So...let me think a little and reread some of the parts: when Caleb was adopted he was about 4-5 yrs. At first, I have to admit I had planned for him to be younger, so there may still be a few incompatibilities with some parts of certain chapters. This makes him 10-11 yrs younger than Shadee, which means that he is somewhere between 13-14 yrs old. This is the thing I usually keep in mind ;)

The other thing with the graduation: when I said the thing along the lines of "two years had passed in this manner..." I meant that two years had passed since Menas' death and then I described the most important events that had happened in the meantime. :)

Sorry for being so inexplicit in my writing, I sometimes forget to put my thoughts into words in a logical manner :giggler: I hope everything is clearer now!

Chapter 25

Two weeks after having come back to their hometown, Sebastien found himself a job at the local hospital as an intern.

The hours were long, the work hard and the pay not high enough, but it was still worth it as he was able to do what he enjoyed. Shadee, on the other hand, preferred to work at home, painting in the peace and quiet of her room.

They also started visiting different houses that were for sale with the help of their trustworthy estate agent Phil, but didn’t exactly manage to find something to their taste. They continued to live at Gypsy’s house well into the summer.

‘Seb.’

It was a lazy late August afternoon and Shadee was quickly running up the stairs to hers and Sebastien’s room. She was wearing a cute bathing suit and water was still dripping from her hair, all over the wooden steps and the carpet.

‘Seb –’ She stopped for a few moments to catch her breath, then continued ‘We’ve got to go to the supermarket! I was swimming around in the pool when I thought about trying out to cook something nice for this evening! Something sweet!’

Sebastien yawned widely and put his anatomy book down ‘If we really have to…’

He trudged to the closet and rummaged around in search for some clean clothes, while Shadee ushered him to hurry up. She rubbed her hair with a white towel, chose a skimpy outfit perfect for the hot summer day and applied the minimum amount of make-up.

‘Still not ready?’ she shook her head energetically at the sight of a still undressed Sebastien ‘You know…I wanna make your favorite – strawberry tart!’ with a wide grin, the young woman watched her boyfriend suddenly move at the speed of lighting.

Ten minutes later the couple was wandering around the nearest supermarket, hunting down the needed ingredients.

They were a little confused about the recipe, not having actually made a list of everything necessary for the fruit tart.

‘So…I remember we needed flower, eggs, vanilla essence and…umm…’

‘Milk, maybe?’ Sebastien suggested hopefully, but Shadee shook her head, biting her bottom lip, as if to punish herself for having forgotten everything.

‘I hate it when I’m all confused about things!’ she pouted ‘What kind of wife am I going to be for you, Seb? I can’t even remember the ingredients for a simple cake recipe.’

The man smiled and just hugged her lovingly; an answer was superfluous. Shadee’s face suddenly lighted up with joy.

She rushed behind a corner and made her way towards the fresh fruit aisle, humming loudly and not exactly paying attention to things around her. Turning yet another corner, she almost collided with a blond, slightly balding, beer-bellied man.

‘Oh, so sorry! Didn’t see you!’ the young woman excused herself and wanted to resume her search for strawberries, when the man stopped her.

‘Hey there, pretty babe! Wouldn’t have minded if you did actually bump into me…you could bump into me aaaanytime you wanted…’ he licked his lips seductively and his bright blue eyes wandered from Shadee’s slender calves, up to her round breasts, where they rested greedily and full of desire.

’What a creep!’ she shuddered inside and prepared to leave again, when a somewhat familiar female voice grumbled loudly.

‘Would you stop hitting on other women! At least when I’m there with you, you b@stard!’

Shadee spun round and gapped in awe at the well-rounded woman, having a row with her seemingly unfaithful husband. She knew her, she knew her quite well, but she just couldn’t believe her eyes.

‘You always do this!’ the woman barked angrily, hitting her spouse with her cheap, fake designer purse ‘The moment you see a pretty woman you start drooling all over her, as if she would even look at you, you buffoon! Three years of marriage! Just three and you already started to run around after other chicks! Don’t you even care about the kids?’

