Chapter 18

Shadee breathed heavily and stared at her reflection in the mirror. Her heart was pounding in her chest as if she had run a few miles without stopping. She was perfectly aware that she was overreacting, but she just couldn’t help it. Emotions almost reached the overwhelming peak, but she restrained the tears of both happiness and sadness.

Graduation! Prom! The moment had finally come! She had dreamed about this ever since ninth grade, she had witnessed three generations of students graduate and move on to college, and now it was her and her friends’ turn. She was finally letting go of childhood for good…she was moving on to “bigger and better” things, away from her grandparents house. A shrill ring made her start and turn her head hurriedly towards the door.

‘Honey, Dirk is here! Hurry up and don’t make the boy wait for you too much.’

‘I’ll be there in a minute!’ she gasped and approached a window. Dirk had kept his promise. Outside the house, parallel with the sidewalk, was a beautiful, shiny black limo.

She giggled insanely, bit her knuckles stifling an excited scream and returned to the mirror for the dozenth time before leaving the room.

Walking slowly towards the staircase, Shadee could hear her grandma talk to Dirk; she was very satisfied to realise that their chat was quite civilized and Gypsy seemed to have forgotten about the regrettable incident.

Shadee’s heels clapped audibly on the stairs and everything went quiet in the living room. She stopped for a few seconds, smiled to herself and continued to descend, being welcomed by admiring “oh!”s and “ah!”s. Even grandpa Menas and Caleb had gathered to see her. An old-fashioned camera was situated in the middle of the room, ready to snap pictures.

‘I seriously am the luckiest man on the face of Earth…’ Dirk muttered, remembering to shut his wide-opened mouth. He hurried over to the base of the staircase and helped his prom date go down the last few stairs.

The next twenty minutes were spent taking pictures of the couple in a series of different poses. Shadee found the whole thing quite boring, but her grandparents were of totally different opinions.

‘I still have the photos from my prom!’ Gypsy exclaimed matter-of-factly ‘Of course, back then I hadn’t even met your grandfather, but they’re still a nice souvenir… Anyway, I’m digressing! You two have fun at the prom, don’t drink too much and don’t do anything you may regret!’ she threw the couple a meaningful glance and ushered them out of the house.

‘Your grandmother is a really nice person!’ Dirk smiled after both of them were seated comfortably inside the black limo ‘We could have avoided the painful moments that happened in the past – you know what I’m talking about – had you introduced me to your grandparents!’

‘Oh, leave that!’ Shadee shook her head slightly annoyed ‘You met them now!’ she breathed deeply and looked out the window for a few seconds ‘I can’t wait to get there!’ she quickly cuddled at Dirk’s chest, avoiding creasing her dress.

Dirk was taken aback by her sudden change of mood and stroke her smooth hair lovingly. ‘Me too, Shadee…me too!’

‘I am ready.’ She whispered back barely audible and felt Dirk’s body tense up.

‘You’re ready? Are you sure? Today? After the prom?’ he made a pause to breathe ‘I can get the two of us a room upstairs at that villa! Fully equipped with candles and all!’

Shadee giggled, still unsure whether she had taken the right decision. There was no sense in waiting for a miracle to happen, a chance for Holly and Seb to fall out of love, so she could at least enjoy what she had with Dirk.

The limo skidded to a halt in a front of a big, luxurious villa, specially rented for the Seniors to celebrate their graduation.

As a perfect gentleman, Dirk swiftly got out of the vehicle and ran quickly to open the door for Shadee. They both walked up to the villa, the loud noises of music and chatting voices reaching their ears.

‘Deep breath, baby!’ Dirk whispered before pushing the door open ‘All eyes are gonna be on you, my gorgeous girl!’

Indeed it was so. Everybody sitting around the lounge turned to see the couple that had entered and gossip immediately erupted from all the corners of the room. Shadee had never worn so much make-up and she had never styled herself that much. She looked absolutely fabulous and everyone noticed that.

‘Hey, Shadee!’ two people came quickly from one of the lounge’s sofa’s. It was Holly and Sebastien.

