I updated the countdown timer to give 8 more days for round 4. let me know how everyone is with this, I can easily make it two weeks if need be.

Hello!
I'm still here, making very slow progress with my round 3 play-along house. I think I've finally finished decorating it, so it's just being furnished now. As of now, I've got it about a third furnished, and I've still got about §27K budget to spend so it should work. In real life we're cleaning up after a severe mouse infestation (of which muridae's avatar constantly reminds me!), so my time for Simming is a bit limited. And, when I do get to load the game, I really, really want to play rather than build! I suppose that says something about me. I think I see building as a necessary chore, when what I really want to do is hang out with my Sims and have fun with them. Especially when my Simming time is limited. However I really do have to finish this house: quite apart from this contest, until I finish it, the Curious brothers have nowhere to live. And with two very young children, I can't leave them homeless!!
As for round 4, by far the simplest thing for me to do is to move the Singles into an empty house. I currently have two empty houses in Strangetown. One is the big barracks-style house at 57 Road to Nowhere, next door to the Grunts. The other one is a single storey house at 111 Road to Nowhere. However I think the latter is probably not an Maxis house, but one I built myself when I first played Strangetown. Here's a picture of it:
Looking at it, I think I based it on a mirror image of the Maxis "Ranch Retreat" bin house. Could some one please confirm that it's not an original Maxis Strangetown house. The house next door at 105 Road to Nowhere, is of similar size, but with a foundation and a small front veranda. I think it is an original Strangetown house, but there's a CAS family (the McIntoshes) already living in it. (I recall that I changed some of the house numbers in Road to Nowhere, because Maxis seemed to have them out of sequence.) If someone can kindly confirm to me that the house illustrated isn't an original Maxis Strangetown one, then I'll know that I have to use the big barrack-style one beside the Grunts.
Personally I could do with as much time as possible, but I am just a play-along, and it's not fair to ask other people to wait for me. It would be nice though if the thread stayed open till I have got both my outstanding entries in.

@AndrewGloria there is a small empty Maxis house in Strangetown, why don't you use that? I am not sure if the one pictured is it or not. I'll load up today (I have this archive of cc I downloaded last night that I need to look at in an empty game anyway) and take a picture.

I think you mean this house, Jo.
It's 105 Road to Nowhere, the one I mentioned in my last post. I can't easily use it because Cameron and Carri Mackintosh (corrected spelling) are living in it with their girls Nicola and Flora, and I don't want to make them move. I think I'm unusual in playing this in my existing Strangetown, and the first thing I did there (a couple of years ago) was add this CAS family as my way of getting to know the Maxis pre-mades. That's why I've adjusted budgets, as my houses are already depreciated. It looks like in my game, the Curious and Beaker families are swapping houses, while everyone else stays put. Which I suppose in a sense is fair enough, since it was Pascal and Loki who upset the aliens.

Silent day, Ripp and Captain were at the Petros bar. Suddenly Captain started to act restlessy.
"Hey, what's wrong, boy?" , Ripp asked.
Then he saw someone walking to the bar..
"Hey there, hehe, are the Smiths having a costume party?" he laught.
"If so where is my invite? I would of made cool Batman!" he winked to the woman who was walking to the bar.
"Smiths?.. no.. eh yes, sort of like that." She smiled and took a seat.
"Hey, nice outfit and all, but I have seen both movies, your costume is the one Michelle Pfeiffer used, and your makeup suits for Halle Berry.
You should really do your research before dressing up" Ripp started.
"And AHAHA, I know what you are going to order, you want a white russian, without vodka, kahlua and ice! Here you go, glass of milk!!!" He continued to be smartass.
"Oh dear... " She sight.
" Okay, about this .. costume party... over at .. Smiths(?)... to where I am going,
I was supposed to meet my date here. He has red hair , glasses and likes to dress a bit like me.
His name is Sample, Sim Sample. Have you seen him?" She smiled.
Ripp started laughing , he could not say anything for a while.
"Okay, hehehe... lady, hehehee.. you have totally wrong movie! it is "Bond, James Bond".. not anyone called Sample!
Both Michelle and Halle did the role of Bond girl but there is no Catwoman in any of the movies!
You should ask for Batman or Bruce Wayne! Have you even seen the movies??" He continued laughing.
"I really have to call Johnny now to give me an invitation, so you can have someone to assist you there!!"
"Okay, enough! I had enough! I do not know any Smiths! And for your information, there is a new nightclub opened at the other side of the crater, it has PVC themed night tonight!
I was supposed to meet my date, Sim Sample in some bar in main road to nowhere! I do not even know is this the right one!
I may not be any superhero or villain from the movies but I am teaching you to have a little respect!" She said and took Ripps face to her hands.
"And by the way.. Michelle never played Bond girl..." she said slowly and let his face go.
She only took one look at Captain, pointed him with her finger and said loudly: "MEOWWW!" , and Captain was looking on the ground.
After she left Ripp closed the bar.
"I am so happy Tank did not see that" was all Ripp could think about on his way home.
"I am so happy master General did not see that" was all Captain could think on his way home.

