Chapter 14

Shadee lay on her bed, sighing deeply and intently staring at the ceiling. Two days had passed since the incident and her grandmother was still giving her the silent treatment. Still, she was allowed to do all the thing she had done before, like dating Dirk or going out with Sebastien and Holly. But she would have preferred to be locked inside the house and beaten up to the horrible silence Gypsy was treating her to.

The girl just couldn’t grasp why her grandmother was behaving that way. Was her grandfather really that sick? A cold shudder went down her spine. What if he died and it would be only her fault!

There was a soft knock on the door that woke Shadee up from her thoughts. It was Caleb.

‘Dinner’s ready.’ He peeked inside ‘Grandma told me to call you down.’

He walked inside the room and sat next to Shadee on the bed, throwing off his sneakers.

The girl looked at him and couldn’t help but smile. He was such a beautiful little boy. She was very happy to have him in her family. He had been told that he was adopted at the age of five, but grandfather Menas had explained to him several times through the years that his parents had loved him very much. Caleb had begun to call Menas and Gypsy “grandpa” and “grandma”, even though they were his parents on the papers. He was somewhat Shadee’s little brother.

‘Why is grandma upset, Shadee?’ Caleb asked with all his innocence ‘Did I do something wrong? Did you? Why doesn’t she talk to you?’

‘It’s nothing.’ Shadee smiled back and stroke his red hair ‘Now go down to dinner, it’s gonna get cold! And don’t worry, I’m coming too, I have to wash my hands first.’

After a very silent dinner, Shadee returned to her dimly lit bedroom. She really felt miserable and down. Just as she wanted to get under the warm covers of her bed a familiar buzz started her. Her cell phone was ringing.

‘Hi, Shadee, it’s Holly! Sorry to bother you.’

‘Hi, Holly! You aren’t bothering me at all.’ Shadee furrowed her brow slightly. Holly seemed sad ‘Is something wrong, are you okay?’

‘It’s nothing wrong, just…’

‘Just what? Let me call Seb and we can all meet at the-’

‘NO! Don’t call him! It’s you I want to talk to. See…I have a problem, something that has never happened to me before.’

‘Holly, you’re worrying me! What sort of problem?’

‘I…I think I’m in love…with Sebastien!’

This unexpected answer hit Shadee straight through the heart like a cold icicle. She had never, in her whole life, thought of this. And, without actually knowing why, it irked painfully at the inside of her stomach.

‘Shadee? Are you still there?’

She tried to regain composure and breathed deep before answering.

‘Umm…wow! I am dumbstruck! I don’t even know what to say! In love with Seb?’

‘Please don’t make fun of me, Shadee!’ Holy pleaded at the other end of the line, sounding close to tears ‘I think I really, like really, love him!’

‘I won’t make fun of you hun! But when did this happen? How did you realise? And do you think he likes you in that way too?’

‘Well…I’ve had a crush on him ever since the end of Junior year. I don’t know…it’s just the way he acts, he talks…and his smile…that’s just something to die for!

‘I don’t think it’s gonna work out, Holly!’ Shadee blurted out quickly, afterwards realising how harsh she had sounded, crushing the poor girl’s dream ‘I mean, you two are friends, best friends and nothing more, right?’

‘You’re wrong here, Shadee! I think he loves me too! Remember yesterday when we were at the café? And I was all sad that no one invited me to the Ball? He put his hand over mine! I was like all butterflies inside and could barely say something!

It feels so good to finally admit all this to someone! Keeping this all bottled up was so hard! You can’t even imagine how I just shuddered every time he touched me, even if it was by mistake! And –’

‘Ooops! I gotta go, Holly!’ Shadee heard her own high pitched voice say ‘Dinner’s ready! But we’ll talk tomorrow about this, okay?’

She shut the phone without waiting for Holly to reply and put it on the end table. Why had she done that? Why had she just shut the phone in Holly’s face when the girl had opened up to her? She was behaving like a selfish child, exactly how her grandmother had said. But this time she really had no reason. Her two best friends were going to get together and be happy with each other. Why did this bother her? In the end, she had always wanted the best for both of them.

‘They’re best friends! Why ruin their friendship over a little crush?’ she asked herself aloud.

And, after all, could she be sure Sebastien felt the same way? He could have just done that out of friendship, Holly had always been unfortunate in love. But what if he really did love her? They would get together…continue to be together through college…and eventually get married, have kids, kiss, be all intimate with each other.

