Guys I feel so bad! :( I should have updated a whole lot sooner, but I got caught up with school and all and didn't have time to complete the chapter.

But now I finished writing it, but cannot update due to the fact that my game crashes when I try to load the lot and I cannot take the pics...

I put up a thread on MTS2 asking for help with this. Hopefully everything will turn out okay.

I'm sorry cory! I had that happening a while back, and it was reallly incredibly frusturating, I kept having to drop out of contests and stuff and couldn't play for a long time... I hope your problem gets fixed! (I had to end up getting a new computer, as my laptop just couldn't hold the game! And now my poor baby ister's stuck with a game that crashes...)

Chapter 20

‘Family reunion?!? But grandma…’

Shadee groaned loudly and stared at her feet. She really disliked family reunions just because she had more relatives than she could handle and cousins of all ages, even unborn ones. They were all loud and cheerful, always getting in her way when she wanted to swiftly leave the room and lock herself up in her quiet dormitory.

‘You’re going off to college tomorrow! Do you expect us to just sit around and do nothing to celebrate that or say goodbye? You won’t see us for a few years…Okay apart from your free time when you’ll probably pay us a visit.’ Gypsy crossed her arm and measured her almost adult granddaughter from head to foot. When had the summer holidays gone by? Just yesterday she had come from her prom, all flushed and happy. ‘If it makes you more comfortable, you could invite Sebastien. He seems to be quite a down-to-earth young man.’

Shadee’s head shot upwards and a big grin spread across her face.

‘Really? I’m gonna go give him a call then!’ she rushed up the stairs to her room without protesting any more and grandma Gypsy returned to the kitchen where she was cooking all kinds of delicious meals for that evening.

The bell rang and Shadee darted at the door. Despite the horrible racket in the living room, she had been intently listening for any sounds that could announce the arrival of her boyfriend. She checked her image quickly in a near-by window before letting Sebastien in.

‘Hey!’ she beamed and gave him a quick and playful peck on the cheek, suddenly realising that the whole room had become unusually quiet. She gulped down and turned around, facing the others in the room and grinned uneasily ‘Um…everyone…this is my boyfriend, Sebastien! Sebastien, you know Caleb, grandma and grandpa, right? The others are my aunts, Alillee and Onasis with their husbands and kids, my uncle Zenyth and his wife Brigitte.’

Sebastien nodded and smiled at the huge reunion. He had quite a difficulty keeping in mind all their names, seeing they were quite unusual. Shadee seemed to know what he was thinking, as she added barely audibly ‘My grandma has a knack for unique names!’

The buzz seemed to grow after the novelty had worn off and they were all soon seated at a big table, chatting away loudly.

‘So, young man’ Gypsy turned to Seb ‘I heard you chose med school. That’s quite a high ambition and not everyone can succeed…’

‘I’ve always been interested in the human body.’ The boy looked Gypsy in the eyes ‘It’s something that I like and, on top of that I can also be close to Shadee during college with her having chosen arts and all. The dorms are in the same building.’

The old lady nodded and smiled friendly ‘I’m really content about that, to be honest. I believe I can trust you to protect her and make her happy.’ There was a brief moment in which they made eye contact and Sebastien thought he could see a flame burning in Gypsy’s eyes; it gave him a distinct feeling that she resembled a lioness defending her cubs and the words “or else” came him to mind, even though no one had pronounced them.

‘You can be sure of that!’ he answered back and didn’t avoid her gaze. Everything went back to normal in an instant.

‘This salmon is great, gran!’

‘Why, thank you dear!’

‘I like the turkey!’

‘Granny, the lobster looks scary!’

The kids were quite impressed by the wonderful feast their grandmother had prepared. They kept bickering over which dish was more delicious, until desert came - they all declared banana split “the bestest”.

[i]’It’s not so bad after all…’ Shadee smiled looking around the big table and munching away at a particularly stiff piece of banana. She was leaving home, after having got used to being there she was once again moving away, leaving behind people that she loved.

Everyone was so loud but, having drifted off into her own dream world, the girl couldn’t hear a word that was being said. She remembered her parents, her siblings, all gathered round a table one cold winter evening many, many years ago – or so it seemed to her. For a brief, selfish moment she wished her parents were alive, sitting there instead of one of her aunts or uncle. She chased the thought away. If a more powerful, supreme being had meant it for her to be that way, she had to accept her fate and learn to deal with it. In the end, after all the twists and turns she had actually received a prize – Sebastien.

‘Shadee, honey, please help Marcus take the dishes away!’