They stopped in front of each other and Shadee forgot to breathe for a few seconds. Dang, Seb looked so hunky!

‘You look fab!’ Holly piped out, measuring her friend from head to toes ‘Wow! Wow! Wow! You look super duper good in that dress!’

Sebastien looked as excited as Shadee was, a big lump in the throat preventing him from saying anything.

‘Dirk!’ the young man looked down questioningly at his girlfriend ‘I hope you don’t mind, but I’d like to spend the first few hours with my friends. Just until twelve! I’ll be all yours afterwards!’

‘Oh. Okay, I’ll just hang around with some friends then…’ it was obvious he was disappointed, but the prospect of “having” Shadee all to himself after twelve o’clock was good enough to let her go ‘We’ll meet here, at the stairs at sharp, okay? Don’t be late! I’ll arrange with the room until then!’ he winked and watched Shadee walk away to the dancing ring with her two friends.

‘This must be our wildest, craziest, most unforgettable night ever!’ Holly shouted, trying to make her voice heard over the loud music ‘And I am going to drink alcohol!’

Shadee couldn’t help but laugh at the excitement of her friend. To top that, that was the first time when Holly was drinking something stronger than beer!

At one point during Shadee’s “fun with friends”, Dirk came casually towards her and whispered quickly in her ear: “We’ve got room 21! First floor! Don’t forget, twelve o’clock, at the staircase!”. He turned back quickly, waddling out of the room and leaving a very strong smell of alcohol behind him.

Three whiskeys and four tequila shots later, Holly could barely keep herself straight. She was dancing crazily, shaking her head, waving her arms around and threatening to fall at every move.

‘Hey…lookit…Icandothis!’ she slurred and twisted her arm awkwardly ‘An’…this…andthenIdothis…’

In a second she was on all fours on the floor, breathing heavily and unable to find her balance. ‘Ithink… I’mgonnabesick!’

Seb and Shadee hurried over to help her stand up.

‘Oh, my! It’s twelve already!’ Shadee looked at Sebastien and then at the drunk Holly who had slobber all over her chin ‘Let’s try to drag her out so she can breathe some fresh air and then I’ll have to leave you alone in charge of her!’

After Holly had been safely taken outside, Shadee walked quickly to her meeting point. It was already ten past twelve and the girl was afraid to not have let Dirk wait too much. But he wasn’t there. Shadee waited two minutes, which turned into five, then into ten. Dirk wasn’t the kind of man to be late, especially on such an event.

The girl decided to go upstairs by herself and waited for her boyfriend in the room. Maybe he was already there! She walked up and followed the long corridor searching for door number 21.

13, 15, 17, 19, 21. Shadee stopped and double checked the two numbers stuck to the door. Slowly, she grabbed the handle and moved it downwards, soundlessly pushing the door open.

But then, she just stopped dead in her tracks, watching the dreadful scene play in front of her eyes.

Oh man, Dirk! What a creep. I'm sure he'll have some excuse (after all, he does seem to really appreciate Shadee, and I like him in that he is a decent guy, if a complete doofus). But argh, I can't believe he would let that happen! Stupid, stupid, stupid! What was he thinking?! If he truly valued/"loved" Shadee, then he wouldn't have let that happen. Poor Shadee, I'm betting she's going to have a terrible night!

On a happier note, fantastic pictures as always! I love the one with Holly, Sebastian, and Shadee walking off together, they look so natural, and not like manipulated computer characters! And seeing Holly drunk is too funny. :D I hope the poor girl takes care of herself and is careful!

I just read all 18 chapters and I've gotta say, this story is amazing! You've inspired me to make my own story. :beer:

Hey, guys, I'm back and I'm tired! :D Wow, two pages of responses to my latest update, I'm overwhelmed! :luff:

I would have liked to respond to each one of you individually, but that would take too much time, so I'm going to thank you all for the wondeful comments/ hateful comments for Dirk ;) Also, welcome to all the new readers! I hope you'll enjoy "your stay"! :)

I'm sorry that you all hate him, he realy was a good and honest boy, but Shadee was neglecting him totally and on top of that he was dead drunk when Marissa dragged him into the bed :D

Now for the custom content questions: the hair really is from exnem's site, as for the tuxes, Seb's is from the game and Dirk's, if I'm not mistaken, is from hnote.

