It's rather hard to explain, but this is how to turn an alpha layer group into a skintone-pulling layer. The pictures explain it better than I can. Basically, when the alpha is black it pulls the skintone file instead of disappearing.
1. Open your recolor file
2. Go to Material Definition
3. Click one of the groups, whichever you want to change
4. Go to content and cMaterialDefinition tabs
5. Under Settings go to type
6. For skintone pulling alpha write: SimSkin
For disappearing alpha write: SimStandardMaterial
