Is it possible to select verticies in 3D view?
The restricted top front side bottom views really annoy me so it would make it so much easier...

You select the vertices in the 3D view using the ALT key + left mouse button.

If you hold down the Alt key you can select vertices in 3D mode, but it seems to be somewhat buggy. Or maybe I'm just not used to 3D modeling programs. In any case, I don't use it that way myself, I just go for trial-and-error with the 2D views.
edit: Now that I look at it somre more, I guess what bothers me about the 3D selection mode is that there's no marquee to show what's been selected, and the dots don't turn red until you release the mouse. a trivial exception, really, but it seems to make it harder to work with for me.

Alt-click (or click and drag) to select
Alt-shift-click (or click and drag) to select more.
Alt-shift-right-click (or right-click-and-drag) to deselect.
For best results just do little bits at a time.

For some reason it doesn't seem to be working in the 3D view

Oh nevermind I think I got it working... it's really sketchy and difficult though :(
I'm working on a whole bunch of different hair meshes right now, removing things like head bands and funny pieces of hair and silly ornaments. So far it's going well... I'm getting the hang of it!
