View Full Version : What did you discover today while playing the sims?

I learned tonight that male "maids" not only have pink costumes and lavender costumes, but also white costumes.
heh, the grim reaper is not always all business.
he stayed over at my sim's house after she died (the lot was then empty) to watch tv, use the restroom. it was only after he got bored and left that i finally got the "all your sims are dead on this lot" message.

Yes it seems to be dependent on whether anyone is left or not; I've noticed that for me at least the Grim Reaper doesn't do anything particularly interesting if there are people left in the house, but if there is no one left he'll make himself right at home.

In that case, I guess I learned today that I should be killing off more sims' households. :)

Yeah, but you don't delete the mesh (if it uses one), so you might have a lot of unused meshes in your downloads folder then.

You can't normally develop any sort of actual relationship with the Grim Reaper and, if you try and somehow succeed, it can b0rk your game bigtime. You can impregnate Sims safely with children fathered by the Grim Reaper if you have inSimenator, but it doesn't actually do anything special; mostly the supposed benefit is that the kids are pretty, but that's only because the actual Grim Reaper Sim doesn't have any genetics, so it defaults to the face that most people think of as "the pretty Maxis face".

I had a sim age from teen to adult, and all she wanted was to move out and get a job promotion, so I moved her into her own house, and one of the neighbors that came to welcome her to the neighborhood was her younger sister with whom she was BFF! She only moved one lot over! :howdy:

Not as long as you stick to impregnation and don't use it to make them actually KNOW the Grim Reaper. (The inSim option is the same as the debug mode option, but probably a little safer for most users because it's a separate option ("Grimpregnation" or something like that).)

I discovered that the number of Sims visiting a uni's secret society lot is determined by the MaxNumberOfVisitingSims value. I was wondering why 25 secret society members kept showing up every time I went to the secret society lot, and then remembered that I had upped this value in my UserStartup file (I had been hoping it would increase the number of Sims who would show up on community lots, but it doesn't).

Food Poisoning makes them vomit. I was playing Brandi Broke and she had been at the messiest mess lot challenge house I had played earlier- she ate bad food.
I honestly didn't know they vomited when poisoned with food, so I kept expecting a preggo bump. I had to pull out the insim baby machine to check to see if she was pregnant when she wasn't getting signs of pregnancy. Then a prompt came up saying she wasn't sick anymore.
I kinda wish there was a way to see when they are sick with the flu or food poisoning besides a little prompt that goes away. It really freaked me out to see her vomiting like that- I thought she was bugged or going to explode with 10 kids lol.

one of my sims was pregnant but not showing yet, and then kept puking more often than my usual sims did and right before she was supposed to pop into the second trimester she had a spontaneous miscarriage and i was told to give her lots of love and care as she recovered
? i didnt even know that was possible in this game!
and then i was playing a different family while talking on the phone and not paying attention (possibly lagging on taking care of my sims :P) and my sim who was in her second trimester all of a sudden went into labor and then i was informed that she had gone into pre-term labor ! thats exactly what the thing said....and it told me to work on her diet and give her plenty of rest
i was like whoa!

Doesn't it depend on what speed you are playing the game? I've heard them on normal speed and its more that just two drawn out notes. Someone said it sounds a bit like the Sims theme they are whistling.
I have heard it as just 2 notes when I was playing on double speed though.

in CAS the custom heads you make in Bodyshop will only show up if the skin tone they were made in is selected. I was making a Sim with the unlocked green alien skin, and when I went to the "heads" tab, there was only one head! I freaked, to put it mildly. When I changed her skin to one of the default tones, there were more heads, but only half my custom ones. The rest of my custom heads were under the other default skin tone I tend to use. Just imagine expecting to see 2 full pages of heads, and only getting one single head!

The ghost is actually cheering the bed. They get really attached to things like the bed and even their old toilet. :argh: If you sell any of their 'favourite' things they get really angry. I've heard of some people putting the bed in the attic or cellar if the ghost keeps waking up the new occupant and they didn't want to 'sell' the bed in case the ghost stepped up the haunting as a result.

I saw the "flushing while other sim showered" lastnight- the husband did a back arch like you'd do when the water got cold or too hot and then he leaped out of the shower and yelled at his wife. I had a good laugh.
Also they found some starfish in the sand and they tell other sims the story about the starfish!! I thought that was WAY cool! And then those sims can tell other sims the story of the starfish. Doesn't seem to do it with the shards of glass or conch shell though, just the starfish if its in the house.
OH and here's a big bad one I found out- my sims dog kept going negative very fast and he wasn't doing anything really to be so negative. I followed him around watching his bars after I fully greened him with InSim. He was going red due to a Snapdragon plant that was poofing off the green gas...I had read that you can get a defective snapdragon plant, but never expected it to be deadly- poor Pete the dog he didn't die but he could have if I wasn't watching him. I gave him a happy plant and deleted the bad one- so hes happy again. I bet if you filled an asylum with the defective ones you'd kill off some sims pretty darn fast.

