This is the Official Chatter Thread for the "Official S2C Start-To-Finish Contest". Please ask all questions pertaining to the contest or random chatter here. All other questions and comments made in the actual contest thread will be deleted. PLEASE read through the contest rules and information carefully before asking questions.

*** NOTE: The only non-Maxis custom content that is allowed is listed explicitly in the "Allowed" list under the contest rules. Asking over and over again to allow some other custom content won't make us add it to the list of approved content, so please don't ask. The idea to limit custom content was simply a way to add another dimension of challenge to this contest.

Oh yay, a contest I can actually join, whoot! Sorry, excited... Anyway:
You said in the main thread that S2C staff would be judging. May I ask which ones? Or is it everyone? Or what? Thank you!

Do we get a star? And with the story-telling side of it, what type of story-telling is needed? I really cannot write a story to save my life, and I really want to enter, but if it is Creative, like detailed and lengthy, I am going to have to sit it out.

Game Shark...
There will be four rounds in this contest, and each round will last approximately five days (plus five days for the Application Round). The Application Round will be quite easy and mainly serve as an indication to who is deciding on entering this contest. Each of the following rounds will concentrate on a different part of the game.
Applications are due Tuesday, December 11th @ 9pm (US Central Time)
In short, it starts now and will end in about a month give or take a few days. It really depends on how many contestants apply, which directly relates to how long rounds are kept open and how long they will take to judge.

FurryPanda...
Not all our staff members will be judging, but I will be. We usually dont list judges for official contests, but if the judges want to share whether or not they will be judging, thats up to them :)

mumof5ferals...
If you win, you get a star. The story-telling portion (as well as the other portions of the contest) will be detailed much more when the round actually comes up. But creativity will be a big part of it; it won't need to be very lengthy though. Plus the judges don't want to read something that makes no sense, right? ;) Just enter for the fun of it... maybe it will help you expand your horizons with storytelling!

Sounds great bP, and I will definitely be joining this, but I of course have a million and one questions, for which I apologize in advance. ;)

I see that custom content is limited to Maxis meshes, and have a couple questions. First, does that include the "Lost and Found" items available on MTS2? Also, I'm not really familiar with the Maxis Match items, but I heard mention of them during a Maxis decorating contest...would those be allowed as well, or not?

Also, it says minimal photoshop is okay, such as lens flare, borders, small text, etc. So obviously our pics will need to be in-game as far as background and poses go. Will sharpening and/or softening be allowed?

Now onto application questions...is it okay if the house and family featured in our apps, uses custom content that is not allowed during the actual rounds? I don't think I have a single family without custom hair and custom makeup that I could get some quick pictures of, so I'm just wondering if I need to make a new family now specifically for the apps. Also, will the apps be judged and scored?

Thanks!

alexisaiger...
"Maxis Lost-And-Found" items are allowed, but "Maxis Match" items are not. Yes, any minimal photoshopping is allowed (which of course excludes Sim-pose, Simmerizing, etc), and all pictures need to be in-game. The application pictures are just pictures of a house and family you have in-game right now, so they can have custom content galore. It's the actual ROUNDS that need to follow the custom content restrictions listed on the contest thread. Applications will not be judged or scored.

FurryPanda
7th Dec 2007, 12:22 AM
Applications will not be judged or scored.

Ouch on that one... would it be permissible to ask you or anyone else to specifically critique an app?

beeps
7th Dec 2007, 12:25 AM
FurryPanda...
It wouldn't be prudent to ask a judge (because no one will be getting a score), but you could feel free to ask a member to critique your application. The application pictures aren't meant to be a part of the contest really. As stated in the contest thread: "The Application Round will be quite easy and mainly serve as an indication to who is deciding on entering this contest." So it's supposed to be easy and just warm the contestants up - as well as give me an idea of who to list on the contestant roster.

Items spawned via the testingcheatsenabled cheat would be fair game since they are Maxis objects correct? And the same with preorder gifts and downloads from the official site? What about the life stories stuff, ok or taboo?

This sounds like fun :D I like the progression in the rounds and the connection. I'm really interested in this ^_^

ETA: There were also objects on the German and South African official sites, I believe. Are those ok too or is that getting to be too much?

