Old 18th Jun 2008, 09:54 PM Can anyone confirm the three install limit? #1

Besides the SecuRom concerns, the most discouraging thing I've heard about this expansion is the install limit. I'd be buying this expansion, not renting it, and I'd like to be able to keep playing it years from now the way I do the old Sims 1 game and expansions.

Can anyone confirm or disprove the news that Apartment Life discs will have limited uses before we have to beg the company to give us a code to make them functional again? I'm not talking about digital downloads, I'm talking about hard copies.

There are too many factors in every day computer use that makes limited installations on a game disk a horrible business move, including the bugs that the expansions commonly get released with and how often customers have to uninstall/reinstall the game. There's also the issue of limited support. In five years will they still offer the necessary support for AL users to reset their installation limit on their discs?

I'm very concerned about this and so far I haven't gotten any answers from official reps. I'm hoping that someone in here has some solid information that I've thus been unable to obtain. I'd really like to get this expansion but I won't if the disc is going to turn into a dud after three or so installs, and even if it's limited to "three computers", computers don't last forever and I already have a desktop and a laptop I play on, so that's two down and I'll be due for a new desktop soon.

I think they were deciding to put the limit on the sims 3 but i think they rethank the idea after complaints. I dont think they will do it for AL

Where have you heard rumors of such a limit? It sounds like the ghost of this thread, which was about Spore and not Sims 2.

Anyway, limits are hard to control with a disc. The could possibly impose limits on downloads from the EA store though. They've done it for other games.

I think its an unrealistic proposal. Even for Sims 3. It shows all the hallmarks of a group of people who are unhealthily obsessive about piracy and who seem to be taking a "You're all going to suffer unless they stop" type of approach.

musiquefille - The idea with the three install limit is that you have to initialize the install by being online when you install. If you aren't online, you can't finish the install. You get three installs before you have to contact EA.

There's no evidence I've seen whatsoever that this scheme will be put in Apartment Life. It was mentioned for Mass Effect and Spore but I don't think we have any evidence whatsoever for it in Apartment Life, so you're probably pretty safe. Just check the box before you buy for any warnings saying "requires internet connection to play" or something like that and you'll know for sure.

Thanks, HystericalParoxysm. That makes me feel a little better, at least.

Grig 32 - True, but as it is illegal, we would never condone that sort of thing here.

Lets hope that it doesn't happen in TS3 then.

Like an example,

Buy the game,

Install 3 times,

Contact EA 8 years later,

EA might not exist meaning its pointless xD

Just saying.

I hate this. I am really hoping for EA to come up with something better because this is not fair. I mean, I would be okay with it if it were 3 different computers but NOT 3 installs. I have reinstalled Sims 2 numerous times and by now would have had to purchase another copy if this 3 install thing existed. I am glad AL won't be like this, at least finish of Sims 2 as the way it is. I hope enough complaints will change EA's mind like the 10-day check in did.

Woah!! I really hope this is not true!! I usually format my HDD once or twice a year (or even more, for "educational" reasons, I study Computer Sciencie and sometimes I really screw up things a lot! lol), I won't buy any EA game if they impose us those restrictions...

frankie, it IS 3 different computers. Note that if you upgrade a certain part of your pc, it may be count as a new computer

Then again, there's no evidence that this version of SecuROM will be included in AL...

I think its stupid. We bought the dang thing, if we want to install it 100 times without telling anyone, we should damn well be able to.

I agree with the OP. If I like a game, I might be wanting to play it until I die. If I die at 86, that will be 7 to 10 computers I have got through, and EA might not even be in business any more to interact with my installation.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did include this version of SecuROM. EA has said it will be on all their games from now on, so why would AL be excluded from that? I read about someone who owns Mass Effect and after changing his video card, they decided that it's a new computer (which is ridiculous) and they won't let him play. I change parts in my computer once a year in the summer and I don't want to lose the right to play a game I spent tons of money on.

If ya'll feel so strongly about it, why not contact EA now, before Apartment Life, or any more games come out and tell 'em so, and confirm what copy protection will be on AL for sure rather than speculating? Contacting EA has been an effective method of changing copy protection in the past - certainly, if enough folks do so again (of course, in a polite and reasonable manner) then we may see a change. It's said in marketing that for every one person that contacts you, there's a thousand people who feel the same way who didn't contact you... so if a significant portion of people make it clear they're sick of these copy protection schemes, they'll change. You just have to make your voice heard - to them.

HP, I honestly didn't think that worked. I actually thought they would "ignore" you. Wow, that is great to hear. I think we should all call EA. Granted, they may still keep using Securom, but at least change some things about it.

I agree. I plan on also calling EA on Monday... Hopefully they realize that if they went through with this plan, it would be foolish.

I got an answer from EA!!! To the relief of many of us, here is the message:

Quote:
Hello Eduardo,

Thanks for contacting EA Technical Support! I understand you're having some
questions regarding The Sims 2 Apartment Life installation. The information
you have read is most likely if you purchase the game online and have the
digital copy. If you intend to purchase the disc version of the game that is
not applicable.

Should you require further assistance about this or any Electronic Arts
games in the future please visit our website and review our extensive Self
Help knowledgebase (http://support.ea.com).

Thanks!

RB G.

frankie - EA is motivated by money more than anything. Convince them that their decisions will lose them money and they will change. It's probably unlikely we'll ever get them to drop their silly copy protections and SecuROM entirely, but as we saw with the Spore/Mass Effect "activate every 10 days or it stops working" scheme, our voices can and do count when we make them heard.

era506 - Good info. Thanks for sharing it with us. Also, your dang avatar made me keep trying to rub a hair off my monitor.
