I was asked by Gwens So HOT how to connect a garage to a house on a foundation, so I decided to do a tutorial on this subject!
I use a Tutorial I read ages ago, but I just cant remember the persons name...they were from sims2.com, so I apologise for not knowing their name. I have modified the tutorial to an easier way..I hope :)

1) Work out your houseplan & where you are going to put your garage. Then place the first piece of driveway (the piece that connects to the road). Then place an extension piece behind this. I am using a darker color for this exercise.

2) Without placing any walls, place any of the garage doors. This is just to mark where the front wall of the garage will be. Now delete the door, and you should be left with a wall. Leave the wall where it is.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/1A.jpg

3) Click on top down view so we can see exactly what we are doing next. We want to leave more room around the garage extension piece, so sims won't get 'stuck' & so we can place stairs leading up to the internal access from the garage. So choose a floor tile, (you may match your garage extension piece if you wish) place at least one row along the sides of the extension and place at least 2 tiles wide at the back of the driveway extension.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/1.jpg

4) You may now lay your foundation for your house, bringing this up to the edge of the tiles you just placed. Place the walls all around this,(your house!) there is no need to place inner walls yet if you dont wish to, but by all means do so if you want. Don't connect any garage walls to the foundation yet!!! We need to activate a cheat.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/2.jpg
Hold down Ctrl and Shift and c at the same time to get your cheat console up, then type in these words exactly boolprop constrainfloorelevation false.
False activates the cheat and True deactivates the cheat, so type false for this time.

5) Starting from a garage front wall, place a wall very carefully and join it to part of the house foundation. Now repeat this on the other side of garage. These walls are all warped now. We will fix this now!
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/3.jpg

6) Still with the cheat on choose a bright floor tile & place a few of these on the outside of the front corners of garage.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/3B.jpg
These are just guides and will be deleted later. Choose the top down view again, then go down so you can see the top of the house foundation (in other words, where you will place carpet etc later). Take the level terrain tool & place this somewhere inside the house on a level piece of foundation, then drag diagonally towards the guide floortiles you just placed.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/4.jpg

7) Deactivate the cheat by typing in your cheat console boolprop constrainfloorelevation true. Go to normal view Take the wall tool & place another wall directly on top of the compressed wall of your garage. The compressed wall of your garage acts as a foundation.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/4B.jpg
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/5.jpg
Almost finished!!
8) Go down to the lowest level of your garage & with your wall tool hold down Ctrl and drag to delete 5 tiles of wall in the front of garage. Now you should have a small space underneath the real wall of the front of garage!
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/6.jpg
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/6B.jpg

9) Now activate the cheat again by typing boolprop constrainfloorelevation false, take your wall tool again and still at the lowest level of your garage, replace the 5 tiles of wall that you just deleted. Once again there are warped walls but this time they are at the front of garage.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/6C.jpg

10) Go to the very top level of your garage and grab the same bright tile used before as guides. Turn your view around so you can see inside the front of the warped garage wall, just like in the shot below.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/7.jpg
Place one tile....
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/7B.jpg
then another....
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/7C.jpg
untill all the warped wall has gone.
Now deactivate the cheat by typing in the cheat console....boolprop constrainfloorelevation true.

11) With that bright floor tile selected, press Ctrl & Shift and click with your mouse to delete all of these. This is the best method for deleting these, as the first ones you placed earlier..... get ahhhhhh really warped and are hard to delete like that.

12) Place your choice of garage door.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/8.jpg
Place a square of foundation at the back of garage, (assuming this is where you want your access door)
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/9.jpg
then a set of connecting stairs,
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/9B.jpg
then a door so your sims can gain access to inside the house from the garage

13) When placing wallcoverings for the outside of home, patterned ones dont look very good with the outside of parts of your garage,
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/10.jpg
so a plain wallcovering like paint or stucco is best.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/11.jpg
But you can still decorate the outside of the rest of your home with whatever you wish.
http://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l45/fletcher_mirage/Tutorials/Garage%202%20House%20on%20Found/12.jpg

Well I hope this tutorial was helpfull and not too long winded :)

Any questions, please ask

fev

PS I apologise for the poor picture quality in these shots! Everything was perfect, but after posting on an image hosting site and placing pics from there to MTS2, something has gone awry!!! :(

Every time I try to connect the walls to the foundation, it says "covered by floor tile." What the heck? lmao.. Any help?

Have you activated the cheat First before trying to connect the garage walls to the house?
press CTRL and SHIFT and C at the same time, then type exactly these words in the cheat console...boolprop constrainfloorelevation false.
No no punctuation marks or anything! False turns ON the cheat (activates), True turnes OFF the cheat (deactivates)
Try this again, and if you are still having problems, let me know, and maybee post some shots of what you have created and a shot of the problem.

hope this helps

Hello,

I do realise the last comment here was 2 months ago. However, I am reluctant to start a new thread just to say the pictures on this one are entirely invisible.

:new:

I hope that you all know that there is a much easier way of doing this.

1) Create the outline of the whole entire house, including the area you want as the garage.

2) Build a second floor with the walls matching up completly (in otherwords put walls on top of all the other walls, including those of the garage)

3) Turn on the cheat "boolprop constrainfloorelevation false" (without the quotation marks) into the cheat box. To open the cheat box, press the ctrl, shift, and C buttons in that order (make sure you hold them down. In otherwords, press ctrl, hold down, press shift, hold down, press c, hold down, then release)

4) Drag the foundation where you want it to be in the house. Do not put it over the area you have selected as the garage! You may want two tiles of foundation leading into the garage area, though, so you cab place a door and some stairs.

5) You may have noticed the warped walls. Good for you! Now to fix them, drag any type of flooring tiles from the shorter area, to the taller are. Make sure you get the entire area of the taller area! The walls will now be at a level where they will all be at the same hight as if they were on a foundation.

6) You can delete the floor tiles.

7) Turn of the cheat ( boolprop constrainfloorelevation true ) and just build your house around the garage. At least one of the walls in the garage area will be warped. You can still place a garage door there but it may or may not show the animation when your car leaves the garage. This doesn't affect the gameplay.

Hope this helps!

Thanks a ton shrekheatherbelle!! :)

Even though this was done for sims 2, the basics of it still work for sims 3, just drop the "boolprop" prefix to the cheat code. I used it to add a garage to my already existing house that was built on a foundation. It was a pain in the tail and probably more complicated than it should be but that goes back to the developers. Thanks a ton for posting this!! :)

Try saving and exiting the lot, then editing the lot again.

When you display the walls on the ground level only, are the walls at the garage door full height? Foundation height? Some pictures would help.

When you did step #10, did you even out the top level? If you did the wrong level, then you'll have problems with the door.
