View Full Version : Roof Help Needed

I don't want to auto-roof. Mainly because it's ugly as sin (so to speak).
However this villa I'm in the process of building really is awkward when it comes to the roof. Can anyone recommend what to do with the roof?
I would like to keep the houses shape if at all possible, or at the very least minimal alterations.

Hi there.
the roof is not as impossible as it would seem at first glance.
I'm at school right now, so i couldn't recreate the house shape to show you how you could do it, so i draw it.
I had to draw some parts of the roof to the other side to keep the image clear. I'm not very good at drawing in perspective, so i hope you get what I mean xD
i used different colors on separate roof pieces for clarity.
you can (and have to) use both normal and diagonal roofs to do the roof as i have shown. also you need to tweak the height of some of them, to make them fit nicely against each other.

I hope this helps you :)
(cause i couldn't test this, i'm not perfectly sure if it works, but i'll try it when i get home, and if i find a better solution, i will post it later :))

I've just tried it. Sort of. I haven't tried altering the pitch of the roof (as I'm not 100% sure how to do it, but I have a theory that involves delete/alterpitch/undo) and it looks like with the correct height, it'll do the job.
Many thanks.
I'll not edit the title to say this is resolved just yet, just in case a problem arises.
Edit:
Would it be too much to ask for you to draw the roof design on the second picture the general shapes/locations of where to put it please?

I don't understand that request.
Your both sides of house are identical, only mirrored, right. So the roofs I draw on the right side, you just need to mirror them on the left side too. I didn't draw them there, cause it would have made the pic really messy.

What about flat roof? Modern houses often looks best with flat roof. Then you can have some tiles outside of the roof itself to great some interest?

I meant the birds eye one to make it easier to see where the roof should start and what not, but it's okay - I had a second look and it seems easy enough to see where they go. I tried doing it earlier and it's exceptionally annoying trying to get the height of the roof exactly right on both sides of the house, guess I'll just have to regain my patience and try again.

Flat roof seems lazy to me, and again they're not something I can get to look decent. All my flat roof attempts just about always seem lazy and half hearted (probably because they usually are).
Edit:
%£$%. This is frustrating. I'm getting the shape right, but I can never get the height of each individual one exactly right thanks to that bloody slider not giving a numerical value (which would make this a whole lot easier I feel).

First make all roofs use the same height (use the slider), then with roof height tool, you can shift-click individual pieces to select them, and raise/lower height of many pieces at once, and exactly the same amount. (hold shift, click on every piece you want to move, and then with the last one, don't just click, but drag so it moves the roofs, if this was more clear, dunno xD.)

Ok, i tried this myself and came up with a roof like this:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1176554
and this is how i did it:
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1176555
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1176556
I used the slider to change the height of all roofs lower, and then moved 4 pieces even lower one by one. the pieces were the diagonal ones, the small roof next to small diagonal, and then the half roof next to those.
Best I can do with a house shape like that. Maybe someone else has better solution.
Also, as you can see, I added one big roof part in addition to the ones I draw.
EDIT
oops, fail >.< , i have one pic twise :P well, i asume you get the picture anyways.

To go with what Armiel says, there is a tutorial that will show you how to change the pitch of your roof in parts. Since from what I understand, that is your current issue.
Individual Roof Slope Angle Tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGEKlqWN_Zk)
It is made by QBuilderz and only 4 minutes long. I hope you find this helpful.

Hotaru, that is the old way to do it. IF Omini has fully patched game they can use the built-in roof height adjuster. IF.

That roof looks spot on. I'll devote time to it later as I lack the mood for house building right now. Thanks armiel for the suggestion and step-by-step guide/explanation, if I manage to pull it off and decide to upload the finished work of the house to MTS then you'll most definitely be credited.
I have TS3 on Steam so it should be up to date. I also have noticed the 'adjust roof height' but wasn't 100% how to get it to work, but then I didn't really devote that much time to it.
Many thanks.
Edit:
Small unrelated note, does it look like something worth uploading if I manage to get the roof right (and the interior sorted, of course)?
Edit 2:
Can't get it. Something always goes wrong. So I'll be ignoring this lot for a while until I feel I can actually do it correctly -_- Thanks for the help none-the-less.
