What music do you listen to that's away from the norm? Besides the Gaga and the Beatles, the Swift and the Fray, Jay-Z and Owl City, etc. etc. etc. ? Basically people that the commercial world never pays attention to.
Feel free to link to youtube so we can check them out!
For me I love instrumental versions, especially Vitamin String Quartet and the Piano Tribute Conservatory
VSQs Lady Gaga is really awesome even if you don't like Gaga: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN8DPNDN-6E

The XX - Intro (Long Version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhnZkNj7kAo)
and
The XX - VCR (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gI2eO_mNM88)
The XX is an amazing band. And I can't figure out in what category of music they'd fit in. But their music makes me calm. And I can listen to their music for hours, the same song all over and over. :)

I actually listen to a lot of Indie and other less popular genres. Awesome yet underrated songs are all over the place and there'd be way too many of such songs I can think of to recommend at the moment. So I'll just share three of them first:
Kasabian - L.S.F (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYYp5-mGQRI)
The Offspring - Kristy Are You Doing Okay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AULaJdMPmIw)
All Time Low - Break Your Little Heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-3XdYpvilA)

MisaMil, I LOVE The xx, though I'm sad to say they're becoming quite mainstream here, meaning everybody and their cat plays their music 24/7. Kind of puts a dampener on it if it's all you can listen to.
As for me, I can't get enough of Muscles. Check these (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_eyfvYdAiU) two (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGTEFJIcipI) songs out.
I also love The Postal Service. They definitely don't get the recognition they deserve. Check these (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUIBnmdJJ50) two out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAPy64IgG58)
There's probably a lot more rustling around my computer somewhere.

So I'm not listening to The XX only. I just posted those cuz they're currently my fav.

I listen to classical, mostly. I have a fondness for 18th/early 19th-century American composers, who practically no one else knows. They aren't even recorded all that much, so I have to play stuff myself.
As for non-classical stuff, I'm pretty mainstream, but I don't know much current stuff. I'm still stuck in the 80s, and I like 80s New Wave. And I like electronic/cinematic stuff. Maybe E.S. Posthumus or Rob Dougan would count as unique? I don't really know...

However I DO like some game soundtracks, which, obviously, are never like, on the charts.

I'd say Ladytron. Their music are just "like it or hate it", I think. Never met anyone who likes their music, though, but I do am a huge fan :D

Hm... I don't know what to consider "unique". You define it as non-mainstream but I have a hard time believing that The Beatles aren't unique. They may be very popular, but they still explored a lot of different styles that you don't hear bands do too much.
I guess, for me it's The Divine Comedy, though. Apparently they're over in Europe, if they're really popular than I apologize, I don't live in Europe. lol

I guess Blood, Sweat & Tears could be considered "unique", too. According to my parents they were a really popular band back in their time, but they raised me up with rock from their time and I hadn't ever heard of the band until a year ago.

