View Full Version : So, am I the only one that thinks dogs were neglected?

I mean really, dogs have just as much show capability as horses, yet there are no dog competition obstacles, no showing platform; heck, the only thing they get is a toy box and two dog houses... WTF EA!??

They must have been so busy with horses, they neglected the dogs... and cats even... At least that's just how I see it.

I was expecting to be able to show my dogs, have a breeder profession, become a vet if I wanted... There is just so much EA didn't do, it's maddening.

So this brings me to a question as I'm writing this... Is it possible to mod the game to allow the buying and selling of puppies/kittens/foals, make a breeder profession, and objects to show dogs (realistically)?

It would have been cool if the dogs could have used the jumps and stuff. A vet career too, or maybe a groomer. Something related.
I do think the cats are pretty good... But there is a bit less to do with the dogs. I've been teaching tricks but there isn't really much point to it!

I do wish there was a full career for dogs and cats like with horses. Beyond veterinarian, that should be included too. But, like, dog breeder, or agility competitions, or something. As is the only way to make money with dogs and cats is to sell the things they bring you. And as much as the idea of a nine hundred dollar gecko amuses me, it's not really the same.

Exactly, there has to be some way that we can add all that good stuff ourselves into the game, and I'm pretty darn sure it's possible... Heck, if someone would just point me in the right direction I'd be all over making a breeder profession so fast it would be out next week!

Actually you CAN make money off of breeding pets, I did forget the idea of getting money for adopting pets out. But if you do that you'll be listed as unemployed.

Exactly, unemployed sims are lame... lol no offense to those on the job hunt.
But you can only make the money by adopting them out, not selling them directly to someone....

I ever heard (or in this case, see) someone write that you can have a dog show?

I think the reason EA didn't make it a career is there's no associated skill. You know, how the selfemployed option comes up once you have one skillpoint. Horsesims have Riding. If it's possible to add a skill in Sims 3 (haven't noticed) or bypass that requirement it should be fairly straightforward to write an additional series of career stages. Especially since self-employment is strictly by amount of money earned, not by skillup requirements or opportunities.

There are custom skills in the sims 3 - well at least 2 - assasination and magic. But I imagine they're very ahrd to make, and I haven't seen either of these turned into more structured self employed careers like Horseman/woman.

I agree that dogs were very undeveloped in this game, there is very little to do with them. It seems silly that they wouldn't have made an agility course and skill for dogs. I also miss the interactive show tables from TS1. Where a judge would come around, as it is there are shows at the stadium rabbit hole, but those just aren't that fun.

I also really hate that you can't sell your pets anymore (Except for horses), I can understand why EA wanted to remove the pet stores for buying cats/dogs, but it seems silly to remove our option to sell.

I kind of wish they'd made a skill to go along with each species of animal - it would make sense. They each require skill to care for and train/raise in real life. I mean, come on, a dog training skill doesn't seem that out there does it?

Twallan's custom career tutorial: http://www.the-isz.com/nraas/index.php?/topic/11-making-new-distributable-careers-on-using-careers-phase-eight/

Look forward to seeing your mod next week! :)

As for adding a new skill through modding, you'd want to start with the script modding tutorials here: http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=Tutorials:TS3_GeneralModding

Besides the existing custom skills mentioned above, there is also Twallan's Kama Simtra, an extension to his Woohooer mod. If you want to learn to mod something like that, the best way is to look at the code in the mods that have already been made.

In general, the best place to get help and find information about modding here is through the resources in the Create menu :)

How did I forget that one? It's probably the one my sims use the most!

I have no computer skills what-so-ever, but I may settle down and have a read to see if I can understand enough to give one ago.

Yeah, they're called 'Best in show' or something, and it's cats and horses too. I've only seen one actually appear during play though. It's a little blue star like the neighbourhood grill-aphon things.

HAHAHA! Thanks, I don't know if I'll actually be able to make it by next week (i'm in the middle of unpacking; we just moved) but I will start working on it

So, is there anyone else interested in making Pets... Better? If so I'll make a group for us to start making new mods and stuff... If so, lets pull the trigger and get started! :D

We're talking about EA, folks! The EP seemed too good to not have any problems or missing stuff! I mean, when they FINALLY make something so awesome, they just HAVE to screw it up somehow. I got used to it. Haven't you?

The Expansion Pack is still, by far, the best they have made for The Sims 3.

And then you think about The Sims 2, there were no pet shows or anything of that sort. So we can only really do that kind of stuff with horses? At least it's there anywhere. Again, don't forget The Sims 2 Pets. The Sims 3 Pets gives it a run for its money.

I read somewhere about training dogs tricks, you can go to a community lot and put on a show for tips. Was that true, or was I hallucinating?

Going to SimsVIP to read up on that. If I find it I will link.

EDIT: This was from the game guide at SimsVIP about 2/3 down the page: http://simsvip.com/?page_id=2101
Trick Exhibition (aka: Dog Trick Shows) is a new interaction available to a Sim when interacting with a Dog that has learned at least 4 Tricks. This interaction will allow a Dog to show off their tricks to Surrounding Sims. Performing them will increase their experience (per trick) and help a Dog prepare for Dog Shows. If you take your Dog to a nearby location (for example the Park), your Sim can put down a tip jar and have the Dog perform a trick exhibition. The better skilled the dog, the more simoleons you can make.

There are not any skill challenges related to Tricks, however the game will keep stats on how many times the Dog has performed a specific trick via the skill journal.

I agree it's the best, it's just that it still has that soft feeling of unfinished business, you know? It's less than it was for the other EPs, but it's still there.

It's got sort of a "Okay, I installed Pets, now let's go find a bunch of mods to make it actually work the way I want to" vibe.

I mean you can't really blame them on the pet item side, seeing as they were more focused on the features side, which also has a few hiccups, but overall once you combine everything in the EP, it definitely surpasses every other EP so far..We just have to stop at the small things and look at the big :)

I do agree that dogs, and even cats too, are a little neglected. But hey, at least they're finally in the game, right?

Too little content? I think not. Actually, Pets had the most useful content and the most useful features when compared to any TS3 EP released as of yet. Sure the PET related objects are a little lacking, but, with TS3's handy Create-A-Style tool, we now have the freedom to recolor all of the pet related items at will. This is a feature we didn't have before in TS2 Pets or TS Unleashed.

Agree. In spite of the faults it's still easily the best expansion they've had yet.

Dunno about putting on a show, but there are trick competitions. Sometimes a park will have one. I didn't go though because your dog needs to know 5 tricks and he only knew 2 at the time.
