If you want to change appearance (hair/makeup), simply use a mirror. If you want to take a Sim back into CAS to edit facial structure or skintone, you'll need an intensive mod like Awesomemod or Twallan's supercomputer. (If you can't locate these mods by googling, please ask in the WCIF forum.)

Or just enter mirror, save sim, exit.
Edit Town>Create a Sim>find sim in premade sims section and edit him/her, finish.
You're back in Edit Town> place saved Sim that is now in your bottom right Households section and merge with prexisting family.

...and then delete the original, or does the merge overwrite the original? (I love any method that doesn't require a mod; I'm just trying to figure out the process for not having new!Sim and source!Sim in the game.)

I followed bcollins87's steps, and it appears that the process simply creates an imperfect copy of the sim.
All the genealogical and social relationships are lost, in addition to any life-time rewards and accrued skills.
Unless I missed a step, the process does not replace a proper "Edit in CAS" mod.
Cheers. :)

Yeah, delete the original it wont overwrite. You'll have split up the family to do delete original.
twallan is correct but if your mod phobic(not I) then its your only option.

I'm sorry Mangaroo, I'm just failing today and you're catching them all. <3
I promise I'm not typically this stupid.
