|2nd Aug 2008, 07:59 PM||Chapter 16: A Startling Secret #101|
Kelli and I had decided to move off campus for our junior year. We rented a townhouse a few blocks away. Isn’t it cute?
I loved having my own room again. My classes were harder, but I’d always heard the junior year was the toughest. I really had to work to stay on top of my studies.
Damion had transferred to Le Tour to be with Kelli. He even lived in the same apartment complex as we did, so he was over a lot.
There were no hard feelings between us. I had been honest with Sean, and since Damion was with Kelli, he wasn’t exactly in a position to side against her best friend.
It was also great to see Emilio again. We’d spent all summer talking on the phone, which actually turned out to really strengthen our feelings for each other. Now that we could talk face to face, it was hard to just talk… if you know what I mean.
One night I was sitting down for dinner when Sophia called.
“Kat, I have some minor bad news about the wedding,” she said.
“What? Is everything ok with you and Pete?”
“Oh, yeah. It’s nothing like that. The wedding is still on track… It’s just that… Well, you know how close Pete was to Sean in high school, and they still hang out in college…”
“Yeah, what are you getting at Sofie?” I urged.
“Well, Pete’s asked Sean to be his Best Man. Hun, you know I tried to talk him out of it because I don’t want to make things awkward for you. But if anyone tried to talk me out of having you as my Maid of Honor, I wouldn’t stand for that. If you hate it I can try to convince him to demote Sean to just a groomsman. That way you won’t have to walk with him,” my sister explained.
“Sof, don’t worry about it. I really don’t mind, your wedding day is more important than me feeling awkward for a little while. It’s only one day, I guess it won’t kill me. I just hope we can both be mature about it,” I said.
“You’re the best, you know that? I love you sis! You still up for cake tasting next weekend?”
“Absolutely! I’d be crazy to miss out on free cake! See you then. Bye.”
So, I had to see Sean one last time… Luckily, it wasn’t for several months. Maybe time would heal Sean’s heartache and we’d be able to face each other civilly.
That year I spent winter break with Emilio. His mom greeted me warmly when we arrived at his house.
“Katarina! It’s so good to see you again. I always knew you’d end up with my Emilio. I couldn’t be happier!” she exclaimed, embracing me.
I was treated like part of the family during my visit, and found myself having a great time. Mr. and Mrs. De Luca were amazing. They’d gotten married very young and moved to the US so Mr. De Luca could expand his business. He was a very skilled carpenter and owned several furniture stores in Italy and New York. He was an excellent business man. As a teenager in Italy Mrs. De Luca had been a famous ballet dancer, but now chose to be a stay at home mom since her husband was making more than enough to support their family of four. Despite their wealth, they wanted to live a modest life in the country. They valued family and friends more than wealth and fame.
As wonderful as the De Luca’s seemed, you can understand my surprise to learn about their sordid past.
I was staying in Emilio’s 11 year old sister’s room for the duration of my visit.
“Is this room fine? It’s all we have, short of an air mattress in the basement. We thought you’d be more comfortable in a real bed,” he asked, as I lay on the bed.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine here,” I said.
“You sure you don’t mind Lizzie’s My Little Pony collection staring at you?”
“Not at all. You forget – I used to be a little girl too. It’s really no big deal,” I assured him. “But where is Lizzie? Shouldn’t she be here for Christmas?”
“Nah, Liz always spends the holidays with her dad.”
“Her dad? But isn’t he downstairs?” I asked, confused.
“Oh, I guess I haven’t told you before, but it never came up… my mom had an affair. Lizzie’s only my half sister,” he explained.
“What? That’s horrible!” I reacted.
