hair recolouring?

I have never before recoloured anything so I'm extremely new to it so please, dumb it down for me haha

basically I want to make a Hideto Matsumoto sim but need to find the right hairstyle/colour and I've decided to take the approach of D.I.Y and so I was wondering if anyone could give me help on telling me how to go about recolouring a mesh?

Well...I checked the tutorial and download something called Gimp...I read the tutorial and it was very well detailed step by step...however...it uses photoshop and isn't that different from Gimp? Is it basically the same for both or do I need a tutorial for Gimp not photoshop?

You should try and find a GIMP tutorial on recoloring hair meshes. The two programs are similar but there are enough differences that I find it confusing trying to use a Photoshop tut while using GIMP.
