Jamie double checked the results of the pregnancy test. It was positive. And the only one who could be the father was that new guy who had been hanging around the town lately. There was something odd about him. Sweet, in a way, but odd. He was a perfect gentleman, though. She had been the one to initiate everything, including the first kiss. If she didn't know better she would have sworn he didn't know what a kiss was! And now he had gotten her pregnant! Well, he was going to have to marry her, as soon as she could find him!

But when she went to where his house was, neither he, nor his house was there. She spent the day looking for him, and finally decided that he had vanished as quickly as he had appeared.

But when she went to the lake to be by herself for a while, Xar was there fishing. He stopped and came over to her, startling her.





"I have some news, and I don't know how you are going to take it, but you are going to be a father!" She smiled at him.





"Really? How did that happen?"

Is he honestly that stupid? "Remember when we were together on the beach? That was when it happened."

"I suppose we shouldn't be together anymore for a while, then."





"WHAT! What about your baby!"

"Exactly. You will be a lot happier and safer if your child is not around one of my kind. He will be odd. There will be magic in his blood and he will see things in an odd way. But without a dark faerie influence he will not become the monster that he might otherwise be." He winked. "And it will only be a century or two until he matures enough to be off on his own. We can wait that long, can't we?"

"A century or two! I won't live that long!"

His face fell. "Oh. So THAT's why affairs with mortals are forbidden!"
