View Full Version : non-default plants

I am working on some non-default plants for a world build. My first attempt was to clone the willow tree and I ended up with great results, but, it was putting the modified willow in place of the other willows inworld. I don't want this to happen. So, I'm wondering if anyone can assist me with creating a non-default plant from a cloned default? Or is this possible?
Also I wish to make some of the textures glow, and I understand this would most likely require access to a shader setting somewhere, but I've yet to see anyone try this on foliage objects like bushes and trees yet. I've got most of the tool sets to do it, just don't know where to start and was hoping someone might have some ideas that could aim me in the right direction.
Any suggestions for either of these would be greatly appreciated. I'll be sharing some results soon!

What I mean by great results is I've managed to make a clone of the default willow change the texture. IE a Purple leafed willow tree with orange red trunk and branches.... I will be making ones with my own leaves and trunk designs but want to make sure they don't cover default trees. For some reason the game puts them in over ALL the willows - since they were cloaned from the default willow tree file for some reason. Thus...ALL willows in my game appear purple with orange-red trunks/branches. So apparently I need to somehow make it a non-default related object.
I am also wanting to add glowing bits to the textures of the leaves and so am seeking the direction to reach the shader settings that will allow me to assign a texture to "glow" in the game or to somehow add it as another layer to the mesh files. I believe it is possible.

Unless someone knows something I don't it isn't gonna be as easy to add that kind of effect to a tree object as it is to others. The shaders are in the MLOD/MODL resources and speedtree items don't have those resources available to edit.

I gave up on cloning the speedtree items and just clone potted plants. There was a problem with the meshes or was it a vbxy? hmm. Don't remember. I haven't tried to clone the trees since WA - hmm... I'm curious now. opening S3oc... lol. There is a Showtime version of S3oc and s3pe! GET IT! Ok. I have to update my meshing software prior to looking at the packages...
If you wanted a light emitting tree, you could clone a floor lamp and use the 'bulb' group parts for the glowy bits. You'd have to watch your poly count if you were making a large tree but that might give you a nice alien-glowy feel for your trees. The trunk could use the stand group part of the lamp. This is one of the items on my LONG list of ideas. So, if you want to test the theory, do it! I need glowy alien trees for my LunarLakes world. :)
edited: Ok. I just installed the new S3oc and S3pe tools and cloned some speedtree items. There are no MLODs or image files. How are you recoloring them? I'd like to know. Does TSRW do it? (loading TSRW now)... ok... UPdating TSWR to 2.0.35.0
ah-ha.. So TSRW allows you to see the component .tga parts I see you could import new composite colors into 2 .tga mesh parts.... All teh exported parts are speedtree extractions...
Hmm... So how did you do it?

Hmm... So how did you do it?The topic of speedtree texture changes was discussed here awhile ago:
http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=3388708
Things have prolly changed a bit since then but if they did only for the easier :)
A couple things...Speedtree is a proprietary product. Even if you manage to clone/edit/package a tree I think there could be legal issues if you tried to share it without first having an agreement (with lotsa money exchanging hands) with the Speedtree people. This is, most likely, why people working on tools for the game haven't focused too much on making it possible to work with the Speedtee items more fully. Also, if you clone another kind of object to make a tree it will not have the same movement the EA (ie. Speedtree) trees have. Personally I think that's not such a bad thing but opinion on that may vary.
