The General is rather pleased with his assault course. It's getting the boys fit, and as a bonus they learned useful life skills like carpentry and digging while constructing it.

It roughly forms a figure of eight. Very little of it is in the shade, because you won't get a chance to wait for a cloudy day when the invasion begins.

The kitchen is kept in pristine condition. It would be 20 sit-ups for whoever's on cooking and washing up duty if it wasn't. There's a breakfast bar, for those occasions when you only have time to grab a snack between homework and the gym.

There's also a proper dining room. The General doesn't mind if breakfast is taken informally, and most days someone will be out at work or school during lunchtime. But he does like to interrogate, er, ask the boys about their day (and any aliens they may have encountered) during a family dinner each night.

The house has a fully equipped gym. The General likes to watch the boys doing laps on the assault course outside while he's doing his daily 20K on the running machine.

And, because it's a house full of men, there's also a fully equipped shower room leading off the gym. Communal showers, probably cold. But that's fully equipped, right?

The General has a digital alarm clock, which automatically synchronises with a time signal. He checks it weekly though. Can't be too careful. His cherished ceremonial sword collection is securely mounted on the wall, but not so securely that he can't pull one of them down to use as a weapon if there's an incursion.

Tank insisted that he have the exact same bedspread as his father, but it doesn't seem to have made any magical difference. He's put up all his school flags and banners and sporting posters, but he guesses that what he really needs to do to get noticed is to run faster laps.

Buck is trying very hard to wear down his father to let him have a pet. He thinks he may have cracked the code when he made the suggestion that it would be good to have a guard dog. It's just a bigger dog, after all. It'll still need bathing and grooming. In the meantime he cherishes his little collection of dog collars and leads, though he hides it behind the door so that his father won't see it.

(Note: the general is well aware that it's there. He inspects the house as a matter of routine while the boys are off at school, after all.)

The late Mrs Grunt once said to someone in Ripp's hearing that her middle son marched to the beat of a different drum. Ripp has taken this as an instruction rather than an observation. He usually waits to play his drum kit until his father hits the gym, so he doesn't get too many complaints about the noise. But of course if he got complaints, he'd still play anyway.

He's managed to lose his alarm clock. He doesn't much care for getting up at 0600 hours to run laps.
