View Full Version : Unexpected elements in the Sims

One of the things that I loved about the Sims 2 was the chance for something to go completely unexpected and derail your entire plan. Whether it be epidemics that killed off sims left, right or center, satellites dropping on them from the sky, alien abduction etc, it greatly increased the fun of the game by pulling me out of the niche I'd created in my gaming style.
As far as I know there is a certain lack in this regard in the Sims 3. None of my sims have ever been killed by illness (can they even get sick?), and after playing since release I still haven't seen the meteor crashlanding.
Does anyone else love what these aspects do to your game? And if you had a chance what unexpected things would you love to happen to your sims?
Personally I'd loved for Sims to be able to randomly get fired from recession/redundancy. That'd keep them on their toes!

Nothing unexpected ever happened to my sims in TS2; every one died from old age unless I killed them in an "accident". :)
Nothing drastic has happened in TS3 either but some of what I love so much about story progression is that I don't control everything so though nothing "bad" has happened, the surprises never end when I leave a family to rotate and they go off and do something completely unexpected. Sure it changes everything I had planned but I spent so many hours complaining about and/or downloading mods to make things more random in TS2 so I can't complain for finally getting that.

I didn't know sims could die of illness in sims 2 ... i played for years and never experienced it; i'd get pop-ups saying they were sick but it always went away with no effort. I also never experienced alien abduction or a satellite crashing unless i used cheats. In the sims 3 i've had the meteor crash twice which was pretty interesting. So, for me, the sims 3 is better for unexpected things.

Yes. I also miss the small things like the simple interactions (Where the hell is "Play"?). I hate the fact that you have to buy an expansion pack for things that were in The Sims 2 base game. WTF? I have a lot of qualms, but I'm trying my hardest to give the game a chance.

TS3 sims sneeze and can become undead bloodsuckers - that's about the extent of illness.. It looks like Generations is gonna introduce "delusions"..

Well once I had just finished building an awesome beauty shop and assigned one of my fav sims to work there as an stylist. Then, just like that, a meteor crashed, killed my stylist, the Goth family (meh, never liked them anyway) and destroyed the beauty shop.

They've certainly made it harder to kill sims, IMO.
Now you can't even pretend like it was an accident ("Oops, I forgot to add a ladder to the pool" or "Herp, shoulda cleaned up the house more often!").