She stopped for a few moments, slashing him open with her fiercely narrowed eyes then continued her tirade, oblivious to the painfulness of the situation.

‘I should have never married you! My daddy should have never trusted your idiot of a father! I would still be living in my million dollar villa had it not been for your father’s stupid business idea! It’s only his fault! And your fault! You filthy scumb@g!’

She gave him one more purse hit over the head before Shadee regained her use of voice.

‘Regina? Brandon?’ she looked from one face to another, unable to believe her eyes. It just didn’t seem possible for these two to be the same she had known in highschool.

An icy stare that could freeze up an ocean. The once gorgeous and popular Regina stood there in her baggy, second-hand clothes which tried to cover her flab, looking worse than ever and having married a loser of a guy who had also proved to be a skirt-chasing drunkard. Oh, the irony!

Not loosing a moment, she grabbed the giddy Brandon by the sleeve and dragged him towards the exit, without bothering to say anything to Shadee.

‘You forgot to give me your number!’ was the last thing she heard before Regina ushered him briskly out of the supermarket.

‘Well…that really was an interesting encounter!’ Sebastien emerged chuckling from behind a stand, having followed the whole scene ‘Who would have thought they’d end up like this?’

Both him and Shadee couldn’t help but laugh at the funny trick fate had played them. A nice way to end a rather enjoyable summer day.

‘Someone get that phone already! It’s driving me nuts!’ Shadee got up from the couch, waking up from a short nap.

She hadn’t been too well for the last few days. She had terrible stomach aches, her head hurt constantly and she kept throwing up at the worst of times.

‘I got it, hun!’ Sebastien shouted from the second floor, then disappeared with the phone in the bedroom.

‘I think I’m going to be sick again…’ Shadee closed her eyes and tried to imagine someplace nice and quiet. Even though she knew she was being selfish, she had become quite desperate to move out of her grandmother’s house. It wasn’t that Gypsy or Caleb bothered her, not even in the least, but she just felt the urge of having a place of her own, where she could just be alone with Seb, get some peace and quiet. And maybe a nap without being woken up. The two concepts contradicted each other, but Shadee felt she was grown-up, ready to start a life of her own. She wanted to be independent and finally start a family with her fiancé. The place simply chocked her, she felt trapped between the walls of a house she had dearly loved.

She wiped the beads of sweat that had taken shape on her forehead and suddenly felt the familiar knot in her throat.

‘Oh, God!’

Without loosing a second, she rushed up the stairs before collapsing in front to the toilet and once again throwing up. She really hated being sick!

‘Honey, are you okay?’ Sebastien called worriedly from the other side of the door.

‘I’m better now.’ Shadee answered faintly and let the water run for a few seconds in order to be cold and refreshing before washing her whole face.

‘Listen, I’ve got some good news!’ her fiancé continued on a brighter note ‘It was Phil on the phone. He thinks he’s finally found something that we might like. He wanted to take us there today ‘cause there are a few other customers that are interested in buying it. So…are you up for a little “sightseeing”?’

‘Yeah, sure!’ she emerged from the bathroom smiling as wide as she could ‘Let me just get ready, okay?’

Sebastien looked at her for a few moments, furrowing his brow ‘You look so pale... Are you sure you’re alright?’

‘A little sick, but don’t worry! It can’t be something serious, can it?’

Seb’s facial expression changed suddenly ‘You know…this whole illness of yours has got me thinking…’ he stopped and looked at her again, eyes widening with the excitement of a small boy who is about to receive candy ‘Head aches, dizziness, sickness…’

‘You think…’ Shadee began, but didn’t end the sentence. She once again experienced the tingling sensation in the pit of her stomach, the butterflies of excitement ‘It can’t be! I’ve taken the pills regularly, I didn’t forget…’

The young man watched her as if mesmerized. The contemplation of becoming a father seemed to please him to no limits.

‘A baby…’ he whispered and a wide grin spread across his face ‘A baby! A baby!’ he started jumping around his girlfriend in a frantic dance.

‘Sebastien! Shush!’ Shadee smiled, trying to quiet him down ‘We can’t be sure of anything. Don’t get too worked up!’