I like a (I think) Ukrainian band called (I think) Los Colorados. Whatever they call themselves, polka rock can be sort of awesome. Zee Avi used to be more fringe, when she was just doing YouTube stuff, but I guess she has an album and everything now. I used to have, but now don't and have been searching for without success, a great album by a band that called themselves the Nudes (who aren't another band called the Nudes) that featured another guy I've been known to listen to that no one's heard of, Walter Parks. I keep waiting for a Portuguese singer who calls herself Ana Free to improve and be worthy of acclaim because I think she has talent, but for a while now I think she's basically been taking her music to a pop-y, soft rock, terrible place that's probably going to do well in Europe even as much as I despise it. Basically, with some notable exceptions (hello Madonna and Britney Spears, how did you find your way into my play lists?) I'm guessing that all or most of my music is going to be off the beaten path if your metric is Lady Gaga. I listen to a lot of music, but I can honestly say with the exception of covers and Pokerface I've not even listened to Lady Gaga. Or maybe I have and it didn't register because I didn't like it?
On the other hand, I shudder to think of anyone thinking that Dead Can Dance or Joy Division or Sabbath was "out there" really. Maybe it's because I'm old, and all of that was pretty damned popular when I was younger. I mean, I also listen to a lot of Aimee Mann and Colin Hay, and those are names that aren't on the tip of people's tongues I guess... except that he used to be the lead singer for Men At Work and she used to be the lead for Til Tuesday, notable for "Voices Carry" in the 80s. Those got a ton of time on MTV back in the day, when it used to play music instead of bad reality television.
I guess it really depends on how deep your musical sniffer goes. Tom Waits has had a career for decades and dozens of albums, is he not commercial enough these days? Or Lyle Lovett? Elvis Costello? Leonard Cohen? I think Alison Moorer is awesome even though I just have one of her albums, but I'm not even sure her more famous husband, Steve Earle qualifies as "commercial" when commercial is Lady Gaga. What about my favorite band ever, The Pixies? I know a lot more people seem to recognize them than it used to seem, but I don't know if they're really mainstream enough for comparison to Lady Gaga. How about about Ween? Hammers of Misfortune and Slough Feg? Eliot Smith? Calexico? Alexi Murdoch? Squirrel Nut Zippers, or even Mediaeval Baebes? Camper Van Beethoven and Kate Rusby? Gillian Welch? Back when it wasn't a depressing excursion of comparison where I'd simply feel old, I went to see some sort of concert at least once or twice a week... and since I knew people in radio I got to see a lot of groups when no one had heard of them yet. I like a lot of different sorts of music, even weird, experimental stuff that I frankly can't figure out if I think is awesome or if it freaks me out or if it simple annoys me, like the Michael Gira/The Swans or Deerhoof. All of these bands have significant plays on my phone and computer, and that's not even counting classical music, which I mostly leave up to Pandora and doesn't get reported to my counters.

Ha! I also like Tom Waits. I love Leonard Cohen and Pixies- I would just consider them much more well known than Dead can Dance. At least among people I know.
I love Violent Femmes and Nick Cave too. And Pink Floyd and pretty much anything by Roger Waters
I am older and I have never heard Lady Gaga. I don't have a tv and I don't listen to the radio. I prefer to listen to my own collection of music I actually like. So I think mainstream music passed me right by starting in the early 90's.
When I thought about unique music DCD came to mind immediately as no-one else sounds like them. Tom Waits would also fall into this category, so would Joy division and Metallica!
But I doubt if I could find someone who doesn't know Metallica.
A band that also comes to mind would be Springbok Nude Girls, they had an absolutely instantly recognizable sound.

Interpol (though you could probably tell), LUDO, Explosions in the Sky, I Set My Friends On Fire, Jimi Hendrix (popular, but not exactly mainstream nowadays), and Joan Jett (again, not exactly mainstream). I'm not sure about you guys' areas, but in mine, I'm a musical alien.

I like to think of "my area" as the Internet, that way I can allow myself more peers without permanently bruising my face from facepalming. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure my particular flavor of musical tastes can be rather toxic to people in its entirety... I've pretty much given up on a high end of compatibility on just about everything with anyone.
But pffft, I'm not giving up my Ween moments for people, and for the people who can stand Ween I'm not gonna get rid of my Patsy Cline.

Jo (http://youtu.be/juaaet_ur8E) Kwan (http://youtu.be/TsQ0NE0clxg) Woo (http://youtu.be/pyKVdFeTDe4) is by far my favorite male singer. The middle song i linked is my favorite song by him. You can't get more unique then a mans voice then his; and he makes it seem so easy too.
And of course there is Miyavi (http://youtu.be/x4Zt2-jTAXQ) which is unique because he really that hyper in real life. Seen him in two differnt concerts... Wait in the music video he seems VERY calm. XD
The music list I listen to is so vast I don't know where to go when it comes to unique. Oh you can't forget Apocalyptica (http://youtu.be/rjXFRSuSnh4).
But Sophia's (http://youtu.be/4rZD-XsSbJc) video's will leave you wondering WTF. Funny thing is I never discovered Sophia till the singer played Kamen Rider Eternal.

Very interesting. The first one is hypnotic with the syncopation just before it sounds like Reggae. The softness of the second one reminds me a touch of Spirit of the Redman, Song of the Earth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5WHzqd-apM), inspired by Native American voices. I love it for long drives; it's calming and meditative. It gets a little hokey at one point in the middle, but the rest is great.