Okay, I have a question. When it asks what our favorite house/family is, does that mean Maxis house/family, or just a house/family we have in our game?

beeps
7th Dec 2007, 12:33 AM
brilliantcat...
All the items you asked about (testingcheats objects, pre-order gifts, official site downloads and Life Stories objects) are allowed.

It can be any family/house (Maxis or otherwise) you want. Any size, any species, anything. Go nuts!

I have a question about apps.

There are a lot of questions about the pre-made hoods in the applications.

Well I can make up some answers of course, but I would love to know if they have any influence on the rest of the contests..

.. because, I have never ever played with a pre-made maxis Sim or Neighbourhoods which have pre-made characters in it.

I don't even have the pre-made hoods installed. That was the first thing I deleted when installing the game.

Will that be a problem?

beeps
7th Dec 2007, 6:18 PM
appelsapgodin...
You can make up answers if you want. Of course, we would prefer you didn't, but the application information does not play into the rest of the contest whatsoever. They are just fun questions we would like to read everyone's responses to. If you dont have pre-made hoods or whatever, just write N/A for that question.

Well, I'll think about it. I definitely like the fact that there are no eliminations. But only Maxis meshes... hmm... That makes it a little tougher.

I do like the nature of this contest, though. It seems a lot like the game "Cranium" in that it touches on so many different aspects. I often think I'm a little too well-rounded and not specialized enough for my own good, but here it might prove to my advantage.

I am trying to read up on all the tips on how to take photos. Not having much CC is good since I recently had to change my game to a new PC and lost everything :(. HystearicalParoxysm
10th Dec 2007, 12:59 AM
Wow, way to overreact to something that isn't stolen in the slightest. We'd brought up the idea for doing a multi-part contest carrying over stuff from round to round and covering different skills/aspects of the game and stuff in our discussion among the other moderators for doing a new official contest well over a month before that contest was posted. You should be ashamed of yourself for yelling unfounded acccusations before having anything remotely resembling proof.

And speaking of proof... http://www.modyourpanties.com/images/071209200539-angelspost.jpg

anyone can say that they had the idea before, but you didnt use it. . . is like I can say I invented the radio a year before marconi did it . . . and by the way were is that post located ??? the post u gave an image?? i gave you a full thread and you only an image?? is still a stolen ideea of a contest.. because Gerbera was the one that posted first ..

Padlock_SC
10th Dec 2007, 1:22 AM
Were you alive before or when Marconi was?

You don't need a whole thread--the date on Angel's post is prior to Gerbera's thread.

You're being way too dramatic over this. I could sit here for hours accusing people of being uncreative and stealing ideas--it's not that hard. You can find connections between almost anything and everything.

HystearicalParoxysm
10th Dec 2007, 1:24 AM
That post was located in the moderator forum here on S2C, which I screenshotted because obviously you don't have access to it, and I screenshotted that single post as it was where the idea first came up, the most applicable to this topic, and there were other topics discussed in the thread which are not relevant here.

We didn't use the idea at that point yet as we were still developing the contest idea, which kind of got set aside for a while and then was resurrected later on - it evolved and changed and stuff but Gerbera's contest was also about multiple teams using the elements - the only aspect that is the same is the idea of using different aspects of the game for different rounds, which what we'd come up with before Gerbera's contest was ever posted.

The idea of having rounds that encompass multiple aspects of the game was to make the contest more inclusive to more types of simmers and to encourage people participating to branch out into areas that they might not have tried before. Gerbera may have posted a contest with multiple aspects of the game for different rounds first but the idea came up in our mod forum before that. It's not a stolen idea - just a similar one that we actually had first.

Do not post in this thread again, Andymy. This discussion is over - the idea is very much not stolen and I'll thank you not to generate silly drama over something that's meant to be fun.

Let's please get back on topic here guys. No more about this. :)

I will have to say no to swapping/changing pictures. Try to post your applications/round entries when they are just how you want them. Remember there is going to be about 5 days per round to get entries in (and even more for the app period), so it really shouldn't be a problem.

Recolors of Maxis hair are ok? I have default overrides of maxis colors, but I can remove them if I need.