Lol Ellu, love the cat woman post.
Andrew, I see. It is easier to play a new Strangetown since then you know it has no modifications to it.
Here is the empty house.

@AndrewGloria , easy solution
Go here: http://modthesims.info/download.php?t=615468
in first post in comments grab the non default Strangetown (NE02.rar, base game compatible)
Put that in your neighborhoods folder, go in game and simply pick any lot you want to lot bin (as all are cleaned and empty) , then simply go to your own Strangetown and place the lot there and build (you can delete the NE02 now from your neighborhoods folder )

Thanks Jo; that is the house the Mackintoshes are living in.
And thanks Ellu. I didn't know that Jawusa had uploaded those clean and empty Maxis neighbourhoods. For the contest I think I'll still move the Singles into the big barrack house. I think its size makes it more appropriate for 4 adults than any of the little houses. I'm tempted to keep the house itself quite basic, but with 2 daughters of PT9 living there, we'll see what they can get to grow in the desert garden.
So, while I may not use them for the round 4 house, those clean and empty 'hoods by Jawusa could be very useful. I have a number of lots copied from Pleasantview, Veronaville and Strangetown in my lot bin. I think I'll delete them all and replace them with Jawusa's much cleaner and safer versions. And it will be interesting to see what some of my Sims' homes looked like in their original condition.

The Curious Brother have moved into 1 Tesla Court.
They can hardly believe the size of the place the Council have given them. Only problem is that huge radio mast next door is likely to get in the way of their stargazing, despite them building an extra-tall tower for their telescope.
They've got two children now: Pascal's boy Titus, and Vidcund's baby daughter Andromeda. Both kids seem to have been unceremoniously dumped on the pavement. (No cut-scene video for some reason.)
Now that they're in, I should be able to get my Round 3 play-along post in soon. I was rather stuck for a while trying to work out how to fit them into that huge castle. I had a vague idea what I wanted to do but couldn't think how to divide up the space. And I really wanted to spend my limited Simming time playing -- not building. But both I and they seem to be fairly satisfied with what we've got now. (They're probably fed up to the back teeth waiting for me to finish it!)

Round 3 Judging Scores and Comments
Notes from Judge 2
A hard round to judge — good work from all of you.
The three things I want to point out:
1.Décor and Detail — or the lack of it. Detail does not mean hanging tons of paintings or putting a hundred statues down — it is little things, like does the bedding suit the walls (and the occupant of that room); does the kitchen look as if it fits into the rest of the house (no grand house has a tiny kitchen that belongs in a poor area government house), does the landscaping make sense and is it good on the eye? Is there a wall behind the computer or the television set to plug it in? Some of the interiors are very average, with very little individuality.
2.Build skill, garden and outside: Please look at how you place your windows — there is stunning and there is acceptable. Try to go for the stunning. Please put some groundcover (dirt or ground or pine needles — pine needles very suitable for Strangetown, to keep the roots of the plants cool) — but break up those extremely green lawns. Glad to say the landscaping has improved!
3.Budget: This is a huge lot, with an adequate budget, but some of you have wasted money on things that are not needed — a nursery, a spare bedroom, a lab, to name a few — make sure you spend your budget as wisely as possible. (In the last round with no budget, there will be no excuses for neglecting any part of the lot, inside or outside).
Do not throw points away!
Scores and comments
Yvelotic2001 | Build | Outside | Inside | Playability | Suitability | Total | Comment |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Judge One | 5 | 4.5 | 5 | 5 | 4.5 | 24 | Well done! The outside seemed to not meet quite the same standard as the rest of the house but is close. It really seemed to fit a scientific family well. Only thing that seems a bit lacking is Lazlo’s needs aren’t really met. An area for him to call those phone psychics would have been great- or perhaps a rug to practice bending forks on. That is a hard area to satisfy and overall there is enough scientific support- I only knocked off a half a point. |
Judge Two | 5 | 4.5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 24.5 | Another great entry from you; very modern and high tech. The décor is stunning- especially the kitchen. The outside of the house itself is not as stunning as the inside- but a lovely entry overall. |
Judge Three | 4.5 | 5 | 4.5 | 5 | 5 | 24 | Nice landscaping with good use of terrain paint. I'm not a fan of ladders to access upper areas when there's plenty of room for a safer staircase. I like how you've used the tower for solar power. The interior was modern but then you had aged timber floors which didn't really fit. Lovely interior deco. I loved the modern bathrooms. Lovely colours overall except the brown carpet in the nursery didn't seem to match. |