Ha ! Cab Calloway : a blue chip ! (Duke Ellington as well). If you're "in the mood" for this kind of music I suggest Don Byron's "Bug Music" album. These are covers of songs of this period with the present recording quality, it's super fun and offers like a zoom effect on these wonderful and sophisticated compositions.

(The Shaggs were weirdly untalented girls encouraged to form a band by their insane father back in the '60s. Their music is amazingly charming and tuneless, and kinda great).

The residents : Hello Skinny (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvJiyOPmsJs) for the weirdness
Yay for the residents! I was gonna post that ages ago, it's one of my favourite songs but after I watched it and followed a few youtube links I ended up in a bad bad place where MTS kiddies should never venture!
E.g.
The Third Reich (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NRweyGHJ3bc&feature=related)
and
Gingerbread Man (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hr-I6-gxecg&feature=relmfu)
After that I just had to shut down the computer and take a rest.
And now here's some Tom Waits to take everyone's mind of this creepy stuff ...

Certainly in my country (which is the UK, if you were wondering) the type of music I listen to is unique.
I am a huge Kpop and Jpop fan. Like, obsessive. I cry for no reason over the people I love... Bom from 2NE1, Sooyoung from SNSD and T.O.P from BIGBANG T_T
I have a blog on Tumblr about it (if anyone is interested it's http://2ne1snsdbigbang.tumblr.com/) where I can talk to people from my country who feel the same way as me, or people from countries like Japan and South Korea (or any Asian country in general really). ^o^

80s synthpop and new wave (Eurythmics, Howard Jones, Missing Persons, Yazoo, etc.), 90s pop and some rock, module music (those are music files that are composed on a tracker), music in French and Japanese, Gackt, and some lesser known Madonna songs (Gambler, Frozen, etc.), and basically songs that most people don't hear on the radio very often.

I listen to classical, soft jazz, and ... heavy metal. Much of the metal I listen comes from all across the world. Soft jazz is mostly Dave Grusin.

We produce a lot of garbage in the US. Not just waste, but garbage in the sense of music, too.

I absoloutely LOVE country music! A bit strange for a 16 year old girl from Scotland but I don't care, I know that if I could sing I would sing country music :D
I'm really loving The Civil Wars at the moment, they're a little bit country folk but not excessively. I have to say I do love their song Barton Hollow when it gets the loud acoustic guitar strumming going and the blues style vocals. What can I say? I'm a country girl at heart! ;)

My favourite band is an eccentric duo from Sweden called The Knife. They're that band where I love pretty much every song on every CD. ^^

I love New Age music, it's been my favorite since I first heard Enigma in the early 90s. It makes me feel emotion, like Classical, but has a beat that makes me want to get up and dance.
Hardly anyone likes New Age anymore, I guess it's an acquired taste.

It's not very unique for a person in general, but it's unique considering I'm a teenage girl who usually follows the ultra-mainstream:
Alt Rock songs, or whatever genre you would call songs such as "Dignity" new politics, "Through the fire and flames" - dragonforce, "Kings of cydonia" - muse, "What I've Done" - Linkin Park, "Holiday" - Green Day. You know, those kind of songs. Yeah I like them (:

Paul Gilbert. He was the guitarist for Racer X in the 80s and Mr. Big in the 90s (got back with them in 2009). He currently has a solo career (since 2000 or so) and has a few albums out. He's a great guitarist and musician and seems like a really cool guy. I only have two of his albums (7 total, I think), but I'm going to looking into buying more of them. I would suggest that you guys check out the songs Older Guy, Black Rain Cloud, and Plastic Dracula by him.

Considering the fact that I'm a teenage girl, it's probably considered pretty odd that I like almost all kinds of music, except for the kinds that teenage girls supposedly listen to, ie. pop music. I like Alternative, Emo, Metal, whatever you can name, I probably like it. I also love electronic music. But my all time favorite music are teh epic soundtracks. Anything from Two Steps from Hell, Zack Hemsey, Movie Soundtracks, KPM Music. IT'S ALL SO PRETTEH! I also adore music from other cultures.