Also, in TeenStyle Stuff, those bookcases with little toys on them, someone has removed the toys and made them decorative objects you can put anywhere. Since they're originally Maxis meshes, would that be ok or not?

Thanks.

I've been considering entering, but I only get the computer when my husband is working. (Especially now that we just got Seasons as an early Christmas present.) There are a couple points during the contest where he is scheduled off for 4 days in a row, meaning that I will have approximately 5 hours to make my entry, get Image Shack to cooperate, and get it posted before I have to stop because my son is home from school. (My computer is slow, so it takes about an hour to load my games now.) This means the quality would suffer a great deal. And I'm still not very good at this anyway. It looks like fun, but I don't think I can enter. :fallen: :weep:

:ghost: :couch:  :coffee: Fortunately there are enough lurking supplies here.

After you press Print Scrn you need to paste them into your Image edditing software as new image and save them to your drive. You basically have to do this for every image you take. You can also take pics with Fraps (www.fraps.com)

Edit: I mostly use the in-game camera, actually. Whenever I upload my Gadwin pics to flickr, it shrinks them down. :( And the only other photo uploader I know (that's good) is photobucket, but it can be very unreliable. *shrugs*

Anna, imageshack is also an excellent uploader, you don't even need to register. Though if you don't be ready to c/p your links or you'll go insane. And its ".us" not ".com" I love it, except I need photobucket now for the bulk uploading capability. It doesn't shrink images, as far as I know.

Unfortunately the answer to that question is : Videocard.

With taking pictures for the sims it really helps if your card can handle the maximum graphic settings.

Unfortunately the answer to that question is : Videocard.

Not sure that's it though, I have a really bad videocard that can't even run the FMVs that are in game, like when there's a birth or an alien abduction.

As for the graphics side of it, while I don't know how good my card is in comparison to others, it's most likely not the best as my computer's getting a bit on the old side. I do move smooth edges up when I do contest pictures, most of the time at least. Sometimes it screws up the textures and actually looks better on the lowest settings.

appelsapgodin
13th Dec 2007, 2:04 PM
Hmmm...

Then it's just the settings maybe.. or type of card? Program used for further fiddling? It probly all has their influence.

It's probly some specifics.. but I got a very odd set-up in my own comp, (2 lesser videocards SLI-ed up to work as one. As a replacement for the best ATI card I could ever afford.) so I can't really imagine what settings would be for other players. Anyway.. when I take pics it's 1280X1024 on a 150 dpi resolution. All settings and sliders up highest (shadows on medium though).

Apologies if this sounds "snarky," its meant to be helpful, because what you describe doesn't sound like a securom error. Could your registry be screwed up? Could your CC be conflicting? Could your game be unpatched? Could you have a hardware issue? Could your disc be scratched? I dunno, but those sound alot more likely... mts2 has an excellent game help faq... right at the top, I'd recommend it to the four winds. Sounds like a hardware issue... if you have a spare cd/dvd drive lying around it might behoove you to just pop the problematic one out, put in the new one and hope it works. If you don't and its not jsut a cable or BIOS error... Too bad, youre gonna have to get a new CD drive (I think).

Purplepaws... the custom content rules apply to every round and background settings as well. This, again, ties into the idea of one of the main challenges of this contest is the use and creativity of Maxis objects.

The rules say at least three family members, I assume more than three is acceptable but you know what they say about assuming ;)

I need to ask and I hope it doesn't sound like a stupid question but are retextures and/or alpha edits to maxi hair allowed or no?

brilliantcat
15th Dec 2007, 10:19 PM
Gah another question I didn't see answered. No custom hair or makeup but what about custom eyebrows? I'm bodyshopping away atm and if I can avoid using the Maxis caterpillar eyebrows I want to

Purplepaws
15th Dec 2007, 10:57 PM
BP- Yeah, I figured. I don't even know why I asked. Oh well, it doesn't matter!

And I'm curious about the eyebrows as well. I need to know whether to remove my default replacements before loading Bodyshop up.

appelsapgodin
15th Dec 2007, 11:06 PM
Well, I already bodyshopped away, but I would like to know the same too... custom eyebrows... please!?

On the other hand.. I can live without it... maxis brows with maxis hair is not so damn ugly as maxis brows with custom hair.

