I've noticed lately that some .package files dont seem to be recognized correctly on my mac, while working fine on the family pc.
when looking at the "kind" of file in the finder, a normal .package is a 'Unix Executable File" however the 'broken' .package files are seen as a standard document. I've tested changing the .package extension to something else, and then back hoping it would re-recognize the file, but no luck.
Like i mentioned before, its not EVERY package file, and the problem files ARE working on the PC version perfectly fine.

any ideas?

Does the game recognize these files? If it is loaded by the game and is recognized, it does not matter whether Mac recognizes it in Finder, I would think.

It's my mod, at least one of the issues is my mod. Bundles let me know they were busy with their education and may be missing for a bit, off and on, by the way. I've been trying to help them but am not sure how because I own a pc, not a mac. My Skills (and some other mods) are not working out for this person. Do you have any ideas Ellacharm3d? Something I could try myself to ensure it may work on a mac? There was a post in my mod thread (Skills) by Bundles about this issue. It's been bugging me ever since. I just don't know what to do. I was at first thinking it was an issue of file association, but I can't be sure. I've never even used a mac. I don't think I've ever even seen one, lol.

Here's the mod that's mine, one that isn't working for Bundles: http://modthesims.info/d/470993

i've been able to run this on the PC with no problem, but the mac doesn't recognize the mod. most of the mods are seen as "unix executables", but this shows up as just a doc. Tried switching around the file type hoping the mac would begin to recognize it, but no luck...

But you're saying it shows up as a doc. Is it the mod or the zip file your mac doesn't recognize? I'm wondering if you could try redownloading it? Maybe it didn't download correctly? Worth a try?! I wish I could help more, I have no clue about macs. Do all the packages end up like a doc or just this one? If just this one, maybe it's the download problem. If all of them, maybe it's a association issue? (I once opened a file and it asked me what program I wanted to use to open it and I said notepad but "always open this type of file with notepad" was checked (by default) and I changed my association once doing that. It was years ago so I don't recall the details.)

That was my stab in the dark, otherwise I'm not really sure. I searched and didn't see anything on file types changing. Once you unzip the file, the file itself should be a package. That's strange that it's a document and isn't recognized. Sounds like either download issue or game association issue with the file type, but I really don't know much about macs. Sorry.... There are forums here you could ask in if you want, or I can ask for you if you'd prefer.

More tries:
Has some info on mac installation: http://www.freegamehack.com/tutoria...iles-beginners/
When files just aren't working: http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title...les/Not_Working

EDIT: I wonder if when you download if it's saving it as a doc or if the unzipping program is renaming it? Good luck to ya! ^.^ Wish I had more information for you.

Also from Bundles: I've posted in the OSX forum, hoping for some help. It's not all .package files, ive installed three others today that have been fine, but there has been others that have done the same thing. ill be sure to post if i find a fix, there's always a reason, and a way to fix it :-)

Mac files have two parts, a "Data" fork and a "Resource" fork. The Resource fork holds information like what kind of file it is, what program created the file, what it's icon looks like, the time the file was created, modified, etc.

Emaculation site had a post about losing this same type of information during a file transfer,

How did you copy the files from your old Mac to your MacBook Pro? If you used for instance a USB flash thumb that was still iFAT formatted and not (re)formatted HFS+, the files will have lost their specific Mac-properties (like resource forks) and will have become unusable.

Otherwise I'm clueless as to what I should be looking for. At least I gave it a shot, aye? I'm curious as to what is going on & why your mac doesn't like my mod, Shame on your mac!

Sorry it's so excessive but I was trying to save you some time and trouble.. I hope that helps.

Sorry, this fell by the wayside. Just to let you know I have been looking at this.

Then, while trying to figure things out, needed other stuff to test this and then got distracted by that. I ended up creating the cheaper Lifetime Rewards and Hidden Traits/Skills portion to help with this and that took a life of its own when I needed to update the Skill & Traits & LTR wiki FAQ so I have some form of documentation. And all that took some time studying it all, as I never messed with the Skill+Traits+LTR tunings. And well, from all that rambling, I guess you can tell how one thing leads to another and ... *hits the Reply button before I wrote an essay.

So...is there still an issue with different icons determining if the .package CC works or not?

Hmm. I wonder if this is the same issue I'm having? I'll test tomorrow evening and let you guys know what's happening.

I just tested this out on my laptop. It definitely does not matter if the files are executable or not, which is what determines the difference in the icon.

There was no intro both with an unchanged (black icon) nointro.package and one I ran "chmod -x " on to remove the execute bit (white icon).

This looks to just be a red herring.

Yes, Mordant17, that's basically what I said in post#2. Thanks for confirming.

My testing in the last week in creating my own mod versions is to see what causes the permissions and icon to be different in the first place. Is it S3PE or a step in the importing, saving or something else. Archiving tools, archive file formats...?

But for sure, just like in Windows, the appearance of the icons do not matter. The filename's extension does.

Well, with a little googling, I came across an interesting thread. Reading that thread and the one linked to from there seem to indicate that zip files don't save permissions when transferring from one OS to another -- so they automatically have as permissive permissions as possible (say that five times fast!).

lol ellacharm3d! You sounded like me!~ ^.^ Thanks for taking care of the wiki.

I don't know where Bundles is right now, possibly distracted as well, by school or something, but since this isn't an isolated issue, I'm glad it's still being discussed and looked into.

Mordant17, lol I can't even say that fast once! But the topic you mentioned of zip files don't save permissions, do you think that's similar to my above post about the file losing part of it's information when being transferred? (3rd post from top)? Since I don't have a mac, I am clueless on this one, aside from what I"ve read (which I'm not certain I totally get it).
