View Full Version : How do you like the faded painting look of Sims 3 faces?

I'm still trying to understand why they look like faded paintings.. lol. I decided to give another shot and convert my Sims 2 Exorcist Novel adaptation into Sims 3 but there's just no way I can make the Sims 3 characters look real like I can in Sims 2.
The only thing I can do is clone my Sims 2 faces into Sims 3 bodies for storytelling pix but I love to video shoot scenes, :( I wish The Sims 3 sims didn't look like faded paintings & that they had better animations. :(
(just look at this, she looks so ..I don't know..such a lack of personality.)
http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a295/sofia_123/Screenshot-69.jpg
Now look at my Sims 2 faces of Chris & Regan, they look so much better and a lot more charming than Sims 3 ever could! Ahh.. it just isn't fair.

COULD you please tell me WHY you like the way that Sims 3 sims look?

I honestly don't like the Sims 2 faces you have up there. They are good, for Sims 2, but they look very artificial to me, like cartoons. Sims 3 faces are not ultra-realistic, but they look more real to me than Sims 2 faces. Why do I like them? They look 'alive' to me. I don't mean absolutely realistic, although with new skins, sliders, and various skin decorations, I can get a lot closer to real than I could with Sims 2. I love the animations, the fact that the heads are not long and skinny with wide foreheads...at least not as wide compared to the jaw as Sims 2. I sometimes miss Sims 2 because of all the great custom content and OFB, but one of the reasons I don't go back (besides recolorable items and the open world) is the look of the sims.
Of course, I would never dream of going to the Sims 2 section of the website and imply that there is something weird about those who prefer Sims 2 sims to Sims 3. To each his/her own!! Consider it grand that you can play Sims 2 if that is what you want to do. :)

What?? You don't like my sims 2 versions of Shirley MacLaine & daughter Sachi?? Everyone says they are freaking adorable!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw0OSpwKbIs&feature=channel_video_title I can't even adapt this scene to Sims 3!
AND, btw, what I want is to adapt The Exorcist Novel to Sims 3 because the graphics and atmosphere look better than Sims 2! But oh my gosh are you seriously saying that Sims 3 faces look real?? Have you ever tried to do a close-up of their faces? They just fade! I never got the feeling that these sims are real! Everyone who sees my Sims 2 version of The Exorcist say they look a lot better than Sims 3 and that sims 3 are creepy looking.
I honestly just want to understand why you like their faces, I don't want to start any fights over it! Just wondering!
Also, what I did with the picture above (with her next to the bed) was clone my Sim 2 Sachi' more defined nose and mouth to the sim 3 Regan!
Would also like to add that I agree that the Sims 3 faces look "alive" in CAS, but not in game at all.

It's all down to the skill of the creator and the opinion of the viewer. There are so many sliders and masks and makeup to aid in creation now. I try my best and my sims look realistic enough for me, which is fine, cos I don't share them. Perhaps if you're trying to tell a story you should just try and work with the level of reality you can achieve and focus on the plot..

There are tons of skintones, makeup and hair to make a sim looking unique. For my taste. It's time consuming but possible. In the end, it should fit the sims 3 graphic style.
In the attached picture you can see my colleagues and me for my office-jungle-camp story. All colleagues can identify with their sims version.

I have tons of cc skintones and all of that and it doesn't help at all with the way they look in game. I'm telling you that when I do a close up of their faces they fade and you're actually doubting?
I have sims details set to high but just look at this!

How on earth can I get the feeling that she's "real"??
And here's another with all lights in the room turned off, it makes her look even the more awful.

This is her in CAS, she doesn't look like a faded painting there at all.

Sure, but the characters of Chris & daughter Regan need to have that certain cute look like Shirley MacLaine & her daughter Sachi (they were the models for the characters). Regan needs to have a defined little butterball nose and clear-cut small mouth like my sims 2 version of her has.
This is the skintone I used for my Sims 2 versions of them: http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=271929 and I can't find a similar one for Sims 3, so if anyone knows of a similar skintone then please tell me!

They're different games. S3 Sims won't look nearly as good in S2 and vice versa. I think that S3 sims look miles better than in S2, you have a lot more control and they end up looking nicer if you cater to the game instead of forcing S2 standards on it.
And also - you need a camera mod to allow greater movement and closeups without fading. I'm not sure where the most updated version is.

