Does anyone else love the Discworld books by Terry Pratchett? I hope I'm not the only one out there

If there are some fans here, what's your favourite book and why? I personally prefer the Granny Weatherwax books (she could so kick Edward Cullen's hiney!!), and my favourite's Wyrd Sisters.

How bout you's?

My favorite fantasy series by far.

I'm currently running a TS2 hood that is a mix of Discworld and Elizabethan characters.

Yes, I got turned on the the discworld series from downloads at MTS2. So far I've only read the two witches books (Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad) but I love the world and the way that Terry Pratchett writes. I'm sure I'll go on to other books in the series. I'm hoping that he writes more about these groups...I want to see Magrat marry the Prince/King...and I just want to experience more of their world.

Have you read any of the other books in the series? What kind of range of characters are involved? I haven't really looked up all the books on Amazon...I just finished Witches Abroad. I read the Wyrd Sisters as a fluke but I'm surprised how great and enjoyable these two are. I'll be interested to see what else is in the series.

edejan - There are tons of Discworlds I think about 25...and then there's the Tiffany Aching books as well.

I haven't read all of them but there are about five or six that involve Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg & Magrat and others involving Rincewind, who's a cowardly fail-wizard that only knows one spell, but I haven't read them all so I really don't know.

"The Wee Free Men" is frickin HILARIOUS I would definitely read that if you haven't yet.

We've just bought this fan-made movie of Lords & Ladies, it looks pretty cool.

Without giving spoilers, I'll just say that there are quite a few more than two books dealing with the witches and Lancre. Check out this list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discworld#Bibliography

Look for books in that table that say "The Witches".

I love these books! Thank God I'm not alone ^_^
I also love "Nation", a non-Discworld novel he wrote. It's so sad, I think he's only writing one more Discworld novel before he stops because he has Alzheimers (spelling?)
But those books were awesome. I love the one with Granny Weatherwax and Death is my absolute favourite. The Hogfather was epic and I loved the TV version of it! Teatime rocks xP

I've now read Guards Guards, Men At Arms, Feet of Clay and the Fifth Elephant and am starting on Jingo, and I have to say I LOVELOVELOVE Carrot & Angua. They are so sweet together, and Carrot's just win.

Unfortunately there isn't much of a fanbase.

I think that's cos they're more mature books or whatever. Everyone right now wants to read Twilight and Harry Potter but I've always loved to read books outside my age group, they have better plots and I'm waiting for a book where the ending is a big shock :P
Well, HP did that, in book 6, but these books are so funny and the ending is hard to figure out. Maybe that's why people don't read them xD

Agreed. These books don't have a mindless cult following, but they do have fans that can spell, and like the characters for more than their hotness (well, in the case of Carrot...but I digress!)
I can't believe Terry P.'s got Alzheimers. Seems sad that someone so creative and intelligent gets it. I heard somewhere there's gonna be one more Tiffany Aching book and then that's it, but who knos.

I have heard of him but I haven't been able to get my hands on any of his books yet. I'm hoping to this year.

Oops, I keep forgetting this thread exists. I'll grab some screenshots the next time I play.

Regarding the rumor about Terry only doing one more book, a Tiffany Aching book, not sure where that rumor came from, but my sister had heard the same thing. There are at least 2 books on the table right now, one will be released in a few months and is an Unseen University book:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unseen_Academicals

After that is indeed supposed to come another Tiffany Aching.

I saw a documentary about his illness--he says he can still plot books just fine; his alzheimer's is an unusual kind that affects visual/spacial functions first, so the main challenge he was having (as of that docu, anyway) was the *typing*, not the writing. So someone is transcribing for him.

My Discworld/Tudor 'hood is progressing well. Some things I set up per the books, some things are just happening. Some pairings:

Sam and Sybil Vimes (planned)-- offspring so far: Young Samantha
Carrot and Angua (planned)
Salacia and Otto Chriek (just happened, kind of awesome) -- Salacia is preggers
Wolf von Uberwald and...Reggie Shoe? WTF? (just happened obviously)
William de Worde and Sacharissa -- pregnant with first child
Perdita and Jason Ogg (just happened) -- live with Nanny Ogg, one daughter, ARGH forgot name again
Moist and Adora Belle (planned) -- no kids yet
Magrat and Verence (planned) -- Ernest of Lancre, Esmerelda, and another son (heir and a spare!)
Eskarina Smith and Ponder Stibbons are living at the Unseen University with other wizards, and are dating (planned)

Ernest is one of the first kids born and is a teen now--bizarrely, he is dating Mary Tudor (daughter of Henry VIII). I guess it makes sense since they're both royalty. I haven't had too much other intermixing yet between the two 'worlds'.

I too love the disc-world books. Granny Weatherwax and friends was my favorite set of characters, however after reading Going Postal (or something along that line), I've become quite a fan of the books that strongly feature the dictator. (Can't recall his name at the moment -- it has been some time ago that I read any of this series.)

Men at Arms was quite cute and enjoyable too. I think it was the last book I read by him.

Oh yes, I love these.

Lord Vetinari, Granny Weatherwax, Vimes and Death are among my favorite characters. But for a fantasy/literature freak there is so much to love about his books.

I think the nightwatch books are my favorite series. The whiches a good second best.

Gwynne - your hood sounds hilarious. I think I might attempt the same thing, it'd mean a bit of cc scrounging around, but it'd be awesome fun.

It'd be interesting to see what ACR had in mind for DW...

Lordy, you just reminded me that ACR originally had Angua develop a huge crush on Nobby Nobbs before I realized what was happening. I had to nip that in the bud despite the fact that it was hilarious.

(When on earth did I become a person who uses the word Lordy? Lawks!)

Edit: I found the 'Sims 2 wiki' medieval Content List to be very helpful in decorating this hood, as well as All About Style. There is a 'clean' medieval 'hood over at MATY, I think the creator was 'MadameMim', she was obviously a DW fan (you can see from some of the townie names). She also provided a list of recommend CC content.

Some caveats:

The main problems I ran into were electronics, but I now have reasonable replacements for phones, televisions, and computers. Most are available at MTS.

Be wary of the really BIG medieval clothing packs--they're nice in that they include stuff for all ages/genders, but I found that many of them contained a) endless recolors of the same thing, b) incredibly ugly or low-rez stuff, c) badly binned stuff. It took me hours and hours to clean some of them up after I had downloaded them all a bit too willy-nilly.

Cool, thanks I'm trying to download the minimum amount needed for credibility, coz my pc's already slow enough *gah*

May I ask though what you used for the Watch uniforms? I can't find anything along th elines of what I'm thinking of, which is leather britches and breastplate with short-sleeved shirt underneath...and as for female armour, well, that's hopeless.

I've got some uniforms like that (breastplatess), including one I found for Angua. I'm not sure where they all came from, I'll need to try to look at the filenames when I get home, or I could at least get you a screenshot to do a WCIF with.

For now, look on the Medieval section of All About Style to see some male breastplate uniforms:

Thanks for all your help I download mostly from mts2 so I have no idea about other good sites out there.

I've spent ages downloading some stuff, my hood isn't going to be too strictly medieval. Mainly because I'm mixing it in with Harry Potter sims and maybe some of my own. So it'll be a mixed bag.

I have to admit I cheated and downloaded a few great versions of Carrot, Angua, Vimes & Susan I found. But I'm making everyone else. Really XD

*lols* I was wondering if I was the only person thinking of or even attempting a Discworld 'hood XD And gwynne -- your 'hood sounds awesome!!

I'm personally a great fan of the wizards. If I had the University expansion pack, making Unseen Uni would be the first thing I'd do... XD