‘Ok then. Let’s run some tests! We’ll go see the house, then straight to the hospital!’

They agreed on the plan, then soon left to see Phil. Sebastien was fidgety all the way to the meeting point. He kept stroking his future wife’s hand, grinning to himself and generally not paying attention to the road.

‘There you are!’ Phil boomed in his usual loud tone, giving Seb a pat on the back and kissing Shadee’s hand. He was a friendly man in his thirties, particularly good at his job who had become a familiar face in the couple’s life, helping them out through their home-hunt ‘You are definitely gonna love this! It’s got your names written all over it! The first moment I saw this beauty…I just knew I had my man for it. And it’s about time you found something! I am quite getting sick of you two!’ he started to laugh loudly at his own joke ‘You can leave the car here. The house is a only a ten-minute walk away!’

The surrounding area was astoundingly beautiful: neat houses with perfect gardens, quiet and inviting at the same time. It was simply the perfect neighbourhood for a young family.

Even from a remarkable distance, the house seemed to shine like a well polished diamond. It was a two story building, with beautiful red brick walls, a cosy porch and a nice white fence limiting the still bare yard.

‘It’s a brand new house, guys!’ Phil grinned, taking out an impressively big set of keys ‘Now…which one was it…’

Shadee threw Seb a meaningful look. She was already in love with it; the young man seemed to be feeling the same. He just didn’t want to show his enthusiasm yet.

‘The place seems a bit empty and deserted.’ He observed quietly.

‘You must be kidding, old man!’ the agent boomed again ‘Ah, here’s the little bugger… Now, let me show you the interior. Come, don’t be shy, you two!’

They found themselves in a spacious entrance hall that lead to a huge living room.

‘It’s exactly the way you like it! Big, very well lit, with a pretty door to the back yard… The toilet is in the far left corner, the kitchen is also here on the left and upstairs are the rest of the rooms. ‘Kay, follow me!’

They went up the well polished wooden staircase and arrived in another long hall with doors on each side.

‘So here, on the left is the toilet again and the master bedroom. On the right are three smaller rooms which you can arrange to your heart’s desire: more bedrooms, study or - ahem - a pretty little nursery…’ he paused and grinned at them. Shadee felt her cheeks blush a deep shade of scarlet and she instinctively put a hand on her belly.

‘You can go ahead and look inside each of these, my dears. You’ll see they’re all big enough and well-lit, just the way you like them.’ Phil winked, leading the now very excited couple into the nearest room, being sure that he had finally found his clients a house that was exactly to their taste.

After having seen and admired every single corner of their future home, Shadee and Sebastien arranged the last details of the purchase with their agent, then returned to their car, talking animatedly about each room’s design and purpose.

They went straight for the local hospital where Seb worked in order to investigate Shadee’s mysterious illness. The young woman had some blood samples taken and was promised to be contacted in 24 hours with the results.

Chapter 27

Sebastien skidded to a halt behind his future wife, just as she had finished the phone conversation.

He had been in the pool, just relaxing and swimming around when the distant, yet loud ring of the phone reached his ears. It could only be one thing! Without loosing a moment, he had jumped on the ladder and ran all the way inside, leaving small puddles on his way there.

‘Well?’ he asked excitedly, waiting for Shadee to respond ‘What did they say?’

The young woman was with the back to him, facing the wall and still holding the receiver in her hand. He couldn’t see her face, but he was sure he knew what the result was, until she turned around.

Shadee’s eyes were filled with tears, yet they hadn’t made their way down her cheeks yet. A distinct sad expression was on her face, but she tried to smile.

‘Honey, is everything alright?’ Sebastien just couldn’t shake off the feeling that something must have been wrong ‘Were the results okay?’

‘Yes, yes…’ she nodded and discreetly rubbed the tears from her eyes ‘Everything is fine. I’m not dieing or anything!’ she gave a small laugh that didn’t seem too genuine though ‘The results were negative. I’m not pregnant.’

The words seemed to hang in the air, creating a brick wall between the two. A few moments of silence followed in which they looked at each other. Then, at the same time, they spoke again.