Oh, and is this also the topic where you can tell weird stuff that happened to your family while making pictures? Even if not, I will...

I build this family of 5. Mum, dad.. 3 children. I put them in a simple maxis starterhome to get the round one pictures done. While I was positioning the family members for their portraits, dad decides to go cooking (I should have put Free Will off.) And manages to set himself on fire... and because I didn't notice it in time.. and his motives were appareantly low to start with.. THE IDIOT DIES!!

I noticed it the moment I see the grim-reaper come into my house.

Well, I didn't want to quit and start over again. So, I guess faith decided that I should make a family of 4, single widow with kids.

Now they are crying every time they stand idle... this is gonna be fun.

Recolors of Maxis hair are fine (this has been asked/answered already). Custom eyebrows are allowed as well.

One more question...

I see that Maxis recolored clothing is allowed. Does that also include re-textured? I'd assume anything goes as long as it's on a Maxis mesh, but I wanted to be sure.

Is a family of three adult siblings acceptable? (This is in my main playing hood and having underage sims in the household could disrupt my family grouping).

beeps

AdmiralAeris... That's just fine. Just make sure to clearly state who is/are the parent/guardian and who are the children, and make sure you have at least one parent/guardian in addition to the children as per the rules this round.

Your Sim family must consist of at least three Sims, one being an adult (i.e. father, mother or other guardian).
Just to clarify... make sure that you do create a family with a parent/guardian :)

Everyone's entries look great so far! I'm really enjoying not only participating in this contest, but also seeing everyone else's entries. :)

I did want to direct Wez's attention to the post 3 posts above mine, and the quoted part in particular. Your family has to have at least three sims in it. You still have a day to complete or fix your entry. I just didn't want to see you disqualified or something because the rules weren't followed. :)

FurryPanda
19th Dec 2007, 10:49 PM
As I was cobbling together mine own meager efforts, I was struck (struck!) by a teeny weeny pressing question: will we lsoe points/ be disqualified if our headshots are over 400x400?! If so, how do you change the size of an image once its on photobucket? (The proofs are on another computer). If not, then deepest thanks in whomsoever's direction the discretion is up to. And have a lovely day!

alexisaiger
19th Dec 2007, 11:15 PM
FurryPanda, you can resize pics in photobucket, but unfortunately you cannot specify the dimensions to resize it to. The closest option I see in mine is 320 x 240. To see the option to resize, you must click on your image in your photobucket account. It will open in a slide-show type view where you can scroll forward and back through your images, and on the top are several options, including "resize." I do hope leniency will be given on the issue of headshot size. :)

And on another, completely off topic note, your style of writing is very entertaining FurryPanda. If you don't study literature now, you really should in the future. Cheers!

EDIT: Of course, if your pics are bigger than the necessary 400 x 400, you could always save the pics from your photobucket account onto the PC you are using now, and then resize in that computer's graphic program. ;)

beeps
19th Dec 2007, 11:50 PM
FurryPanda... Since the image size was specifically noted in the Round 1 information, you will lose points if the dimensions are not followed. Part of the criteria on which we will be judging will be based on following the rules. I wasn't aware that Photobucket resized images automatically, but if you cannot get them to be the right size I suggest you using a different image hosting site. Maybe another site won't resize.

Wez... Your entry looks great, but there is one small problem. Make sure that your family has at least 3 members in order to be eligable for full points. Otherwise, you will be docked. Thanks!

Your Sim family must consist of at least three Sims, one being an adult (i.e. father, mother or other guardian).

FurryPanda
20th Dec 2007, 12:46 AM
OK... image size is judged... how much so? Is it a specific tic mark in the criteria, is it judges discretion? (Out of curiosity, will we ever get to see a copy of the judging criteria?) Would it be ruinous to have too large images? Or jsut a blip (anything less than ten percent being a blip).

And the no photo-swapping, does that extend to changing the size? Cause if that's not allowed then I'll stick with my big pics and run with it, I don't reckon I'll be able to do the writing and the resizes tonight, and I am of the opinion its better to turn in something than nothing, even if I know for sure I'll lose points somewhere reprable. Thank ya muchly for your time.