Most loathesome bit of code ever. I'm in total agreement. What kind of parent yells at a baby for soiling its diaper? Fortunately, there's a hack at MATY (http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,7.0.html) (antibabylecture) that will prevent the scolding as long as the Sim has activities queued when the diaper bomb goes off. If they're just idling around the nursery, scolding still occurs.

Sims can live downtown. Maybe because in The Sims (1), Sims couldn't live downtown in Hot Date, I just never considered it. In fact, after it occurred to me to check tonight, I opened the Downtown neighborhood for *the very first time*. Wow. And there are some mighty nifty houses there.
Even stranger is that I knew you could live in Blue Village, so why it didn't occur to me to try living downtown is just beyond me.

If you don't know what happens- this is what happens-
He wished for romance, flames shot out of the wishing well and (I had assumed a zombie would come out)... Ms Crumplebottom came out and proceeded to beat him with her purse, then ATTACKED him! She thoroughly kicked his butt and left the lot. :(
He didn't deserve that at all, he's a kind gentle natured sim.

The flu is vicious. Thank god for Grandma's Comfort Soup from Freetime (for Family aspiration Sims). I have crowds of Townies and neighbors come over, whip up a batch or two of the soup, and invite everyone to eat. It has seriously helped manage the flu epidemic that has plagued Pleasantville for over a year. Even if I can't completely eradicate it, at least my active Sims are really easy to cure. Good thing most of my families include at least one Family sim.

I discovered you can take your cat to work...
Assuming it's a glitch, my Sim was holding my kitten at the time the carpool arrived. He changed into his work clothes (still holding the kitten), walked outside (still holding the kitten), got in the car (still holding the kitten), and off he went (guess what? Still holding the kitten!).
I've tried this with the Nanny, who apparently decided that she liked my Sim's little baby so much that she kidnapped it =)
She was holding the baby; my Sim had just gotten home, and the Nanny went off to her ride as it arrived - still, to my disbelief, holding the baby in her arms. LOL
I deduced naturally that it was a bug, saved and exited to neighborhood, and sure enough, the baby was laying by the roadside as I came back in.

Well I didn't discover it today, but Sims with really low Neatness scores can rummage through rubbish (that's the part I already knew) BUT, they can sometimes find money! I left a teenage Sim rummaging for ages and they found several 100 simoleons! This family always had a tight budget, so I don't think they chucked that much money away.
I discovered yesterday that if you order more food than you can pay for, the delivery guy will always take the fridge away. It has happened before, but I never realised it was a general rule until it happened 3 times in my game.

but I only discovered today that .... Sims can live downtown.
I knew I could build Downtown, but it had never occured to me either to try and live there. Now, of course, I have that song by Petula Clark stuck in my head "when you are low and life is making you lonely, you can always go, Downtown..."
I also found that blind dates are not always single townies. I paid the $5,000 for a good date, and when she fell from the sky I thought "wow, she looks just like Rose (my vampire)" and it WAS Rose! Now she is very much in love with her live-in boyfriend, Count Victor, but since they are not married, the game will still pull them for blind dates. Now I had a great date with Rose, but the LTW is WooHoo 20 sims, so I invited her over the next day, and she brought her friend, Count Victor! I was so worried that there was going to be some big fight, but no! Rose kissed me, then went in to watch TV, and Count Victor started hitting on me! So now I am WooHooing both of them, and so far they don't seem to mind...

Not really an important one but I found today that all the Garden Club people are considered part of the same household. A blind date from the Gypsy actually brought a fairly attractive Sim (and better still, not an elder, which is what my males get 99% of the time!) I decided she was the perfect life partner for my recently divorced Sim and invited her over to get things progressing. I was surprised -and at first dismayed - when the "Invite Household" option came up, thinking I had somehow hooked up with someone from a Maxis family without realizing it, but turns out, it's just the Garden Club people. The Sim's name is Allyson; I don't remember ever seeing her when the club has done its inspections before. She even has an entry level job in the law enforcement track.

As some of you know, Dina was once married to Michael Batchelor. Well... Dina and Mortimer are married on my game, and when Dina was about to have twins I looked at both their family trees for name ideas. I clicked onto Bella's family tree and guess what I found? Michael Batchelor is Bella's brother! This is the second time that Dina has tried to marry into the Goth family, maybe she realised that Michael wasn't as connected as she originally hoped, so set her eyes on the Patriarch? ;) [I'm just speculating as to some sort of storyline Maxis hid from us here].