‘Well, umm…I’m gonna go back to swimming…’

‘I think I’m gonna go upstairs and lie down a little…’

Shadee started to walk up the stairs and everything felt like in a dream, the daze and uncertainty surrounded her, her brain seemed foggy and the tears she had rubbed away from her eyes a few minutes before, came back flooding her whole face.

Sebastien still remained at the foot of the stairs for a while, watching her leave. He wanted to move, return to the pool filled with cool water. But he felt as though his feet had been tied up together, like a huge block of concrete kept him rooted on the spot.

Having reached her bedroom, the young woman let herself fall on the soft bed and buried her head in the pillow. Why was she feeling that way? She knew perfectly well that she wasn’t yet ready for a baby, she didn’t feel mature enough to take care of a small creature that depended wholly on her. And still, at the sound of the news she had felt her heart sink well below sea level. In only one day she had gone from panic to refusal to acceptance and then to sheer excitement. Who was she trying to kid? She really wanted to have a baby, she had already started to make plans inside her mind, how she would decorate one of the upstairs rooms of her new house into a lovely nursery, she had thought of names for the baby, she had imagined sunny Sundays spent in the park with Sebastien and a stroller, she had pictured holding a tiny infant in her arms and knowing it’s hers. And there was also Seb. He had been so excited at the thought he might become a father, how disappointed he must have felt. Who would have thought that a temporary stress induced sickness could wreck such emotional havoc in the small family…

It took only a few more days for Shadee to get better from her illness and almost a month for the couple to get over the disappointment. They succeeded to keep their mind off of things while working on their beautiful new house: painting the walls, choosing the parquet or carpet, buying the suitable furniture and arranging it as to fit into the rooms. But sure enough, everything was ready at the end of September. They simply couldn’t recognise the house with its beautiful finishing. They had also built a garage for their pretty car and planted some bushes, flowers and trees in their garden.

The back yard had been transformed into a vast terrace with a big, nice pool, a Jacuzzi and a grill.

Surprisingly enough, there were no tears when Shadee and Seb finally moved out of Gypsy’s house.

She was just happy to see them happy and it wasn’t like they were moving to another part of the world. They were just a few streets away and both the old lady and Caleb were welcome any time they wanted to pay them a visit.

Yet another few weeks and the couple had settled into their new house. The fact that Sebastien got promoted was an even bigger achievement for both of them and, on the career part, Shadee was considering opening up an art gallery of her own. But it was too soon after having spent a huge amount of money for their home.

It was a mild autumn afternoon and Shadee was just about to start working on a new painting in her “art room”.

Exactly when the young woman wanted to put the brush on the pure white canvas, the doorbell rang loud and distinct. Shadee sighed deeply and rubbed off the paint of her hands, looking at the hour on her cd-player. Half past four it couldn’t have been Caleb and Gypsy, they hadn’t announced them about anything and they never came without calling first.

‘Coming!’ she shouted, starting to descend the stairs.

Finally getting to the door, she had the most pleasant shock in a while, at the sight of her visitors.

‘Holly! And you must be Steve!’ Shadee smiled widely at the couple standing on her porch.

She hadn’t seen her friend in more than three years and hadn’t heard from her since they were still in college ‘Wow, what a surprise! Come in, you two!’

Shadee led them into the living room and invited them to sit down on her 3000$ sofa in front of the fireplace. She felt really ecstatic to see her old friend back. Holly looked very good, she was glowing, even though she seemed to have gained quite a few pounds since they had last seen each other

‘I missed you so much, Shadee!’ Holly grinned happily while giving her a tight hug ‘Look at you! You look gorgeous and look at this house!’

She took an appreciative look around the spacious room and finally sat down next to her boyfriend.

‘Let me just go fetch Seb, he’ll be thrilled to see you!’ Shadee hurried back to the second floor, returning in less than two minutes with Sebastien on her tail. He exchanged a few warm greetings with Holly, shook hands with Steve and they all sat down for a chit chat.

‘So, what have you been doing?’ Shadee asked, looking at the young couple ‘I kept calling your mother to see if you were back in town, but got the same answer every time. She must have gotten sick of me calling every few days.’