What?? You don't like my sims 2 versions of Shirley MacLaine & daughter Sachi?? Everyone says they are freaking adorable!
Well, obviously not EVERYONE!! LOL
Like I said, you did a good job, but you had little to work with in my opinion. You asked for our opinions..so accept that not everyone likes the same thing you like. ;) If that bothers you, don't ask! LOL
It appears you tried too hard to make your sims look like Sims 2 sims and so they do not look very realistic. The eyes are far too big, the freckles are too much, the face shapes need help, and the hair is way too big for a child. However, we all have our favorite styles and I don't judge yours. I just think it is very difficult to get that Sims 2 look in Sims 3.
By the way, the differences between CAS and Game have more to do with lighting. EA really screwed up the lighting in Sims 3, especially outdoor lighting. I think my sims look fine indoors. (BTW, the guy on the bike was not made by me! He is amazing, huh?)

Yeah and you're obviously in the minority.
What's there not to like about this edit? All I did was clone the sims 2 cute little butterball nose & upper lip of the mouth to sims 3 face. You saying that it doesn't look good is beyond me because it looks a lot more defined than the original nose and mouth.

I don't like your child sim, her head looks too huge but I do like the woman & the guy, even though they look like wax and artifical to me too.

Why don't you use the pinned on the top of forum: Official TS3 Opinions, Reviews, Likes and Dislikes Thread? We had so many comparison threads like this and it's no end because people have different taste, I can't persuade you to think that your little girl is ugly and I don't want her to go near my game.
I'm sure many people who are playing Sims 3 have solid opinion about why they like Sims 3 face, if not, they just have to switch back to their old favorites and go discussing this with you in Sims 2 forum.
With sliders hack and CC, I love how creators of Sims 3 could tweak out not only unique but also extremely gorgeous sims IMHO.
If you want evidence, there are tons of pic in the Pictures section:

Exactly.. and it shouldn't be that way. I should be able to do a better adaptation of The Exorcist novel to Sims 3 because this game was supposed to be an upgraded version of Sims 2. With Sims 2 and its cc, animations hacks, etc, I'm able to adapt almost every scene of The Exorcist Novel. I really wish I could do it with Sims 3 because, like I said, I like the environmental graphics design better.
Umm..lol.. what's there to disagree with what I said?

There's also a mod that forces the game to use higher quality textures, here. (http://awtmk.blogspot.com/2011/07/s3hq.html) However, if your computer just can't handle higher graphics settings, this isn't going to help you.. and neither is making a thread where you ask for help, but then disagree with everyone's opinions or advice.
As for the poses/animations, there are tons of custom ones out there, you just have to be willing search for yourself. And if it is truly THAT big of a deal to you, you can always just make your own. Poses aren't that hard.
Or, you know, go back to TS2.. because no one is FORCING you to play TS3 or do this re-make.

I don't think the "disagrees" come from your comparison of TS2 to TS3. I think, and this is just my own feeling and opinion, that they come from all of the CAPITALIZATION and !!!!????? and statements like these;
"Yeah and you're obviously in the minority."
"What's there not to like about this?"
and "I'm telling you that when I do a close up of their faces they fade and you're actually doubting?"
We are trying to help you, giving you exactly what you've made this thread asking for, yet your tone is coming off a little.. accusatory, ungrateful, rude maybe? Again, just my impression, here.
Also, you have every right to believe that your sims are the most adorable, gorgeous sims that were ever created in the history of anything EVER. But we also have the right to think they are absolutely hideous. There is no need to get defensive or angry about a difference of opinion.
So If I download that mod will the Sims look in game like they do in CAS?
I don't use that mod, and never have, so I can't tell you for sure. But it would at least be worth a try, don't you think? The new version of the mod looks pretty simple and useful, and much easier to turn off/on when you need it.
edit: Okay, here's a picture of a sim from my game. It's not an extreme closeup, but the best I have on-hand. This sim was born in-game by story progression - I didn't make him, I didn't edit him, I only happened to see him walking around a bar one night. I say that because it means I didn't spend hours messing with sliders, he's not wearing any special makeup (only CC skintone), or anything like that - he's just naturally beautiful ;) As you can see, there's plenty of detail, and I don't think he looks "faded" at all. I don't use any mods to affect the textures in game, and my computer is pretty awesome but it is by no means a "gaming computer" - I'm on a laptop for heaven's sake.
My point is that TS3 can and does produce good-looking sims. There can be HUGE differences in the game by making small changes in your graphics settings (in game and on your graphics card's settings), make good use of quality CC, etc etc. Basically everything that has already been suggested in this thread.

