This user has the following games installed:

Sims 3
Re-installation problems: Error message (PLEASE HELP)
Hello everyone,

Please help with this problem:
I recently downloaded a lot of custom content from various sites (along with this one). I think that one of the files I added messed up my game. It would run fine until it came to the screen right after you pick which neighborhood to play, and it starts to load your saved game. During the loading process, the game would suddenly quit. It would just disappear and I'd be staring at my desktop. I believe that is called a..soft crash? Now, I am unsure whether this was caused by the Custom content or not. I had been playing the game with lots of added files for quite a while with no errors, so I though it must be the new content. I tried removing some of it, but the game still crashed.
But that isn't my problem.
This is:
I removed all of the custom content (copied it to another folder), and decided to re-install my entire game.
The game apparently uninstalled successfully.
Now I keep trying to install it. The install wizard works fine until I get to where it actually starts to install the files. The files are installing, and everything is working until this message appears:

"File: d:\thumbnails\CasThumbnails.package
Error: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)"

Along with the option to "retry" or "cancel"

When I click retry, the installation process seems to continue, but then it shows the same message, and never is able to finish the installation.

I posted this on the official Sims 3 site, and I was told to run the disk defragmenter on my PC. I did so, and the error is still occurring.

If anyone could please help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,
Midnight

I can't tell if this is a problem with my computer, the game itself, or a combination of both. I am not even sure that custom content caused the problem in the first place. I hope I am posting this in the correct forum, and if I am not, I apologize.

*Copying* a file does not remove it from the original location. Moving does. So you might have been OK if you had actually removed your CC … I know this doesn't help with your current problem, I'm just telling you in case you run into a similar issue in the future.

Cyclic redundancy check sounds like a problem with your disc (or with reading the disc). Please do this FAQ:

http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php...me_Help:Install

– it has tips on how to clean the disc, and also on how to do a local install in case it won't work with the disc in the drive.

Stuff for TS2 · TS3 · TS4 | Please do not PM me with technical questions – we have Create forums for that.

Hello! Thanks for the quick reply!

I didn't mention this, but after I copied the files, I then deleted the ones that were in the game.

I will try everything you recommended! Thank you for your help!

Thanks,
Midnight

Edit: It worked!
I took my disk out, and realized that there was a huge smudge. I wiped it off, and it was able to install! Heh, I feel pretty silly now. I never even though about the disk!

Edit, er, again: It installed successfully!
I'm very nervous about installing the custom content again. Does it sound like it was the CC that messed up my game? I didn't download anything big, like Mods, just new hairs, clothes, ect... I installed both files from this site, and TSR (I just found out that it can have bad content). Should I add it back to my game? How do I find the file that has the problem?

In order to better solve your problem, please go through the following as listed below:
  • General - Problem Custom Content
Your issue is related to conflicting, outdated, or badly made custom content. Please follow the Finding Problem Custom Content FAQ.
This is the FAQ you would use if you'd run into issues with custom content. A "shortcut" you can try (not sure if/where that's in the FAQ too) is to sort your CC by date, then take out the most recent stuff first – if it worked before, chances are the problem file is one of the new ones.

It's always *possible* that CC causes problems – hard to tell, I can't see what you've got installed there.

Make sure your CC is compatible with your game. Remember to patch after reinstalling (or don't, but then don't be surprised when mods stop working – some need a particular game version).

On occasion you might be asked to do a long FAQ - please make sure you do all the steps and don't just skip over them. You'll often find that these long FAQs have all the details you need. If nothing in the above FAQs fixes your problem you may post again detailing exactly which you have done and which steps failed.

I'm locking this since your installation issue is solved. If you run into CC issues, do that FAQ and if it doesn't help, post a new thread. =)
