You need to extract the textures from Sims 2, find a similar mesh for Sims 3, then copy the Sims 2 texture onto the Sims 3 texture. Simple!

^ hmmmm not really

It depends on the clothes, if it's a simple skin tight thing than it would be pretty easy (in relative terms) but if you're looking to convert weird or funky clothing from anime or something then you're out of luck (There is a actually a tutorial for converting body meshes but it's really hard and probably not the best first project)

As for textures it's not just a cut and paste type thing, the textures are constructed similarly but layed out differently. It takes some work to get shoulders and stuff to line up right

You'll also sometimes find that the TS2 textures are too small for the TS3 meshes, and they'll need to be either augmented or very carefully stretched. This is really something you just have to try and see.

Yes and no..... This tutorial is too advanced for most people http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=407561, the best way to do it is like what we've all said, there isn't really a tutorial written on it. Try pming Kiara since she's the most experienced in this sort of thing

You also need to consider that Sims 2 textures do not necessarily translate all that well to Sims 3. Recently, someone supplied me with a Sims 2 texture which I put on a Sims 3 mesh. The results were far from ideal.

Converting a Sims 2 mesh to Sims 3 also strikes me as being a collossal pain in the rear end. There are enough meshes out there that you probably can find one that comes pretty close to what you want to do. Or you can make a frankenmesh using Sims 3 pieces. I think you will suffer less brain damage going that route.

Use SimPE to extract the textures from Sims 2 meshes.

For EA/Maxis items:

Click File, Open, then browse to your Sims 2 installation folder if you're converting a base game item, or else to the folder of the expansion pack the item you're converting came from. Within that folder, click on the 'TSData' folder, then 'Res' folder, then 'Sims3D' folder if you're using the base game, otherwise with expansion packs choose the '3D' folder.

Within that folder, choose Sims08.package. When it loads, click on 'Large Image File (LIFO)'. On the right side you'll get a list of all the clothing texture files.

Click on the one you want and then click the Export button to export it. Then right-click on the texture image itself to get a pop-up menu, and choose 'Export Alpha Channel' in order to get your alpha exported too.

For custom content items, just open the item's .package file with SimPE. Click on 'Texture Image (TXTR)' and then choose the texture file on the right side of the screen like you do with the LIFO files for the Maxis stuff.

Sorry I'm really new to all of this and just wondered if anyone has any idea how easy/difficult it would be to convert these legwarmers found on Tish sims: http://tishsims.com/pageSite/sims2/everyday.php?page=6 so that they can be used in Sims 3? I'm really dying to have a set and Tish currently can't convert them as she's having problems with her game. I would like to try and do it myself but like I said I am a complete newbie to all of this and am not sure how much time it would require to learn. Will the above tutorial be able to help me with this do you think? Mainly a question for experienced creators!

The easiest way to do that would be to modify a boots mesh to be more, sort of, fluffy, then use tish's texture as a base for your own texture. Although it's impossible to see properly, it looks like the texture is probably just lots of fur rather than specific details that need to go in the right places on the mesh, so that bit at least would be easy.

Is it easy overall? Well, that depends. If you have some general experience using a graphics editor and meshing, and are confident with pushing buttons without knowing what they're gonna do geronimo-style (and, related to that, are good at remembering to backup old versions of your files...), then yes, it'll be fairly straightforward, though still plenty of work. If you have no idea what the clone tool in a graphics editor is and even less what a vertex is, and haven't developed a healthy sense of reckless abandon, then it'll be more difficult - just because you have a lot more to learn along the way. If the latter is the case, I suggest starting simpler - start out with simple retextures, to get your head around how textures and texture editing work, 'cause you can't mesh without them. Then, once you're confident with that, have a crack at meshing.

You might also be lucky enough to find an existing custom mesh which you could retexture. I know there are a few legwarmer meshes out there, but none that I am aware of are quite that fluffy, so it's a question of whether or not and to what extent you're willing to compromise.
I would not recommend doing a straight conversion of the TS2 mesh, because frankly, it's usually more trouble than it's worth. It's easier to drag vertices around and make faces than it is to muck around with bone assignments, making new morphs, adjusting the TS2 mesh to fit the different proportions of TS3 bodies, etc etc.

I have NO idea now to mesh or anything but I want to convert some of fakepeep's stuff. Isn't there software or some easy tool to convert it?

No, because it's not easy to do. Follow the big CAS tutorial - the one by daluved. That'll teach you all the skills you need to then be able to go and work on fakepeeps' stuff.