24th Jul 2008, 3:16 PM
In some respects, she isn't the heir due to practicalities. I wanted Cassandra and Darren to get married, but I didn't want two couples in the same house - with Mortimer and Dina at the Goth Manor too - so I let Cassandra move in with Darren. This also means I can preserve the Dreamer family album. :)
In terms of storyline however, it's a little more complicated. Dina and Mortimer have married, effectively making Dina the Matriarch. Once Mortimer dies, she will have more rights to inherit the house than Cassandra; Dina and Mortimer have had twin girls, so both of those children have the right to claim it (especially as they are currently living there), Dina generally has higher status, especially as Cassandra and Alexander are the products of a previous marriage, Dina is a widow... and, Dina will be the Head of the Family still. I love making intricate storylines!

could you get her a promotion? Or is she at the top of her career? if she is, i would suggest moving in an unemployed adult - just think of it as a sort of aupair. If worst comes to worst, you could always get her another job, unless that career is ltw, or cheat one of the kids up to a teen. Also, if both of her kids are still in the child stage, that is probably why you can't get the nanny. That always happens to me D:

let me clarify
dad works 9AM-3PM, mom works 8AM-4PM, both are in their LTW career
dad can't hire a nanny (even though he works weekends) mom CAN though, for that 3PM-4PM slot and weekends. my children do need nannies. Their dad couldn't go to work because of the "can't leave the little ones" pop up. In a single parent house, I got the pop up of "Chris is too young to stay home alone" when she came home from school before mom came home from work.

Melethana - Could you have the dad call the nanny "Just for now" before he leaves for work?
You'd have to do it every day, but at least she'd show up. To be honest, I rarely hire nannies to track the parents' schedules, since with all the promotions, days off, etc. they get as they're advancing in their careers, it's too hard to keep track of.
When I get the "Carpool for XXX will arrive in one hour" message, I cancel whatever that sim is doing and send them to the telephone to get the nanny to come over.

Do you have any ghosts on the lot? Sometimes the ghost will levitate a chair but many of the chairs no longer seem to support this animation even though your sim will 'react' to it with shock. Also, sometimes the shock reaction seems to stick and they keep reacting to it even during the day.

I hadn't played Strangetown since I first installed my game, two years ago, and I always play with the walls cut-away, so I was surprised to see that in Olive Spectre's house there are no doorways to the kitchen or living room. The arches were placed using the move_objects cheat allowing sims to walk through them, but giving the appearance they are walking through walls. They even put curtains around them to enhance the effect (& let you know where the doors are, I presume). I was doing some make-overs and decided to check out this lot & discovered this. I'm sure everyone else figured this out ages ago, but it's new to me.
Menaceman44
26th Jul 2008, 5:29 PM
Actually its not an effect to make it look like Sims walk through walls. Its a glitch that happens when you install expansion packs. For some reason the game will only allow you to place curtains on one side of an arch. To place them on both sides you need move_objects turned on. So the cheat was used on the curtains, not the arch.
I know its an expansion pack related glitch cos I've had it happen on lots I've created myself. For example I place a window in a wall and a light or picture on the same segment of wall with move_objects. After I install an EP and go back to the same lot the window isn't seethrough any more because the wall has filled the opening.
The game seems to decide that the wall decoration takes presidence over any windows, doors or arches.

Here are some examples:
You, Yes you behind the bikesheds! I Am your Headmaster, MR. MONSTER and your grades are a mess. Fix 'em quick or you will grow up to be a hill of beans. And also, don't think you can get off easy by not telling your parents I called. I will come to your house and I will trash your room and will eat all of your sugary cereal! Then I'll buy some more cereal, or wait, I'LL BUY THE WHOLE STORE OUT, and will eat it all on your front lawn while you're inside with your malt o'meal, super sorry you ever failed calculus. Also, I will forbid any student or teacher at the school to call you anything but Monsieur Marcel Duncechamp from now on. How do you like me now?
Hello, I am MR. MONSTER, your kiddo's Princi-Pal. Something's got to be done for reals. Your little darling is a failure and it is totally rubbing off on everyone. Just this morning I failed my field sobriety test on the way to school and had to waste two full hours explaining to the fuzz how poorly your kid is doing in its classes, which was particularly trying for me because my eyeballs were swimming in fine, oak aged scotch at the time.
Kiss.../Tonsil Hockey (I'd be intrigued to see what sort of animation they would have made for that.)
It looks like you're visiting this lot with its owner and all of the employees. It's time for a store party! (I think I'm going to try this and see what happens.)
Some DownTownies have arrived to invite you on an outing downtown. Click on their car and choose "Go On Outing Downtown" to join them. (I think this would have made so much more sense than a rondom Downtownie calling a Sim they've never met on the phone.)
I don't think I can change my appearance right now. There's just too much hair. Oh, the hair!

