts.

The only thing I can think of is if the EP/modded ingredient/store content that was used initially to make the spread has been uninstalled--that would either make the jam jar revert to the default EA jam or render it non-functional altogether.

I enjoy Bohemian Garden a lot too! Unlike in real life, I really like gardening in the game (no insects and sweating), so some of my favourite items are the composting station and the greenhouse (all the glass looks so cool). Randomly hannging out next to the ocean is also something I like a great deal, as it's rather relaxing.

I don't use the produce stand, I use Ani's savvy seller. I put down a special stand, Ani's cash register and put the jars and candles directly on the stand, the jars / candles are swiped out when bought and a small price tag remains. Here's a pic:
You can see my bee family sim selling her husband wares. The thing is that I only sold 3 kind of items: finished candles, candles in a jar and jars of honey. So imagine my surprise when I discovered a family with jars of jams in their inventory. The candles and candles in a jar are fine though, they even had retained their (bad) quality.
Edit: err I'm unable to attach second pic of the jars changed in basic jam, will retry later lol

Sorry for the misunderstanding; you wrote "thanks to the ani's stands" so I assumed the Ani's Produce Stand was at issue.

Savvier Seller doesn't fully support canning station jars at this time, even the unmodded EA ones. It is not a bug with the Canning Station Overhaul itself.

Also, it might be useful to double-check that restock is indeed disabled for the table in your screenshot. The "small price tag" is a placeholder object used for restocking, and usually doesn't appear if restock is disabled, if I recall correctly from playing with Savvier Seller several months ago.

yes restock is disabled, those price tags are still generated; hmm I remember the settings are a bit misleading, will try the other settings for the restock.
I was just in my game and sent one of my actual rotation family sim to a home with those bought jars and 'stole' one; back at home the jar color is the basic red jam - yet the hover text says 'honey' and when spread it's the red jelly!
Ah okay, it's odd that the produce stand manages to retain those informations but not the savvy seller. I love my stands as they are and love seeing them being emptied in a couple of hours, the produce stand have no visuals Maybe if I have a real farmer sim I'll have enough stock for spares to decorate the produce stand then I'll use them.
Thank you for the explanation though <3
Edit: FYI I just sent a sim sell a couple of knick-knacks on the savvy stand and both settings generate the price tags, whatever..

MiniMimi: Thank you for letting me know. I will have to wait until I get and install the rest of the expansion and stuff packs (I have the base game, World Adventures, and High-End Loft Stuff) to see if I need to reinstall the Bohemian Garden Set and the other two sets or not. If I need to, I will uninstall and reinstall them. I also like what you do with the cookie jars in the game.

Butterbot: I agree: gardening in real life can be long and hard (my yard is really big, and it takes three hours to mow and weedeat it). But gardening in The Sims 3 is fun. I also like having my sims go to the beach or to museums (my game has art, history, science, natural history, and gem museums, so they have plenty of museums to choose from when they want to go to the museum). I like having them do other stuff, too, like go on vacation.

Or maybe I didn't remember correctly--Savvier Seller's settings can be really confusing sometimes...

It looks like the canning station jar correctly kept its "honey" attribute, but somehow the incorrect textures are associated with the jar and the resulting toast after going through Savvier Seller. Can you try clearing the game's caches to force the game to regenerate them and replace potentially outdated textures? If you can report back the results (whether the purchased jars now show the correct textures--note that you might have to buy some new jars of honey to see the change), that would be really helpful. Here's how to delete the caches (assuming you're on Windows):

If you're playing in Sunset Valley:
1. Go to "\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3" folder.
2. Delete compositorCache.
3. Close the folder and start the game.

If you're playing in a world other than Sunset Valley:
1. Go to "\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\WorldCaches" folder.
2. Delete "Name of the world you're playing".objectcache.
3. Close the folder and start the game.

Not sure this will work, but it's simple to do and worth a try.

Also, three questions:
1. Which version of the Savvier Seller is running in your game?
2. Were the problematic honey jars purchased autonomously by NPCs or by active sims you were controlling?
3. Is the game running in a non-standard environment, such as a virtual machine?

Thanks!

I’m playing in Sunset valley, deleted its world caches; needed to refresh a bit anyway.
1. It’s the V5, grabbed it at Nrass. Doesn’t seem to have an update.
2. The problematic jars were bought autonomously by inactive sims while I was selling them with Bessie Clavell using a savvy stand. I don’t know how to set it up otherwise yet, I’m still trying out the different mods
3. Plain Windows 7 64 bits. My game is heavily modded: Awesomemod since dawn of time, maintenance mods from Nrass like overwatch, Master controller, Error trap. A gazillion of small fixes and a truckload of mods and CC. No Story progression mod since I rotate.
Back from testing after deleting the caches. Just to be sure I went in and stole another of those bought jars, it turned into normal jam even though the jar hover text clearly stated it’s honey of perfect quality. Then I changed to the Clavell family, made a fresh batch of jars of honey and sold them using the savvy stand in town. Wrote down the name of those of bought them and changed to them when the sales was over. Those who hadn't eaten it yet had a yellow jar in their inventory stating it honey of perfect quality but all transformed to normal red jam when using it.
It’s sad but I may have to use the ani’s produce stand to sell any canned jars and keep the savvy stands to sell the rest. Next step in test will be for next generation sims: a farmer with the store dairy coral set selling bottles of milk (thanks to cinderelli’s mod) and jars of condensed milk. And another sim who will make jams of various fruits and veg he'll grow in his garden! :P

@MiniMimi

Thanks for the detailed reply and for trying out the cache deletion.

