CAW and Sims 3 version mismatch work around explained

Please first follow all steps in this guide (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=441595) regarding removal of custom content and clearing caches.

This should work in all cases where your game is newer then your CAW version (that is to say after a new patch), but isn't likely to work when you don't have the latest EP or SP (see below).

This condition will usually result in the following error:
http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/5/2/8/4/8/MTS_simsample-1225739-VersionNotCompatible.jpg

STEP 0 Be sure that you are using a CAW version that is compatible with your game version; if you have the latest EP or SP then it is likely you want the lastest CAW:
Download it from the EA Site at this link. (http://llnw.thesims3.com/content/global/downloads/caw/worldtool.exe) <----newest version.

If you do not have the latest EP/ SP then please see the table below; each CAW version will only work with compatible game versions because it is coded to look for files from the new EPs, when this is the case it normally crashes to desktop, runs Launcher instead of EIG mode or else gives one of the following errors:
http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/5/2/8/4/8/MTS_simsample-1225737-ProtectedMemory.jpg

http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/5/2/8/4/8/MTS_simsample-1225736-GameDataNotFound.jpg

STEP 1 Be sure that User Account Control is disabled if you are on Win 7 or Vista (Google 'turning off UAC'), otherwise you will not be able to edit the files. Remember to re-enable UAC after you have completed this!

If you still get an error that you don't have permission to edit the file:
Take a deep breath. You can try opening it as administrator, or, copy it to the desktop, alter and save, then replace the original with the altered one.

STEP 2 Locate your game folder, by default:
32 Bit Operating System: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\[Latest EP or SP intalled]\Game\Bin
64 Bit Operating System: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\\[Latest EP or SP intalled]\Game\Bin

For Digital (Origin) and Steam versions:
The Steam versions are irrelevant as regards this thread, as CAW will not work with the Steam versons. The Steam install has a different game version, also it has different reg keys and a different file structure. The advice for Steam gamers seems to be to install the Origin version of the game if they want to run CAW:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1746411

The Origin versions of the game are now installed to [Game Install Location] \Origin Games \The Sims(T) 3, which on a default install would be C:\Program Files (x86) \Origin Games \The Sims(TM) 3 or C:\Program Files \Origin Games \The Sims(TM) 3.

If you still cannot find your game install location then right click the shortcut you use to start the game, choose 'properties' and then 'open file location'.

STEP 3 In your Game\Bin folder, backup the Default.ini file. To do this, copy it to a safe location so that you can restore it later should you need to.

STEP 4 Locate your CAW folder, by default:
32 Bit Operating System: C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 Create a World Tool
64 Bit Operating System: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 Create a World Tool
Or right click the short you use to start the CAW, choose properties, then open file location.

STEP 5 In your CAW folder, open the Default.ini file with notepad -if you get a file access error see step 1.

STEP 6 Find the section of the file that looks like this:
[Version]
languages=en-us,fr-fr,es-es,es-mx,de-de,it-it,nl-nl,sv-se,
da-dk,no-no,fi-fi,pl-pl,pt-pt,hu-hu,cs-cz,
pt-br,el-gr,ru-ru,ko-kr,zh-hk,ja-jp
GameVersion = 1.11.12.012037
CompatVersion = 12
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 9

Copy it to the clipboard by highlighting the last 2 lines (CompatVersion & WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion) and pressing Ctrl-c or right click copy.
Please note the numbers in your section might be way different depending on your version of CAW it doesn't matter copy it, this what CAW requires to work.

Close the Default.ini file without saving.

STEP 7 Return to the sims game folder from step 2, open the Default.ini from the Game/Bin folder with notepad. Again, if you get a file access error see step 1.

STEP 8 Find the section of the file that looks like this
[Version]
languages=en-us,fr-fr,es-es,es-mx,de-de,it-it,nl-nl,sv-se,
da-dk,no-no,fi-fi,pl-pl,pt-pt,hu-hu,cs-cz,
pt-br,el-gr,ru-ru,ko-kr,zh-hk,ja-jp
GameVersion = 1.11.12.012037
CompatVersion = 12
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 9

Highlight the last 2 lines (CompatVersion & WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion) and hit ctrl-V or right click paste, to replace it with the version that you copied earlier. Save and close the Default.ini file.

STEP 9 Turn UAC back on if you turned it off in step one.

STEP 10 Before patching to a new version, restore the backup of Default.ini to the Sims 3 Game/Bin folder, or the patch will fail. To do this, copy the backup Default.ini file and paste it into the location in Step 2.

If you didn't make a backup and need to patch, try downloading the full version of the patch, which should work.

Using this method, others from here and MATY have had good results.
I REPEAT: this is for cases where you game is newer then CAW

In Cases where EPs/Sps are missing-
Look for the latest EP/SP that you own, on the table below.
The patch levels for both the EP/SP and the base game are the maximum that can be used with that version of CAW, patches of a lower version are fine but higher will break CAW.
Also, if you don't have Town Life Stuff and/or Generations you can't run CAW 1.11.10 plus, or patch 1.24.3 with CAW 1.11.9 or lower, it will not work.

