Okay, in a nutshell: Himitsu Kudasai is one of those very pretty songs that usually plays over a scene of insane carnage in an anime.(namely, the destruction of Megazone 23 in Megazone 32 Part Two) Other examples of this would be:

- Kom, Suesser Tod playing over the Third Impact in End of Evangelion
- Ai, Oboeteimasu ka(Do You Remember Love) playing over the climactic battle scene in the Macross movie.

In any case, it's kind of ironic, because on one hand, you have this beautiful song playing, and on the screen - carnage. O_o wth, Japan. wth?

And I meant to nutshell this, but... *shrug)

That was quite a turnpoint! It's hard to decide if I'm happy or sad. Holly's boys are adorable and I really like that she got twins. :)
Shadee and Sebastien's wedding are just gorgeous. They both look so beautiful, and Shadee's uncle is a knock-out too! How do you make such good looking sims? ;)
As I read through the chapter I got this jolly feeling inside that everything was going to be alright with Shadee and her family but then Gypsy died and I was so sad. Poor Caleb, now he's got no parents left and he's almost all alone. Thank god he's got Shadee and Sebastien, I really hope that they will take good care of him.

Great chapter though, the good things kind of outweighs the bad thing so it adds up nicely! :D I really love you pictures, you have a great eye for detail and it almost feels like you're right there watching as the story goes by! :)

Chapter 30

Time continued its flow as if nothing had happened;

and before anyone knew it, one year and a half had elapsed since the tragic even of Gypsy’s death. Summer had crept once again over the small town engulfing everything in choking heat.

The three inhabitants of number 12, Huntington Road were each doing something completely different.

Happily humming an unintelligible tune, the almost sixteen-year-old teenager was packing up his belongings in a medium sized suitcase.

He was once again about to leave for the annual summer camp he had attended the previous year. It was sure to be another great holiday spent with his best friends from school, maybe even meet some girls…the possibilities were endless!

Grinning widely at the prospect, Caleb casually threw the last item of clothing on the big pile in his luggage and proceeded to try and get the thing closed.

In the next room, with the door locked up, Sebastien was straining to find a solution to his problem.

He wearily took off his glasses and rubbed the bridge of his nose. He wasn’t sure whether the rows of promotions that had propelled him to surgeon had been a good or a bad thing. All he knew was that he had to finish several reports and think of a way to perform a surgery without loosing his patient.

No one in that house seemed to understand how important each job was for him: someone’s life depended on the hours he spent in his office!

On the other side of the corridor, lying on the king sized bed and staring at the ceiling, was a young woman, deeply immersed in her own problems.

What had gone wrong, what had happened to the man she loved? Why had everything changed so much in such a short period of time? Why had everything fallen in such a boring routine: wake up, prepare breakfast for Caleb and Sebastien, watch them both leave for either school or work, then wait another half a day until the teenager comes home; have lunch with him, then wait again, sometimes until the wee hours of the morning for the absolutely exhausted husband to come home, only to begin the routine again.

She couldn’t even remember the last time they had been intimate with each other, it must have been a couple of weeks since that evening.

She wanted her husband back, not the 24/7 working machine she now had. Locking himself up in his office even during the weekend and not coming out unless he was hungry or needed to use the toilet.

She sighed loudly, aware of the fact that no one could hear her anyway. It didn’t help that her pitiful situation was making her get stressed and cranky. It wouldn’t have been a surprise if her illness returned, the cherry on the cake!

There was a thundering knock on the door that made Shadee start with surprise. Turning her head towards the door – secretly hoping to see her estranged husband – she saw the red mane of hair that belonged to Caleb.

‘It’s almost time, Shae! The bus should be here any moment.’

‘Uh, ok.’ The young woman stood up from the bed and tried to shrug off all her depressing thoughts ‘Let’s head downstairs then. You can go ahead, I’ll go call Sebastien so we can see you off.’

Caleb opened his mouth to say something, but Shadee just walked past him, so he gave up on whatever he wanted to say.

She approached the door of her husband’s office, drew a deep breath then pushed the door handle. Nothing. The door was locked. She knocked a little louder than she had meant.

‘Sebastien! Caleb is leaving, come out of there!’

‘Yeah, yeah… I’ll be there in a minute…’ Seb’s muffled voice answered.

Shadee rolled her eyes and proceeded towards the stairs after Caleb. He was skipping happily along the fence, throwing continuous glances at the road. He looked up and gave his niece a big grin, seeing that she wasn’t in the best of moods.

‘Got everything packed up?’

‘Yup!’ the boy answered, patting his suitcase.

‘Do you have any food or water with you, for the road? If you need a sandwitch I can go and fix you something up in a jiffy-’

‘Don’t worry, Shae’ Caleb laughed ‘I’m not going at the other end of the globe! The camp is just a three hour ride away from here.’

‘Right...’ She grumbled ‘And where’s Seb? He said he’d come to see you off!’