Something you're not taking into account is that in TS2, with mods, you could layer makeups. I did this all the time to get more definition in the appearance of my sims. (Can't tell you how many "blushes" some of them were wearing, between the nose shapers, the nose tips, nostril enhancers, etc...) Since we can't do that in TS3 (as far as I know -- is there a mod to allow you to wear more than one blush at a time, anyone?), you have to pick and choose what you shape and enhance. If I wanted eyeliner, a full-length nose shaper, a custom makeup which added pores, and eye bags on this sim -- which I did -- then I kinda had to forgo anything to enhance the nostril shape and size.
For me, highly defined nostrils aren't the be-all and end-all. Your mileage may vary...
But getting back to the point, you're comparing TS2, where you had unlimited ability to layer special effects to TS3, where you're limited to about five slots for makeup AND special effects. If you can't get a decent looking sim from the sculpt, you're pretty much screwed in TS3.
This sim of yours doesn't even have detailed nostrils.
I'd love to give you a smart-alack comeback here, but I'm trying to refrain from being a beotch.

I also do not mean to hurt your feelings about your sims. As I said several times, you did a good job on them. They are just not my style and they were not when I did play Sims 2. But if you like them, then why does it matter that we do?
I think you are getting yourself worked up by all this and getting a lot of attention. I hope you work it all out for yourself and continue to enjoy your game.

I don't want someone to dislike them, I just really want to understand how you don't find their faces cartoony. All of the pictures I've seen here look cartoony to me. Do you like their eyebrows? They all have that painted look on that makes them look fake.
Some of the Sims 3 models I actually like are from ButterflySims:

Her eyebrows look natural and the eyes too.
So.. the reasons you gave me for liking the sims 3 appearance are actually the reasons why I don't like them, they're just too cartoony and plastic-y looking to me.

I love that your example of a non-cartoony Sims is modeled after an anime character. And looks nothing like any human being I've ever seen.
Seriously, though, both Sims 2 and Sims 3 Sims are more cartoony than natural looking. Are you able to make your Exorcist characters in Sims 2 without using CC skin, hair, eyes or makeup? People who want realism in Sims tend to seek out find CC that will help them achieve that look, and you can find tons of it for both games.
Some people actually prefer cartoony Sims, and find the more realistic look kind of creepy.

So I went back in my game and took a few more close-ups of the same sim. Added some lighting to that which was in the EA-decorated house; moved the existing lighting around.
Does this look cartoony to you? I'm not asking to be a snot or anything; I'd really like to know.

For the record, when TS3 came out I HATED how the sims looked. I thought of them as disgusting pig-people. But about a year after release, I started seeing custom skins and sliders being used to great effect. I now think TS3 sims can look quite attractive, given the proper use of CC makeup and extended sliders.

She doesn't look like the most realistic sim I've seen. The lips are the most realistic thing on her. As far as (a lot of) sims go, she's pretty.. the others look freakish.
- this is my opinion, others may differ.
Edit: sorry, apart from PunkyBreester's sim, he's at least simishly handsome.

Well I think Sims 3 sims are waaay more realistic looking then the stick figures that are in the Sims 2. I've been following these forums and decided, since everyone kept saying how awesome Sims 2 sims look in comparison and how more gratifying gameplay was, to actually buy the game.
I hate it, maybe I'm spoiled by the open world, amazing graphics, and unlimited customization.
Maybe if I had played it when it first came out instead of playing Sims 3 first, I would understand and feel your sentiments. But seriously, the Sims from sims 2 are bland skinny and ugly. You're either fat or skinny in the Sims 2. That's not playing with life... Not to mention the graphics just seem so outdated. People rarely like to step out of there comfort zone, so maybe that's why I found the Sims 2 just odd. But I definitely can't see how when comparing Sims 2 sims with Sims 3 sims, that Sims 2 sims could ever win... They look terrible. And I have a pretty good rig, and a great graphics card.

When I first started up Sims 3 i really thought that the sims looked hideous.. Then as different modders started releasing skins, sliders and makeup The sims started to look better.
Personally, I enjoy the fact that the sliders give me a lot more maneuvering room to get a sim the way i want it.
The open game board means less loading screens to sit through.
Though I do miss the cut videos of the first kiss. In all I do enjoy the sims 3. As a side note. I wished Will Wright would have at least kept a hand in the sims franchise.

She looks 'painted on' like every other ingame Sims I see. Their facial details are a lot better in CAS. If you take a pic of your sim in CAS and then compare it to an in-game pic, you'll see the difference.
I really wish they would look like they do in CAS when they enter the game.