That night, Shadee couldn’t find her rest. She just tossed from one side to the other, unable to find a solution to her dilemma.

Wow, great update! When I read that Holly was in love with Seb, it made me smile but then, how Shadee acts, I think she's jealous or something, you captured the feeling so well, I would feel like that too when 2 of my best friends would fall in love.

Chapter 15, Part I

Shadee took a long breath and continued to stare at her two best friends. They were all at Shadee’s house, after school. Sebastien was chatting loudly gesticulating wildly with his arms, telling something to Holly and seemingly completely oblivious that Shadee was feeling miserable. Holly, lieing on the floor very close to him, was attentive at every little word that come out his mouth and was smiling like crazy.

And it really seemed like she was right! There was a very high possibility that Sebastien liked Holly too. Shadee could’t exactly name what that was that gave her this impression, perhaps the sweet and gentle looks he threw her…

‘Umm…Holly!’ Shadee piped out when all the attention Holly was getting began to really annoy her.

Both Sebastien and Holly turned around with surpised looks on their faces, as though they had forgotten somone else was in the room with them.

‘Sorry to bother!’ Shadee rolled her eyes, not managing to hide the fact that she was angry.

‘ What do you mean?’ Sebastien smiled, looking quite bemused.

‘Nothing! Just nothing! I only wanted to ask Holly when we’ll be going dress shopping for the ball. It’s coming closer and we still haven’t got something special to wear.’

‘We could even go now if you want.’ Holly responded quickly and grinned widely at her friend.

With a sudden unexplainable urge to pull Sebastien and Holly apart, Shadee stood up briskly.

‘Let’s go then! We don’t have anything for tomorrow, so no problem, right!’

At first, Holly threw her a puzzled look, as though she was about to say no. But she seemed to have changed her mind.

‘Ok then. If Seb has nothing against being dragged through thousands and thousands of shops and watch us try on billions of dresses…’ she trailed off giving him a sweet smile.

‘For you, I’d do anything!’ he answered back and brushed Holly’s back lightly with his hand.

1. Shadee was first to make friends with Seb, Holly back off Shadee has rights for first dibs!
2. I thought Seb liked Shadee way back when, after his dad had tried his luck and Shadee's and Seb's argument.
3. The amount of sexual tension between those two is just brilliant! I mean, his being jealous of her boyfriend, her being jealous of Holly, them both being oblivious to eachothers feelings, the arguments have such a current flowing beneath the surface and the whole fact their kids would be so adorable!

Leaning on the wall of the changing cabin, Shadee threw several furtive looks at Sebastien. They were both waiting for Holly to come out, trying on the third dress in one of the many shops. There was an awkward silence between them, but this suited Shadee fine. She was able to look as much as she wanted at Sebastien without risking to be spotted by a jealous Holly.

In fact, it was the first time that Shadee was looking at her buddy in very different way. Her glance was sliding down his protuberant cheekbone, then swiftly down his smooth neck and measuring the firm body hiding behind the useless fabric of his clothes...

Yes, Shadee had realised that day something that had been hiding deep down inside her heart ever since ninth grade: she was madly in love with Sebastien! Unfortunately, the timing of this discovery had been the worst possible. Holly had said it first…it was only right for her to take Seb. And after all, Shadee already had Dirk. The thought of her boyfriend didn’t bring the slightest emotion inside the girl’s heart. She sighed, for the billionth time that day, but finally knowing the reason for the sadness.

In the end, she had to take a decision. Would she fight with all her might for Sebastien’s love, trot on Holly’s feeling and do whatever was in her power to have him for herself? Or would she just retreat and let her friends be happy?

She didn’t have time to answer as Holly stepped out of the cabin exactly that moment.

‘I guess this is the best I can do…’ she sighed and looked from Shadee to Sebastien, waiting for an opinion.

Holly was dressed with a very pretty, soft pink, knee-length dress and looked mighty ashamed, though Shadee had no idea why.

‘Wow, you’re radiating!’ she exclaimed, looking at her friend ‘This really is the best dress! It looks wonderful on you!’

‘I think this is the one you should buy!’ Seb grinned measuring her from head to toe ‘It’s…how do you call that…glamorous!’

‘You think so?’ the girl turned around and looked at herself in the mirror ‘I’ll buy it then, we’ll be able to go find you guys some nice outfits.’