“Well, at first it was. My dad was really hurt at first and wanted to divorce her, but she was truly sorry and mad at herself. My dad couldn’t bring himself to leave his pregnant wife all alone in her time of need. He did what only a real man could do and supported his family. He’s raised Lizzie as his own daughter. Anyway, it’s all in the past.”
Emilio kissed me goodnight and went to his room. I fell asleep wondering how someone could forgive their cheating spouse so easily.
The next day Emilio and I were hanging out in his room after breakfast. He was showing me his old high school trophies and action figure collection when I spotted a photo album lying on a desk.
Curiously I picked up the thin album and looked through it.
There were various Polaroids and snapshots of a young Emilio. I had a hard time recognizing him in some because he’d had much longer hair in high school. There were several pictures from a birthday, a few by the De Luca’s pool, and some of a group of teens at Fourth of July party near the lake. What caught my attention was a photo of a young Emilio with one of his ‘friends.’
It looked like they were a little more than just friendly. On the next page was another photo of the two boys – this one more obvious than the first.
It looked like the camera person had interrupted Emilio and Trevor kissing. Surely not… not my Emilio. I tried to keep my cool and searched for more pictures of this Trevor boy, but there weren’t any more.
The last section of the photo album had a handwritten header that read ‘College.’ It started with pictures of Emilio’s dorm room, and ended with two pictures of Emilio and a very pretty raven-haired girl.
Was that an engagement ring on her finger? I was getting dizzy. I really didn’t know Emilio like I thought I did. I needed some explanations.
“Who are Trevor and Lena?” I asked, trying hard to keep the edge out of my voice.
“Just some old friends,” Emilio shrugged it off.
“They don’t look like just ‘friends!’ Were you with a guy?!... And engaged?!” I yelled, giving away my growing jealousy.
Emilio sighed, knowing he couldn’t avoid this conversation. “Trevor and I had a brief flirtation in high school. We started out as just friends. I didn’t know he was gay until he started hitting on me. I was curious. But I didn’t want to be exclusive with him; I was more interested in girls, so we broke up. It was nothing serious.
“And Lena was my first serious college girlfriend. I proposed after a few short months, but that relationship ended badly. I caught her in bed with two frat guys on spring break, just a few days after those pictures were taken.”
“You would keep that from me? Don’t you think I’d want to know that my boyfriend has been engaged before AND made out with guy?” I asked, furious at the deceit.
“No. It’s in the past,” he said. “I’m obviously not gay, or with Lena anymore. I made my decisions and learned from them and now I’m with you. I didn’t think it would matter. There are just some relationships that belong in the past. I don’t need to know everything about the people you’ve dated. It doesn’t matter to me because I’m the one with you now.”
“I don’t need to know every detail, I just need you to trust me and be honest,” I said, wringing my hands.
Emilio caressed my cheek tenderly. “I’m sorry, I should have told you. But that’s not who I am any more. We have plenty of time to find out everything about each other. We’re going to take things slow and do it right. I don’t want to make any mistakes with you.”
Placing a finger under my chin he lifted my face to his. “Don’t you know I’m in love with you?” He whispered softly.
“Oh Emilio, I love you too!” I said excitedly. It was the first time we’d said those three words to each other. He tipped my head back and kissed me deeply, washing away my fears.
On Christmas Eve, Mrs. De Luca served her traditional meal of prime rib, with Italian crepes for dessert.
On Christmas morning I awoke to find my grandparents had been invited over. Everyone exchanged presents, Emilio’s family had even gotten me a few small ones. There weren’t a lot of gifts, since we were all adults, and Lizzie was gone. We drank eggnog, sang carols, and watched old Christmas movies all day.
I’d had a wonderful time with the De Lucas, but now my stay had come to an end. I went home to spend New Years with Momma and Sophia before school started back.