‘Umm? Oh, yeah, gran!’

The evening ended in a pleasant gathering in front of the TV, watching some slushy romantic comedy. Everyone headed for their homes eventually, after shedding a few “I’ll miss you” tears and repeatedly hugging Shadee. Even Shadee’s grandpa stood up from his wheelchair for a few minutes, seeing his children and grandchildren out.

Not long afterwards, the grandparents headed for their room and wished Shadee a good night. The girl was about to do the same when she noticed o a dark figure sitting on the swing outside. It was Caleb.

Shadee opened the front door as soundless as possible and approached the little boy.

‘Caleb? What’s wrong?’ she leaned in to see his face better, but there was silence for a few moments.

‘Am I a horrible boy?’ he looked up and stared sadly into Shadee’s eyes.

The girl was taken aback by his unexpected question and smiled relieved. She had thought her “uncle” had a more serious reason to be upset.

‘Of course not! You’re wonderful, one of the best things that ever happened to me, grandma and grandpa! Are you serious?’

‘I thought everyone hated me…’ Caleb answered thoughtfully ‘You’re all leaving me. First Fiona, now you!’

‘I’m not leaving for ever, carrot top!’ she ruffled his hair playfully and wiped off the tears from the corners of his eyes ‘It’s just for a few months, then I’ll come to visit on holidays and during weekends. And I don’t think Fiona’s leaving you-’

‘Yes she is! She’s moving out of town with her parents! I’m never going to see her again!’

There was another moment of silence in which Shadee watched a few tears roll down the boy’s cheeks. ‘Oh…I didn’t know that… I’m – I’m really sorry for you-’

She didn’t get to finish her sentence because the boy had pulled her into a tight hug, damping her white blouse. But it didn’t matter to her. Even though Shadee tried to fight against them, tears made their way down her chin, blurring her view and choking her.

‘I love you so much, Shadee!’ Caleb’s muffled voice whispered and the boy dug his face even deeper into her belly.

‘I love you too, Cae!’

They spent a few good minutes in the front yard, hugging and crying like mad people, then finally tired down and retreated to their rooms. The girl packed the rest of her stuff into the second huge luggage and went to bed, unable to fall asleep for hours on end.

Ooh, I've been behind on my reading! Cory, thank you for another fantastic update! I loved seeing Seb and Gypsy's personalities collide - they both are very strong chracters, and it was fun to see Seb react so well and boldly with her! You did a really nice job with the group shots in this scene, they must have been incredibly difficult!

Poor Caleb! Why must he be so adorable and innocent? That was such a sweet ending to the chapter!

Chapter 21

I know, it’s hard! College takes up four years of your life, but I can honestly say the first two were absolutely fantastic!!!

I settled in quite fine on campus. I’ve got a charming room with all the essentials.

At first, I also had a dorm mate – a chick called Katie, but because her boyfriend shared a room with Sebastien, we kinda switched. Yeah, we knew we weren’t supposed to do that, but no one actually made sure that we didn’t break the rule, so… IT HAPPENED!

My first time during the second month of freshman year. I will never forget those moments, even though they weren’t really what I had imagined. It was quite spontaneous actually! No candles or rose petals, but a lot of romantic caresses and hugs. Sebastien was very gentle and sweet, it made me love him even more – we really took our relationship to the next level.

I’m also coping quite well with my art major. The classes are sometimes long and hard, but I think I’m getting by fine. Hopefully, I will manage to become a renowned artist some day, if I put enough passion into my works.

He didn’t learn too much during highschool, but he now seems to have sprouted wings! He studies like mad, but that’s quite understandable, as he has chosen one of the hardest majors: biology. He sits in front of his thick books day in, day out; I sometimes just sit there and watch him – he looks so absorbed into his own little world.

Ever since he got away from his father he’s like a new person, no longer stressed or worried, he smiles a lot. But I do understand what’s going on in his heart, I believe he still cares about his brute of a father after all he did to him. Sebastien doesn’t know that I know, but he keeps calling his father every few days. They don’t speak, Seb just hangs up when he answers – I think he just wants to make sure he’s alright.

I’m really sorry that she didn’t come to the same university like me and Seb, but from what she’s told me everything is fine with her too. She’s majoring in economics. People in college are far less mean - everyone seems to be minding their own business. She’s made friends with this girl, Carrie Nichols, her dorm mate.

They get along really well, even though they’ve got opposed personalities. Carrie’s more of a wild child. Holly’s love life has blossomed as well: she’s met a wonderful guy who’s training to become a cop – he eats a lot of doughnuts!

