Is there a way to 'create' strays?

I have a couple of pets in my sim bin that I'd love to see roaming free without an owner in my worlds, so I was wondering, is there a way to turn a pet into a stray?

Not got Pets yet but my dog ( a Westie) goes bonkers when someone breaks into my house and the alarm goes off!

I don't know for sure if this will do exactly what you want, but I would check out Twallan's Register mod. Wild animals are handled like service sims, so that mod controls them.
