this is my first attempt creating an object and of course I'm having a lot of issues. this is one thing i can not accomplish. I'm cloning an object. after everything is done in SimPE i must export it and load it in milkshape.
1.which file format is readable by milkshape? (.smd .map .x .xsi .txt .obj .3ds are my options)

in any case milkshape doesn't recognize it. it doesn't load the object just opens the 3d program.
so i open milkshape and file-open-tutorial object and it's empty.
it shows only the .ms3d files of course (it's own samples).
how can i change the file format when i export it from simPe?

is this something i must do or am i completely wrong from the beginning?

MS can import .3ds, .obj and .txt, possibly .smd too but I've never tried that one. And you won't be opening the mesh files, but rather importing them into MS. It doesn't sound like you are following a tutorial at all, try this it should explain a few things. http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=104795