A loud buzz suddenly interrupted the peace of the night. The cell phone vibrated its way towards the edge of the end table, menacing to fall off at any second.

‘Who the heck is calling at this hour?!?’ Shadee grumbled, still unsure whether she was sleeping or awake.

Stretching a hand, she groped around the table, trying to find the source of noise. Sebastien grunted next to her, then turned on the other side.

‘Yeah?’ Shadee tried to stifle a yawn while listening to the voice at the other end of the line ‘Grandma, are you okay? … Take it easy and just- … Is everyone okay?... Just try to calm down and tell me what happened!’

With a soft thud the cell phone slid out of the girl’s hand, landing on the wooden floor.

The words of the priest seemed to die away as Shadee’s eyes blurred with tears. She knew perfectly well this had been coming, she had thought of it and dreaded it, but in no case had she really been prepared to deal with the death of another person dear to her.

Her grandfather had been like a second parent to her. She had got used to seeing him every day – as of late only during the holidays. She hadn’t even said a proper goodbye to him and she was now no longer able to do it – he was gone, probably in Heaven to meet with his son and grandchildren – Shadee’s family.

By far, the most affected of them all was Gypsy. She just stared at the closed shiny, black coffin without blinking.

Her eyes were red and swollen, but tears refused to flow. She had probably cried every drop of water left in her body. Her withered hand pressed Caleb’s small body to hers, as if he was everything she had left. She suddenly looked old, as if twenty years had passed in only one week.

With slow, almost lazy movements, the casket was lowered inside the grave. Caleb detached himself from his adoptive mother and, shaking slightly, approached the opening in the ground with a beautiful bunch of flowers in his hand. It was a heart-breaking sight.

The poor ten-year-old boy hadn’t had any luck throughout his life: first being put up for adoption, making good friends and loosing them, then the person he had known as a father for the past six years dieing.

Caleb’s whole body began to shake as he hid his face in Gypsy’s belly, letting his emotions loose.

Two men with shovels started to cover the casket with dirt, hiding its image forever in the depths of the ground. Everyone taking part in the gathering stared at the coffin; it was the last goodbye to a wonderful person, husband, father and grandfather.

Aww! :( That's so sad. Poor Caleb & Gypsy! They have a hard time ahead of them. And Shadee didn't even get a chance to say goodbye.. I really feel for her, she's had a hard life already, loosing a lot of the people she loves, and now her grandfather too! That's so sad!

But, as always, very well written chapter and you did an amazing job on the scenery. It's so beautiful, you almost feel that you are standing right there watching the story "live"!

Chapter 23

Even though Menas’s death had been a hard blow for the whole Evans family, life went on with its natural course. Still, things were very different from the way they used to be: Gypsy was no longer cheerful and upbeat, as much as she tried to hide that for Caleb’s sake, and the boy himself always had a sad, melancholic air about him.

They both felt lonely in the huge mansion that had once been full to the brim with children.

Shadee had returned to college with Sebastien and had actually managed to get over her grandpa’s death in a few months.

She continued working harder and harder for her major, her boyfriend as well, as all the teachers kept giving them more and more assignments.

They decided to postpone the wedding though until they finished college and managed to get themselves a house of their own. Nonetheless, they announced their engagement to all their friends and relatives.

In this manner another two long years passed and graduation finally loomed around the corner. The couple both had top grades and were about to finish college with a “Magna C*m Laude” diploma for Shadee and a “Summa C*m Laude” for Sebastien.

After a grand graduation, with many words of praise for the outstanding student Sebastien Bronfield, it was time to say goodbye to the crazy college years and finally settle down as adults and return to their hometown.

So, I’ve been away from home for a few days and didn’t have time to let you know. But I’m okay, safe and sound, just a little sleepy! ;)

Now, on to a few questions asked: I wanted to finish quickly with college because, first of all I used the Maxis made dorms which were ugly and then I hadn’t actually thought of too many things to happen during her college years. But this doesn’t mean the story is nearing its end. I’ve still got a few tricks up my sleeve for adulthood :)

You will also see more of Holly in the near future. Like pinkstar said, she will be Shadee’s neighbour.

Chapter 24

The yellow taxi pulled up in front of the huge, oh-so-familiar mansion belonging to Shadee’s grandmother. Even though nothing gave it away, the house’s air seemed to have changed considerably over the past few years, becoming a little gloom and not as warm as it used to be.

Without rushing, Sebastien paid the taxi driver, then proceeded to take out the luggage from the trunk.

‘Okay…you ready?’ Shadee smiled and shook her head in the direction of the front door.