Story ideas...hmmm...I don't exactly know what to say :confused: You can find ideas everywhere: walking down the street and witnessing a scene between lovers, a nice part from a movie/book that you change a little and add your own twists, stories you've heard from friends... I usually get my ideas from every day life. :D

I don't know for sure when I will be updating, seeing that I've just got back and school starts tomorrow with tests and the like (yuck). But I will do my best to not keep you all waiting too much ;)

Chapter 19, Part I

‘You f***ing jerk!!!’ Shadee never swore, but this was something she couldn’t control at the moment ‘You filthy, good for nothing, low b***ard!!! How could you?!? How could you do this to me?’

There was some rapid detangling and Dirk jumped quickly to his feet, still swaying slightly due to the effect of the alcohol he had drank.

‘Oh my God!’ he slapped himself with one hand, while he supported the weight of his body on the night table with the other ‘Shadee, I’m so sorry! I never meant to do this. It’s just that-’

‘You know what? Just save it! I don’t want to hear anything you want to say!’

The girl turned on her heel and slammed the door furiously, tears of anger and shame streaming down her face. It wasn’t like she loved him and felt betrayed by her true love. The fact that annoyed her most was the fact that he had cheated on her with Marissa. The door opened with a crash and a naked Dirk stumbled out of the room, with Marissa on his tail, trying to cover him up with a sheet.

‘Shadee! Please, don’t leave!’ he fell on his knees and made a few more steps forward with his hands clasped together ‘I LOVE YOU, SHADEE!’

The girl shook her head and turned to face the pleading man at her feet. She was quite puzzled to notice that he was crying. This definitely softened her a bit, but she didn’t say a think and just watched him through cruel, narrowed eyes.

‘This girl means NOTHING to me!’ he gestured back towards a dumbstruck, hurt Marissa ‘I don’t even remember her name! I swear to you, it was just sex! It’s you that I love, you’re the only person I have ever had these feeling for! Please, don’t leave me!’

Shadee kept her harsh appearance, but inside her a battle was started: she knew Dirk actually loved her, she had always known this but had been too deep into her own sentimental problems to give him any attention, she also knew that it was partly her fault that her boyfriend had cheated on her that night. But she also knew that that was the perfect timing to end her relationship with him once and for all. She had a reason, a very good one on top of that, and she could quit everything before Dirk could get even more involved. She had reached her decision.

‘It’s the end, Dirk.’ She said quietly, biting her bottom lip in a defeated way ‘I’ll never be able to forget what you did to me, I’ll never be able to forget the image of you on top of that – that – that w**re!’

For the final time, she turned around and started descending the stairs, oblivious to Dirk’s cries of despair and the fact that he was following her downstairs where everybody could witness the painful scene. Without turning back, Shadee went straight out through the tall, red doors and stopped. The cool air did very good to her heated face and seemed to clear her thoughts a little.

In the distance, she thought she could distinguish the outline of Sebastien’s rented car and headed towards it. She hadn’t counted on loosing her ride back home.

‘Hey, Seb.’ She greeted her friend who was daydreaming on the driver’s seat, his feet dangling out of the car. Spread all over the back seat, Holly was snoring loudly, filling the car with an unmistakable odor of alcohol.

‘Oh! Hi.’ Sebastien answered, caught off guard.

Shadee crawled on the seat next to him and simply said nothing for a few seconds, looking at the big villa, but not really seeing it.

She didn’t exactly feel in the mood of telling Sebastien what had happened between her and Dirk. Probably a few minutes later, but not just then…

‘Could you please give me a lift home?’ she didn’t even look at him while asking.

