View Full Version : Major changes to MTS2 - Updated 27th August 2008

Delphy
28th Aug 2008, 08:55 PM
Hi All,

Today sees quite a few backend code changes for MTS2 - as well as the apartment life update, I have devised a new search and filtering method which extends the forum/category system to allow multiple arbitrary search parameters to be attached to a particular download.

The technical list is here:

Pets -> Cats has been renamed to Pets -> Animals
All threads in Pets -> Dogs have been moved to Pets -> Animals and assigned a category of "Dogs"
By Room -> Bedroom/Nursery has been renamed to By Room -> Bedroom
By Room -> Nursery has been created
All threads in By Room -> Bedroom/Nursery with a title of "nursery" have been moved to By Room -> Nursery
Categories "Bedding", "Beds" and "Other object" have been added to By Room -> Bedroom
Categories "Bedding", "Cribs/Toddler Beds" and "Other objects" have been added to By Room -> Nursery
Most download results are now limited to a maximum of 2000 threads. - Reverted back to old code for now
The front page has been revamped and should work better on widescreen monitors
Additional Search parameters have been added to the following sections:

All Lots & Housing sections
All Body Shop Clothing sections
Body Shop Skintones
Body Shop Hair
Body Shop Facial Hair
Body Shop Glasses and Other Accessories
All Buy Mode By Function sections
All Game Modifications sections

The Upload Wizard now accepts Apartment Life uploads
Apartment Life has been added to the user profile
Lots & Housing -> Apartments has been added to the download section
A download summary has been added to the threads that contain search parameters.
Some of the "banner messages" have been incorporated into a rotating message that appears in place of the Site/Tech news

Please note that all creators should double check their uploads to make sure they have the applicable search filters selected. This is to ensure downloaders can find your items! To edit your threads, go to them and click Edit underneath the Download Details box. (You can see a list of your uploads using your profile or via My Feedback)

Until the creators actually update thier items, most of the filters will return nothing... However, as more and more people update then it should start getting back meaningful results.

I hope you like the changes and, as usual, let me know if there are any bugs.

Regards
Delphy

I've reverted back the "2000 threads limit" code for now. However, even if it was still the old way, in most cases you can filter further down to see the rest of the threads, and 2000 threads is some 120+ pages anyway... so who is going to look at all that?

I haven't changed anything about Creator Feedback... but I did accidentally set the www server times 1 month too fast :P So thats now fixed. Thanks :)

Stupid question, how do I make sure my downloads have the applicable search filters selected?

I added the appropriate search parameters to my uploads, then did a search to make sure that it worked. Got the following errors:

"Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /download.php on line 126"

"Unable to add cookies, header already sent.

Note that I have cookies enabled.

Found two issues after adding search flags to my clothing...

1) Can't find any way to actually use them in Search. If I use them as keywords, they don't seem to work. I don't see a list of checkboxes, like the one creators get when editing threads.

2) When I edit a thread for the 2nd time, after already adding search flags, some of the search flags are forgotten. For example, I checked age: child, gender: both, type: everyday, and outfit type: top. All those flags were unchecked when I edited the thread for the 2nd time.

THANK YOU for the new search flags! I've always found it a bit lacking to only be able to categorise an upload only for, say, adults, when it's actually a multi-file upload ranging from teen to elder, or to have a skin out down as everyday only when I've actually categorised it as everyday, formal and outerwear. So this makes me very, very happy! :D You rock, you know that, right?

ETA: I also noticed some disappearing flags, though; while the categories and ages were still there when I checked my uploads, gender (both), clothing style (sci-fi), other type (none), Maxis flags (none) and outfit type (full outfit) had all disappeared. It doesn't retract from my happiness, though. ;)

I've updated my uploads; hopefully properly. I think this will of great help for creators to get their items in the proper category and to also help downloaders find things easier.

I appreciate the need for more organization and more search options, but I'm seriously not digging the new search parameters. Updating my threads would mean pigeonholing furniture sets into "modern" or "ultramodern" categories when they really don't fit into those categories. Overall, I like the changes, but some creations defy definition.

Strange, some of the changes I made to the checkboxes doesn't stick. Age groups and binned/unbinned checkboxes work, but for the others (mods-related, top/full/bottom, etc), they unchecked themselves  Am I missing something here?

