I heard on another forum that if you leave your current household to play another one, your sims will lose their lifetime progress. Is this true?

Depends on how you do it, if using a mod that have the ability to change active household, they won't but if doing the normal way through edit town they be will reseted and thus loose any progression.

Also depends what you mean by "lifetime progress". By default, they lose opportunities and dreams. They used to lose inventory items too, but I think that's been patched - it doesn't happen to me, but I had a mod to fix that before the patch, so I wouldn't necessarily notice the difference.
btw... nice avatar, Belzader. Mine has a border though! :giggler:

As whiterider noted : It depends on what you are referring to as "lifetime progress"
You will lose the Tally value for your current Lifetime Wish if you use the standard method to switch households, since that value is stored with your Dreams (which are wiped on switch).
There are mods available that allow you "Retain Dreams and Opportunities" when switching households though.

And yes, the "nightly inventory purge" approach was replaced a long time ago, with an even more annoying (from my perspective at least) "purge the item immediately upon being added to an inactive inventory" approach.
However, that does mean you will not lose your sim's inventory items between household switches.

I use to have that on when using one.. after awhile switching families game got sluggish, i switch quite alot, so not really a good idea to do so.
@whiterider: yea, i like my avatar very much, wasn't until i was checking your nocurfew mod if compatible with ShowTime i saw that you had the same  i use to have larger pic where there was a text "It's what's inside that counts" but i think got lost in a OS reinstall