‘It’s okay, I went to say goodbye to him before I came to you. Knew he’d probably forget anyway.’ The boy chuckled, then suddenly took a serious grimace at the furious glance of his niece ‘Oh look, the bus’s coming!’

He gave Shadee a quick hug and hurried through the wide open doors. The young woman remained there waving and watching until the yellow bus disappeared in the distance.

She then turned around, glaring at the window of her husband’s office. Typical for Sebastien! What bothered her most was that poor Caleb had already got used to these awful habits of his and didn’t expect anything more from him.

She turned on her heel, marching back inside the house, up the stairs and back in front of the office door. This time she didn’t try to open the door, she simply banged with her fists.

‘Sebastien, you twit!’

‘Uh oh!’

There was a click from the inside of the room and the young man backed away a few steps to let his wife storm her way in.

‘I’m so so so sorry!’ he began before Shadee could start screaming again ‘I was just about to leave, when this idea hit me-’

‘An idea isn’t the only thing that’s gonna hit you!’ she roared back, flaring her nostrils ‘You know perfectly well what that boy’s been through! You know he sees a new father figure in you! He’ll be away for two whole months and you can’t even come for a few minutes to say a proper goodbye to him!’

‘I-’

‘I’ve had it with this! Really! It’s been going like this for almost an year!’ she had rapidly gone from raging anger to being on the verge of tears ‘Why can’t we go back to the way we used to be? Is it really that hard to put work on second place…’

She would have liked to continue saying her mind, but the phone started to ring off the hook.

While Sebastien returned to his desk to answer it, she ran quickly to the bathroom, as she suddenly felt the urge to vomit.

Chapter 31

Emerging out from the bathroom, Shadee noticed how silent and deserted the house seemed to be.

Apparently Sebastien had finished his telephone conversation as no sound was emerging from behind the once again closed door.

She shook her head, then returned to the bedroom for another few hours of solitude. She could start reading a good book or something… Who was she trying to kid? She wouldn’t be able to concentrate on a word, all she could think of was Sebastien, whether he had understood that his marriage life had reached a crisis point, if he was actually giving their previous argument any second thought.

Shadee had lunch all alone in the kitchen.

She still wasn’t ready to forgive her husband and was determined to let him fend for himself with food, laundry and whatnot. She strained her ears for quite some time afterwards, waiting to hear when he went to get a bite to eat, but her attempts were fruitless. Apparently he wasn’t hungry at all, or maybe had a secret stash of chocolate bars in his office, as he didn’t leave it for the rest of the day.

When evening finally came, the young woman decided to take pity on him and call him for dinner. She once again approached his office door and listened intently for a sound giving away his activities, but still couldn’t make out anything. She knocked. For a few seconds there was no response, but in the end a soft moan beckoned her to enter.

She had expected to find him immersed in some hospital papers or studying some advanced medical books, but his desk was empty and his computer had been turned off. He was simply sitting there, staring at the blank screen, his eyes bloodshot and puffy.

Shadee stopped in the doorway, surveying him for a few moments, then coughed lightly. Sebastien turned towards her and smiled faintly.

She was quite content at the thought that her words had weighed so much on Sebastien, that he seemed to care for the two them after all and had stopped working to think things over.

‘Dinner is ready.’ She said quietly, surprised herself at the tenderness in the tone of her voice ‘Come down if you’re hungry.’

She then closed the door with a soft click and descended into the kitchen, starting to lay the table. Soon afterwards, Sebastien appeared into the room, looking slightly dazed and confused.

He sat down on one of the chairs and dreamily ran a hand through his hair, intently observing the food on his plate.

Shadee took a seat across from him and proceeded to eat her dinner without speaking. The silence seemed to press on them from all the sides, the woman suddenly regretted calling him down, his presence there next to her. They seemed so estranged and uncomfortable, she couldn’t remember ever having felt that way.

‘So… who was on the phone earlier?’ she decided to start a neutral topic, not mentioning their previous fight.

Sebastien shrugged, deliberately chewing longer on his bite of steak ‘It was no one important...someone advertising something…’

‘Oh, got it…Did you manage to finish the report for Sloane?’

‘No, not yet.’ He shook his head and bit his bottom lip ‘Got a few more loose ends to tie up…’

Shadee gave up on trying to strike a conversation and returned to eating her dinner in silence. She threw her husband furtive glances from time to time. He seemed to be somewhere far, far away. His eyes were unfocused and his hand kept filling the fork mechanically, without actually registering anything. Finishing the last bite, the young woman stood up to gather the dishes, but Sebastien shook his head at her outstretched hand.

‘No, let me. I’ll do the dishes this time!’

Shadee grinned widely. He actually cared! They would finally go back to the way they used to be! She giggled happily and craned her neck to give him a light kiss on the lips.

Sebastien looked at her startled before turning his head in the direction of the door. Her lips touched his cheekbone, suddenly turning cold and numb. She looked at him frowning, feeling deeply hurt. She had spoken too soon…

‘I’m sorry!’ Sebastien spoke, realising his mistake ‘I just need some time…for…thinking…for myself…’ he sighed and took the dishes to the sink, turning the tap.