‘Yeah, sure. But we’ll have to get Holly home first. She’ll be better off in her own bed…’ he threw the sleeping girl a glance to see what she was doing, then closed the car’s door as soundless as he could ‘Buckle up. It’s not exactly the best car.’

‘So…um…what happened to Holly after you went out?’ Shadee tried to start a neutral conversation.

Seb turned the ignition key and shrugged ‘She puked in the grass then passed out in the back of the car. It’s better that she took all that alcohol out. She’s still gonna have a huge hangover in the morning nonetheless.’

He backed up into the street and started driving towards Holly’s house, down the street.

‘How about you and – and Dirk?’ he gulped ‘Why did you leave so early?’

‘Um…yeah…uh…’ Shadee had hoped he wouldn’t ask that question, but now that he had, she didn’t have an alternative ‘I found him with Marissa…you know… SEBASTIEN!’

The car stopped so abrupt that, had she not been wearing the seatbelt, she would have hit her head against the windshield.

Holly rolled back on the seat with a grunt and instantly fell back asleep.

‘That f***ing ba***rd!’

Sebastien opened the car door, sprinted out and started to run the short distance towards the villa so quickly that Shadee barely had time to recover from the shock.

Chapter 19, Part II


‘Seb, don’t go back there!’ Shadee took her seatbelt off as quick as she could and jumped out of the car after her friend. She tried to follow him after having slammed the door shut, but her dress had got caught. ‘D*mn it! Sebas-’

It was useless to call after him – he had already entered the house. Having finally released herself, Shadee followed him, trying not to sprain her ankle in her 10-centemeter heels.

She finally got to the entrance, panting and all sweaty, and fumbled on the handle, hardly managing to push the door open.

‘You-!’ the sound of a hard punch colliding with Dirk’s jaw met Shadee’s ears and she saw a big group of people gathered around her ex-boyfriend and Sebastien.

‘What was that for?!’ the young man rubbed the spot where the fist had hit him. As a response he got another blow in the opposite jaw. This led to a fierce struggle in which one couldn’t say whose foot was whose and whose fist was whose. No one seemed to want to put an end to it all, they simply enjoyed the show too much.

‘Stop! Right now!’ Shadee tried to create a path through the disgruntled crowd ‘Let me pass!’ she elbowed a particularly robust girl and got to the center of the circle. She was still unable to separate the fighting duo, afraid of becoming an accidental casualty of “war”. Random swear words floated angrily above the dust cloud while quite unpleasant sounds of kicks, punches, hair pulling and even biting made the enthusiast crowd cheer.

‘Please?!’ the girl’s faint, hopeless voice faded under a loud “ouch, you b***ard!”. They finally seemed to tire down and Shadee seized the opportunity to drag Sebastien away from Dirk. Without any words towards the disappointed mass of people, the girl helped him out of the building and back to the car.

‘Are you crazy?!?’ she shouted angrily after having pushed Seb a little too roughly into the driver’s seat ‘Do you wanna get yourself killed?’

‘Oh, c’mon!’ Sebastien gave her a wide grin, blood dripping from the corner of his mouth ‘That good-for-nothing son of a-’

Shadee rolled her eyes and grabbed his chin, assessing the damage that had been done to her friend’s face: a swollen lip, a black eye, some superficial scratches and a few minor bruises. Not too bad after a fight with quite a bulky football player.

‘You’re lucky you didn’t get any teeth broken.’ She sighed and let herself sack back on the other empty seat ‘Let’s just go before you get any other wise ideas…’

The rest of the way to Holly’s house was spent in grumpy silence. Shadee simply looked out the car’s window, without uttering a word and Sebastien was compelled to keep his mouth shut.

Had he crossed the line? He had only meant to revenge her, he knew perfectly well that the scumbag had no feelings for her, nor did he feel any remorse for what he had done. The mere thought made Sebastien angry all over again, he could barely restrain from turning round and returning to finish what he had started. Why did everything have to be so damn hard? Every time he wanted to do something noble, daring or simply had a plan for something, it all turned against him. He really was a hopeless case! Even his dearest, most recent plan had failed horribly.

