BEECH
Daytona Beech has worked untiringly for the development of Widespot. Will the stress of change make this family stronger, or tear it apart?
  • Daytona (Popularity, Aries, State Assemblywoman) is the big fish in this small pond. After finally bringing the highway and economic development to Widespot, should she push for higher office, or stop and smell the grandchildren?
  • Hamilton (Popularity, Gemini, Campaign Manager) always does the right thing. He knows it's the right thing, because Mama says so.
  • Sandy (Popularity, Scorpio) is tired of never getting her own way. Isn't it time she had a little adventure? Did something on her own?
  • Virginia (Popularity, Gemini, public school) understands the importance of social networking and getting everything done right, whether it's banners for the prom or solving world hunger. She just wishes she were better at it. And at everything!
  • Rocky, (Libra, public school) just wants everybody to get along.

Ugly is in the heart of the beholder.

BEECH RESIDENCE
70056 Highway 13.5. (3x3, $58,010) Daytona Beech built her family's new home (4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths) right on the new highway. Sandy hasn't had a chance to start landscaping yet, but outdoor amenities include front and back porches, rear balcony, barbeque, and swing. The open-plan ground floor is intended to provide hospitality for large parties. With a piano and wet bar in the foyer, lots of room to circulate in the living room, and a sizable kitchen/dining area, Daytona hopes to create a hospitable atmosphere. Sandy at least got to decorate the master bedroom, in the back.

HART
After the Hot Tub Dome Scandal and his wife's diagnosis with Rodney's Sudden Death Syndrome, international sports star Valentine Hart retired with his family to the quietest place he could find. Can he and his children recover from the trauma of Angel's untimely death here? Or will they just make everyone else as big a mess as they are?
  • Valentine (Romance, Sagittarius, retired Hall of Famer) loved his wife. But she's dead now, and he has needs. So shut up.
  • Angel (Romance, Libra, Professional Party Guest, deceased) was with Valentine through all their ups and downs. She didn't bail on him during the Hot Tub Dome Scandal, and he didn't bail on her when she got Rodney's Sudden Death Syndrome. She really thought she'd beat that disease; but she didn't.
  • Candy (Romance, Capricorn) is not going to rot in the country forever. And as for getting a job - ! There's easier ways to get control of money. Mama taught her that!
  • Rhett (Romance, Gemini) believes in male privilege so thoroughly, he doesn't know he believes in it.
  • Goldie (Popularity, Sagittarius, public school)- Why did they have to come live at the back end of nowhere? And why did Mama have to go and die? Goldie's life sucks!

HART RESIDENCE
1 Land Road (3x4, $104,951, 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths) is an opulent, asymmetrical new Spanish-style home decorated in slightly florid taste. Although plans for more extensive landscaping and party space are in abeyance while the family mourns, current outdoor amenities include a small enclosed front courtyard with benches and shrubs, large rear patio with hot tub and bar, and a balcony which could easily accommodate more social space.
Angel was a professional party guest, and the house reflects that, with its capacious kitchen and dining area giving onto the patio, recreation room, and living room divided into cozy conversation spaces. Upstairs, Valentine now sleeps alone, mostly, in the master suite. Teen Goldie's room still contains a few childish things. Candy and Rhett seem to be camping out in their father's house, with sparse furnishings and few personal items. Upkeep has been allowed to slide since Angel's death, and someone in the family has been drinking a lot, judging by the number of drinks sitting ready on the bar.

MANN

Rich Mann has it all. He came to Widespot to protect "it" from prying eyes, and retire in comfort.
  • Rich(Fortune, Gemini, Criminal Mastermind) clawed his way to the top of the "legitimate businessman" heap and now he's found himself a nice, remote spot to retire in. If he can bring himself to retire!
  • Lana (Fortune, Taurus) isn't sure what motivated the move to the country and resents having to learn to cook. But she adores Rich, and that makes up for everything. She has never asked where money comes from. It's just there when she needs it.
  • Junior (Fortune, Sagitarrius) has gone through life with very little to trouble or vex him. Which is fine, but maybe it's time he grew up and became his own man? Or maybe it's just time for another martini?

MANN RESIDENCE
2 Side Spur (3x5, $192,168, 5 bedrooms, 3.5 baths, 2 fireplaces, swimming pool) The most recent newcomers to Widespot have built their new retirement home to look like an established manor, with swimming pool, pond, verandah, a small stone-railed balcony, and mature trees replanted at great expense. Anxious to preserve their privacy, the Mann family surrounded their home with a stone fence; but invited guests can enter the swimming pool area through a wrought-iron gate.

The downstairs parlor extends across the front width of the house and provides direct access to the study and library. The formal dining room and sizeable kitchen are a bit underutilized, as no one in the family cooks well. Since the Mann family is settling in, the private space upstairs is still a little bare, with excess bedrooms currently utilized as a game room/home gym and additional studies. The master suite includes a walk-in closet storing mementos of Rich's business life: elixir, polygraph, cool shades, and a simvac.