ETA : I also noticed that some of my uploads don't count to the main graph in the scorecard. The entries for certain uploads aren't listed in the daily main graph although the individual per-item graphs show the counts just fine. I don't know if it's related to the changes you've just made.

Overall, I like the changes, but some creations defy definition.Surely, these search parameters are optional... just to help people find things which match specific criteria. If your furniture doesn't fit into these categories, you can avoid checking any of them and just specify your own search keywords instead.

Thanks for the reports for all of you reporting "missing" boxes. This should now be fixed (was an error if only one checkbox out of a multiple select was ticked)

jasonduskey, we chose search terms based on whats popular - if you want to suggest other themes, thats fine too.

CatOfEvilGenius: The search parameters do not appear in the main download search. You first have to drill to the specific section you want to filter, and then you'll see the specific parameters. Can you imagine if the download main page had to show all filters from all forums? It'd be a mess. :)

I'm not sure if this is my fault, but in case it isn't: It returns with an error (which I -obviously- didn't catch) but it will take the avatar anyway. So, nothing is wrong, but it just wants to tell me so. If I remember correctly, it was something, like, "something in the database is too long". I'm sorry I know this is a sucky report.

Mootilda, thanks for the report - download filtering and searching should work as normal again.Still not working quite right for me. If I filter for Lot size = Tiny, I see my tiny downloads, but if I filter for Number of bedrooms = 2, then no 2-bedroom lots are found. Just to be sure, I checked my first download and it says:

Download Summary:
Number of bedrooms: 2
Custom Content Included: No CC
Furnishings: Starter Furnishings

Delphy

Okay, I've finally fixed up the Number of Bedrooms search for Lots. Turns out I totally forgot about mySQLs built in "stopword" list which stops the search if any of the words in that list are found - and guess what? One, Two, Three, None, etc are all there... and you can't search on 1, 2, 3, 4 etc becuase the minimum length is 3 characters...

So, I've renamed the number of bedrooms to be longer, and updated all the current ones in the database, tested it, and it seems to work :)

None of my tops show up. :( I flagged all my clothes before the non-sticky bug was fixed. I'll have to go reflag all my clothing. *cries* Not that I blame you. You make improvements, so thanks for that. I know debugging takes a while, and you're speedier at it than most.

Thanks for the Updates Delphster - The Flashing Updates and info on the top is Great, Could a "Featured upload" or "Check out this" type cation go on too? Or maybe a "Check out X for their X" and a bit of info? IE:
Check out Nouk - She has hairs galore!
Check out this new upload from HP - A Sequin Glitter Pony Dress! Teens - Elder!
etc. ;)
Just an Idea :)

suggestion Could BodyShop->Clothing->Child be a sufficient drill down for search tags to show up please? For example, when I want boys tops, I need to look in both Child->Male and Child->Unisex. I just want to check Child.

I noticed you eliminated the "unisex" search flag and now have just male and female, good move. Makes more sense to check both of those than to have an extra unisex flag.

Ticked checkboxes stay ticked, yay! Thank you.

Do you think it would be a trouble to change the furnishings options for the lots to ticky boxes instead of radio buttons? Nearly all of my lot uploads contain both a furnished and an unfurnished version of the lot.

I've already got them tagged with both words for search terms, but it would be helpful if I could flag it with everything that applies.

ZombieBoPeep: Organisational Queen? I think not... I'm not female ;)

Quinctia, Yeah it would be pretty hard to change that. Probably take me a good 5 seconds... I can see if I can fit it into my schedule though ;) That actually raises another point - obviously the Furnished versions will be more expensive than the Unfurnished ones, so I'd have to allow multiple prices too.

CatOfEvilGenius: No probs. What you requested is actually something that has been available for a while, except only in development and only if you knew how. I never did come up with a good solution until now on how to present it. Glad you like the changes. :)

Many thanks for your continued hard work Delphy.

I am rather confused however of what style category to put my uploads in since they are remakes of Sims 1 objects. Would it fit into Antique, Retro, or none of the above?

I'd rather not use the last option and have them get lost in a huge batch of "I don't knows". I know I'm not the only person who has remade things from other The Sims variations (Sims 1, Bustin' Out, even Pet Stories careers). Would/could this be grounds for a new style category? In a similar thought there is a lot of other uploads pertaining to Sims 2 versions of other gaming icons from Nintendo games and whatnot. I know personally I'd REALLY appreciate having a 'The Sims' or perhaps a 'Gaming' style added.