‘Here we are.’ He observed quietly, pulling into the driveway of a small, cosy house with a pretty garden ‘From what I can remember Mrs Baker isn’t home today, so we’ll be able to hide this “event” from her.’

Shadee got out of the car and admired the surroundings. Strangely enough, she had never been to Holly’s house, nor to Sebastien’s, but at least the boy had a reason not to invite them over at his trailer to hang out.

‘It’s beautiful!’ she concluded, staring at the colorful, well-taken-care-of flowers ‘Mrs Baker must be an amazing woman, taking care of the house, earning money and raising a wonderful daughter all by herself.’

Holly didn’t have a father, she had never actually met him as he had left her mother pregnant and ran for it, never showing his face again. It may have been the scary thought of taking responsibility for his actions, or maybe it was simply because he didn’t love his girlfriend enough. The fact remains that, at the age of 18, Emilia Baker was all on her own, pregnant in five months and living on the streets. She had risen above her conditions though, being an ambitious, hard-working person and earned enough money to have a decent life.

Shadee jumped over the flowerbed, walked down the perfect-cut, bright green lawn and climbed the few stairs to the pretty porch.

‘Need help carrying her?’ she turned back to Sebastien and watched him waddle to the house.

‘No problem!’ he panted, walking through the now wide opened window. He walked through the dark a few meters, then climbed a modern set of stairs to the next floor ‘Her room is upstairs.’

‘Oh.’ Shadee raised a brow ‘You seem to know your way around the house pretty well!’

Ignoring the sarcastic remark, the boy walked up the last two steps and hurried over to Holly’s bed where he gently placed his sleeping friend, grateful to have gotten rid of the weight.

‘There you go!’ he whispered and covered Holly with a light blanket ‘You’re gonna be okay now, just a small headache in the morning, but you’ll get over that!’

‘I don’t think she can hear you; she’s sleeping!’ Shadee snapped, unable to contain herself at the sight of Sebastien getting so cuddly with Holly.

‘Can’t you get over this already?!’ Seb snapped back, trying not to raise his voice above a heated whisper ‘I was just trying to revenge you! I didn’t mean to upset you! You know what you’re doing? You’re defending him! After all he has done to you, you’re defending him!’ he shook his head angrily, turned to Holly one more time to give her a quick kiss on the forehead, then headed back for the stairs, without even looking at Shadee.

The girl remained for a few more moments on the spot, listening to Sebastien leave the house. He had kissed her! He had given Holly a kiss on the forehead! Did that mean what she thought it meant? Were they…together? Were they…an item now? What a stupid boy Sebastien was, she hadn’t snapped at him because of the “Dirk” incident!

Two fat tears made their way down the girl’s cheeks, tickling her chin unpleasantly.

Shaking her head, and wiping her face, Shadee walked downstairs too, locked the door and hid the key in the flowerpot standing on the porch.

‘What took you so long?!’

She shrugged and sat down silently. Sebastien stuck the ignition key roughly and directed his hand towards the gear stick, when a soft touch made him start.

‘I’m sorry.’

‘Why are you crying, Shadee?’

‘I-I’m not!’ the girl rubbed her eyes energetically, trying to stop the flow ‘I just-I wanted to- I know this is the worst timing in the world and I should have told you sooner - much sooner – but I only just realised and there’s also Holly and that makes me a very bad person and I know-I should better keep my mouth shut right now, but it’s hard, watching you and seeing how she-I cannot go on like this-I really want to stop, but I can’t and it’s hard and it’s simply-it’s eating my soul and -’

Pure heaven, the most wonderful feeling she had ever felt, no matter how many times she would have seen this in books, no matter how many times she would have read a description of it in corny romance novels, nothing could have prepared her for Sebastien’s soft, sensual kiss. Nothing in the whole world mattered any more, just that the kiss lasted for ever. But it didn’t.

Opening her eyes as slow as she could, Shadee found herself feeling guilty as she had never felt before.