Shadee stood there, rooted on the spot for a few moments; she was still shell-shocked about what had just happened.

‘I think it would be better if I slept on the couch tonight.’ Her husband’s voice wafted from the sink.

Swallowing hard, the young woman nodded and heard her own raspy voice say ‘Okay...’

She turned on her heel and headed back for the bedroom. Several waves of shock swept over her successively. The reflection in the mirror showed a very white face staring back.

She couldn’t grasp the events, it couldn’t be happening! She had been so sure that Sebastien was her soul mate, that their marriage would be perfect. But now, only two years after uniting their destinies, they seemed to have hit rock bottom. Was this the end?

I started school this monday and I'm already feeling tired as crap... :( The teachers keep reminding us of our finals already and it's all "wah". Oh, well I did have to go through this at one point or another. But I probably finish writing and posting the update, sometime during the weekend. :)

Chapter 32

Shadee had a very restless night, all alone in the huge bed. Even though there hadn’t been any interaction between the two of them in the past couple of weeks, she had got too used to feeling him there next to her, hearing his rhythmical breath.

Something was going on with Sebastien and this time it was no longer a question of him being preoccupied with work, reports and surgeries. The thought that a reassessment of his marriage had made him think their union was worthless made Shadee cringe painfully. She still loved him, her heart still raced every time they kissed or snuggled.

And the phone call…maybe that phone call had not been “someone advertising something”, maybe its importance was greater than Sebastien had let her think. What if there was someone else… No! She couldn’t allow her mind to stray that far!

She reached the decision of confronting him first thing in the morning, to clear the air once and for all. One thing that she had learned from their argument was that it wasn’t a good idea to pretend nothing had happened and everything was okay when it actually wasn’t.

She finally fell asleep at three o’clock in the morning and tossed and turned in her bed until seven. Going down for breakfast, she noticed with disappointment that her husband had already left for work, as the couch was empty.

She would call him a little later at the hospital and ask him to hurry up when coming home, as they had a few problems to sort out.

The young woman had a scant breakfast, then tidied around the house and especially in Caleb’s bedroom, who was a typically shambolic teenager.

She then picked up the phone and dialed the number of the hospital. The cold voice of the receptionist answered her.

‘Glenwood Hospital, how may I help you?’

‘Hello, I’m Shadee Bronfield. I’d like to talk to Dr. Bronfield if that’s possible.’

‘Dr. Bronfield took the day off, m’am. He didn’t come to work at all, rescheduled all his appointments.’

‘Oh.’ All the air seemed to be sucked away from her lungs ‘Okay, thank you.’

The rest of the day all Shadee could do was pace up and down the corridor and look out the window every few seconds. Where was he? He hadn’t mentioned a word about this! What if this wasn’t a first for him? What if this had been happening under her nose, Sebastien actually going to see some other woman. The though was unbearable, but possible nonetheless. She tried her best to keep her calm and not go nuts while waiting for him.

Finally, after what seemed to have been an eternity, Sebastien’s slightly distant shadow appeared on the sidewalk. Shadee wanted to run out and confront him there and then, but thought better of it.

This proved to have been a good decision as only a few seconds later another shadow approached quickly that of Sebastien’s. It was a woman!

Heart beating frantically, Shadee pressed her nose to the window, trying to take in all the details of what was going on. The woman was a skinny blonde, wearing quite a revealing red dress, matching hat and shades.

She put a hand on Sebastien’s shoulder and turned him around, her shiny, red lips pursed to a seductive smile. Shadee could only see Seb’s back, so she couldn’t realise what sort of facial expression he had.

The mysterious woman said something, batting her lashes and leaning in on him. Sebastien seemed quite petrified as the woman went on talking. If only she could hear what the woman was saying! But it was quite obvious that she was no stranger to him, as she stretched a white, long-finger hand and caressed his cheek.

Cold, icy air seemed to surround Shadee as she watched her worst nightmare playing before her eyes. She could feel tears taking shape, obscuring her view, but blinked them quickly away, in order not to loose any movement of lips or gesture, aware that this only worsened her condition. What nerve Sebastien had, daring to flirt with that woman directly in front of their house!

The blonde came even closer to him, as if leaning in for a kiss and Seb took a step backwards, throwing cautious looks down the street and at the house. Shadee quickly hid away from the window’s frame, she didn’t want to break the party, not now when she would finally have her answers!

The lovely couple seemed to realise it wasn’t too safe to be flirting around in front of the house, so they said a formal goodbye and parted ways, Sebastien slowly and thoughtfully opening the gate and walking down the path to the porch.

He entered the house, looking so tired and anguished that he almost didn’t notice Shadee standing there, her arms crossed.

‘Who was that woman?’ her voice sounded coarse and menacing, but calm at the same time; it made Sebastien start and give a forced smile.