Apply the steps above to both EA's latest EP/SP that you own and the basegame sims 3 folder, that is to say do steps 2-8 to in both the basegame sims 3 folder and the newest Stuff pack or expansion folder, steps 1 and 9 only need to be done at the start and the end of it.

Tested CAW 1.11.12 with base game Patch level 1.24.3
Tested CAW 1.6.72 with WA no patches beyond those required to install WA...
Tested CAW 1.9.16 With WA & AMB no patches beyond those required to install AMB..
Tested CAW 1.11.9 with LATE AMB WA no patches beyond those required to install Late night...
Tested CAW 1.11.12 With GENE, LATE, AMB, & WA, Patch 1.24.3.....
Again always the newest if you have GENE but do not have any combo of WA, AMB or LATE, it is still CAW 1.11.12 and patch 1.24.3

Again, full credit to Kiritra for this information; also thanks to auntielynds for the CAW archives, and to all others who contributed by testing.

Please post any comments and questions here.

Thanks for reposting, Simsample. Stuff happens, but it's still unfortunate.

Do you think they are going to update for Pets or will they wait until a patch for Pets is made?

I am fully expecting that they will release an update of CAW for Pets, so if you install Pets be sure to backup your CAW projects!

Was posting on the old thread, but guess this is the new one. Just wanted to say THANK YOU!!! Finally got Generations, followed the steps, and it WORKS!!! YAY! *doing virtual cartwheels* SO happy. Thanks, Kinitra, and SimSample, for posting these tips. Know where I will look if we have the same issue after pets! Did I mention you all ROCK? :beer:

I haven't used CAW since I began with the Sims 3, but decided to start tonight. Upon looking at the version when I opened CAW I was a bit concerned that it might not be the right one for Pets, so I started looking around, and was lead to this thread. When I opened both of my default ini files they said "CompatVersion = 13
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 10". I'm assuming this means that CAW has already been updated for Pets, as I have it installed, and everything matches up.
Now I get to figure out how to use CAW, and eventually I might learn to make some CC of my own. I've been playing the Sims since the beginning, and using lots of custom stuff all along, but am anxious to learn how to do some of this stuff on my own.

horsinround1974, yes- CAW was updated for Pets pretty quickly. It even seemed to work for those without Pets (basegame 1.26) so hopefully you won't have any problems!

is it something i'm doing wrong?

Edit: Nevermind, i just uninstalled my stuffpack and updated my base game, it works fine now! :gjob:

MintyZoi, I updated the first post- the current version is 1.13.3, the link is the same though (as EA always upload the current file to the same location).

World Adventures, Ambitions and Late Night are unpatched. This doesn't matter for normal gameplay, but some people have experienced problems with CAW and unpatched games, so it's worth patching those to try.

Sorry, I mistyped- I meant Ambitions. Generations doesn't need patching.

So to clarify, you need Ambitions patched to 4.10, Late Night patched to 6.5, and World Adventures patched to 2.17, as on the patch table I linked.

Hi.
I'm reporting a prob with my CAW: after I've played in-game it doesn't load the .world file anymore. It does load a bkp file with the same name.
I own no CC at all, and my games patches are the following:

- Base Game 1.26.89
- Ambitions 4.10.1
- Pets 10.0.96
- CAW 1.13.3

(.ini files also checked, were already compatible)
I've cleared all caches files, no results..... :(

Is there any solutions I haven't read yet?
Thank you so much!

All large worlds make it crash? What are your system specs? A lot of people with lower end computers have been having crashing with CAW since Pets, it seems that the system requirements have increased significantly.

Hmm, yes- it seems that 2GB RAM is not enough since Pets. Perhaps you could upgrade your hardware, you can check on the computer Support forum if you want to research that.

pedro_ve, the latest version of CAW is now for the 1.29 Patch, so you need to update your game.

Each time a new patch is released, EA update the CAW tool.

Gen : 8.0

I don't have Pets.

Thank you !

Cocoli- you need the latest version, so just go download it from the EA website.

Thank you again ! I've already tested this one out yesterday and it didn't work : the start up screen flashed before it shut down without giving an error message. I've already tried running the application as administrator (didn't work) and changing the DEP (didn't work either). I'm going to try to make the application Large Adress Aware and see if that works. Hope it will !

Edit : So I made it LLA and it didn't work. As a last resort I tried the fix given on this thread and it still doesn't work for me ! I don't know why it doesn't work because before I updated to 1.26 - then to 1.29 - it worked pretty well. I'm wondering though if the latest version available is really the one I should get as I don't have Pets. Won't CAW try to find Pets objects in my game folders ?

Sorry for the delay. Errr... I've already said which EPs and SPs I have but just in case here they are :

World Adventure : 2.17
High End Loft Stuff : 3.13
Ambitions : 4.10
Late night : 6.5
Generations : 8.0

That's all I have. My Base game version is 1.29. Thank you again !

simsample
11th Feb 2012, 01:03 PM
You didn't specify whether that was a complete list in your previous post! :)

As you don't have Outdoor Living, Pets or Master Suite, you'll probably find that the latest CAW versions don't work (see table in first post). Try version 1.11.10.