And off topic to alexis, thank you for the lovely compliment, I plan on taking English electives if I get room in my schedule.

beeps
20th Dec 2007, 7:28 AM
The points ratio of having images off-size would be just a "blip", but if its a specific problem applied to only one (or a few) members, that member(s) should PM me and maybe we can work something out to where your pictures will be able to be posted correctly.

There will be a specific tick mark in the judging criteria (as you so phrased it) if images are not the appropriate size, but again it won't be too much of a point loss in the whole scheme of things. Judging criteria won't be released, as it never has been in the past.

Your house must have a back-yard, side-yard OR front-yard for the family.

Does that mean you can only have one, or is the "or" in caps just to make sure people don't read it as "and"?

Sorry Purplepaws! I seemed to have completely missed those, my apologies. If this has forced contestants to hesitate with starting/finishing building their home, I can always extend this round for everyone.

annachibi... Just two different angles is all that means. They could be day/night pictures, both day, both night, etc.
[Noiseless]sound... Yes, carpet/flooring and wallpaper/paint can be placed this round, and they can change next round if need be.
Purplepaws... Just make sure to have a yard of some size. This yard can be located on the side or the in the back or in the front of your home. I just dont want to see a house with two squares of grass around the outer-edges of the home. After all, a family should have a little bit of room to play/BBQ/etc.

Did I get everyone's questions? If not, feel free to poke me so I can answer them.

FurryPanda

To add on to FurryPanda's question....

1) Can we add interior walls or half walls next round, or do our interior walls need to be set in permanent place?

2) Do the required rooms have to be physically separate rooms (with walls separating them), or can I have an open floor plan and just label where each of the separate spaces will be? The spaces would then be separated through interior design of course.

No, you will not be able to add interior walls/halfwalls next round, so please have the whole floorplan (complete with rooms) this round. I have to remove terrain paints, too! I may just start a new house, I've done four but I can't choose. I rarely build for esthetics, I build for play, so this is a challenge.

One more question, are Numenor's Maxis recolorable stairs okay? I wasn't sure if they would count as altered meshes.

Thanks, BP.

SharnaPax... You could also use the terrain cheat to delete terrains for picture-taking.

Numenor's Maxis recolorable stairs are fine; I would consider that a Maxis recolor.

Uh-oh...I thought custom terrain paints would be fine since custom floors and walls are allowed, and they don't require a new mesh or anything. :/ I really don't want to retake my pictures.

Will I be disqualified for using the custom terrain paint grass or will I merely lose a couple points?

EDIT: Actually, now I'm not sure if I even used a custom terrain paint. lol. I know I was going to, but I think I may have changed my mind. I'll have to check in-game tonight. The question still stands though. :) Thanks.

Darn, I didn't use those because I thought they were a new mesh item! Oh well...

Edit: Are we allowed to make minor changes to our pictures after they have been posted? Like adding a border or increasing the size?

beeps
29th Dec 2007, 11:30 PM
alexisaiger... You certainly won't be disqualified for using custom terrain paints, but you will lose points if you choose to keep them in your pictures.

CiaoAlora... I know not everyone will have time, but if you do, you can change your pictures before the deadline. I originally stated that you couldn't, but if you are dying to because of whatever reason, you may. I just request that you don't submit like a completely new house or something.

Custom walls and floors are ok (as stated in the original contest thread), but there needs to be a line drawn somewhere. I don't use any custom terrain paints in my game, and I don't think they add/take away a lot from any lot. So custom terrain paints didn't make the cut for allowed custom content. The two day extension that I gave for this round should come in handy if some of you need to re-take pictures.

Actually, those have been there for a while now. The "eliminated" contestants were those who failed to turn in a (complete) entry before the deadline. The "dropped out" contestants are those who informed me they were dropping out of the contest.

Actually, I loved that house, Roz, so it must not have been the building that was the problem. Maybe you should put more personality into your descriptions. The perfect, happy family is a little cliche and unrealistic. What, exactly, does everyone like about the house? Sure, it's big and pretty and wonderful, blah blah blah, but what made them pick this house over all the other big, pretty, wonderful houses out there? You know what I'm saying? Also, are they going to have a housekeeper or something, because that place is HUGE for a family of four! :D Put yourself in your Sims' shoes and listen to all their crazy Simlish thoughts.
Is that helpful, maybe, Roz?