If this isn't what you are looking for could you please let me know where to put my stuff?

~Corsetcrush

Delphy
30th Aug 2008, 06:14 PM
Corsetcrush, I think you are thinking of what to classify your entire range of items. But looking at them, they do mostly seem to fit individually into a particular style. Try and think about how the actual item itself would fit, rather than the entire range.

Having "Gaming" as a style wouldn't really work for your items becuase they aren't actually a gaming style in looks - they are only gaming in terms of your inspiration. So, in this case, I would say mark the appropriate category and have Sims 1 as a keyword.

Hope that helps.

CatOfEvilGenius

BUG REPORT - only 1st page of filtered downloads shows for me

The "next page" and "2 3 4 etc." links do not work correctly when filtering is used. As an example, I looked at BodyShop -> Clothing, filtered with age: child and outfit type: top or bottom. The numbered links said there were 3 pages of downloads, but when I clicked the "next" link or the "2" or "3" links, I got a page with 0 downloads. Regardless of bumps along the way, which are to be expected, this is still a totally awesome rockin' change.

SUGGESTION

If this would not be too much trouble, could some of us volunteer to add search tags to the content of creators who have been inactive for years? Not all of it obviously, but if I find something I like and the creator hasn't tagged it and hasn't logged in forever, could I volunteer to tag it?

BUG REPORT (minor) - search flag check boxes in upload manager

The search flag check boxes get unchecked in the upload manager if I'm in Preview and go back to Main Text to change something. Not a big deal, just a minor annoyance, but if it could be easily fixed, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

Delphy

Vampchick, as I noted in the first post, if you actually try filtering using these options, then you will only get downloads that the creators have actually updated. Otherwise, if you browse normally, then all downloads will show up. So, there isn't a problem and it hasn't "messed up everything".

CatOfEvilGenius: Thanks for the bug reports, I'll look into them now.

sim~obsessor: I've made the icons slightly smaller on the List view style (which is the only place in the download manager they appeared full size).

Great job, Delphy!

However, I'm curious about two things:
1) What are the "top" threads displayed on the start page? I clicked on one an it wasn' t featured nor picked, was uploaded more than a year ago and the last coment was also about a year old. What makes a thread a "top thread" ?

2) Is it better to check the "none" checkbox or leave neiter checked when none of the options apply? Does it make a difference in returned results?

I don't like the advert as much as everyone esle, I too can understand why it's there.

But the "rotating banner" needs too go!! I hate reading something, just to have the page jump up and down is very annoying and plays with the eyes. Might give people headaches if they're trying too read tutorial or something..just my opinion.

Timman: I have tested the rotating banner in multiple browsers at multiple normal resolutions - the page does not "jump up and down" all the time unless you have your browser window set pretty narrow. At 1024 width and above (indeed, at around 950+ pixels), there is no bouncing.

As this site is designed with a minimum resolution of 1024x768 in mind, I will not remove features that are useful, reduce clutter and are only a "problem" to a very few percent of the memberbase.

Try running the browser window full screen. :)

Is there any way any of these Search parameters could be applied to the Creator Challenge uploads? Since they are all lumped into a challenge category, they don't come up in upload-type searches - lots, objects, hacks, clothes, etc. It would be great if we could specify what kinds of uploads they are.

Sorry if this was mentioned already, I only had time to skim the whole thread.

Thanks for the reports and especially to CatOfEvilGenius for the details.

I've fixed the following issues in the upload wizard:

1. Search paramters do not "save" properly which switching between pages in the upload manager
2. Search parameters are not applied to the real thread once it is submitted
3. Search parameters do not appear in the Preview screen
4. On the screen that asks for seach parameters, missing any of them off would result in the entire list being cleared.

I have confirmed that this works and keeps the search parameters after upload.

Then I went to the home page, clicked on downloads, Lots & Housing, Residential then I clicked the same boxes on the left side and then on filter search. I keep getting 0 downloads. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong though. I read all four pages thinking that I must have missed some instruction and then I re-read them again.

I decided that maybe the ticked boxes did not save so I tried to edit it again, but the boxes were already ticked.

I have only tried to edit the one lot so far -- my top download lot. Could someone please help me figure out what I'm doing incorrectly? Thanks in advance.