Hardly had the young woman pushed open the door, that a big, red headed someone burst out of the house and almost made her fall backwards with the strength of his bounce.

‘Caleb!’ Shadee gasped for air, stretching a hand to ruffle the teenager’s head ‘Wow! Look at you! Look how tall you got!’

She took a step backwards to eye him carefully from head to foot. The almost fourteen year-old boy was grinning widely at his beloved “niece”. It was incredible how he had grown over the past months since they had last seen each other.

‘Shadee! Seb! I missed you guys!’ Caleb’s voice was significantly deeper and manlier ‘Grandma told me you two are going to stay here until you find a place of your own. That’s going to be so great!’

They all entered the living room. The place hadn’t actually changed at all. A wonderful smell drafted from the kitchen, making Shadee’s stomach grumble loudly.

‘Surprise!’ Shadee gave her grandmother a peck on the cheek and squeezed her tightly before examining her as well.

Comparing to Caleb who had literarily bloomed, Gypsy had withered considerably. It was the same change that had destroyed Menas at the early stages of his illness: deep wrinkles creasing her once smooth face, hair thinner and much whiter than the last time. Her bright green eyes were still warm and loving though, making Shadee feel welcome after all.

‘Ah, I’m glad to see you two love birds have arrived safe and sound.’ the old lady smiled and gave them both a big hug ‘I’m almost finished with dinner, so just give me a few minutes. You’ve got enough time to take a shower and freshen up.’

They carried their suitcases upstairs to Shadee’s old room and were delighted to feel the wonderful smell of freshly changed sheets and general cleanliness. Sebastien took out some clean clothes out of his bag and rushed to the bathroom, leaving Shadee to enjoy the return to her home.

The departure from her room seemed so distant, so many things had happened in-between; but being there at that moment made her feel as if only a few seconds had passed.

Dinner was spent in a very comfortable manner. Gypsy inquired about their plans for the future and offered to give them the necessary money for purchasing a house, but they both refused.

‘I really couldn’t do that, Mrs. Evans!’ Sebastien shook his head ‘Me and Shadee talked about this several times and we’ve got a very clear plan of what to do.’

‘Nonsense! I’ve got enough money to live one hundred years from now without any problems! But I can see you’re too stubborn to accept that. I insist though that you accept this offer of mine: promise to let me borrow you the money for the house once you find a suitable one and you’ll give it back to me in monthly rates, or something similar.’

Shadee smiled and nodded, giving Sebastien’s hand a tight, loving squeeze over the table.

‘In the meantime, you are forbidden to leave the house!’ Gypsy winked, giving both Seb and Shadee another plateful of food.

Having Shadee and Sebastien in the house put Gypsy in a considerably better mood. The same could have been said about Caleb, who now had a male companion to go to different matches to, talk about girls and sports and get some valuable pieces of advice from. This usually left Shadee and her grandmother alone at home, baking cookies and sharing memories.

It was one of those days when both of them had remained home alone, that Gypsy asked Shadee to join her for a cup of coffee and a chit chat. She didn’t seem to be in too much of a good mood.

‘I’ve been thinking about selling the house.’ She started, turning the cup in her hands without drinking from it ‘For Caleb’s sake, I mean. I just know he hates the place, even if he doesn’t say it. Every single corner reminds him of his father. So I thought I should sell it and move to a quieter place, in the country perhaps, to a small, cosy house with an orchard… It would be so much better for him! But I can’t! I just can’t leave this house behind!’

Shadee didn’t say anything. She knew her grandmother didn’t need her to talk, just listen to what she had to say.

‘I feel so selfish! As a mother, I should be doing what is best for my child, but I can’t! It’s filled with memories, not only sad ones, but also the happy memories of his childhood, of your childhood, of the early years of my marriage…’ she stopped again and took a hearty sip of hot coffee ‘Shadee, honey, I’d like you to promise me something!’

‘Sure, go ahead, Gran!’

‘Please promise you will sell the house and take Caleb with you after I die!’

Shadee’s eyes widened and she stared at her grandmother, as if the possibility of her dying was the most improbable thing.

‘Oh – okay. But that won’t happen too soon!’ her expression softened ‘You’re healthy and look at leat ten years younger!’

That had been a lie, but she couldn’t actually say the truth when the old woman was so depressed and blue.

‘You know as well as I do that I don’t have much time left.’ Gyspy smiled, not looking her granddaughter in the eyes ‘Not because I am sick or anything, but because of this here.’ She touched her chest softly, hinting at her broken heart.