Cocoli
11th Feb 2012, 09:53 PM
Oops. Sorry but I thought that it was obvious. And obviously it was not. Okay thank you I will try this one later and give some feedbacks. ^^

Here are some feedbacks : I have installed CAW version 1.11.10 and it did the same thing : the opening screen flashes before shutting down without any error message. I tried disabling the DEP but I can't, I made the application LLA but it didn't change a thing, I tried running the application as administrator and it didn't work either. So far the CompatVersion and the worldBuilderCompatibilityVersion are the same in my Default.ini games files and in my CAW file. Any ideas ? :cry:

simsample
15th Feb 2012, 06:53 PM
Hmm, try the 1.11.12 version perhaps? For the DEP, just leave it on the default setting- 'Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only'.

I own others but not installed.

simsample
17th Feb 2012, 07:36 PM
I would try the 1.5.126 first, but remember you need basegame version 1.8.25 and WA Version 2.3.33. So in your case that would mean a backup and reinstall, as you are going to an older game version.

cbenn- did you solve your problem?

Katie Turner
17th Feb 2012, 08:19 PM
why a back up I haven't played anything. I just wanna build this world I have planned?

I forgot the link, can I have please?

simsample
17th Feb 2012, 08:57 PM
Well, if you don't have anything to backup then there's no need! I was just reminding you.

Link to what?

Katie Turner
17th Feb 2012, 10:16 PM
to the patchs for base game and WA. cause I'm reinstalling again (I messed up somehow before) so i wanna get all base game things done before I put WA in) and every time I install it goes to 1.0.631.00001 and the only up date is 1.29.

And WA goes to 2.6... And when I try to update from simsprogrmas.com It says " the installed version of the application could not be found the application will now terminate."
if I don't put in WA what version of CAW would I need. And would CAW still include the WA options

Am I missing something? :blink:

Ah, the game patches, of course! *Simsample is half asleep*

Game Help:TS3 Patching:Patch Download/Archived

As far as I know, the only version for non-WA was the first release-- and I don't know if a copy of that still exists. If you did not have WA installed you would not have the WA features in CAW, the same goes for all EPs and SPs.

Katie Turner
18th Feb 2012, 01:33 AM
Ok i followed the link but each time it still says "The installed version of the application could not be found the application will now terminate."

am I putting in the wrong place? it automatically goes to my downloads. And do I have to the patches in order?

The patches don't go into the downloads folder, they are executables that you run. This may help:

I'm so angry. I've followed everything, tried downloading, installing, about seven/eight times now and it still doesn't work. I've looked everywhere, and I have all ep's apart from Ambitions, and no sps. My game is up to date and I don't think I need any patches.

LittleSquare- please post your game versions, that will help us to see what's happening. Do you get an error message, or does CAW just not do anything?

Katie Turner- Perhaps you are downloading the wrong locale? You need to download the correct patches for your region.

I can't see that image, don't know if it was important or not!

Can you tell me the full SKUversion of your WA install, including the region code? If your basegame is 1.0.631.00001 as mentioned earlier, then you need to install this patch (http://akamai.cdn.ea.com/eadownloads/u/f/sims/sims3/patches/Sims3_1.8.25.003001_from_1.0.631.00001.exe) to take you to 1.8.25.

don't worry image was put by accident. And what is a SKUversion. If you mean what it goes to when I put it in: 2.0.86002001.

I haven't had a chance to put WA back in yet, I was waiting til this morning, should I put it in or do the patch first

You can do that basegame I linked to first, if you like.

Assuming that your WA is the same region as your basegame, you would then need this patch (http://akamai.cdn.ea.com/eadownloads/u/f/sims/sims3/patches/Sims3_2.3.33.003001_from_2.0.86.002001.exe) for WA when you install it.

I still get: "The installed version of the application could not be found the application will now terminate."

Are you running the patch as an administrator? This sounds like something is blocking the patch (UAC perhaps). That's assuming you have your game installed to C:\ Program Files (x86)?

Katie Turner

no and I probably can, what does (x86) mean?

Katie Turner- Are you on Windows 7, Vista or XP? You need to have administrator priveleges to be able to install the patches.

LittleSquare- What is your basegame version? Your World Adventures game is unpatched.

Make sure your basegame is fully patched (version 1.29); if it is not then download the superpatcher here:
Game Help:TS3 Patching:Patch Download/Current
And install it.

Then patch WA- use this patch:
http://akamai.cdn.ea.com/eadownloads/u/f/sims/sims3/patches/TS3EP01_2.17.2.011032_Update.exe
And apply it.

After that, uninstall CAW, clear your browser caches and download the latest CAW version, which should work.

anyway I re-installed CAW and tried to install patch 1.5.126. and it said:

"The setup had detected 1.13.007 of The Sims 3 Create a World Tool-Beta is already installed. this setup installs an earlier version of The Sims 3 Create a World Tool-Beta (1.5.126 ) You will have to uninstall the previous version before installing this version."

I downloaded CAW from the sims 3.com. So maybe I have to download it again from another place(so if you have the link, and to another version of 1.5126,) please

CAW and the game cannot run at the same time.
There's no WA folder in the User Documents path. Only Program Files.
Is this your first time trying to use CAW and installing it? I mean, CAW has never been installed and run on this machine before? How much RAM memory do you have? Perhaps we need to look at your specs. Game Help:System Specs
And WA is the only expansion you have, yes?
Have you done a FULL and clean Uninstall + Reinstall since all this started (the link is in the Wiki's Patching series - the header with the link "If all else fails"? I haven't been following your issues...Why aren't you patched up to 1.29, I mean? What's the reasoning behind staying on an outdated patch 1.8/2.3? Because you thought CAW 1.13.7 on base game patch 1.29 doesn't work on your machine? And now it turns out WA's install has issues?
If that is the case, then a full Uninstall and reinstall of all games (yes, again) is the only cure.