Lol, I know, but I really like that skintone, eyebrows and eyes.
No, of course I couldn't make the characters without using CC and I have tried to find cc for Sims 3 that would help me achieve the look I want, I'm just not able to achieve it no matter how much I tweak their faces in CAS. I don't get it.. I can't make a version of Shirley & Sachi that look remotely close to how they look. :(

Some people tweak and tweak sims for hours getting them to how they want them to look.
It takes time to get a handle on all the sliders, so just give it time.
You'll find after some practice you'll be more satisfied with the results.

The point is, you can't make a Shirley or Sachi that look right to you in Sims 2, either, without the right CC. So, the fact that you can't find the right CC for Sims 3 is not a fault of the game or its Sims.

Yes but that doesn't change the way Sims 3 look ingame. They look like paintings that have lost their original good quality. Even if I managed to achieve the right look of Shirley & Sachi' in CAS they wouldn't look anything like it once they entered the game.

You're either fat or skinny in the Sims 2.
Correction: You're either skinny or have a bit of a pot belly in Sims 2. Only with the Sims 3 can you truly create fat sims.

As people have stated here, there are lighting issues in the game that can make Sim's skin look off.
But this 'faded painting' thing you keep going on about...well, I don't get what you even mean by that. My Sims look the same in game as they do in CAS.
But if you really don't like the way Sims 3 Sims look, even with CC, then why don't you stick with Sims 2?
I know you've already said, you like the atmosphere of Sims 3 better for what you are trying to do, you just don't like the way the Sims look. So maybe you could go to the Sims 2 forum and ask how the people there can like the 'faded painting' atmosphere of Sims 2?

Eh, me either. Here's a faded painting. I don't really see much of a difference between the Sims 2 Shirley and kid she made, over the Sims 3 one, they're both creepy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU9VCQfY2Qs&feature=related) .

Painted on eyebrows are easy to fix..download custom ones. As people have said over and over, your Sims 2 sims contain a lot of custom content as well. It is amazing to me how insulted you were when folks didn't like your Sims 2 sims but how you continue to insult other people's Sims. This has to be one of the most unusual threads I have read! LOL
I suggest you start yourself a Shirley Sim with Sims 3. Go to Creator Feedback under Create and ask people to help you make her look realistic (although I am not sure you want realistic based on your comments). You will be amazed at the results. Of course, Shirley with the pursed mouth walking around in the game seems a bit odd unless you are using her for a movie. I have found the Creator Feedback forum to be a great place with really patient helpful people. You would be getting good constructive criticism there that would help you to build a better Sim rather than all this silly banter here (not that anyone is silly, just that we are all repeating ourselves to no avail). You might actually move forward with this issue and fix the problems you are having with the sims. I suspect though that this is all fun and games here. ;)

As for the no fading thing, there's actually an in game cheat you can use to turn it off and you don't need a mod.

When did I insult other people's Sims? What I said was that they look ''painted on'' in game and cartoony, I never said they looked creepy or hideous. You're the ones who keep insulting mine for no reason. How can anyone even say that a cute portrait of a sims 2 daughter mimicking her mother's expressions looks hideous? It's innocent & sweet, there's nothing hideous about it.
"I suggest you start yourself a Shirley Sim with Sims 3. Go to Creator Feedback under Create and ask people to help you make her look realistic (although I am not sure you want realistic based on your comments)."
Of course I want her to look realistic as much as possible!
Thanks.

Umm...you asked us! LOL That is a reason. When you ask for opinions, you should be willing to accept them. No one said you were a bad sim-maker. They just did not like your style. And you are right, you didn't 'actually' insult people either, but you seem to not accept it when others do to you what you do to them. That is what I meant..in a subtle sort of way.
I also notice that you did not respond to my idea to take your Sims 3 sim to Creator Feedback. If you really want help in making a nice Sims 3 sim, this is where you should go. I am actually surprised the moderators here kept this open for as long as they did.
Hideous, like beautiful, is subjective. I don't think your sims are hideous but I also don't think they are beautiful or cute. Each person has their own opinions. It is important to accept that and focus on what you like...and not worry about the opinions of others. But it is also important to be accepting of constructive criticism. It is the only way to get better. I have seen some beautiful sims on this thread and a lot of people are trying to help you. Please take advantage of that. :)
I just saw that you have a LOT of EPs for Sims 3. Did you just figure out that you don't like the game now? LOL