After having paid for the dress, they decided to go look for the two other outfits they needed. But Shadee stopped abruptly just as they had left the shop.

‘You know what guys? You two go find a tux for Seb. I’m…umm…meeting up with Dirk to find a dress for myself. I just remembered I’ve talked with him earlier today about that.’

Holly and Sebastien exchanged puzzled looks. And Shadee thought she could see a hint of panic on their faces. That was probably because they were going to be all alone for the rest of the evening.

‘Oh.’ Holly breathed after a few moments of silence ‘Okay then…we’ll just meet later then.’

‘Try tomorrow.’ Shadee bitterly smiled back ‘I’m really sorry guys, but I’ll probably spend the rest of today with Dirk.’

She turned around quickly before any of them could see the tears that had rapidly filled her eyes. She had reached her decision in a very spontaneous and unselfish way. She was going to let Holly have Seb. God knew, she had been through enough crap up to that point, it was about time she found some peace and happiness.

The girl wandered off to the furthest formal clothing shop. She was going to find a dress by herself, as the whole Dirk thing was yet another spontaneous invented idea.

‘Looky who’s here!’ a voice sneered as soon as Shadee had entered “Val’s Robes” ‘Has Dirk finally gotten some sense into his head and dumped you?’

The girl’s heart skipped a few beats. This most definitely wasn’t the best timing for this, not in the mood that Shadee was in! She turned around with a fake bored expression and faced Marissa and Regina who seemed to be there shopping for ball dresses too.

‘Wouldn’t you love that to happen!’ she grinned, pretending to be cheerful. She knew how big of a crush Marissa had on Dirk and enjoyed her angry expressions every time she saw them together.

Marissa huffed angrily and turned to Regina, probably asking the little b*tch to accompany her out of the store. Seconds later they were both out of sight and Shadee could finally browse through all the gowns for the perfect one, wiping the fake grin off her face.

Chapter 16

Shadee let her brush slide gently down the smooth canvas, continuing the painting she had started that morning. There had been three days since the “mall incident” and she had actually lost touch with both Holly and Seb. Even though they had tried to reach her like mad the previous days, Shadee refused to return their calls and simply decided to step back and leave them some time alone.

She could feel her eyes getting wet with tears as she applied another layer of emerald green on the two spots where Sebastien’s eyes would soon be. Even though she couldn’t have the man she loved next to her, she could simply have his painting, which was filled with emotions unlike a simple photograph.

There was a soft knock on the door and Gypsy’s head peered through the cracked door.

‘Shadee, honey, it’s Miss Dora on the phone. She has some urgent matters to discuss with you.’

Raising her eyebrows, the girl took the phone from her grandmother’s hand and muttered a faint “Yes?” in the receiver. On the other end of the line, a very familiar voice blurted out.

‘What the heck is wrong with you, Shadee?!’ Holly seemed exasperated ‘You ignored us for the rest of the weekend, you didn’t show up at school today, you didn’t bother to return my and Seb’s calls and I had to ask your grandmother to lie for me, just so I could actually talk to you!’

‘I’m sorry…’ Shadee answered back halfheartedly ‘But I only did this for the two of you, so you could be alone together and…you know…’

‘But – but…there is no need for that. You have to stay with us! It gets really weird when you’re not there and – and on top of that we have to plan everything for Saturday! It’s the prom, Shadee!’ Holly finished excitedly.

The girl sighed with relief, even though she felt a twinge of guilt at the thought that she still won’t be able to get over the fact that she loved the same man as her best friend.

‘You know what?’ Holly’s cheerful voice rang from the other end of the line again ‘I’m gonna grab Sebastien and we’ll come over to your place after school today, if that’s okay with you, of course. We have a lot to catch up with!’

‘Sure you can.’ The girl answered back smiling widely, even though she know Holly couldn’t see her ‘I’ll just fix some treats for you and we can hang out in my room.’

‘OK then, wait for us! Oh, and Seb says “hi”!’

Putting the phone back into the hook, Shadee felt a thousand times better than a few moments before.

Chapter 17, Part I

‘Hey, guys!’ Shadee flashed a huge grin stepping aside to let Holly and Sebastien walk inside the house. She couldn’t help but feel happy at the sight of Seb’s smiling face.