You already have a post deleted and merged, that means we discourage double posting. Don't make the Edit button feel neglected. ;)

A 1. the game wasn't on I don't know why it did that.

A 2. It was there before.

A.3. No I've used it before, what started this, was a virus over a year ago. We cleaned most stuff out.

A.4. I have, ambitions, late night. fast lane, generations an pets. But WA is the only one in.(the others were gifts, I played them to not be ungrateful, but all they did was cause more issues)
I was told to try 1.5.126 first but that I would need 1.8/2.3. define full uninstall, I've already done it nearly 10 times in two days.

I don't know how much RAM memory I have,

and no offence you should go back look at my other post.(it's alot easier then trying to explain)

This NOT my computer, it's my mother's and including myself there is six users on it. So I have to be careful with what I do.

and yes I know about the multi-posting, I keep forgetting where I leave off.

sims should come with the warning: may cause stress and the urge to use the game as a frisbee and or smash your computer

@ellacharm3d- Katie is trying to get CAW running with only WA, and it seems that she will need to have a very old game version and CAW version to do that. The current version of CAW requires the latest EPs. She has done an uninstall and reinstall so that we can get to this older patch version. Not sure if it will work, but we are trying! :lol:

@Katie Turner- the links in the first post are to older complete versions of CAW, not just patches. So, you were correct to uninstall the new version of CAW and then install 1.5.126 from the link in the first post. :)

As you are getting this error:
http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/5/2/8/4/8/MTS_simsample-1225736-GameDataNotFound.jpg
NOW try checking for version mismatch as in the first post.

SO, you need to go to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 World Adventures\Game\Bin and open Default.ini with notepad.

Then, go to C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3 Create a World Tool and open Default.ini with notepad.

Check the CompatVersion and WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion as in step 6 of the first post. They should match in both default.ini files.

Do they match?

If not then change the WA one to match the CAW one. Then save it and close all files. Test CAW. Does it work?

ellacharmed

But, WA's last patch is at 2.17 (corresponding to BG's 1.22 and CAW's 1.11.10). Why not that patch version, I was wondering...and the edit of the .ini don't work with WA as the last EP (edit WA's to match BG's 1.29 with CAW's 1.13.7, that is)?
I'm still all turned around with all this version matching business, it seems.

@Ella- If you look at the table on the first page, to use CAW with only WA Kiritra found that you need to have basegame 1.8.25, WA 2.3.33 and CAW 1.5.126. However, for Katie it seems that this is not working! :( We know definitely though that you can't have 1.11.10 CAW without Generations, and so the latest CAW definitely needs later than WA.

Katie Turner- If you are still getting errors with no version mismatch then the only thing we can try is the next version, 1.6.72. For that you need this patch for the basegame:
http://akamai.cdn.ea.com/eadownloads/u/f/sims/sims3/patches/Sims3_1.11.7.005001_from_1.8.25.003001.exe
And this patch for WA:
http://akamai.cdn.ea.com/eadownloads/u/f/sims/sims3/patches/Sims3_2.6.11.005001_from_2.3.33.003001.exe
And then this patch for CAW. Note- this is a patch; so do not uninstall CAW, just extract it and run it as you do for the game patches! This is the only time EA ever released a patch instead of an updated version of CAW.
http://chii.modthesims.info/getfile.php?file=1274625
After that, again check for a version mismatch and correct it if there is one. Then, test CAW but test with a fresh set of user files. By that I mean drag Documents\ Electronic Arts\ The Sims 3 Create A World Tool to the desktop before you run it.

If that fails then I'm out of suggestions; I would advise you to buy the latest SP and patch fully, then use the latest version of CAW!

Okay, I'm going to try to show you how to find this information yourself, instead of me having to find all the links (as it takes a lot of time!)

Look in the table in first post; for Ambitions you need basegame 1.15.34; Ambitions 4.3.4; CAW 1.9.16. So go to our Patch Archive page- the link is HERE (http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:TS3_Patching:Patch_Download/Archived) but you could also find it by clicking Help> Sims 3> Installation FAQs at the top of this page. Then go to basegame patches.

Your current patch level is at 1.11.7 and we know your games are region 1, so you need to look for a patch to take you from 1.11.7 to 1.15.34. So look in the archive and find a region 1 patch for that, then download it and install it.

Now go back to the patch archive page and look in Ambitions patches. We know from looking at the MTS Patch table (http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Patch_Table) that the unpatched version of Ambitions is version 4.0.87, so we need a patch to take you from 4.0.87 to 4.3.4. So look on the Ambitions patch archive page for a Region 1 patch for that (assuming that your Ambitions disk is also region 1; please check that first). Then download that patch and install it.