‘Oh, it was you Shadee!’ he breathed wearily ‘Scared the living days out of me…’

Sebastien frowned, being cornered and unable to blurt out convincingly enough lies. His mind was racing, he had to make a plan and quickly. He had had it with everything!

‘I’m sick of being yelled at!’ he fumed, raising the tone of his voice slightly.

‘I’m glad to hear that, honey!’ Shadee burst out, unable to contain herself anymore ‘But, unless you haven’t noticed, our marriage is going down the drain and you’re the one responsible for this!’

‘Maybe this is for the best then! Maybe I’m just tired of not being understood by my own wife-’

‘NOT BEING UNDERSTOOD?!? Who do you think has been putting up with your lack of involvement? You think I haven’t tried to get why you never come home earlier, why you never get out of that d*mn office of yours?!? But now I seem to understand!’ she gestured towards the door ‘How long has this been going on for?!?’

‘You know what? I don’t have to do this! I don’t have to answer all your stupid questions!’ Sebastien barked, stormed past her and ran up the first flight of stairs, turning to her again ‘All I want right now is to be as far away from you as possible!’

Shadee heard him stomp all the way upstairs and bang some doors. In a few minutes’ time he was back with a few bags packed and some books under his arm. Without even looking at his wife, he determinately walked out of the door and disappeared into the reddish light cast by the setting sun.

Chapter 33

Shadee just stood there, her mouth slightly open and eyes widened in sheer surprise. Sebastien had just left…he had just walked out the front door, probably never to return again. She looked at the wooden door, still ajar, noticing the glowing red light spreading over the floor.

Calm and determined, the young woman took a few steps towards the entrance and softly pushed the door shut. Just then did the wave of shock hit her. Her knees started to shake uncontrollably, but she didn’t make any effort to keep her balance and dropped swiftly to the floor, streams of tears running down her face. She was alone! Her marriage was over! Sebastien had left her for good!

She suddenly found it impossible to breathe and desperately gasped for air, but her windpipe appeared to be obstructed by something very big and heavy. The clothes seemed to have gained a will of their own and were strangling her, pressing on her chest and lungs. With feverish moves, Shadee tore at them with her trembling hands, finally managing to get them all off, and remained stark naked in the middle of the hallway.

Still finding it hard to breathe, choking in her tears, she abruptly stood up and grabbed the nearest phone off the hook, dialing the number of the only person that could help her through those moments.

‘Holly!’ she gasped for air again, but couldn’t finish her sentence.

‘Shae! What’s wrong? Is everything ok?’

‘He left-’ Shadee finally managed to mumble. The fact that she had stated it aloud made everything even more real ‘He’s gone!’

‘Who left? What happened? Are you hurt?! Ah, never mind! Don’t leave anywhere, I’ll be there in a few minutes!’

Hearing the tone at the other end of the line, Shadee felt more alone and desperate than ever. It really was the first time she was experiencing those feelings. She stood up again from the corner she had been cowering into, but her vision blurred and she suddenly felt queasy. She tried to grab something for support as her eyes became more unfocused, but her hand simply grasped out in thin air, then fell alongside her limp body on the floor with a small thud.

It was like a dream, a pleasant dream where she was spinning round and round and round, never stopping, never knowing whether it was reality or not. But the dream broke.

Shadee’s eyelids flickered slightly and she opened her eyes to find herself, predictably, in a hospital bed. She had recognised the symptoms of a blackout, but she had no idea for how long she had been out. As there was no one else in the room, she quickly spotted the nurse button and pressed it once. A few minutes later a pleasant woman opened the door to her ward.

‘You’re up Mrs. Bronfield? Good, good.’ She approached her bed and did a short routine check on the young woman ‘Is there anything you need?’

‘Mm… I am a little hungry actually… but I’d also like to know what happened and how long I’ve been…um…sleeping?’

The nurse hesitated slightly, but in the end answered Shadee’s questions. ‘Your friend, Holly Rendell called an ambulance from your house. You had apparently collapsed.’ She stopped and bit her bottom lip. Shadee had a vague idea why as well: she did remember having completely undressed herself before calling Holly; plenty of questions must have arisen as to why she was lying there, stark naked. ‘You were rushed into the hospital, Dr Holms decided to administrate you some sedatives and then ran some tests. You’ve been out for almost thirteen hours now.’

‘But that’s not the correct procedure!’ Shadee was revolted; in what hospital had she landed? ‘He wasn’t supposed to put me to sleep! He should have helped me wake up, then run the tests and everything. I know this, my husband’s a…’ her voice trailed off; she wasn’t really sure whether she still had a husband anymore.

‘Oh, I know Mr. Bronfield! You’re at Glenwood Hospital!’ the nurse nodded eagerly ‘And you shouldn’t worry, Dr Holms is one of the best we have, he wouldn’t have done anything to put you at risk.’

Shadee didn’t put up a fight anymore, even though she still wasn’t satisfied with the way she had been treated. But she felt tired and exhausted of the strength to continue arguing on the point, despite the fact that she had slept for almost thirteen hours.

