Default In CAW-edited world, terrain turns black. Help!
Hey there. I'm new to CAW, and of course I'm having a problem that no amount of searching on Sims forums has helped me find the answer to.

I downloaded and learned to use CAW in order to put down empty lots in Bakafox's lovely world Avalon. The process went fine until I exported the world and loaded it into my game. Then the terrain and roads became black in Map View and Edit Town.

Here's a shot of the travesty. Keep in mind that this pic shows quite a bit of CC, but I have since started with a fresh The Sims 3 document folder and have no CC or downloaded EA content. The lots were put down in the game, not in EIG, while I was hoping that this was some kind of rendering problem that would resolve itself as I played. It didn't.

This is actually a nicer version than I often get. Frequently I don't see the trees either.

This happens when I just load the Avalon files into my CAW, then save and export without doing anything. Heck, I even used the S3PE trick to pull the source files back out of the Sims3Pack, which works fine if I install it without touching it, and the same thing still happens. I've messed around with DOD Transition Distance and dug through all the CAW forums I can find to no avail.

Is there something I'm not clicking here? Does someone with more knowledge of the tool have a fix to suggest?

Try refreshing the textures in the CAW world file, and then re-exporting it.

That would be the first thing I'd try!

This is something I haven't seen yet. Thanks Simsample. I'll try it out and post results here.

Sigh. It really seemed like this should have worked, but it looks like no dice.

Perhaps you could upload the files somewhere so that I can take a look at them? Also, what are your system specifications?

Do you want the compiled Sims3Pack world or my edited CAW files? I'll be happy to put them up for download on my server.

Either or both- whatever's easiest. I'll be able to see if I'm getting the same results as you!

OK, they should be available for download here: http://illation.net/Sims3/Uploads/AvalonReborn.zip

Thanks for taking a look! And if you *don't* have the same problem, I'd be awfully grateful if you let me download *your* CAW export so I can use it! Heh.

Okay, I got the same result with your files in my game, too! But I solved it- what I did was to refresh the textures in the CAW world file as you did before, but this time I also deleted the _KEY file:

Try that and see if it fixes things!

Ooh, another Rush fan! They are touring this year, do you have tickets?

Thanks for the head's up about the tour! I actually didn't know. We've been in the middle of a huge move to a different city, and I've been living with my head in a bucket for months. It looks like the relevant tour dates are in almost two months, so there's time to coordinate something with friends.

As for the subject at hand, hmmm. Either I'm doing the wrong thing, or it's not working for me.

(After backing up) I opened the .world file I'd been editing in CAW. I selected all of the rows marked IMG with a blank in the name column and chose "Deleted" (sic). Then I did the same for the one row marked _KEY.

This resulted in all of the named IMGs losing their name, i.e. now having a blank in the name column. So if I were to delete the _KEY first and THEN try to remove unnamed IMGs, it looks like I'd end up with no IMGs at all.

Then I saved the .world file, opened it in CAW, and saved immediately. For good measure, I also ran Edit in Game and saved as I exited THAT. In both cases, when I zoomed all the way out, the terrain went black. Just in case this didn't mean what I thought it meant, I exported the world anyway and installed it in my game. I'm still getting the same behavior.

Okay, try this one:

Try the username [email protected] and the password modthesims to access that. Maybe the files are getting corrupted as you save?

Well then. I downloaded these and exported them from CAW without even opening them, and the problem is magically fixed! ...which is delightful, but also bothersome. I'm going to try editing your files and see if the problem reappears. I'll be terribly grumpy if there's something wrong that produces a problem like this on future worlds I edit with CAW. I have no idea how I'd begin to troubleshoot it. I suppose now is a lousy time to reveal that I am on a Mac, running Windows 7 in a virtual machine using VMWare Fusion. That's enough possible failure points to make my eyes cross.

But for now, I can play in the world, and that's great!

Curious! Perhaps it is a save issue then, as sometimes CAW can do silly things like corrupting textures if it runs out of memory. I'm glad the save I did is working, let us know if you get any more problems!

I had a similar problem, except my terrain turned yellow instead of black... I have tried several different things, but nothing worked. I'm glad things seem to be working out for you though. As for Loverboy, I think I might maybe know whats wrong. If you have your cloud settings all the way up to four or five, then it appears super foggy. I think if you go into view>time of day, then you will see a drag bar thing that says 'clouds' or something like that. Drag it down to the first or second one, and that should fix your problem.

It seems someone else had the yellow thing happening too, but I can't remember the resolution. I'll try and dig around and see what I find.

For the fog issue, if crystal5213 suggestion doesn't work, there is a .package I made up in the resources section that should fix that.