Remember though that we need to also patch WA as you have that installed too- look at the patch table again and you will see that the equivalent gameversion for WA for basegame 1.15.34 is 2.10.5. So you need a patch for WA to take you from 2.6.11 to 2.10.5. So look in the patch archive, go to the WA page and find a region 1 patch to do that, download it and install it.

Now, you are ready to download CAW. So uninstall your old version of CAW, then download 1.9.16 from the link in the table on the first page. (The link is actually broken; give me a few minutes to fix that. If it doesn't work at first, try later). Then install that, and test.

Now you know how I found the link, you can find them for yourself, so that you don't need someone to keep showing you. :)

Hello,

As of Feburary 20, 2012
These are my game versions.....

Launcher Version ~ 10.0.96.014017
EP & SP Versions

Base ~ 1.29.55.014017
World Adventures ~ 2.17.2.011037
High End Loft Stuff ~ 3.13.1.011037
Ambitions ~ 4.10.1.011037
Fast Lane Stuff ~ 5.8.1.011037

Outdoor Living Stuff ~ 7.3.2.011037
Generations ~ 8.0.152.011017
Town Life Stuff ~ 9.0.73.012017
Pets ~ 10.0.96.013017

I have no clue what my CAW version is.... How do I find it?

I can say that I redownloaded it 2 days ago from The Sims 3 offficial site. And since I've read they update their link with the newest version as they put out new EP's & SP's....... I assume it's their newest, perhaps for Master Suite? What is the version # for it? I do NOT have Master Suite, however I DO have every previous EP & SP released.

I have had the same problems with CAW as many others. The 1st time it would not work, was over a year ago. At that time, it stated incompatible. I assume it was due to me not having Fast Lane at that time, but did have the next EP & SP after FL.

I eventually bought FL & did uninstall & reinstall CAW from the offical site & still the same result. I had also uninstalled & reinstalled all EP's & SP's in order along with their updates/patches after each EP & SP. As well as the Super Patch.

2 days ago, I downloaded it again & still have issues with it. I currently have no plans to buy Master Suite, however I may buy it when I buy Showtime next month. Until then I would still like to figure out why CAW won't work for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You! :)

P.S. CAW pop up with ....

The Sims 3 Create A Wolrd Tool-Beta has crashed.

Exception Information

Attempted to read or write protected Memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt.

:wtf:

P.S.S. I am the only Administrator & only person with access on MY Windows 7 pc. :rolleyes:

___________________________________________________________________

Edit ~ Apparently I need CAW version 1.13.7. Is that the one listed on The Sims 3 Official site? If it is, I have it, but still have the above pop up when I try to use CAW.

Edit #2 ~ I also get this pop up ....

The Sims 3 Create A World Tool-Beta has failed to shut down properly. Please end The Sims 3 Create A World Tool-Beta task using the Windows Task Manager.

Edit #3 ( Last one, I PROMISE) :)

I hovered my mouse pointer over the new CAW WorldTool Setup.exe I downloaded & installed 2 days ago. It says File Version 15.0.0.498

Too new for my current EP/SP???? :blink:

simm374, this most likely isn't a version mismatch problem, as you are fully patched. The latest version of CAW works fine without Master Suite.

What I would suggest is to try everything in this thread:

Especially making the CAW exe LAA.

Not knocking Kiritra's earlier work on this as the issue did exist once, but I think EA made some changes to fix it since then.

I did some testing with the following combinations and didn't need to edit the Default.ini at all!

BG,Last Pack, Additional Packs, CAW version, Results
1.22, WA 2.17, ---, 1.11.10, CAW loads (proof - image: BG[1.22]WA[2.17].jpg)
1.29, WA 2.17, ---, 1.13.7, CAW loads (proof - image: BG[1.29]WA[2.17].jpg)
1.29, WA 2.0, ---, 1.13.7, CAW loads (proof - image: BG[1.29]WA[2.0].jpg)
1.29, GEN 8.0, WA 2.0, 1.13.7, CAW loads (proof - image: BG[1.29]WA[2.0]GEN[8.0].jpg)
1.29, PETS 10.0, WA 2.0; GEN 8.0, 1.13.7, CAW loads (proof - no image; just take my word for it)
1.29, PETS 10.0, WA 2.0, 1.13.7, CAW loads (proof - no image; just take my word for it; the lazy bug hit hard!)
1.29, PETS 10.0, ---, 1.13.7, CAW loads (proof - still no image; just take my word for it and stop looking for it. mkay?)
1.29, ---, ---, 1.13.7, CAW loads (proof - still no image; take my word for it but it is good that you're still with me though. ;) )

So, I'm thinking all other combinations would still work. The only thing that matters seems to be BG <--> CAW CompatVersions match for BG 1.29 <--> CAW 1.13.7 onwards.
If anyone has any combinations where they still get the mismatch error, let me know your game combos and I'll confirm it for ya.

So, @Katie Turner: like I already mentioned you need to do a FULL clean uninstall + reinstall. Obviously what steps you've done in the 10x you've already done this is missing something or causing something else as the proof is not only won't CAW work for you but your game cannot even start.
Seems you're lost in reading our wikis - here's the direct link: Game Help:TS3 Uninstall. If you still have issues, I'd suggest to post in Game Help as it appears CAW and the mismatch issue is not the root cause of your troubles.