This is rather interesting as my setup is broadly similar to yours, aside from the smaller CC/mods, with one significant difference: I don't have Awesomemod.

In my game, when the active sim buys a jam jar via Savvier Seller, the jam functions normally, as expected. When an NPC autonomously purchases a jar via Savvier Seller, the seller household gets credited the price of the jar, but the NPC doesn't actually get it in their inventory. I suspect this is due to the lack of support for canning station jars in Savvier Seller. So I'm very intrigued that the NPCs in your game actually have the purchased jars in their inventories, albeit in an altered form; I wonder if Awesomemod has got something to do with this, seeing that it's a core mod and works in mysterious ways...

Well, at least the Produce Stand seems to sell jam jars properly, so there is a way for everyone to enjoy toasts + scones in town.

Given the retail mods available at this time, there seems to be two approaches:

a) If you primarily want to sell canning station jars for income, enjoy the more realistic shopping experience in Savvier Seller, and don't mind that the NPCs wouldn't have proper jam jars: use Savvier Seller.
b) If you prefer the canning station jars to be owned and potentially used by NPCs after purchase, and don't mind foregoing the shopping experience offered by Savvier Seller: use Produce Stand.

These are only suggestions, of course, as I do not claim to support third-party mods.

Hope this helps!

Ha! Yes maybe it's Awesomemod's doing: one of its features is to protect the NPCs' inventories (& the household fridges) which are constantly destroyed in a vanilla game (and filled with random crap!).
Yup, for any canning stations jars I'll be using the produce mod and I'll keep using the savvy stands for the rest; it's indeed the best way to do it Your special recipes are so neat it would be a shame to have them revert to that boring red jam! <3

Thanks for the kind words!

The white shelves are by Lisen801: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=478549

For use in these screenshots, I've modded them to have more slots (so that they can hold more than 3 objects) and to be moveable up the wall at a greater height (the original version cannot be shifted more than about 3/4th of the the way up). I did not seek permission from Lisen801 prior to making these customizations as they were intended strictly for my own use, so I cannot share the modified shelves at present.

That said, the original version of these shelves is still very useful, not to mention good-looking, and would likely be a great fit for your cellar as well.

I've had my sims make food preserves in my Deery Meadows legacy and they had preserves of meals for the winter though it wasn't used until spring when their ingredients ran out and their leftovers got eaten. This Mod saved my sims from starving to death and will help save lives in Storybrook County where I'm playing a 100 baby challenge set in the 16th century.Winter is about to arrive there and they need food preserves to keep the from starving in the spring.

Default Candy Bars!
So I placed some cocoa in to the canning station, selected "Make Preserves" and then went to the jars in my sim's inventory and saw they were labeled "Chocolate" I decided to open them expecting to just get cocoa but instead I got a candy bar! Yes, an actual edible candy bar. I'm not sure if this is a feature of the mod or the original canning station itself but I saw nothing about it in any of the descriptions. I thought it was pretty cool and had to share in case others didn't know you could do this.

Apologies if you have answered this before. Do you have a tutorial or reference you could point to for adding to this mod. I am marginally familiar with xml mods having done a small amount for another game. I only recently purchased S3, and have not yet tried creating mods. I have all the current CCLoader custom food mods installed and would love to be able to make use of some the food ingredients therein with this mod. Here are some examples of what I am thinking:

Strawberry - Obviously Jam
Bell Pepper - Rename Preserved Bell Pepper to Pickled Pepper
Chick Pea - Hummus
Colossal Olive - Tapenade
Corn - Cream Corn
Corn - Preserved
Black Beans - Refried Beans
Asparagus - Either Preserved or Pickled, probably pickled

@edwardgr

Scripting changes would be required to add ingredients; editing the XML alone is not sufficient. There's no tutorial specific to adding ingredients to this mod, as EA's design does not make this possible without decompiling the .dll and editing the canning station's code. There are a number of scripting tutorials on MTS that cover that topic better than I can, if you're so inclined.

Also, by default, the canning station can make strawberry jam if Bohemian Fruit and Nuts from the Store is installed. The canning station itself came with harvestable corn and cucumbers, so preserved corn should already be available as well.

Hope this helps.
