Personally I loathe Blender so completely understood. The other meshing tool often used for Sims is Milkshape 3D- it's old and has limitations when working with TS4 and it's not free ($35/25 Euro after 30-day free trial) but it's much simpler to use. CAS Tools, available as a beta here in the Modding Tools forum, works with Milkshape and gets around a lot of the limitations.

Many of them are very outdated, but still may be useful as an introduction.
Edit: it's been correctly pointed out to me that the list of tutorials linked above is so badly obsolete as to do more harm than good. I'll work on getting the list updated or at least getting the no longer valid stuff removed.