Sorry for the delay! I hope the update shows more about Emilio.
I'm moving next week, and will be in between apartments for a month. I will try to sneak in updates when possible but I don't know if I'll have my computer set up or if I'll have internet to post. In the mean time, keep commenting!

I cant wait for an update. I wasnt suprised to find out that she chose Emilio. Although Im more of a Sean fan, I love the reality of the situation - long distance deffinitely does that to a relationship -- I love how real you're making her situation. Keep up the good work =D

Thanks everybody! Yes, Emilio has some skeletons. He is very different than Sean. While most of the time he seems like another big sweetheart to Kat, its a different kind of sweet. He's got charisma and charm that are more sexual than Sean could have ever been and that appeals to Kat right now. The question is... how will Emilio's skeletons effect his relationship with Kat, if at all?

YAY MORE problems I love how this is going, the characters are so real (maybe cause it's based on a true story lol, but I guess some of the things come from your imagination).
No one can be perfect huh? I just hope this doesn't bother Kat too much, it would be a shame seing her breaking up with Emilio
I'll be waiting to see how this goes !

In real life, I knew the son of 'Kat'(not her real name obviously). 'Kat' herself told me this story, but not all the little details about the private life of 'Emilio'. I had to make up his secrets, but they are based on characteristics of the people I know. If that makes any sense? Oh well, everyone has a past! We'll see how Kat deals with it all in the next chapter.

I knew it, that guy is sick in the head, MAN! Finally, Sean's coming back. Please make him shave and much more handsome, oh please do! X EMILIO. LUV SEAN.
SEAN AND KAT ALL the way!
That's nice how you and your friends can share stories together..
|5th Aug 2008, 03:09 AM||Chapter 17: With This Ring #110|
I was finally done with Junior year and ready for summer!
To start things off, Emilio graduated. He scored major honors and a couple of great job offers.
Pete and Sophia also graduated from Sim State and were dying to start their new life together.
Luckily, they wouldn’t have to wait long. Just a few days later, we were all back in Danview Valley for the rehearsal lunch.
It was the first time I’d seen Sean in over a year. He was looking… more rugged than usual. I’d heard he’d started drinking a lot. I hoped he wasn’t ruining his life, but I tried not to be concerned for him.
The blonde haired, blue eyed vixen sitting next to him is Cassie, Sophia’s closest college friend and the third bridesmaid.
I tried to take my mind off Sean and glued myself to Emilio, who Sophia had asked to be an usher at the wedding.
Sean flirted with Cassie the whole time, not that I cared. It was just so obvious that he was trying to one-up me and show that he had moved on too. Whatever, he could play games if that’s how he wanted it to be.
After the meal, and exchanging of bridal party gifts everyone stood around talking. Sophia was telling Emilio how nice it would be to have him in the family one day, Damion was giving Pete wedding night advice, and Kelli was talking to me about… well, I wasn’t really listening.
“Where’d Sean run off to?” I asked curiously, before I could stop myself.
“I haven’t seen him since dessert,” she said, giving me a look that said ‘you’d better not let Emilio overhear you asking about Sean.’ “He’s hotter than I remember him being in high school, don’t you think?” she smiled devilishly.
“Not really. He looks like a bum with that dirty beard,” I said bitterly.
“Ohhh, but that’s just my style!” she said, making me giggle.
Sophia and Pete said their goodbyes to the wedding party and made their way home for the night.
“Ready to get out of here?” Emilio asked, finding me.
“Sure, just give me a minute; I have to grab my purse.”
The coat closet where Kelli and I had left our purses was pitch black. I could hear a rustling noise as I fumbled around for the light switch. The blinding light flicked on and I came face to face with the last thing I wanted to see: Sean and Cassie hooking up in the closet.
I muttered a lame apology for busting in on them and high tailed it out of there, telling Kelli to give me my purse at the wedding tomorrow.
It was here! The big day had finally come! I loved our dresses and the jewelry Sophia had given us as bridesmaid gifts. Everyone was in place and waiting for the beautiful bride herself.
The wedding march began and Sophia made her grand entrance, walking down the aisle toward her waiting husband to be. Pete’s face lit up as soon as he saw her, and I saw him wipe away a tear.
They said their vows, and exchanged rings as the guests stood and clapped for the new couple.
Inside, the reception kicked off with the couple’s first dance. Pete and Sophia glided around the dance floor, oblivious to everyone else present.
After some dancing it was time to cut the cake.
Time flew by, and before we knew it, Sophia and Pete had to leave for their honeymoon, but not before the bouquet toss. The bridesmaids and a few other single ladies gathered on the back porch hoping to be the lucky girl to catch the fateful flowers. Cassie had her game face on; she really wanted to catch that thing!
Ironically, it was Kelli who caught it, even though she wasn’t trying at all. It practically landed right in her hand. Sofie congratulated the ‘next to be married’ before leaving with her new husband.
As it turned out, the bouquet toss was an accurate predictor! At the end of the summer, Damion popped the question and Kelli said yes.
With my sister married, and my best friend engaged, the wedding bug finally bit me and I found myself dreaming of the thing that had been my worst fear only two years ago.