‘Is Holly here?’ she asked after a small pause.

‘No, she left approximately one hour ago. She asked me to tell you her husband had called because one of her sons had fever. There wasn’t anything for her to do here anyway.’ The nurse winked at her friendly, then headed for the door ‘I’ll bring you breakfast, then Dr Holms is going to come to talk to you and I think you’ll be free to go home afterwards.’

‘Mmhm…hospital food ain’t that bad…’ Shadee thought a few minutes later, while munching on a piece of buttered toast from the tray the nurse had brought her.

The ward she was in seemed really nice as well. Lucky thing, she had Bronfield as a last name…

A soft knock on the door interrupted her train of thought and a friendly young man entered the ward.

‘ Good morning, Mrs Bronfield! I hope I’m not getting in the way of your breakfast!’ the doctor smiled and walked closer to her bed, putting his clipboard on a table.

‘Ah, no, I was just about to finish.’ Shadee pushed the tray away and sat up straighter in the bed. All she wanted was to get out of that hospital and return home to cry and wail a bit more.

‘Good, good.’ The young man pulled a chair next to her bed and stretched his hand ‘I’m Dr Kevin Holms and I was the one who ran all the tests on you. Should we get down to business?’

‘Sure.’

‘Well, your blood tests showed me that your iron levels are quite low, which means you are susceptible for anemia, so I’ll prescribe you some iron tablets and such. Also your glucose levels are close to the lowest threshold, but no worries here, you are just eligible for an excuse to eat more chocolate!’ he laughed shortly, then continued to read his clipboard ‘I have tested your hormone levels as well and I must say, your progesterone is sky-high. This may give us a clue as to why you collapsed.’

‘Well, it means I should be congratulating you, Mrs. Bronfield. You’re pregnant!’

Chapter 34

Pregnant … pregnant … pregnant…

Shadee looked around her bedroom and it seemed like she was seeing it for the first time. A bubbly sensation that had started somewhere under her belly-button was slowly creeping its way up to her stomach. Was it actually possible to be happy about it under the given circumstances? Yet Shadee could barely suppress a grin at the thought that she was going to be a mother; nothing mattered at that moment, nothing besides her and the baby developing inside her.

She drew a deep breath, closed her eyes and tried to envisage the changes that would happen over the next period of time. Much as she didn’t like to admit it, she was almost completely alone: her grandparents were long dead, Caleb was off on his summer camp and Sebastien… well… Sebastien was as if he didn’t even exist. The only person that could help her through those moments was Holly, who conveniently enough had experience with pregnancy and babies.

Still…she did wish Sebastien were there, next to her…

The following five weeks proved to be quite a difficult period in Shadee’s life. Suddenly its presence acknowledged, the baby was doing everything in its power to remind the people around it that it was there: Shadee barely had a few hours a day when she wasn’t throwing up or feeling too sick to eat something and she decided to spend them sleeping without risking to choke in her own puke.

Holly had indeed become an invaluable person in the young woman’s life: ignoring Shadee’s protests, she had given up her part-time job and resolved to practically come and live with her over the day, dragging the twins along with her when their grandmother couldn’t watch over them. The almost three-years old twins, Martin and Adrian, were the most adorable kids Shadee had ever seen but at the same time they were also quite a handful pair of toddlers, disappearing out of sight during the shortest lapse of attention.

With all the attention and care she was given, Shadee didn’t have a lot of opportunities to think about the fact that she was going to be a lonely mother. She had even accepted the thought and tried to imagine her life around it.

‘Adrian!’

Shadee gave a start and refocused on her surroundings: she was in her bedroom, lying face up on the bed and one hand on her still flat belly. Holly was wearing a fierce expression as she squinted at the guilty looking Adrian, who had just attempted to squeeze through the unclosed door.

‘I am going to go mad with these two!’ she sighed and turned back to face Shadee ‘I’m really sorry, you had fallen asleep, hadn’t you?’

‘No, no worries, Holly. I was just thinking.’ The young woman smiled mildly, oblivious to the incredulous look on her friend’s face. Yes, she was dead tired not having slept properly over the last couple of days; yes, the stormy, thundery evening was perfect for a nap and yes she had closed her eyes, but she hadn’t actually been able to fall asleep.

Holly stood up from the armchair she had previously flopped onto: ‘Anyway, I think me and the two rascals had better left. You really could with some sleep, Shae, you look awful.’ She headed briskly for the doorway, lifted Adrian up with one arm, scooped the already eluded Martin from the hallway and put them both on the bed next to Shadee ‘I’ll go prepare a bubble bath and make you some chamomile tea to relax, then we’ll be off!’

‘Jeez, Holly, I’m quite capable of preparing my own bath and tea, you don’t have to-’

‘Don’t you even think about protesting! You deserve to be spoiled like this, not to mention you’d probably end up throwing up all over your boiling tea!’ without waiting for Shadee to answer, she hurried out of the room and snapped the door shut.

