Basically, the custom content has been downloaded and I'm pretty sure it has all been correctly downloaded, extracted and installed. The sims themselves do show up in the sim bin and the thumbnail is that of the custom content and what I want. However, when I click on that thumbnail the sim shown is totally different and doesnt look anything like the custom one. Any ideas?

In what ways is the sim different?

The sim looks like one that can be made without any custom content.

I printscreened a thingy i hope this helps. When I click on the sim dexter it comes up with this guy who is obviously not dexter, it does this with other sims too :(

It's hard to tell because the screenshot is so small and dark, but that looks like it IS the Dexter sim (I have him too), but without his custom hair (which was one of my creations), and possibly also without his custom eyebrows and stubble that came with the sim. It may be that you forgot to install the custom content, so you need to double-check that you've installed any custom content that came with those sims that are showing up 'wrong', as well as any custom content that the creator said you need to download separately and gave a link to. Hopefully that will solve the problem with all of your problem sims!

I did download the custom content but I really don't think this is the sim, I'm sorry its dark but the sim here is wearing lipstick and blue eyeshadow :/ if it were the things that just needed downloaded they have been downloaded and as they were .packages I put them in the mods/packages folder is this correct?

Well, custom skintones and hairs often don't show up even if you have downloaded them. Other content should work - but if it doesn't, why not just put it on the sim yourself, save the updated sim to the bin, and then delete the original?