Wow! You're fast sweetbabyhnd! You got in between the two updates. lol.
Dristina, I don't know if I'd call Emilio sick, he just has a past that isn't normal for everyone. But, it's a realistic situation that many people go through and is an important tidbit to remember later in this story. Thanks for rooting for Sean! He's my favorite, and the unkempt version of him is cuter (I think). I got really tired of him for a while, but now Emilio is getting on my nerves too. Lol, I'm too involved in this story!

....There is absolutley no way that this is your first story.
If your first one is this good, I can't imagine how amazing your future stories will become..if you write them that is.
Anyways, I♥love♥this story. It's soo good. Thanks for writing it. I can't wait for the next update.

Lol, Treena I was joking about him being 'Sick'. Well, I wasn't very happy with the way Sean showed up, un shaved and looking quite awful. I hoped he would do better.

I figured Sean needed to go through some issues after the breakup with Kat, so he let himself go. He's kind of a bum/bad boy now I guess. He's still cute under all that scruff though.

|7th Aug 2008, 09:31 PM||Chapter 18: Changes #122|
This chapter has some sexual references that might be uncomfortable for some readers, but it's basically PG.
I hope it both condemns and redeems Emilio in your eyes. :]
Okay, so maybe I wasn’t exactly honest when I said I was okay with Emilio’s past. One thing I had come to find out was that he’d had several sexual partners, whereas I’d had none. Sean had been my only other boyfriend, and we’d been waiting for marriage.
Emilio insisted that he’d turned over a new leaf, and he had never tried to make that kind of move on me. But as much as he tried to respect me, it only made me feel like he wasn’t interested in me that way. I wanted him to see me as sexy, as the type of girl he desired.
So, I went through this period of feeling unsexy. To make up for it, I dressed sexy, did my makeup heavier, whatever I thought would make guys look at me in that way; especially Emilio. Every time we went out I’d wear a short skirt, or low cut top. The poor boy was drooling over me, but that’s what I wanted, right?
This had been going on for most of the semester, and Kelli was getting worried about me.
“What’s up with your new look?” she asked me one day, as I was getting ready for another date with Emilio.
“What do you mean? I look good,” I replied.
“You know what I mean Kat. You’re dressing too sexy, that skirt is like… a headband. That’s not like you.”
“How do you know what I’m like?!” I snapped. “I’m not a helpless little girl anymore and it’s time for me to stop acting like one.”
“Kat, you know what I mean. You’ve changed. I’m just worried that you aren’t really happy.”
“Happy? I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I have a man who loves me and thinks I’m sexy,” I insisted.
“You’re sexier without all the makeup and glitzy clothes, can’t you see that? Now you just look… skanky,” she tried to reason with me.
“Whatever Kelli! You’re just jealous!” I shouted, as my phone beeped. Emilio was here to pick me up.
“If you ever need to talk I’m…”
I walked out of the room before she could finish and met Emilio downstairs.
“Hey baby, you look amazing tonight,” he said, pulling me into his arms for a kiss.
Now that he had graduated and was working full time, Emilio liked to take me dancing on his nights off. He said it helped him relieve stress from working all day. I liked to dance, so it was no problem.
As sexy as my new outward appearance was, I still didn’t have the inner confidence to be a true vixen. It wasn’t as easy as putting on a different outfit. The only way I knew how to make up for it was by drinking. One night in particular we were at a bar and I was drinking my typical cocktail.
I was already a few gone when I felt the alcohol hit me. I glanced over at Emilio and thought he was looking especially hot tonight.
He pulled out on the dance floor and started swaying to the music. It must have been a mixture of alcohol and music, but I wanted him real bad and was showing him through my dance moves.
I don’t remember anything else at the club, or the ride home, I just remember suddenly finding myself in Emilio’s room, making out on his bed. There was music playing, and dim light, but that’s all I could say about that night. I couldn’t focus on anything other than the burning desire I was feeling.
I could feel his rough hands on my skin and realized my clothes were gone, so were most of his. I knew what was about to happen, and I didn’t care. We’d never gone past second base before, but I was too buzzed to be self conscious about him seeing me naked.
But Emilio suddenly drew himself back.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, starting to feel my self-consciousness creep up on me.