I just wanted to give a heads-up to boolpropped and everyone.

We've had very bad weather in my area, with a couple of tornado touchdowns close by (one death so far), and we're still under the gun although the front seems to almost be passed as of this writing.

I'm at a friend's house across town from my home. I have no electricity or landphone, and I've no idea when it all might be fixed. There was a bit of damage to my roof from falling limbs, so I have to take care of that first and foremost.

I'm not withdrawing from the contest yet (!), but just in case the electricity isn't restored soon, I wanted to let y'all know! I'll try to keep checking back, and I will certainly let you know if I sadly have to withdraw. Strange January weather in the south (sigh).

Congrats to the top three! And I've no idea what I did to make "most improved", but thanks.

Good thoughts and candles, please. :)

Be safe Sharna! It's been weird weather here as well, same deal with heavy thunderstorms and tornados yesterday with brief power outtages but it's "normal" cloudy january weather today. Hopefully they get your power back on soon and you can get your roof fixed up. If only it were as easy as clicking auto-roof :(

*sends candles and cookies*

8th Jan 2008, 10:17 PM
Thanks all!

Still no estimate on the electric, most of the town seems to be out. Boy, you are so right, I sure wish I had a "remove all roofs" tool! Damage wasn't as bad as it sounded during the storms, though... some shingles and a few bricks off the chimney. At least that's from our own cursory inspection, so who knows. I have the insurance company to deal with tomorrow. Joy.

I don't want to hog my friend's laptop, so I'm going to find a liquor store that's still open, grab whatever fast food is functional, head home and open the windows, read by candlelight with rum-and-coke. It sounds fun, actually. Besides, I know my cats are worried.

For those about to go through this, take care! Have a healthy respect for bad weather. Just know, it's getting cooler by the minute after the front passed! I was sweltering the last couple of days, and I stubbornly refuse to use the AC in January.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words. See y'all when the electric is back!

Guys remember that being in the bottom three doesn't mean you did poorly; it also doesn't mean that you didn't do your best by any means. It simply means you didn't earn as many points as some of your other competitors. Scores in general were HUGELY improved from last round, which is something that everyone participating should proud of. I can always understand disappointment, especially when it has to do with a contest, but I'm just defending the judges' standpoint in this matter. Also remember that what you (not directed at you, Purplepaws) may think is the best entry may not be the best entry in the judges' eyes.

I just wanted to make sure.

beeps

The main bathroom means the bathroom used by the whole family/guests/etc. Not the master bathroom.

EDIT: Roz after reading your concerns here in the chatter thread, the judges made sure to go back and review your score. Due to a typo (yes we all make typos) your score was added incorrectly. With your correct score, you did not make the bottom three, so you have been removed from that list. The judges apologize for this mistake. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to PM me.

Everyone else, scores for ALL rounds were double-checked and we found no other mistakes. If any contestant has a legitimate concern in future rounds, please bring it to my attention. The judges have done wonderfully in this contest, but typos are unavoidable as we are all humans (well... most of us :p)

Lol, well I'm not so sure it wasn't directed at me, but in any case, I wasn't suggesting mine was the best. I respect the judges' scoring, and I know it can't have been easy on you guys.

It's just that being a bit of a perfectionist, I don't have very many "degrees" of effort, so when I'm in something, it's all or nothing. Then if my best isn't somehow acknowledged afterwards, I get disappointed. (For instance, in this case, it's just tough not knowing where I stand in the scheme of things.)

I see now that I should have censored my initial reply. It's far too easy to type out my thoughts and hit the "submit" button without thinking how it might sound to someone else. I swear in real life, I'm a much easier person to deal with. :)

Anyway, that was probably a longer explanation than required, but I just felt the need to clear the air and make sure no one thought of me as a "sore loser" or anything like that. ...Because I'm really having fun in this contest regardless of score, and I hope I haven't put a damper on anyone else's fun.

Come to think of it... aspiration and astrological sign seemedpretty random but got worked (very nicely I might add) into a round.... I wonder if twill be the same with the favorite food?

And just to clarify we need a top down and free shot of each of the rooms listed in the round and the pictures with our sims in them... so 15 total?