‘Well…’ Holly started, making it obvious that she was about to tell a long story ‘I kind of dreaded coming back in town without having had an unforgettable experience first. You know, they all say your college years are the wildest, when you do all kinds of things you’ve never done before, but for me it was as usual as always.’ She paused, throwing Steve a loving look ‘Of course, apart from meeting this one here! So, after graduation, I went to Steven and told him “I want to do something crazy! I refuse to settle down without having done something unusual”. You two know me, I’m not the whacky type of person, but what I did really was whacky!’

Shadee giggled, unable to imagine what whacky thing Holly could have done. Just then did she notice the shiny golden ring on both her friend’s finger and her lover’s.

She decided to keep quiet though. Chances were Holly was going to tell them everything anyway.

‘The two of us thought and thought for a few minutes. Our bags were packed, we had to leave the college premises, but we really didn’t want to return. So instead we took a taxi to the airport and chose the first flight away. This is how we got to Las Vegas!’ she started to laugh loudly at the faces Shadee and Seb had made ‘Without any plans, any scheming, we just got onto the plane and left. We stayed there as long as we could, seeing that we had quite a big sum of money from our scholarships. We visited the casinos, which by the way were really glamorous, but not really our type of thing! In the end, we decided to do another crazy thing and…’ she stretched out the hand with the ring ‘…we got married!’

There were a few moments of silence in which Sebastien and his fiancé digested the news.

‘Wow! You really did do something!’ Seb observed amusedly.

‘What bothers me’ Shadee pouted ‘is that you got married without me being there with you!’

‘Ah, well…we hadn’t thought about all this in advance’ Holly shrugged ‘But we didn’t really have any people invited. I didn’t even tell my mother until we got back, earlier today. She was actually a little upset at first, but she knew I never wanted a big wedding anyway!’

‘So, you’re a married woman now!’

‘Yep, Mrs Holly Rendell. I love the sound of that!’

‘Well, Mr and Mrs Rendell!’ Shadee got up from the couch ‘You do know you’ll have to stay for dinner! God knows when we’ll be having the chance to see you two again!’

She took a few steps in the direction of the hallway but was stopped after a few seconds by a very eager-to-help Holly. She had bolted up from her comfortable seat and sprinted the few meters to Shadee.

‘Let me give you a hand! So the boys can have a manly talk among themselves…’

She gave a small laugh and followed her friend inside the spotless kitchen, letting out a murmur of admiration that stroke Shadee’s ego.

Even though she had known Holly for quite some time, the period they had spent apart had made them feel a little estranged all, a sense of competitiveness rising up in them, each trying to outrun the other. In an effort to push the barrier between them away, Shadee gave her old friend another hearty hug, and smiled warmly.

‘Let’s get down to business, shall we?’ she grinned and walked over to the fridge, trying to decide which of the ingredients she could find there were most suitable for a fancy, yet quick meal.

A half an hour into their cooking, both young woman felt themselves warming up more and more to each other, thinking back at all the memories they shared together, be it sad or happy ones. In an impulse of sincerity and in the name of their old friendship, Holly blurted out:

‘Guess what? I didn’t know whether to mention this or not, but heck! You’re still my best friend!’ Shadee looked up at her enquiringly, leaving the fish in the oven to cook unattended’ I’m three months pregnant!’

Shadee’s mouth dropped open with shock and a glacial air seemed to fill her lungs at the sound of the news. She wanted to speak out, congratulate Holly on her future baby, but no sound came out. The wound of not having been pregnant herself were still fresh in her mind. She regained her composure a little in a few seconds and said all the right things that were to be sad. At least this could explain Holly’s few pounds extra, anyway!

‘Wow! Out of college, gone to Vegas, married and now pregnant!’ Shadee gave a long whistle, but could still feel the pang in her heart, that hadn’t subsided at all since first hearing the news.

‘Well, I can say I have everything I ever wanted.’ Holly nodded serenely, unaware of the struggle Shadee was going through.

Their talk was interrupted by a loud “ding” from the oven: the fish was ready.