LAND
Homer and Beulah came to Widespot to get away from parental disapproval. Now that the highway's finally here, their children are in public school, and with Mary home, Beulah was able to get a job. Their kids face lots of opportunities now - for good, and ill.
  • Beulah (Family, Gemini, Administrative Assistant) wanted Homer; she got him. She wanted a big family; she's got one. She wanted a job; she got that. What will Beulah want next?
  • Homer (Family, Pisces, desk sergeant) moved here with Beulah because his family didn't approve of his doing the right thing by her. He thinks they've made a pretty good thing of it, put it all together. He'll never get rich working for the county sheriff department, but he's rich in kids, and now the highway's here, they have all kinds of opportunities.
  • Is Mary (Family, Pisces) a saint, a martyr, a drudge, or an idiot to work so hard for her family? What about what she wants for herself? Will she ever learn to say no?
  • Dixie (Fortune, Libra, public school) admires her big sister Mary and doesn't want to be one bit like her.
  • Scot (Family, Pisces, public school) would like to fall in love and get his first kiss and go steady and live happily ever after as soon as possible, please.
  • River (Cancer, public school) wishes more kids lived around here.
  • Delta (Pisces, public school) would rather not be the youngest, but here she is.

LAND RESIDENCE
1 Valley Road (4x3, $31,400, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths) The Land house is an architectural mess, but has room for everyone and that's all they care about. Originally a one-room cabin on a post foundation, additional rooms and porches have been added willy-nilly as needed/affordable over the years, and even part of the attic finished for storage space. The lot has room for further expansion, a garden, or even maybe, someday, a garage.

The original cabin is now the kitchen/dining/living area, with a combination of worn wooden floors and red and white linoleum patched with other colors in high-traffic and disaster-prone areas. Bookcases and toys are scattered all over the house. The original bathroom off the kitchen is now theoretically a "master bath," while a second "kids' bathroom" links the front "girls' bedroom" to the rear "boys' bedroom." A large enclosed porch provides a common study area. A stereo sits on the back porch and a cheap barbeque in the yard. Two dormers in the nightmarishly complex, but weatherproof, roof provide storage for the family's old baby items.

WEISS

Skye Weiss came to Widespot, with his trust fund, to watch the stars. They watched back. Now the trust fund is gone, Penny's grown, Woody's growing, the highway's come through bringing new people with it - What's a hermit to do?
  • Skye (Knowledge, Virgo, High School Science Teacher) came to Widespot for the good viewing conditions. Something viewed him back. Twice. He's gotten used to it.
  • Penny (Leo, Knowledge) figures she must be here for a reason. Probably anthropological. So she strives to know as much as possible about her neighbors, so she'll have something useful to report.
  • Woody (Aquarius, Romance, public school) is ravaged by hormones and a fear that he's not ever going to be compatible with anybody.

WEISS RESIDENCE
15 Valley Road. (4x3, $35,913, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath) The Weiss observatory/cabin was built largely by Skye, without help from an architect, and it shows. The roofs are flat for ease of finding the best viewing positions for various celestial phenomena, and were later railed so his kids wouldn't fall off them while he was busy. Though most of the trees in the immediate vicinity have been cut back, either for use or to clear the sky view, Skye kept one small bay tree for shade. The bench is nice for drinking coffee on and reading.

The first floor consists of a stone-floored living/dining/kitchen area with a large space partitioned off into a bedroom and a small space partitioned off for a bathroom with mismatched fixtures and the original, wooden subfloor. Skye provides his children with everything he considers essential - books, desks, a computer, chess, easels, food, and caffeine. What he couldn't make or scrounge he mail-ordered. The floor above consists of a stair hall and a second bedroom, which also contains a crib, leftover from Penny and Woody's infancy, bookcase, desk, and the wardrobe. Though I can't make the door show up in the birdseye, the stair hall also permits access to the ground-floor roof, which was the original viewing platform. Stairs are fixed rather than modular, but seldom cause routing problems due to the small size of the family and the relative infrequency of use of the upper floors. The top floor consists entirely of a stair hall and a viewing platform, with both large and small telescopes. The stair hall is crammed with old baby stuff. Waste not, want not, and anyway, who knows when the aliens might come back?

COMMUNITY LOTS
Widespot contains only three small, minimally developed community lots. The Mann family could, under OFB, buy all of them, and the other existing families could acquire one with planning and forethought.
  • The General Store (3x2, $47,073)
Whether you're just passing through or live here year-round, the General Store is the only place to buy anything in all of Widespot.
  • The Swimming Hole (3x2, $36,186)
Fed by natural springs, the Swimming Hole is an updated version of the country classic. In other words, it has a restroom.
  • Makeout Spot (3x2, $7,182)
It's a bench shielded by bushes, very popular with local teens.
The General Store is one of those rural highway stops that gets half its business from locals and half from strangers passing through. It's a little Spartan because such places are, and so that players will be able to customize to their hearts' contents. Groceries, clothes, a changing booth, magazines, computer games, a restroom, piped-in music, and a small picnic area with a chess game under an obscuring tree are enough to keep the place busy. A cashier generated for this store, Sadie Wilkie, has relationships with several Widespot characters, but has no major role in existing storylines. The Swimming Hole, in addition to the restrooms, boasts a hot tub, picnic area, and lounge chairs. But Widespot is so dinky, even the Makeout Spot draws a crowd on Saturday night.

And that is absolutely everything in Widespot! Except the drama, of course. I can't take pictures of that.

Ugly is in the heart of the beholder.