‘We shouldn’t have done this!’ she screeched nervously, shaking her head ‘No! I knew I should have kept it a secret, taken it to the grave and let you and Holly be happy together!’

‘It’s okay!’ Sebastien tried to calm her down ‘You don’t have to-’

‘No! It’s not okay! I shouldn’t have done this! I betrayed Holly, I hurt her, I-I have to go!’

Before she could dash out of the car, Seb grabbed her wrist tightly and pulled her back into her seat ‘Sit and just listen to me! Calm down! You don’t have to worry yourself about anything! This whole thing was part of a plan, I plan I had schemed a while ago!’

‘Let me talk and you’ll have your answers! I fell in love with you, Shadee! I fell madly in love with you in 9th grade! You were the only one in that class that ever looked at me, the only one that cared! I didn’t want to, believe me I didn’t want to get attached to anyone, but you were the one that changed my life for ever! Unfortunately, you only saw me as a friend and, while my love for you grew with each day, you were still not interested in anything romantic with me! I was about to give everything up and just leave everything as it was, even though Holly told me to continue fighting for you.’ Seb took a deep breath ‘But then, I had an idea! One last idea to be sure that you really didn’t love me. I asked Holly to pretend to have a crush on me and tell you everything, say how wonderful she thinks I am, how she’d like to spend the rest of her life next to me. If this didn’t make you jealous or moved you in any way, it was my cue to get over the whole thing. But you did seem to change! Sometimes it was obvious, sometimes you acted like you didn’t care, but it gave me hope! And here I am now! Before you ask a gain, the answer is no, Holly has never had a thing for me and I’ve never had a thing for her, even though she’s a wonderful girl!’

Shadee opened her mouth to say something, then closed it back. Everything hit her like a truck on an open highway. The meaningful looks and had spotted between her two friends, all the things that seemed to contradict each other, Holly’s exaggerated love words…and Sebastien all to herself! Without any feelings of guilt, without any hiding and secrets! Everything was now in the open! Finally, relief!


Ahem...first of all, sorry to all Holly/Sebastien "shippers", it was never meant to be a relationship between those two. But Holly doesn't get hurt in this thing, so it's okay, isn't it? :egg

Oh my god! How did I only just see this?! *squeal* Hooray for Shadee and Sebastian! *dances* Whee, I can hardly contain my excitement! Wow! I can hardly get out an intelligent sentence! Oooh! I was hoping for Shadee/Seb (just because Seb is so aorable and honorable!), but I was worried about Holly, and now it turns up that there was no issue at all! Holly's such a good friend to take on such a huge role of appearing to be completely starstruck on Seb and know that Shadee might get mad at her, and just for the greater good of her friends getting together! I'm glad Holly's not getting hurt!

On writing and pictures - first off, really nicely done! I loved how the first part of part two showed that instant of Seb's own thinking, and how he felt about the whole thing. It made the situation incredibly intruiging - what was the plan that had failed? Well, I thought that was nice... And then how it wraped up made so much sense (now I understand the "look" between Holly and Seb!) The pictures were all fantastic as well - your pictures in the car were really well done, I imagine it's hard to get pictures in such a small space, but you managed to get a ton of pictures done in there! Oooh, that second to last picture of Seb looking really nervous and earnest is too sweet. Did you know you build incredible houses? :giggler: Holly's is amazing!

About the individual response I once saw this on a thread for another story around here to which I had given feedback and I felt really good knowing that my comment had been read and really paid attention to, so I wanted to share the feeling with my readers. ;) My graphics card isn't all that great, it's an average one, but i sharpen the pics up in photoshop to give them more of a...umm...crispy effect :) Thanks again fo the compliments, you're really nice!

It's a good idea, responding to everyone individually. I'll have to remember that whenever I do another story. I kinda tried to, but didn't always remember to answer individually like that. :doh

I guess my graphics card is completely awful, because when I sharpen my screenshots in photoshop, they look even worse. Then again, maybe it's something else to do with my very very old computer. lol