---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Judge One | 4 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 23 | The outside build part didn’t seem to quite match up with the Curious vibe to me? And the deco part was more of a mish-mash eclectic feel. While that may well fit the M.O. of nerdy bachelors and all the right components seemed to be there- the inside just didn’t mesh that well together. However the outside was well done- loved the gardens part for Vid. | |
Judge Two | 4.5 | 5 | 3.5 | 5 | 5 | 23 | I really like the outside of the house and your garden is looking good. Having to go through the nursery into the bedroom is not a good idea. I think you have done some nice decorating in places; but the white furniture on the white floor does not work. There seems to be a lot of open space and all the white does not help. You did not need to make a lab but it works for the brothers — I just wonder if you could not have spent the money on something else. The bedrooms are attractive but I prefer not to see a double bed against the wall (not everyone uses a mod). | |
Judge Three | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 22.5 | There's a bit of empty space downstairs. I like the corner seating near the kitchen but to me it doesn't really look right with the wall tiles. The green and white tiles throughout the lower floor is a strange choice — it's ok in the kitchen and lab but otherwise reminds me of a hospital. Nice decor in the bedrooms. Outside: I didn't really like that choice of fence with the brown brick exterior. To me it didn't look right. Loungers are not usable at an angle. Cute barbecue corner. I didn't really like the huge square bed of flowers — perhaps more artfully arranged would look nicer. |

Judge One | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 25 | Love the mausoleum! |
Judge Two | 4.5 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 5 | 5 | 22.5 | Some excellent work but you did not pull it through all the way. Still a pretty lot especially the outside- but the inside seems a bit rushed. |
Judge Three | 4 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 5 | 22.5 | Sparse. There's lots of space especially in the lounge and study. You could have done with some rugs perhaps. Furniture is hugging the walls when you could have made use of the empty space in the middle. I like the mausoleum. Nice picture gallery. The floor plan shots were a bit small — you need to zoom in more. The empty bedroom with bed frame was a bit strange (but I guess Olive is strange). Outside could have done with some terrain paint or perhaps some flowers by the graves? |
*Note: Due to some pictures not meeting the guidelines based on judge feedback .5 has been deducted from the total.

Judge One | 5 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 4.5 | 23.5 | While the pool area is fantastic and Jenny and the kids are well represented I feel that PT didn’t quite get his wants met. The bio kind of implies there should be a telescope and there isn’t one. (staring up at the sky) The other issue is that while the Hawaiian furniture is understandable as represented by his shirt it doesn’t seem to blend in as well with the rest of the surroundings. |
Judge Two | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 23 | A good-looking lot but you need to pay attention to small details: the lawn is very green and some dirt/ground around the trees and plants will break that up nicely- the rest is good outside. The kitchen is very pretty but a bit far from the dining room; the décor does not meet the same standard everywhere (the study/ kitchen and living area are very well done but the bedrooms are more average). |
Judge Three | 4 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4 | 21.5 | I love the flowers around the trees. Beautifully manicured lawn- very tidy exterior. The dining table is too far away from the kitchen. I love the balcony and little windows. The secret room was a nice idea. I didn't get a sense of the children's characters however. To me jocks do not equate with heroes. An aspiration for sport is not necessarily an aspiration to be a hero. Jill's room is small with no real character. It didn't even look like a child's room. Perhaps if you'd had the aquarium in her room it would give the room more character. Loungers are not usable at an angle. I thought it was sad that you didn't use the upper level leaving it empty. |

Judge One | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 25 | Love it! Meshes so well. |
Judge Two | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 25 | You nailed it. I am particularly impressed with the outside — but the inside is great too- so full marks from me. |
Judge Three | 5 | 5 | 5 | 4.5 | 5 | 24.5 | Another good entry. It was a bit sparse in places such as the general's bedroom and upper landing (but I understand the chopper etc used up the money). Great interior deco - suitably military-looking with all the camo. |

