Because Starlight shores is not really working well on my system (sounds like it has serious routing issues among several other problems) I wanted to make my own venues in another town, like Apaloosa plains. But I don't want a huge number of NPCs spawning for all the venues - and I think that having several different venues just doesn't fit in with the town.
Can you get by with just a coffee house and maybe an outdoor park with a stage? Or do you actually need the 5 - 6 venues that came with starlight shores to get to level 10 without a lot of pain?

I would also like to know this as well so as to delete some of the venues to make room for clubs, any help appreciated. My current clubs are empty in Starlight Shores and I suspect it is because of all the venues requiring sims. My showtime venues are well supported with sims (up to 10) but clubs have 0 to 2.

You don't need any venues at all to advance your sim to level 10. "Perform for tips" works just fine.

And the sing-a-grams too.

One big park, one coffeehouse, Two or more live show venues and Two or more private show venues will be fine - early on, you will need to have more than one those types of show venues to audition in, and those two venue types (live show and private venues) are the really good sources of income. You don't really need Big show venue's, but the income from performing there can get crazy big. The income from doing 2 excellent performances in Private Show Venues per week is more than sufficient to support a family or a swank bachelor lifestyle. You can also throw parties at Private Show venues.