The rest of the evening went by in a swirl of food and talk. Shadee went through it all like through a thick layer of fog, not really registering what was being spoken at the table and giving mechanic answers whenever addressed.

She kept throwing furtive glances at her friend’s belly. There, inside her, a baby was growing and developing. Despite herself, she felt envious and angry and would have given anything in the world for her to be in Holly’s place.

Later though, while lying wide awake in bed next to an already sleeping Sebastien, Shadee felt ashamed of herself.

Aaah :D I haven't read this story in forever (I didn't have internet for several months), so when I was able to use it again I hopped on and went searching for this right away ^-^ I was actually afraid I wouldn't be able to find it but I did, and rather easily. I was practically jumping up and down when I suspected Shadee might be pregnant. :o I just wanted to say, Cory, you're an amazing writer and I love your story. Your characters (especially Seb) are very lovable :3 I hope you have many, many future updates.

Ahh! How could I almost miss an update of this faboulous story? Guess that's what you get for being on holiday. ;) Well, Great chapter as always cory! :) I love that Holly is back for a visit and that she's preggers! I think that her baby will be a pretty little bundle of joy. Can't wait to see her/him. I hope that Shadee will get pregnant too, sometime... That would be so great.

Chapter 29

Life continued its natural course and Holly and Steve settled themselves back in town, living with Holly’s mother. The friendship between her and Shadee strengthened progressively, with the help of many days and evenings spent together. Her belly also got bigger by the day and soon it was no longer a question whether she had a few extra pounds or was actually pregnant.

Approximately six months after her return in town, Holly finally gave birth, but with a twist: she had a gorgeous pair of identical twin boys, whose godparents became Shadee and Sebastien.

Only four months after the birth of Martin and Adrian, Shadee and Sebastien finally had their dream wedding in a beautiful chapel in town. It wasn’t a very big affair, but it certainly was a day that wouldn’t be forgotten so easily.

Shadee’s whole family was there to witness the ceremony where she and Sebastien stood in the spotlight. It could have been said that Gypsy was the most anxious and nervous of them all. She fussed over every tiny detail and stressed herself so much that she was absolutely exhausted on the day of the wedding.

Shadee wasn’t as nervous as she had expected, but the walk down the aisle at the arm of her uncle Zenyth really quickened her heartbeat.

Everything seemed to happen in slow motion, all the sounds died away as she approached a grinning Sebastien in front of the altar.

The ceremony itself was quick – the priest’s speech, the vows,

The whole thing was over quite soon.

For the honeymoon, they went for only one week on a very beautiful and exotic holiday in the islands, returning with a perfect tan, but evenly empty pockets.

Not soon afterwards, tragedy stroke again in the form of Gypsy’s death. The whole family was devastated, but the one who suffered most was undoubtedly Caleb: Gypsy had been his mother, it had been only the two of them in the big mansion ever since Shadee had left and Menas had died.

He refused to talk to anybody but Shadee from the day Gypsy died and until the funeral and locked himself up in his room. Only the young woman was allowed to enter the dormitory, to bring him food or water.

After the funeral, Caleb returned from his room with all his bags packed and simply left the mansion for Shadee’s house without as much as looking behind.

It was a terrible ordeal and the whole family was sure that the teenaged boy would never be able to recover from the loss.

But in time everything gets washed away, the pain, the emptiness, the happiness, the joy …

Nooooo! Gypsy, you're gone forever. But at least she got to see her granddaughter get married and she did well to raise all those kids. It's really sad.

Well, Gypsy’s death had to occur at some point, no one lives for ever and it also adds realism to the story ;) I know I did her death really quick and short, but I had already gone into great detail when Menas died, so I thought I shouldn’t repeat the whole thing, if you know what I mean :D

amalina: If it makes you feel any better she’s still alive in game :giggler: Yep, it was very important to me for Gypsy to be there at Shadee’s wedding, it was as if she had only been living for this and then she was ready to move on :)

Christy: Gyspsy’s death was sad but there were two other happy events in the update to counterbalance the whole thing ;) As for the kiddies, I’ve no idea how they look all grown up, but I’ll make sure they’re identical, even if it means some tinkering in body shop!