Judge One | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 24 | Really nice! The only thing is poor little Jill doesn’t get much for her love of dolphins. There doesn’t seem to be much that is sea related other than the octopus water toy. Plus there is no en-suite bathroom for the parents. |
Judge Two | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 5 | 4.5 | 23 | The bedrooms are particularly pretty but other parts of the house seem neglected- like the kitchen and living room. Jill seems a bit neglected as well and why is there a nursery? The 1-tile wide passage between the kitchen and dining room is too narrow; but it is a pretty house! |
Judge Three | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 5 | 3.5 | 22 | The tower looks odd with the different cladding and no windows. I would have liked a front on view rather than angled. The interior deco is a bit sparse in places. I liked the dining room colours but it looked a bit empty. The party room was an interesting addition. Is that a nursery next to the upstairs bathroom? I couldn't tell but it looked pretty sparsely furnished. There was no ensuite for the parents which was a requirement. Again I don't automatically equate sports with heroes but presumably this is what is meant by all the sports references. The car looks to me like a normal sedan not necessarily like a sports car. Where are the sea life references for Jill? Lovely garden at the front. |

Judge One | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 4.5 | 24.5 | Knocked off a half point because of the lack of something for the phone psychics/phrenology. Just half tho as it IS a hard thing to represent Very nicely done on the decorating! |
Judge Two | 4 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 23 | Very different! I like the colours inside it seems to go well with a family named Curious. Too much empty spaces still in the kitchen. The furniture in the living room is all placed against walls which increase the feeling of empty space. The television needs to be against a wall or just a half wall- it needs a place to be plugged in. Good work on the landscaping. windows can be placed better (although I like the windows in the tower). |
Judge Three | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 5 | 23 | Very colourful. I like the windows. Lots of empty space downstairs however. I don't like the arrangement of the lounge with furniture hugging the walls when there is so much space in the centre. (I don't like TVs facing outwards when there is a lot of space.) Lovely exterior and good garden but with a bit of terrain paint needed under plants. |

Judge One | 5 | 4 | 4 | 5 | 4 | 22 | I love how Pascal is shown sitting at his desk where he does his psychoanalysis- his wants are very well done. The house itself is fairly cohesive as far as decorating and has a nice older house vibe. It just doesn't really seem to fit the Curious family in general as there is none of that weird science vibe in it. So while the build is generally ok it doesn't get full points. The other problem area is that while Pascal's needs are extremely well done the others don't really seem addressed at all. I am deducting for the lack for two of them plus a general lack of suitability. Btw the pictures are rather tiny- bigger pictures make it easier for judges to tell details in pictures It isn't my job to deduct points for that but it really does make seeing the details difficult. |
Judge Two | 4.5 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 23.5 | In my opinion this is your best entry yet. Looking good inside and outside. Some groundcover under the plants (ground or dirt) will make it look better still. Inside you set a standard for yourself with the kitchen and dining area. Not all the areas- particularly upstairs live up to it. I would have placed the toddler potty in the bathroom since it is right there. I like that the men have a bathroom each on the top floor. |
Judge Three | 5 | 4 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 21.5 | Nice exterior. I like the opposing tower but thought it a bit odd that the roof is higher than the other. PT would love that lawn! What are the light square patches on the mound? A bit of terrain paint under the plants and more plants would be good as the garden looked a bit bare. Your floor plans were a bit dark. I would have preferred a daylight shot. Interior décor was generally nice but I didn't really like the kitchen with the dark wallpaper and striped rugs on bare wooden floors. I expected more techy or scientific. I'm not getting a sense of the brothers' personalities at all. Is that a low light or a crystal ball over the round kitchen “island”? |
*Note: Due to the pictures not meeting the picture guidelines, being both too small and too far away -1 point is applying to the total.

Judge One | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 25 | Very nicely done! It is quite evident that you put a lot of thought into how to achieve things for this particular family |
Judge Two | 5 | 5 | 4.5 | 5 | 5 | 24.5 | The outside is perfect. The lot is well decorated but for some empty walls. |
Judge Three | 4.5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 24.5 | Your entries are consistently good with beautiful interior decor. My only concern was about the glass roof which could make rooms very warm even with the invisible tiles- but Sims don't care either way! Lovely garden. Spot on for the requirements! |

Judge One | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 25 | Very nice! Love the time you spent getting it right and the story to go with it Nice touch about the photo album. |
Judge Two | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 25 | Not only a good-looking house but amazing attention to detail- from the lawnmower to the clipping coupon desk. Feeling of a happy though not perfect family. I particularly like the interior décor but the outside is great too- so full marks from me. |
Judge Three | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 25 | Interesting and pleasing exterior. Good layout. I like the use of the basement as a TV/gaming room. Lovely bright rooms. Interior decoration is fantastic. I love the kitchen. Great job all round and fantastic job on requirements. I couldn't find fault so you got my first perfect score. |

