Hi, all! I hope I posted this in the right place. Okay, so, I wish to create my own terrain paints for CAW but I can't get the Gimp to work with DDS file. I can install Gimp just fine but none of the DDS I found works with it. Basically I'm totally lost with the different versions.

I have Windows 7 64 bit. Now, do I need Gimp 2.6.11-i686-setup-1 or 2.6.8-x64-setup or some other one? And which DDS file do I need because there are many versions of that one too? I've been searching the net for two days now and I'm none the wiser. I would be so gratefull for any assistance. :help:

But isn't that 2.0.9 for the windows 7 32 bit?

Thank you so much. :) May I ask what version of Gimp you use? Is it one of those I mentioned in my thread starter?

Unfortunately still doesn't work. I installed the 2.6.8-x64 and then placed the DDS file you linked into the Plugins folder. Then I tried to open one of the game's own files - sand01.dds - and got the error message about dds not being able to open the image. I read somewhere that you have to untick the box about "Load mipmaps". Made no difference. :(

I can turn and save an image as a dds file and they work in game, though, and look good. So, basically I'm happy with that. I'm even thinking of sharing them. :)

Right click on any DDS file then click open with, make sure 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file' is checked at the bottom of the promt and browse to your program files - Gimp 2.6 - Bin to select the gimp-2.6 application. Hit OK and you'll now be able to open DDS :) From then on double click any DDS and gimp will automatically start up or just drag and drop.

It's been so long since I installed I forgot about that part :faceslap:

I started out with gimp, but I've ended up using paint.net most of the time now. I think it comes with the .dds capability to begin with. These are the save options I use.

I've been using gimp for so long I'm not sure I could switch!
How does it compare to gimp? I've been seeing paint.net pop up a lot as of late :)

I did as you said and I still get the DDS could not open the image -error. Thank you anyway.

Auntielynds... Omg, it works. I got the WA DDS file open with the paint.net. Thank you so, so much. :bunny:

It should open up fine after that long as the plugin is installed.

Open with path -

If thats not the problem then is the DDS plugin in the right place?

Double check your gimp set up and try again, if it still won't open them for you then I'm stumped!

EDIT: I wish I'd know paint.net works for it when I was fussing with gimp for DDS files, could have saves a load of hassle!!!!!! Ah, well :p

That's okay. I highly appreciate both your help. :)

When it comes to Gimp, the plugin is in the right place but the Gimp itself is in the Program Files, not in the Program Files(x86). It installed itself there by default.

I think I'll stay with Paint.net now.

I think both programs are comparable. I just got more familiar with paint.net quicker than gimp. I use it to recolor the Caw metadata objects, and what I like about paint is you can alter the hue, and saturation, and all that stuff, just like gimp, but unless you close the program and re-enter, it saves the alteration info. This is especially handy when you recolor something with multiple image files, it keeps everything consistent, with no fuss.