@ ellacharm3d

I have come to the same conclusion. I tried everything else here & elsewhere. Either those methods didn't apply to my issue or didn't work.I am completely patched & up to date on all EP's, SP's, Base, & Launcher. I had the newest download from The Sims 3 official site , which I believed to be too new for me. And 1.11.12 was too old. So I downloaded 1.13.7. It works where the others would not...... no errors.

BUT.......... 1 problem .... so far. I can not load a map to create a new world. Says the maps are not a png. They ARE.

I am going to try this as well ( http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Modding_the_Create-a-World_Tool_to_Unlock_Hidden_Features )& that's why I downloaded the 1.13.7 because you can only do it with 1.13.7. Maybe that will fix something.

Does anyone know about the png problem?? :blink:

should I put everything in and try the super patcher?You have never updated using the SuperPatcher to know how the process goes? Or you don't know where to locate the link to the current SuperPatcher 1.29 exe? simsample's walkthrough on how to find things for yourself so you can do it for the next patch and the next after that, is also still too confusing? Have you read the Patch_Table Wiki page at all and the other pages in the whole series on Patching wiki?

You really should post in Game Help (http://www.modthesims.info/forumdisplay.php?f=551), as we've already established the subject of this thread is not your issue. From what I've read from your other postings you had a symptom where the game screen went black and then you had a crash - that is an indication of driver issues.

If the game cannot start, CAW won't either.
But, you cannot proceed with things as they are currently, as your files are probably messed up. That's why the need to do a FULL Uninstall first and then we can start on a clean slate.

If you post in Help forums, we can do as much hand-holding as you need without going off-topic in this thread as the Help thread is essentially a place dedicated to helping you alone.
Also, we can only go so far in providing links and stuff for you to read. If you don't want to read or don't understand what you read, quote the section or the sentence (not the whole page) and point out which sentence you don't understand so we can elaborate for you further, or find other laymen terms to explain it in. Just saying "you don't understand" or "everything is confusing" just tells us that you're not interested to troubleshoot, so in turn, why should the helpers bother (especially when our games are not broken)? We can go as slow as you need to, thus why in Help thread and not here, OK?

So, what's the next step?
Read the Uninstall FAQ again, and then follow along until you get stuck. When you do get stuck, tell us the sentence that you got stuck at and what you've done up to that point, in the Game Help Forum section. Start your own thread and be as comprehensive as possible. And we'll proceed from there.

Since you're using a shared family PC, all the more reason to read everything multiple times until you understand. And again if you don't understand, Ask!

----
ps: how to "quote"? put the text in between the quote tags like this:
(quote)Here she comes round the mountain...(quote) with [ ] instead of ( )

or

if you go into the Advance Editing window (click on the Go Advance button at the bottom of the Quick Reply box), you can select the text you want to quote and then click on the http://modthesims.info/static/images/buttons/buttons-rro/images/editor/quote.gif button from the toolbar.

Ok just to be sure my versions are right

Base game:1.29.55.014001
World Adventures:2.17.2.011031
Ambitions:4.10.1.011031
Late Night:6.5.1.011031
Generations:8.0.152.011001
Create a World:1.11.10.011037

I do NOT have: Pets or "any" Stuff packs in

Are they correct?

And I don't know if this is the problem but I noticed when looking for my versions including CAW have : CompatVersion = 11
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 8

Except Base Game: CompatVersion = 14
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 11

Could that be the issue?

Study the table up there again, especially that last row. Or even in the Patch Table page...
The CAW version you have there - 1.11.10 - is wrong for patch 1.29.

Ellacharm3d- thanks for the testing, I appreciate it! Did you also test EIG mode with each configuration? One of the problems with certain versions was that EIG was either inaccessible, or unstable, or had saving problems. Katie Turner did patch to 1.29, but it would not work for her which was why we tried older CAW versions.

simm374- The png problem seems to indicate a corrupt CAW install, the only solutions I've seen to this are to remove CAW, clear any remaining registry keys or files, and reinstall cleanly.

Katie Turner- Yes, as Ella said, you need to have your game working to have CAW working. It would have saved us a lot of time if you had mentioned that the game did not run! :D I know that the information you are being given is confusing and that there is a lot of it, but we have written our tutorials and guidelines based on a lot of years helping people and answering questions, so you have to do a lot of the work yourself by reading what we link you to and following instructions. Unfortunately, we can't come to your house and do it for you (if you want me to do that, it's £50 per hour and I'll fix your car, your plumbing and your roof too if you need it!) so you have to try things out yourself. :)

Ah, forgot to check that!

Mkay, then - pictorial confirmation of EIG working with BG 1.29 and CAW 1.13.7 only installed - per my setting last time. All is good and running! :up:

Ella, should we close this thread altogether? Not much point having this, since general problems and patching/ updating are dealt with in the other thread. :)As discussed with simsample, we were gonna wait until the next patch before making any decisions on locking this thread.
But, since today's patch 1.31 arrived, and with CAW still not updated, this workaround is still needed. I'll be on the lookout for the next CAW version in the coming days until after Showtime is released...