“Kat, I want you so bad… but, I don’t want to take advantage of you,” he said.
“You’re not, I want to be with you.”
“But…” he started to protest, but I pulled him under the blankets with me.
That’s the last thing I remember before blacking out.
The next morning, I awoke in Emilio’s bed, wondering how I got there. Images of the night before flashed through my mind. I looked down and saw my discarded clothes on the floor.
‘Oh no, did we… have sex?’ I thought frantically as I grabbed my things and got dressed.
Emilio was still asleep and I didn’t want to face him in my distress. If we had done it, I didn’t want him to think I regretted it. I searched the room for any clue. Emilio was still wearing his boxers and t-shirt, but that didn’t tell me anything. I needed a sign of whether or not we’d slept together. I thought to check the sheets, but I didn’t know what I was looking for. Blood I guess, weren’t girls supposed to bleed their first time? I took a peek under the covers, but there were no stains.
I didn’t know what else to look for, so I just grabbed my purse and left his apartment.
At home, I realized I was starving, so I grabbed a bowl of cereal. I didn’t think Kelli was home, so I didn’t bother changing clothes first.
Unfortunately for me, Kelli was home and heard me rustling around in the kitchen. She joined me with a bowl of cereal.
“Didn’t you come home last night?” she asked, looking me over.
“Of course I did,” I insisted.
“Then why are you wearing the same clothes you left in yesterday?”
She was too perceptive. I rolled my eyes and told her I’d stayed at Emilio’s place.
“Oh my gosh! Did you guys finally have sex?”
“How is that any of your business?” I snapped at her.
“Kat, why can’t you tell me things anymore?” she asked. “We’re best friends. I just thought you might want to talk about it. Did something bad happen last night?”
“I don’t know!” I slammed my spoon down, frustrated. I felt like I couldn’t breathe, so I walked out onto the porch to get some air.
I stood there staring into the distance, unaware that Kelli had joined me until I felt her hand on my shoulder.
“I don’t know what happened last night,” I said. “I drank too much and blacked out. I think we had sex, but I couldn’t tell. I left without waking him this morning.”
“Oh honey, it’s okay. Everyone has a drunken night or two in college. You love Emilio, and you can ask him what happened next time you see him.”
“But, I’m not ready for our relationship to become dependent on sex! I was supposed to wait until I got married. That’s what I’ve been telling myself for the past 5 years, and I could have ruined it all in one night, just because I was playing with fire! I’m so stupid!”
“You’re not stupid! You’re human!” Kelli comforted me, telling me sex wouldn’t rule us if we really loved each other. We had a good laugh over the story of me checking the sheets for stains, and I promised to start acting like the old me again.
To take my mind off everything, I threw myself into my new internship. It was a couple of weeks before I saw Emilio again, because our schedules were clashing a lot now.
We were having a pajama movie night at my place and were cuddled up on my bed. Pretty soon we weren’t watching the movie anymore, and started making out instead. I felt so uncomfortable! Did he want to have sex? If we’d done it before, he probably wanted to do it again. He wasn’t trying to undress me or anything, but I still needed to know what happened that night and he was the only other person that could tell me.
I pulled myself away from him.
“Emilio, did we have sex the other night?” I asked blatantly.
He looked uncomfortable. “I was meaning to ask you the same thing. I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know? I drank too much and passed out. You have to know, I need to know what happened!” I said, panicking.
“Well, the last thing I remember from that night was you pulling on my shorts… But I don’t remember anything else. I thought you would.”
“So, neither of us knows what happened?” I started to cry, not knowing if I’d missed the most important night of life.
“Kat, we love each other. It doesn’t matter if we did or didn’t. There’s no way to tell now. Let’s just say we didn’t, and we can wait again until we’re really ready and not drunk.”
“Really? Cause I don’t think I’m ready.”
“That’s fine,” he said, kissing my hand sweetly. “I can wait until you are. I have the rest of my life to be with you, there’s no rush.”
The rest of his life? I got butterflies in my stomach when he said that, it was so sweet. I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him too. He was both exciting and sweet; it doesn’t get better than that.
Up Next: Kat's graduation brings about a big question.