Judge One | 5 | 5 | 5 | 5 | 4.5 | 24.5 | Overall very well done I just felt that Ripp was a bit too left out. There wasn’t enough focus on making his character stand out. Tank’s works because he behaves like his father and doesn’t know who he is. Dad and Buck are very well done- just Ripp feels weak. Love the story! |
Judge Two | 5 | 4.5 | 3.5 | 4.5 | 5 | 22.5 | A neat house and I like the outside better than the inside- but the war room is a good touch. There is a lot of unused space on the lower floor and the upper floor seems a bit rushed. The exercise machine against the wall in the gym is a problem (it can be used but not repaired); while the gym seems rather empty too. I am not sure if the seating in the TV area suits the military household. |
Judge Three | 4 | 4.5 | 5 | 4.5 | 4 | 22 | I found the exterior rather grim but I guess that's appropriate for a military household. I thought it needed something to break it up though. A bit sparse in places inside. There's a big empty space where the green tiles are — a drill hall? The bathroom looks gigantic. Good décor overall. However I'm not getting a sense of Tank's character- and is Ripp into sport or singing? Outside there is nowhere to sit (for resting from exertion at least). The basement is fantastic. Great job. |

Again I am amazed at how different the same house can be!
There are still some floor plans that are either too small or taken too far away. Floor plan means the building not the garden or land surrounding the building. Also if a veranda has already been seen well on a floor plan or overhead there is no need to take another floor plan showing it, cut that off and get in closer to the building. The judges need to be able to easily see furniture placement and the details in the rooms. Don't forget you may take as many floor plans as you want, even one of every single room if you wish too.
If judges cannot see they cannot give you a fully formed opinion or scores. Pictures not meeting the MTS guidelines will also be incurring pentiles from this round on of .5-1 point off your total score.
Yvelotic2001 very modern and sleek. I really like what you have done outside and that hanging plant deco in the kitchen.
NatteryakToad
Lots of things to keep the brothers happy. 😊 I like the garden and the surrounds around the trees. I think your pictures are a little bit squished. You don’t lose any points for that, but it’s noticeable on the overheads.
Muridae I like your layout and the museum in the yard. Unfortunately, I can barely make out the items in your floor plans, they are taken too far away and you have lost .5 of your total for not meeting the picture guidelines.
Simoleon37 I like the Mediterranean window cutouts and wrought iron pieces. Also nice bathroom tiles, wcif?
Thank you for splitting up your floor plan into two this makes it much easier for the judges to see You do need to show the whole floor plan as well though, this way the judges can tell how the layout all fits together. 😊 The pool area is lovely, although a bit lush for the desert. PT will be happy though.
Kukamuukaanmuka very military, I like how the tower is now a fort watchtower. Love the general’s office. Even the dog has gone military lol, love it.
Modder The front of this one reminds me of a dolls house, what a change! Very pretty.
Quycksylver I like the outside, very different. Not sure that the house says Curious brother’s but Inside is so bright and cheerful, I like it.
Motheringthesims I like the castle look outside and the inside layout and colours but the small picture size makes it very hard to judge and you have lost 1 point off the total for not meeting the picture guidelines.
Randomlyyellstuff beautiful decorating, so light and airy. But I am having trouble seeing details in your floor plans, they were taken too far away. If a house is large think about doing more floor plans of individual rooms or an additional half and half.
Simsample *wonders who took up smoking* I love this, the photo album, the oasis out the back, Jill’s room, a kid would kill for such a cool room.
Aysarth They look ready for battle on the outside. Thank you for the split overhead pictures. Love the secret war room. Also — cat woman. 😊
Play along

Thanks judges! And congrats @simsample
I'm working away on my entry for this round but might end up being a little late. Life is conspiring against me this week with a sick puppy (now recovering, thank goodness!) and a bit of illness for me. I'm hopeful I'll finish on time but thought I'd mention it now just in case!

Yes, congratulations simsample. Your lots have been an inspiration throughout! And (unlike mine) done so quickly.
Now a little taster, till I get all my FRAPS pictures converted to JPEGs and write my post:
The Joys of Life in Strangetown
I have no idea who did this, except that both Pascal and Vidcund regarded Loki Beaker as an enemy. Now that building on the horizon does look a bit familiar. I wonder why. And I wonder who might live there.