‘Hey!’ Holly was already walking up the stairs, but Sebastien stopped next to Shadee and looked her straight in the eyes, as if he wanted to read her thoughts. The girl felt her cheeks literally burning under his gaze. ‘Are you ok?’ he asked genuinely worried ‘Me and Holly were really concerned about you. We thought that you may have done…something irrational…’

‘Whaddayamean?!?’ Shadee blurted out reddening even more. She was very ashamed to admit it, but she had actually thought of suicide in one of those dark moments of solitude and despair.

Sebastien shrugged the idea off and smiled again.

‘Let’s go up, ok?’ the girl invited, feeling a wee bit awkward. They walked silently up the stairs and entered the room. Shadee’s heart skipped a few beats when she almost collided with Holly, who was contemplating the girl’s new painting, brows furrowed.

‘Who’s this you’re painting here, ‘cause the person looks mighty familiar. I just can’t put my finger on it who it actually is…’

Shadee rushed forward in front of Sebastien’s portrait and covered it with her back, trying to hide it from the boy’s curious glances. She could feel her face glow red once again.

‘It’s no one, someone I made up for a stupid painting…’

‘You can’t say that!’ Holly raised an eyebrow ‘In my opinion, it’s one of your best yet.’

While Shadee took the canvas off and hid it, Sebastien and Holly proceeded to serve themselves out of the plates with tasty looking treats.

‘We’re really gonna have a blast at the ball!’ Holly sighed dreamily, smiling at Seb ‘Especially that I’ll be going there with my two absolutely favorite people in the universe.’

‘Hey, why are you leaving dear ol’ Dork out of the equation?’ smirked Sebastien and stuffed his mouth with two chocolate chip cookies.

‘Because I’ll be the one concerned with him!’ Shadee answered back quirkily, trying to set her mind back to the young man that was actually her boyfriend and whom she had also ignored for the past few days ‘You two just need to worry about each other. After all, you’re prom dates.’

Awkward silence followed in which Shadee missed the impatient glance Holly and Sebastien had thrown each other.

‘You haven’t even seen my tux.’ Seb pouted, changing the subject ‘And neither I nor Holly have seen your dress!’

‘I guess that’s going to be a surprise then, won’t it? Because I’m not showing it to you!’

They continued making fun of each other and gossiping about the stuff that had happened at school for a few good hours. Shadee relaxed and simply felt happier to be with the two of them again. And on top of that, it didn’t seem to her anymore as though Sebastien and Holly was so very much in love as it had appeared a few days before. This of course was good news to her, even though she wanted them to be happy.

‘Let’s go out somewhere.’ Sebastien suggested stretching and yawning ‘I really feel like drinking a beer.’

‘Yeah, sounds good! But I have to change my clothes first.’ Shadee stood up and chose a different outfit, then they all went downstairs.

‘Hey, look there!’ Holly giggled, looking outside the window ‘Your “uncle”’s got a girlfriend!’

‘I’m almost flying out of it!’ she shouted, her pigtails waving about her in a very untidy manner.

‘Do you want me to stop pushing?’ Caleb asked his little friend with a hilariously worried look on his face ‘I don’t want you to get hurt or anything…’

‘No, it’s fun!’ she waited a few seconds for the swing to slow down a little bit, took a deep breath and jumped swiftly out of it.

Fiona was Caleb’s desk mate and best friend in the whole class. She was also shy, just like the boy, but they got along very well. They didn’t need other friends from school or anything as long as they had each other.

‘Are you hungry, Fiona? Because grandma has made some delicious Baked Alaska for desert.’

The girl shrugged and followed Caleb inside, almost colliding with the group of three teenagers walking out the door.

‘Who’s the pretty young lady?’ Shadee asked friendly, a playful smile upon her lips.

Caleb shuffled his feet uneasily and avoided the girl’s gaze.

‘Fiona, this is Shadee, my niece.’ He looked up from his feet and smiled back ‘Shadee, this is Fiona, my best friend!’

‘It is nice to meet you!’ the little girl shook hands and glowed a deep shade of scarlet, clearly uncomfortable with the awkward situation of meeting someone whom she referred to as “an adult”.

‘Me and the guys are going out.’ Shadee turned back to the boy and ruffled his auburn hair ‘You two will remain alone, so don’t set the house on fire or anything.’

‘Shadee!’ Caleb grumbled out of the corner of his mouth ‘Stop making fun of me.’

He skipped inside the house with Fiona on his trail, escaping the three friends who were giggling about “the sweet puppy love”.
