Hi Nukael,

I was able to make a test animation in Motionbuilder using your rig and then I exported it to 3ds Max and it all looks fine so far (yay! ). I have a couple of quick questions:
- Regarding Step 8 above, do I need a plugin or something to export the animation to an SMD format? Maybe I was looking in the wrong spot, but couldn't see that as an option when exporting file formats. I've never used 3DS before today, so sorry in advance for the noob question.
- With step 10, how would I go about removing the IK chains, can it all be done in s3pe?

Does somebody watched some of their "porn tapes" to know if the animations are some decent step ahead on animating?
That kind of mod is now available at sexysims.com for free.

Why did it have to take so long before animation mods started coming out? Maybe Maxis should include more comprehensive modding tools and tutorials with the next sims game.

Hi Ingridtk

Yes, you need this plugin: http://www.wunderboy.org/3dapps.php#max_smd to export the animation from 3ds max to SMD.

And removing IK chains is done in S3pe, as explained in this post:
http://www.modthesims.info/showthre...518#post3921518

How to actually get the animation into the CLIP format, there's tutorials (a couple actually) over on the tutorial section of this site.

Im not interested unless there is a 'slap Zelda Mae's sunburn' interaction for my sim-self.

Hmm, old thread And the state of the art has changed quite a lot since it was started.

Since it has gone from being a "are there any" to a "how do I" type of thread, moving to Modding Discussion.

Answered at length earlier in this thread :p

We're on Sims 3... three games in, and they haven't shown any interest in supporting mods up to now; I don't think that's likely to change. You can understand what a support nightmare it is, considering how people already manage to mess up their games pretty thoroughly just using the very limited type of CC you can get on the Exchange :p

Even if Maxis DID release modding tools, though, designing high quality 3D animations would not be easy, and there would still be only a handful of modders able to do it... it's just an inherently difficult and time-consuming thing to do, requiring both good computer skills and good artistic taste.

And chances are good that the vast majority of tutorials and modder support would STILL come from the community; that's the case with all the modding communities I've been involved with for games where there were official tools, as well as games like the Sims where there aren't Game developers aren't in the business of teaching players to do their jobs.

Thanks Nukael I really appreciate your help,

*sigh* Unfortunately, the SMD plugin doesn't seem to be working with my 3ds Max demo, I'm just getting error messages. (I am using 2014 and I don't think it's compatible with the 2012 plugin, which seems to be the most recent) I've been fiddling about for a while trying to get it to work (and nearly banging my head against the desk in frustration).

Anyway, I might try searching again for a solution and see how I go. I really hope I can figure this out, because I am absolutely loving the IK rig for animating, and would hate to give up when I am so close to getting the animation into the game

Erm.. sorry to bother you again, but I was able to find a script that exports SMD files.
So I exported the animation from 3DS, but when I try to convert the SMD to CLIP using Animtool I get "Error 2". Did you get this message? Do you know how to fix it?

I don't know, I've never had that error before.
Try using my rigfile, I've attached it to this post.

Make sure you have the SMD and CLIP file in the SAME folder.

Also open the SMD file in Milkshape to make sure it got exported from 3ds Max correctly.

Thanks, I tried the rigfile, but that didn't work either - I still got the same error message. So I opened the SMD in Milkshape, like you said.
It definitely looks like there was some sort of error with the SMD. Strangely, the test animation seems to be playing, but the sim-rig body is flying crazily around the viewing window.
Here's a quick video of what I mean (it is a bit hard to see as the view is zoomed-out):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE-OfR1N_zs

This is how the animation is supposed to look, first in Motionbuilder, then in 3DS Max
(It's just a test btw, the animation itself is slow):

Any ideas where I might be going wrong? I don't know if I am making a mistake transferring from Motionbuilder->Max or Max->SMD or both

Yeah, that's definitely a conversion error. Best thing to try and do is get your hands on a version of 3Ds Max 2012 and use the SMD plugins I linked to. What you can also try is export the FBX from 3Ds Max 2014, import that into Milkshape, and then export an SMD from Milkshape.

Thanks, I wasn't able to find a 2012 copy (not legally anyway), but I messed around with the SMD export settings in 3DS Max 2014, and I have *almost* got it now! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CcSnBu1p-CU
The only issue is, the sim is a little bit tilted for some reason, but I will do some more experiments with it.

Ahh, I'm starting to get really excited I am looking forward to experimenting with walking/stepping animations next. I am still learning to animate, but it's really fun

Thanks again for answering my questions, you've been so helpful!

OK, got infected by the curiosity bug, downloaded all of the tools (Blender, s3py, rigs) and I'm ready to start. Initial plunge has been succesful, and I've been able to make some simple animations, but, here's my question: When creating animations for several actors, how do I superimpose the two or three skeletons?

Spatial relationships are hard to manage when working in three separate windows. Loading props helps, but it's still more of a hit and miss, get help from the absolute x-y-z positions kind of thing. Any help and hint will be highly appreciated.

Do you mean multiple rigs? There's a tutorial here: http://sims3cliptool.wordpress.com/...ultiplerigpose/