‘She’s impossible, your mummy, isn’t she?’ the young woman looked from one small, round face to the other. The twins started to giggle and bounce up and down the bed, shaking Shadee like mad.

‘Guys, please, I really don’t feel like it right now!’

Half an hour later, after the tub had been filled with hot water and lots of soap suds and the steaming cup of tea had been brought up next to it, Holly was finally ready to leave.

‘And don’t forget: whatever you need, no matter how small and what hour of night it is, just give me a call! I’ll be here in five minutes!’

‘Ok, ok!’ Shadee shook her head, not admitting out loudly that she wouldn’t call Holly unless it was a matter of life and death.

Having locked the door behind her friend, the young woman trudged back up the stairs and prepared herself for the sweetly perfumed bubble bath. Just as she was about to get completely immersed, the doorbell rang.

Sighing loudly and cursing Holly’s forgetfulness, she returned to the front door and opened it with a big grin. At the sight of Sebastien, standing there against the stormy background, her heart just seemed to stop.

e) Will she forgive Seb, if seb asks for forgiveness. If she does then on what grounds?

f) I hope you haven't brought Seb back with divorce papers. He is not a thick head, don't make him one.

I just wanted to let you know that I'm (still) alive and I continue to read your opinions and requests.

I am currently cramming for my end of semester exams, a thing that is virtually taking all of my already limited free time... The next chapter is almost completely written, I just have to tie a few loose ends and take the pictures, so the update will come sometime in the near future.

Having said that, I also wanted to let you know that we're nearing the end of the road with the story as I am almost finished...

Chapter 35 - Part I

‘You!’ the wide grin on Shadee’s face was immediately replaced by a savage expression. Without even thinking, she lunged forwards and gave her husband a ringing slap across the face ‘How dare you? How dare you come back here after all you’ve done?’

She was breathing heavily, her chest heaving up and down; her hands had clenched to fists, but she did not attack again. Sudden awareness of the fact that it had been proved to her she did not know the man standing on her porch made her retreat a couple of steps. The situation could get violent and she could not conceive the idea of harming or even losing her baby.

But Sebastien’s thoughts seemed far from starting an offensive. He was just standing there, rubbing the side of his face which had taken a deep red colour in the shape of a palm.

‘I guess I fully deserved that.’ He mumbled, eyeing his wife apprehensively.

‘You damn right deserved it!’ the young woman answered back coolly ‘And if you had some sense in that head of yours you’d turn on your heel and go back where you came from!’ struck by a sudden stroke of inspiration she added quickly ‘Don’t even think about trying something funny because Holly’s upstairs and if anything happens-’

‘Don’t try to fool me Shadee, I’ve been watching the house for quite some time, I know Holly just left.’

Shadee’s insides freezed instantly. She was fearing for her life and was momentarily unable to move or think, let alone elaborate a plan to get rid of her husband. All these feelings seemed to show on her face, as Sebastien added hastily:

‘I’m not here to do you any harm. Even though, after all that has happened, you might very well feel otherwise…’ he looked down at his feet, shifting uncomfortably ‘I know I have made some very bad choices in the manner of handling this situation, but I -’

With a quick swish, Shadee had taken advantage of Sebastien’s vivid interest for his feet and had dashed back inside the house, locking the door behind her.

‘Oh, come on, Shadee! Don’t be like that! I know I did wrong, but-’

‘If you don’t leave right now, I’m calling the police! I mean it, Sebastien!’ the young woman’s slightly muffled voice came from the other side of the door.

‘I have as much a right to be here as you do, Shadee! This is still our house! But I don’t even want to go there, all I need is for you to listen to what I have to say. Please! I didn’t come here to hurt you, I’ve never done that and I never will. I just want to talk.’

‘It’s a little late for talking things out, don’t you think? Anyway, I’m not interested in what you have to say. If it’s your house as well, you can sleep on the porch, ‘cause I’m not letting you inside.’ There was a dismissive tone in the young woman’s voice; from her point of view, the talk was over.

‘Shadee, don’t leave, please! Don’t judge things before you’ve heard the whole story! Give me a chance, at least for old times’ sake!’ Sebastien had fallen on his knees in front of the stubbornly closed door. He had gone too far… he had created too deep a chasm between the two of them and all that just to protect her…

It seemed that his wife had had her say and left him there. His perfect plan, his only plan had failed horribly. There was no chance of making things right again under these circumstances. But, at that time, he had seen no other way out. Had he acted in a different way, the situation could have been so much worse. At least she was fine and had been spared of all the misery he had had to go through in the course of the past month.

Then suddenly, just when Sebastien had lost all hope, a metallic click announced the unlocking of the door. Sitting on the floor, Shadee opened the door slightly, still keeping the safety chain on.

‘Ok, start talking.’