The way I'm reading this situation is : as long as EA remembers to release a CAW version whose CompatVersion matches the patch's Level No (http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:TS3_Patching_Versions#Understanding_Game_Levels) (the Level Column in the Patch_Table Wiki), this workaround is not needed. But for the interim until such new CAW updates are released, this workaround is still applicable (I just tested with patch 1.31 (level 15) and CAW 1.13.7 (CompatVersion 14) - Default.ini needed tweaking).

So, in summary, how to know which situation applies? Read Game Help:Patch_Table. If workaround needed for CAW, it would have the superscript as indicated.

The latest version of CAW needs basegame 1.31-1.33, so you need to patch that:
Game Help:TS3 Patching:Patch Download/Current
Read this first though:
Game Help:Issues with 1.3x Superpatcher

Also LN, HELS, AMB, WA & FLS are unpatched, which in the past has caused problems with CAW. So you could patch those too, to avoid issues.

I'm not so sure myself, so post back when you've tested. You may need TLS to use that version, as per the Patch Table.

If not, you may need to go back further to the LN 6.5 version (as this is the last pack you have), and the BG and CAW corresponding versions for that row. ie BG 1.22.9 and CAW 1.11.10

Why haven't you updated to CAW 1.16 and base game 1.33, may I know?

Fergie_F
13th Apr 2012, 06:20 PM
Well it didn't work with the CAW 1.11.12 as that took me back to the mis-matching versions error. With the newest game update, will that effect any CC.? It takes forever to download and update which is why I have been putting it off, The internet in my village can be incredibly slow, and that's just when it's working. Should I update my game as well?

simsample
13th Apr 2012, 09:50 PM
Yes, the best option is to fully patch the game (including your EPs) and the install the latest CAW. Your mods and CC would also have to be updated.

Fergie_F
14th Apr 2012, 07:28 PM
I think I've sorted it, CAW now works, but the actual game is now playing up, I've sorted out the CC and mods, some of the CC still isn't working how it used to before the update, but it still functions. But when I come to save and end the game it started saving and never finished... I left it about half an hour but when I came back it still said it was saving so I forced it to close withouot saving. But CAW now works, I now need to get used to it and sort out the actual game. Thanks for the help getting CAW working.

To update your mods, you just need to go back to where you got them from and download the latest version, assuming that the creator has updated them. If the mods are not updated then you need to remove them, as they could cause gameplay problems.

Alright, I have all of the below stuff, but not the Showtime expansion (yet), and not the Master Suite, Katy Perry, or Diesel stuff packs. Getting the same message as before, about the version being off. So, which files do I need to modify? Using Vista.

Base Game
GameVersion = 1.29.55.014001
CompatVersion = 14
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 11

World Adventures
GameVersion = 2.10.5.008001
CompatVersion = 8
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 5

Late Night
GameVersion = 6.5.1.011031
CompatVersion = 11
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 8

Ambitions
GameVersion = 4.7.4.010001
CompatVersion = 10
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 7

Generations
GameVersion = 8.0.152.011001
CompatVersion = 11
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 8

Pets
GameVersion = 10.0.96.013001
CompatVersion = 13
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 10

also Fast Lane, High End Loft, Outdoor Living, Town Life Stuff packs

CAW
GameVersion = 1.16.2.016037
CompatVersion = 16
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 13

Do I just need to patch the game to the latest, and is that going to cause issues if I don't have the latest expansion? Or should I go through and alter the files as before? I am planning to eventually get the Showtime expansion (kinda expecting it as a gift), not sure about all the stuff packs, but I want to make worlds in the meantime. Know the help I need is right here. TIA!

Hi LadyGreenEyes649, yes- you need to make sure each EP and SP is fully patched, as CAW seems to sometimes have problems with unpatched EPs (although this should not be a problem for playing Sims 3).

Check out the Patch table for the links to download the patches:
Game Help:Patch Table

If you click the 2011 'more info' button you will see the links to the last EP patches (as the later patches are only for the basegame). So try those first and see if that works for you. :)

Hi All,
i'm having problems running CAW. I've had problems for a long time now but I've put it to one side and just played other peoples pre made hoods but I'd rather like to get back to building my own. When I try to save (or any point really) i get the 'The Sims 3 Create a World has crashed - Attempted to read or write protected memory..yada yada' .. it won't run for more than 5 mins before it crashes. I've read various threads about CAW issues and they all seem to be pretty old apart from this one, so I guess most peoples are running properly now and I'm the slow coach of the simming world :-). I've checked my patches for all my games (I have every game installed apart from Katy Perry and Diesel) and they are all up to date, my default ini. files are all the same, so I don't think it's that either.

GameVersion = 1.18.3.017037
CompatVersion = 17
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 14

GameVersion = 1.36.45.017002
CompatVersion = 17
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 14

I'm really stuck as to what it is. I hadn't tried CAW since installing Showtime and when I launched it two days ago it said it wasn't compatible so I uninstalled it and redownloaded from the sims 3 site and thought 'Yay!' it might actually work now..but no, still no joy, I loaded the Sv lite world, tried 'save as' and it crashed again..I'm running 64bit and from what i've read LAA crashes are caused running 32bit, so I'm sat here scratching my head..
Could someone help?

Hi there ella,
Yep, followed all instructions. Cleared cashes, checked LAA stuff, patches are all up to date. It's a brand new install of CAW, so I opened up SV Lite, managed to 'save as' erased some of the routing, tried to save again and it crashed. I don't get any further than trying to save after 5 minutes.