BUG (itty bitty buglet, actually)

The "outfit" search flag for clothing has 2 out of 3 correctly spelled choices. :)

Randir, becuase one is lowercase, one is uppercase.

CatOfEvilGenius, Fixed, thanks.

Simsane, Thanks for the report. Turns out we where running into the mySQL stop list again, due to the use of the word "No" in "No CC". I've renamed the option to "None", added a description, and rebuilt the indexes. This should work as intended now.

I see. Everythings clear about it now. :)

Thanks Delphy. I had honestly thought that I must be doing something wrong. You sure fixed it quickly! I'll go and edit my other lots now.

I wanted to add that if you ever find you have the time or inclination, it would be nice to add a Number of Bathrooms to the search feature. I find that I prefer more bathrooms in my sims' homes than what you would actually need in real life and it would be nice to search for say a three bedroom home with at least three bathrooms as well.

But I don't want to sound ungrateful and do love the changes you made. Thank you for all the hard work and time you put into this site. (I thought you were supposed to be RETIRED, lol!)

I see what you mean, Delphy, I hadn't thought of that. Although I do like Cat of Evil Genius' idea.

My idea about this would be to change the search filter by adding filter boxes were you can type in the number of bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms...

Delphy

Randir, the thing with that is that when people type stuff, they invariably get things wrong. Having it available from a static list of most common choices cuts down the possibility for mistake. Plus it's easier to index.

Simsane, the only issue I can see with adding number of bathrooms is the possibility to have "half baths". For example, 1 and a half and so on. This isn't really an issue in terms of storage, but it is in the sense of the list would be about 9 items long. :)

Randir

You are right about that, Delphy. To keep the filter list short you could also make "Single bathroom" and "Multiple bathrooms" for the filter.

1 bathroom
1 1/2 or 2 bathrooms
2 1/2 or 3 bathrooms
3 1/2 or more bathrooms

I think that covers most houses. There aren't any with NO bathrooms, are there? :)

Number of bedrooms:

Now that we have apartments, I'm a bit confused about how to determine the number of bedrooms... My initial feeling is that it should reflect the number of bedrooms in one apartment, which obviously means that an apartment building can have 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms at the same time.

But I was looking at this download:
http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=300553

and I see that tutujoy2 rated the building as "Number of bedrooms: 5 or more" even though every apartment in the building has exactly 2 bedrooms.

Is there any concensus as to whether this search should reflect the total number of bedrooms in the building, or just in each apartment?

I'm afraid that this search parameter becomes almost meaningless unless it applies to individual apartments, since very few apartment buildings will have less than 5 bedrooms.

Special Flags:

Lots have an option which I'm not sure that I understand:
Special Flags: Not Applicable

Can someone explain how this is different from just unchecking "home business" and "beach lot"?

Delphy

Mootilda, the reason for the "Not Applicable" is becuase the upload wizard requires you to tick at least one in every section. If you didn't tick anything it would think you hadn't ticked something or missed a section. Hence the need for "Not Applicable".

Apartments will get it's own set of search parameters (that will override the existing Lots ones) once more Apartments are uploaded and we can see a trend.

Should I change all of my uploads to have "not applicable"? Or, can I leave them with nothing checked?

Great updates Delphy! :)

Just 2 concerns:
- Is there a way to view the downloads without clicking "[ Click here to see all downloads ] " everytime you visit?
- Also, I dont see anything in the creator feedback forum, is it just me?

Anyway, thanks again! And keep up the great work with the site, appreciate it! :D

I have got a new computer since my old one crashed and I don't have my stuff I uploaded to Mods, so how can I updated my uploads?

If you have nothing uploaded here then you don't need to update anything :)

So then I don't see the issue - since this is talking about updating your downloads here on the site - nothing to do with anything on your PC.

This is an ongoing issue I've had since the update. When I click on links (occasionally), my browser (IE7) encounters an error and closes. The first few days or so after the update, it was a constant issue. Now it is an occasional problem. Today it happened when I clicked on the banner at the top of the screen (Latest Site News:..., Never made any custom content...). Yesterday, it was when I was trying to look at something (clicked on a link) on the Downloads page. Don't know if it's a site issue or a browser issue, so I decided to report it.

Nothing much to explain - it's not an error becuase it's a deliberate misspelling.