Glowing with happiness, Seb edged towards the door on his knees and sat down on the floor as well. He drew a deep breath and started the story he had kept to himself for quite some time:

‘Everything started approximately six weeks ago, on the day of Caleb’s departure for camp with that phone call that interrupted our…umm…fight.’ He threw Shadee a furtive look, but her expression was unreadable ‘I was announced that my father had passed away. I was quite aware that this moment was approaching because my dad was a regular client of Glenwood’s, he was being treated by a friend of mine, so I had quite a good insight into his medical condition. You see, he had developed cirrhosis because of his excessive drinking, that’s what killed him in the end, as expected. With all his mistakes and everything, my father wasn’t, or at least didn’t use to be, a bad person. I haven’t told anyone any of this, but it’s important that I tell you now, it’ll help you understand.

In his young years, my father was a good man and he married my mum out of love. They were both quite poor, but hard working and were leading a decent life in their trailer. Then they had me and continued to lead a happy, fulfilled life until my mother’s schizophrenia set in. There was no sign, no nothing, she just started showing severe symptoms. I think that’s about the same time that my dad started hating me. Having started to show signs of her condition just shortly after my birth, I guess he linked the two together, even though scientifically there was no tie between them. My mother was getting worse by the day and there were many moments when you just couldn’t talk to her, she was insane, she could hear voices, had vivid hallucinations. My father was torn, I don’t think he had ever loved anyone as much as he had loved her and seeing her become something so different from her usual self was too much for him. He wasn’t a strong man and we didn’t have enough money for her to get professional help, so my dad started drinking.’

It was a sad story, Shadee could feel her eyes getting a little wet as this was the first time Sebastien mentioned his family. She had never imagined that he had gone through so much more than what she had already witnessed and known. Even though she had no idea where this story of Sebastien’s background was leading, she kept listening intently to what he had to say.

‘And then, when I was about five and a half, my mum ran away from home during one of her episodes. We knew nothing of her for one whole week and then she was returned to us in a body bag. She had drowned in a river. Due to her condition, everyone assumed she had killed herself; I never doubted that, as she had already made a couple other attempts while she was still home.

Of course, in my father’s eyes, I was the one guilty for her death, I was the one guilty for everything, so he treated me accordingly ever since. The rest is history, you know it. He already hated me, I grew to hate him. But then, after I had left his house, after we had entered college, I kind of thought things over and realised I cared for him, in a weird, twisted and unselfish way I cared for that brute of a father. I don’t think you’ve ever noticed, I tried to hide it so I wouldn’t have to tell you, but I kept calling him ever since. Not to talk him, I was too proud for that and he surely wouldn’t have talked to me, but just to hear his voice and know he was okay. It’s the fact that he loved my mother so much that redeemed him in my eyes. I don’t think there is any person out there who is purely evil, we’re so much more complex than that.’

He paused, staring for a few seconds at the rug in front of the door and Shadee took the opportunity to stand up and open the door properly. There was something in his story, in the tone of his voice that made her do that; the real Sebastien must have still been somewhere inside him.

‘Come inside, it’s getting quite cold out here and your clothes are all wet.’

She held the door open for him, then they both walked upstairs in the bedroom they had once shared. Sebastien changed his clothes in silence, rubbed his hair dry with a fresh towel, then sat down on the floor again, followed by his wife.

‘Like I told you, it wasn’t a surprise that my dad died, but it still hurt. It was a dull feeling of pain because he was the last of my living relatives, I had absolutely no one else related to me, still living…I know it might sound foolish…but it was a very weird feeling. I was in shock the whole day, it made me realise just how important family is in a person’s life. I wanted to come to you, to apologise and make everything ok again, but I wasn’t acting properly, both my mind and my body were on autopilot. I needed time to think. I don’t even know what I thought about, it was just a dire need of solitude.

Anyway, the next day I went to prepare things for his funeral, take a look at the old trailer, things that had to be done. I took my day off from work. But that’s when the situation really got out of control.’

Sebastien buried his face into his hands and rubbed his forehead wearily. Shadee realised just how tired and thin he looked. He could have very well lost a few pounds.

‘My dad had a very badly paid job, that could barely secure him money for his food, let alone all the booze he was throwing down the drain. He started borrowing money from various people. And he borrowed and borrowed and borrowed until the sum rose to quite a big amount. Then he started hiding and stopped going to work; he was simply unable to pay his debts. He lived on the streets because he couldn’t risk being caught by the gang of the mobster he owed money to. Lucky for him, he died only three days after going into hiding. The problem is you don’t mess with these people and leave unscathed. They don’t guide their lives under rules and principles. They don’t care about anything. This is why I, as my father’s only child and living relative, had to pay his debts or else…’ he looked deeply into Shadee’s eyes and the young woman felt a cold shiver go down her spine.

‘They cornered me right after I had buried my father. Their request was simple: pay 100 000 or me and my family would never see the daylight again. My one and only stroke of luck was that Minnie, the mobster’s girlfriend had the hots for me. She followed me home after the gang had left, you saw her that evening: the blond woman in the red dress. She asked me about you, my wife, and I had the brilliance to tell her how much I hated you and how I had only married you for your money; how we were going through a divorce and I was leaving the house that very day with the prospect of taking everything you had, in the near future. It was the best plan I could come up with, as I assume you’ve had no problems after I had left. You weren’t worth being tortured if you didn’t mean anything to me, heck – from my story they would have considered harming you a favour to me.’ Shadee looked away for a few moments in order to give her husband the opportunity to dry his eyes undetected. His story…it all seemed to fit together…but what if he was lying just to save his own skin?