Don't triple-post, please use the EDIT button if no one has responded on the thread.

So are both the game and CAW, CC free at this time? Everything is on vanilla settings, when you've worked through the FAQs and suggestions? That may mean it is the hardware and access controls looks like.
What Operating System, CPU, how much RAM and what GPU do you have? If you produce a DxDiag report, just copying those 4 lines would be sufficient, the lines with those models and information, not the whole report. Game Help:System Specs

It didn't work and I REALLY want to start on my world now, annoys me :(
Now what happened was that after I did everything with the compatibility and copying and pasting, it said I had to save the notefiles. so I tried to overwrite the old, uncompatible default file with the new as following the toturial. When I answered "yes" to the overwriting, a message sayin': "access denied" or such(I have an norwegian PC and a norwegian game, basically it said "ingen tilgang" which means about that). What did I do wrong? Why does it deny me access to overwrite the friggin' file? :/ Would be great with fast answers, It's getting on my nerves :/
- Layla

PS: Maybe you'll need some info about my PC to check out the problem. :!:
The system it runs is Windows 7, it's a Toshiba Laptop.
This is the three lines in the "default" file of CAW:

GameVersion = 1.18.3.017037
CompatVersion = 17
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 14

And this is the default file lines from TS3:

GameVersion = 1.38.151.018002
CompatVersion = 18
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 15

Now I edited this like it was said in toturial, but it wouldn't save, so this is the current state of the files. :help:

@LenaShan and Wolfbandit- the problem is that EA have not released the updated CAW for gameversion 1.38.

They usually take a few days after a patch to get a new version out, but someone on the Sims 3 forums mentioned that EA may be on vacation until Tuesday (I don't know if that's accurate or not).

So you'll just have to wait until the new version is released- there is no way to tell from the download page, but if you look on the Sims 3 site CAW forum you'll get a good idea of when it's updated by the posts there (you'll see 10001 posts complaining that CAW doesn't work until they do update!).

There is no way to make the old version of CAW work with gameversion 1.38- this trick will not work for that.

I have searched (I feel) the whole wide web for a solution to my problem - Your game is not compatible with this version of blah blah blah Create-a-World. I uninstalled, reinstalled, uninstalled, reinstalled forever, days on end, but no. (Bear in mind that I even installed Windows via Bootcamp on my NEW MacBook Pro JUST for the CAW!)

And somehow, I found info on CompatVersion and WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion and checked. Both Diesel stuff and CAW was the same, but it still wouldn't work. But nobody had had THAT problem.. everybody else got their compatibilityproblem fixed. (sons of **). So, in friggin desperacy, I checked the default file on Sims 3 base game. And, seeing it was different from CAW and Diesel, I changed it so they'd all match.

AND IT WORKS!!!!!! I am bloody serious. I thought I was hallucinating, but it actually works.

I will now be titled the queen of CAW-fix. Or not.

But for all of those who, like me, want to send a seriously harsh letter to EA for this troubly-but-awesome-program, try it.

PS: I registered on modthesims.info just to say this. Now I'll play God. :king:

PPS: I tried to upload a photo just to prove it, but I couldn't be bothered searching for how to prtscrn on Windows on Mac. Gah.

@LenaShan and Wolfbandit,
If you cannot save the edited Default.ini directly from withing Notepad into the Program Files path, means you're getting blocked by UAC. Save it to Desktop or elsewhere and then, move and replace the original copy (already backed up I hope) with this edited version.

This workaround still works, I was just using it the past few days, when I can't hold off patching to 1.38 anymore as I need to see the differences before I install SuperNatural.

But, by the time you read this, 1.19 is available. :)

I downloaded the latest file version 1.18.3.170037 and rewrite the last two lines of the file on "Default" in accordance with the final version of my Sims 3:

I came here to post my opinion about the CAW.
I downloaded the latest file version 1.18.3.170037 and rewrite the last two lines of the file on "Default" in accordance with the final version of my Sims 3:
CompatVersion = 19
WorldBuilderCompatibilityVersion = 16 (last updated 1.42)
Previously, I had tried to start the CAW, but without success, but after "upgrade" the Default, lol, I'm usually working on it!!!
Thanks so much to all of the people here who had the same troubles and who had posted solutions!

There is a new version of Caw out today, Nov. 1st. The last one had some bugs, so be sure to uninstall the old one.

I have the latest caw & it'll still give you that incompatibility screen unless you make the necessary changes for the patch that you have. I should know cuz I just recent re-downloaded this tool. :gjob:

New patch, same ole issue. Made a new blog post about today's (Jan 8th) CAW 1.18.7 version. http://t.co/yfBAC8m7

[update]
New version 1.18.8 does not need the INI edits anymore.

Thanks for the info Ella, they always seem to release the CAW update about a day after they release the patch. Why they can't just release them together, I'll never know. T'would make things a lot easier, especially since we have no way of telling which version of CAW they have available for download (unless we actually go ahead and download it).

It's a good thing I found this thread. Since I still don't have the latest expansion packs my Create a Word was giving me this error that you posted in the first picture.

Thanks, this worked for me.