dreamydre15 - once I even had an infant get out of the crib on it's own, but on further consideration maybe the nanny didn't put her back...
New thing! toddlers can tell their parents when they need to go potty! a non-potty trained toddler went to her mother, sat in front her, waved her arms and thought "potty!" her mom said "aww noo boo" patted the child on the head and walked away! I was surprised at how much sense the toddler had, and how silly her mom was!
Toddlers do climb out of their own cribs when their logic skill is high enough.

My new legacy guy had a blind date from the gypsy and he got The Diva. With one lightening bolt- they hit it off. He was poor, but after 2 dates they both wanted to be married to each other. She got negative memory on the engagement as he was poor and she was a fortune sim.
Anyway- this is what I discovered-
The Diva when joining my home brought in 70,000 Simoleons!!!!!!! Plus the expensive standing T.V, poker table, 2 kareoke machines, 1 sunflower, the exercise globe thing, and one more thing but for the life of me cannot remember what it was. Oh and if you asked her to tip the maid she will throw a huge fit. She was extremely annoying for Marks wife- he wanted kids and she wanted money- she had an "accident" shortly after he was abducted and got a baby without her help- 3 try for babies and she wouldn't get preg.

If a sim views a painting and doesn't like it, and the one who painted it is there, the artist will be upset about it. I'd had a guy paint a portrait of his husband, and afterwards the husband viewed it and shook his head at it, and the guy started to cry because he didn't like his painting!

I discovered that apparently the time in game can freeze? :S I was having a wedding party, and for some reason at the end I spotted the New Year's Baby doing this little dance, and then time froze. Like I could scroll around, pause, play, go into buy/build mode, save, tell Sims to do things, and all this stuff, but time did not pass. The time was literally frozen. I left the lot and went back and it was fixed again. Really weird, though.

okay, no duh we all love cc, but I just realized how much of it is out there. I just have to think "I wish there was a way for me to..." and within 2 minutes of looking at the forums here I can ususally find the exact mod/hack I want. My most recent one was the inability to figure out the pre-destined hobby of 2 CAS sims in the same household (first time the "wow that hobby is great" thing didn't pop up) And poof! there is a link to simwardrobe.com where there is a lovely purple vase to display, and then alter the pre-destined hobby!

Well, I discovered that you can have two nannies at once at your house. So what's better then one bad nanny? Two. My sim just had another set of twins, and she had a track schedule set with the nanny. However, she couldn't wait for the nanny to show up so I had her call and choose "just for now." Now the regularly scheduled nanny showed up too. They're both taking bottles out and not really helping...

For some reason when I had 2 nannies in my home atleast one of them (never knew if it was the scheduled or non) would cuss out the mom and then I'd have to fire her. This has occured in the same house with 2 different wives. Mark, my legacy- has had 3 wives- one was the diva who completely went ape when they didn't make enough money- she badgered him to no end about money and went into constant asp failure nonstop. Stupid fortune sims- I've never had one that was so awful before. She had a untimely death... Then the Wishing Well hooked him up with a elder that was about to die. The Ottomon Grama- anyway she was the first one the nanny slapped around and yelled at. Then the 3rd wife was one of the FT art secret lot girls- all she does is paint and pop out babies. She was shoved, slapped AND yelled at before Cassidy could get a word in to fire her. I don't know what causes the nannies to get all angry.
Anyway- I've realized some sims just aren't into being romantic or kissing- they'd rather play with them then kiss.

Yesterday one of my new Sims was using his telescope in the daytime to get some logic, and looks like he was spying on one of my other Sims, cos while he was looking, he had a thought bubble of her, and got really shocked and covered up the eyepiece, gasping. Guess he saw something he didn't want to see.
Then a little while later the Sim he was peeping on ran into his house and gave him a slap and a lecture, hehe

I discovered, rather last night actually, that sim children(Children to Teen) can and will run to their rooms crying if there is an argument in front of them, not 100% sure how it was triggered though.
I was holding a wedding, everything was going well until the bride-to-be's ex-husband showed up out of nowhere, so the bride goes over to him and starts to argue with him in front of all the guests(this of course killed the wedding party) when this happened the two girls of the bride went running up to their rooms crying, The action in the que said "Get upset".