‘I could have told you the truth, it probably would have been easier on your psyche, but I was afraid we both wouldn’t have played our parts well; we would have probably met secretly and I was being watched the whole time. It would have been a critical mistake that would have meant the end… Believe me Shadee, it was the toughest thing I had ever had to do, saying those awful things to you, leaving you on your own. I almost threw all caution out the window the next day, when I found out…’ he drew a deep breath and his face cracked into a heartfelt smile ‘about the baby!’

Shadee took a few moments to study his facial expression, looking into his eyes and searching for the truth. The Sebastein she knew had never been a good liar, she had always been able to read him in a moment and, judging by the look in his eyes, he was telling nothing but the truth…

Shadee sighed, looking in the mirror, observing the creased face of a still beautiful old woman staring back at her. Time… such an unusual entity, that flies by without really giving a meaning to all things it changes. It seemed to the elderly lady that just yesterday had that fateful episode happened, the episode in which she had welcomed Sebastien back into her life, where he had finally come to remain for good.

Smiling reminiscently, she turned her back to the mirror and walked towards the small bookcase, retrieving a thick family album covered in a thin coating of dust. Yes, time did fly by and the collection of photographs gathered in the album was proof of that fact. She flicked open the first page and smiled still wider at the sight of her wedding photographs. It was incredible that she had ever looked so young, that her skin had ever been so smooth…yet there she was: at the age of 24, beaming widely at the camera and letting herself be kissed on the cheek by her husband.

Shadee turned another few pages, all covered in memories of her wonderful wedding, before reaching the photographs of another big moment in her life: the birth of her first child, a beautiful baby boy named Lucas.

She caressed his picture lovingly with a thin, slightly trembling finger, watching him grow up with every page she turned: Lucas in his parents’ arms, at only 3 months; Lucas being fed with a bottle by Sebastien at 7 months, Lucas making his first shaking steps towards his mother’s outstretched arms at the age of 11 months; Lucas playing with a toy giraffe at 1 year and a half… all the little joys of seeing your baby during his progress through life. Lucas’ photos stopped for a few pages at his sixth birthday to be mixed with those of the newest family member: Danielle, Shadee and Sebastien’s second and last child.

Both kids had grown up beautifully and none of the many photos crammed in the photo album could do justice to the fine adults they had developed into: Lucas, 45, with his own horde of no less than five children and two grandchildren, and Danielle, 39, still not married, but enjoying every minute of life.

The other dear member of Shadee’s family, her “uncle” Caleb ( now at the venerable age of 61) had also found a soulmate, in the person of his old friend Fiona, that had moved away from town when he was quite young.

They had been reunited in one of the summer camps Caleb used to attend and they decided not to let each other slip away ever again. They had since formed an inseparable couple and got married, having a family of their own with three children and twice as many grandchildren. Both Shadee and Sebastien could not have been happier for them.

As a mother, grandmother and recently, a great-grandmother Shadee could honestly say she felt fulfilled. Even with all the ups and downs she had been through, her life could have easily been described as wonderful.

There was no moment that she wouldn’t thank the Heavens for having helped her find the wonderful man that was her husband. Sebastien had proved to be the best choice she had ever made: ever since the faithful day he had come back, he had been the perfect model of a husband and father.

The red beams of sun streaming through the window grew deeper and darker as night swiftly crept in. With another sigh, Shadee clapped the photo album shut, a small cloud of dust swirling in the air before her.

Moving carefully and trying not to make a sound, she approached the bed where Sebastien was already asleep. Shadee smiled: she was still deeply in love with him, as though time had flown by. Again trying not to disturb him, she crawled into bed and nestled close to him, smiling affectionately at the pleasant warmth.

Not long afterwards, the rhythmical breathing of the two intertwined beings became shallow and slow. Like a flutter of wings, they both breathed one last time, then stopped, still in each other’s arms.

I think I may have ended it a little too briskly, as I did have some other ideas to include in the story, but the lack of time convinced me it was better to end it like this, than drag it for years on end updating once in a blue moon.
As for Holly, her life continued just as perfect as Shadee's: she got to see her twins grow up and get married, having children of thier own. Both she and her husband, Steve retired and moved to a quieter place in the countryside. Nothing special really, just blissful life for them ;)

I just finished reading the whole story, it was Beautiful. When I first started reading it my first thought was, "Oh another teenage drama story, Lovely." But something compelled me to continue reading, and I am So glad I did. Its almost six in the morning and here I am tears in my eyes happy and sad at the same time. You did an amazing job writing this story. I also must add that Sims 2 still has a special place in my heart, and that it Definitely conveys much more emotion then Sims 3.
